Project Sky Lance

OOC-I don't know if this has already been done in NS or not, but since I haven't seen any threads about it then I'm going to go ahead with it.
The Armed Republic of Unum Veritas has just begun a R&D project known as Project Sky Lance. The goal of this endeavour is to field a reliable way of defending against ICBM's, through the use of lasers and mirrors. This venture into SDI will be highly expensive, and so the Veritasean government is seeking out partners to help in any way they can (either through manpower, monetary, or facility donations). We are in need of highly skilled scientists whose expertise lies in the field of high-energy lasers, mirror optics, or physics in general. As of now we do have facilities to test the systems, but as the project grows, there will be a need for larger areas. The current thesis is to fire several different lasers at angled mirrors until they form one major beam. That beam would then be aimed by satellites and ground-based computers at incoming targets. If this can be achieved then the lasers could be manipulated for several other tasks, such as destroying enemy spy satellites or perhaps disrupting communications. Any country that donates in a substantial way (and remains active on this thread) will of course receive all information developed by this project and will have the ability to construct their own facilities. Thank-you.

I guess no one is interested in protecting their nation from enemy missiles......well I'll just keep plodding along by myself then.

We wish to donate the services of the 250 scientists that worked on our missle defense lasers, and when the time comes to start launching mirrors, transport via our space capable dropships.
At the moment, we use submarine based lasers to attack them while in their early launch stage, leaving us vulnerable against a first-strike. As such we are interested in this technology......

Sileetris, your interest is fully appreciated. We eagerly await the arrival of your scientists. They will be met at the airport and taken to our facilities in southern Unum Veritas. The site is known as Area Bright Light, and is completely self-sufficient. Your scientists will be provided with their own lodgings and forms of communication to keep in contact with your government. Once a few more countries have joined in, the real research will begin.

The Armed republic of telcordia' has been doing its own parallel R&D on a similar project however we have had not had much sucess purhaps combineing our scientific resources and funding would prove more fruitful?
We wish to send the 3rd Research and Development Scientific Division (about 300 scientists in various fields; as well as engineers, artists, fabricators, and manufacturing experts) in order to assist you. As well as a funding supplimrent of 30 Billion dollars... defense against Ballistic missiles is currently our Number one priority

Your help would be greatly appreciated. We shall send a VIP jet transport to pick up your scientists from any airfield you choose. They will then be flown to Area Bright Light's private airfield which was just completed. Thank you very much for your help, and be sure to stay active on this thread (that way I can get other people's ideas too).

we will donate 20 nuclear ICBM's for testing purposes
we will also donate 300 of our finest scientists to this project.
(we are a june nation and can afford this. population of 677 million.)

Alright Arribastan, your support is also appreciated. Another transport will leave within the hour for your land, to pick up your scientists and bring them to Area Bright Lights. We can send a transport ship (under heavy escort, of course) for the ICBM's, or if you have a better/safer way of transporting them, you are welcome to use it. Thank you again for your donation.

La Famiglia, we currently have Veritasean Marines protecting the site, as well as an aircraft carrier stationed just off the coast of that area providing aerial support. As of now we could use funding or any hardware you might have that is relevant to the project. Thank-you.

Okay, we've begun constructing a phased-array laser. The several different lasers (currently 6) will all be targeted on specially coated mirrors. The mirrors are experiencing difficulties (they have a tendency to break when a laser is aimed at them), but we're working to correct it. The lasers also have thermal blooming problems (meaning they lose power as their heat dissapates in the atmosphere), but we're working to correct this problem as well. If we can find a way to increase the power to the lasers then we should be well on our way.

reinforce the mirrors w/reflective titanium and set the lasers to just below that breaking point. the missles won't use titanium and the 6 mirrors will.
we should add more so it can shoot down something like 20-30 nukes.

Yes, we are only working on developing the technology for a single facility, once we have that then you can construct as many facilities as you'd like.
Your suggestions have been passed on to the scientists and they will be running a test on that soon. The mirror coating, etc, will take a little while, and we have to repair one of the lasers from the last test (the heat cracked part of it), but once that is all done we will begin testing again. It has also been suggested that we use diamond mirrors, which will be tried if this doesn't work.

don't forget, you've got 20 ICBM test missles, courtesey of Arribastan

Yes, once we can get the initial tech problems out of the way, we'll begin firing at actual missiles. Where are the missiles? We'll need some sort of firing platform for the test....we could use one of my boomers (Ohio class missile sub) or something else...

they are en route by C-5 galaxy.
we currently have in our possession a higly advanced targeting systemthat we modified for our ARROW 2 Theatre High Altitude Defense Missile Platform called the Lachesis 2 which has proven its Extreme accuracy in plong distance shots over and over again perhaps it can asisst with positioning the satelites and co-ordianting phased array fireing... we will give you the plans for free obviously.

Alright, if you have any engineers who are familiar with this system we will utilize them them to help our lasers. We've constructed titanium and diamond mirrors: both will be tried. The laser has been repaired and we've added a new measure to combat the thermal blooming (we increased the size of the laser cavity which will in turn allow for greater laser power). That test will commence soon and I'll post the results here.
There is an airfield on the Isle of Bartoule (an uninhabited island part of Veritasean territory) that the C-5 Galaxy has been cleared to land at. The ICBM's will be staged from that airfield for the laser testing (when it gets to that stage).
As you might be aware, Gurian has a laser satellite defense system. However the system has its flaws. In order to maintain enough power to damage a Nuclear ICBM, the beam must be extremely narrow. However there is so much power that the Nuclear ICBM's engines fail to function after a few seconds of firing. After half a minute of firing after that, the Nuclear ICBM will explode.
This system is slow and very 'brute force' oriented. But it would help quite a bit. I am willing to give you the plans.

I read your thread and it appeared that your system was satellite based. We are attempting to get a ground based system (in RL it is theoretically possible) that won't be quite as "brute force". The ground based systems would have the ability to fire several times per second and the software would make corrections for any targetting problems. If you managed to make any breakthroughs in laser power etc, we would be happy to see them. Thank you for your help.

The ICBM's are set up on the Isle of Bartoule, ready to fire whenever the research reaches that phase.
I'd like permission to send the research team that worked on Gurian's Missile Defense System to help out. In exchange, I would like this technology when research is complete.

Gurian, alright, it isn't too late to join in. We await the arrival of your team at Area Bright Lights. Currently we are just tweaking the laser and mirrors. Both of those seem to be almost perfect. Once that is done, we will have some live-fire tests to validate and correct any errors in the targetting software. Once this is all done, we'll be ready to begin building these stations throughout participant countries.
