A question about reality

There has been an issue that has occured that I need some answers to.

In World War Two, the United States of America, had 128 million people during that war. The US had 17 million troops. Russia, had 150,000,000 people and almost 30 million troops. Yet, I have huge nations telling me that these figures do not work in Nation States and also That I cannot have 1 million troops, infact I can't even have 750,000 troops. I don't understand this.

Thank you for your assistance.

in WW2 soldiers cost a lot less to equip train and support, same with aircraft, it was much cheaer to buy and run a P-51 than it would be to buy a Mig-29 even accoutnting for inflation etc.

Also you should look at the huge debt incured by nations involved (particularly the UK).

Mobilzing a significant part (ie greater than say 1-2%) of your population in to the military has ahuge impact on your economy. A WW1/2 style mobilization is very ver costly and while perfectly understandable for a vital war is completely unworkable for a standing force.

Also general upkeep and traning costs huge amounts of money, after all you have to train your personell with some "real" weapons now and then.

Thank you for all your comments. I like Land of Ages option #2 to have 500,000 troops and lots of tanks.

Thanks again And please continue to respond to this topic.
