Dictator Anderson announced today that work was beginning on a Gurian Missile Defense System. "Every day," he said, "we are threatened by nuclear missiles and other weapons of mass destruction distributed through missiles. We can not let ourselves be at the mercy of these nations. We must protect ourselves! If we do not, there may not be a Gurian left to protect."

Currently no more information has been released. Stay turned to the Gurian News Network for more!

Dictator Anderson sat in his office. Finally Gurian would have a way to defend itself from such terrible weapons. He smiled, a great big grin. No one would threaten Gurian anymore. As long as the project succeeded.

But there was no way it couldn't. All research was being done in a secret high-security lab. Uniforms wouldn't matter...you'd need someone's full identity. Faking your way in...not a chance. The only people allowed to know of the location of this lab were HIGHLY trusted, and the people allowed in even more trustworthy.

Dictator Anderson watched as an ICBM armed with conventional explosives was fired from a far-away Gurian base toward an uninhabited island in the Island of Gorlon region. This was the 32nd test conducted. Dictator Anderson sighed, expecting failure.

The satellite above began to focus the sun's energy into a very, very, very thin laser beam. The laser beam was extremely thin, but also extremely powerful. It hit the missile. The missile's rockets shut off as it descended quickly. It hit the water as the laser still focused on it. After a few seconds there was an explosion and the camera feed cut out.

Dictator Anderson smiled. Finally the Gurian Missile Defense System was up and running. After years of testing and tinkering it was ready. A few more tests were conducted. Every time the Gurian Missile Defense System was able to shoot down the ICBM. The Gurian Missile Defense System was operational. Gurian was now safe from the peril of Nuclear ICBMs.

what about 20 at once?
Gurian

OOC: It couldn't defend against 20 at once. It might take out two, three, MAYBE four. But not 20.
13-10-2003, 20:44
do you own any nukes???
Gurian
13-10-2003, 20:45
OOC: Yes. I have thousands of different types of nuclear weaponry, ranging from massive warheads to small kiloton explosions.

You do realise that the key to a sucessful defense against ICBMs is to kill them in the boost phase, which is soemthing that orbital beam weapons are best at (one of Kim Stanley Robinson's orange county has a good bit on this).

This is General Kono Jack, Cheif of Blood Peak command.
We demand you stop all tests and decrease your military ten-fold if you do not comply you may be subject to national termination.
Your tests violate the sovereignty of all the nations in your continent and globally.

I, Dictator Anderson, refuse. You have no right to dictate how our military is constructed and so far have offered no valid reasons to decrease the size of our military. We have never used nuclear devices in real combat situations. We have never begun any wars, the closest to a war was the Gurian-Scythirus conflict which eventually winded down and resulted in a peace treaty. There is absolutely no past history of violence or misuse by Gurian.

These tests do not violate the sovereignty of nations in our region, the Island of Gorlon. They have all agreed to this system designed to DEFEND us from Nuclear ICBMs. The laser-beam is incredibly thin, unable to truly attack. It could only be used for defense.

Furthermore, should you attempt to "terminate" me, I will fight back very fiercely. Being among a string of islands, especially a very strategically defensible string of islands, I will hold the tactical edge. Utilizing weapons of mass destruction will only result in our mutual annihilation. In a conventional face-off, Gurian and her allies in the Island of Gorlon region would very likely be able to repel your attack as we would outnumber you and hold the defensive edge.

If you choose to attack, that is your choice. But realize you are attacking a country for simply failing to comply with your wishes about reducing military size. People won't be very sympathetic toward you, will they? I have a feeling you wouldn't have as much support if you initiated an attack.

In conclusion, feel free to attack if you wish to lose or be completely annihilated. I do not take well to threats.

To Gurian

We understand why such a system has been developed but we dont feel that you have thought about the consequences fully.
If nations with dire intent get wind of such a system near your sector, then they may strike not just at you but at other nations as well.
I believe that the system must be dismantled, a system requireing the use of Patriot Missiles would be ultimately less effective but also less evasive towards other nations sovereigntry. You do not have the right to build satellites capable of such mayhem in space, space which is shared by us all.

The use of force may still apply if you do not meet these dmands in some shape or form. The Democratic Federation, which i am the Millitary Chief in Command, is right behind me.

Yours Faithfully

You have absolutely no right to tell Gurian what he should do. He is developing a perfectly safe defense system and you need to stay out of it. If force is used against him, I will send aid to Gurian to defend his plans.

I fully support Gurians research and development for a missile defense system. Every nation has the right to defend itself against any threat.

This is a violation of space protocal, you must remove the missile system or face termination.
You have a choice.

You have no right to tell his nation what to do... there are hundreds-maybe thousands- of countries that have developed a even more efficient laser inteceptor and I dont see anybody threatning them... WE have our own missile defense system. It utilizes both space and land based lasers and GALOSH ABMs.

To Blood Peak,
You have no idea the consequences of war do you? It means losing people, and for you I guess. Money. "Terminating" Gurian would be a dire mistake, he's not going to cut up the world with this laser, and if anyone decides to blow up the beam, that's his problom, not yours. Yes we share space, of course, but that means you are going to have to live with what is up there. Why are you warning this nation for a laser when there are tons of nations with sattelites that have nuclear missiles in them? Not to mention that this laser is supposed to be againts those missiles.

(OOC: A question I have is, is this laser possible in the modern day to build?)
