ESAMOPIAN POLITURBO MEETING
JANUARY 1, 2004

[Note: I do not know how to underline, italicize, nor bold words on this forum... It would probably create a better effect and be clearer for whoever is reading, but unfortunately I cannot, just wanted to let you know!]

The Esamopian Politburo building was very simple. Originally the Esamopian Royal family, back when a monarchy existed, had set-up plans to build a new summer palace, when the revolution occured. The main palace was bombed severly and despite many repairs is no longer structurally sound. The summer palace, however, was still under construction but served as the Communist HQ until the war ended, and eventually was fully built.

ANYWAY! The Politurbo had decided on a meeting to decide the future of the Esamopian people as well as the nation, and we bring you live into the discussions:

"... and I will never submit to cowardly bourgeoisie democarcy! It is an insult to the strong willed workers of Esamopia, and I would rather die than see my country turned into a pusillanimous whimp!" Vassily's (Agricultural Minister) large frame made an imposing, almost intimidating stance, as he furiously banged on his podium and his passionate face turned red, sweating.
"Perhaps I can grant you your wish, Vassily!" Nomarikov (Major General, Southern District of Esamopia,) charged towards Vassily, but was quickly stopped when junior ministers as well as other Politurbo members created a wall between them.
"ORDER! Sit down you fools! What we are doing here is not a game, our actions will decide the future direction of this great nation, and I will not have rumors of the immaturity of my government's officials spreading across Esamopia." The Premier's authoritative voice, and the subtle yet perceptible presence of Secret Police dressed in black, standing at attention around corners of the Politurbo chamber, was more than enough to bring order back to the meeting. The Premier then continued:
"We are gathered here today not to deliver foolish rhetoric or get into fist fights! We have serious problems, pro-democracy protests are almost a daily occurence, with the slightest provocation we have had bloody riots, and now rumors abound with the disloyalty of the army and conspiracies for change! What path shall we choose?"

Significant discussion followed, although in a much more civil manner, and the debate over the future centered on three options for the political future of the Esamopian leadership:

1. Maintain the status-quo: This decision has the most support, although the pro-democracy demonstrations have been gaining more support, with several riots and rumors of a democratic plot to take over the government possibly including army officers! The situation seems untenable, yet with little taste for other alternatives, most Politburo members may end up supporting this.

2. Call a democracy referrendum and schedule elections: This would certainly satisfy pro-democracy demonstrators, but would alienate current supporters of the hard-line commie government. Furthermore, only a minority of Politburo members support this action and with so many in the government fearful of the future of their jobs (or worse,) a democracy move too quickly executed may cause more instability than it wishes to fix.

3. Although not officially something that was discussed, several top ministers, including the Ministers of Defense, Interior, State Policy, Industrial Affairs, and led by Vassily (Minster of Agriculture.) Although the Defense Minister is in on the possible plot, it is uncertain whether or not the rest of the army would join their "civilian" overseer and with too few top generals on board (mostly due to fear of being exposed), the conspirators may not have the support necessary to start a new dictatorship, one that would crush protests and dissident movements. The option probably has the least opportunity for success, although if army support is secured, then the rest of the government (fearful for their jobs... and lives) would likely fall in line.

4. Other: Basically some other realistic option. Only you can help determine the future of Esamopia!
