Attempt at a Newbie Guide FAQ

TROUSRS

I have read mulitple 'n00bie' or 'n00b' guides that, honestly
wouldn't be worth a damn to new players. I mean dont get me wrong, its
great for us older players to compliment on, but it doesn't really do
its job of trying to teach the new players. I'm going to start off with
a little bit about role playing because that ties into everything else
that will be covered.

Index:
I-Role Play
II-FAQs
III-Helpful links

I-Role Play

Role Playing is how [virtually] everything is done on NationStates. From
money, to wars, to hey, DIPLOMACY!, role playing affects you everywhere
you go, everything you do.

Well what is it?

Role Play is, in short, creative writing. If you don't like to write,
Role Play is not for you. You basically start a story (Be it a war, trade,
space exploration, son needs a wife, high school etc) just be creative
with it, thats what makes it fun.

Hey this sounds neat! So I just say what my people are doing in a
creative way?

Yup, right on the nail.

II-Now onto the FAQs:

How do I declare war?

This is one of the most commonly asked questions for nationstates new
breed, and thats alright. For most new players, this is their first RPG
and they think that war is all there is to offer. If you want to have a
war, use your Role Playing Skills. If you do good, people will begin to
accept you. If you just say "I delair war on [nation]" and act like a
doofus, you wont get any respect. Remember, role play it out.

Ok, how much money do I have?

Again, Role Playing ties into it. You have basically no limit. As long
as you don't go crazy with buying exessive amounts of things, and spending
trillions and trillions a day, you will be fine. Though if you have a Frightening Economy, you obviously have more to spend than someone with an imploded economy. Some peopel use GDP calulators I don't think anyone
but me tallies up storefront totals..

I want to open a shop

Alright. I would wait until you have around 10million population, then
start producing* small arms (assult rifles, machine guns, pistols), later
you can get into naval, ground, and air.

*Huh, the issues didn't say I can produce Tanks?!

Thats the first thing I said when a friend told me I could make some guns.
Yet, your nation spotlight and the Role Play forums really have next to
nothing to do with eachother. You decided when you think your nation is
ready to produce weaponry and other products. Remember, ROLE PLAY! Woot!

Ok, I have my shop open, I got a good army, been in a few wars. Now
what?

Well now try some different RPs. Look for Foriegn relations threads, do
some exploring, host a party, have an election. The possiblities are
endless.

I know nothing about military!

Wow, neither do I. Thats ok, scroll down into my helpful links section
and click on a link (army navy airforce) and it will bring you to a
grand site with pictures and specifications for tanks, ships, and planes.
Then you can read the specifications whenever you need to. Its great!

Wait! I still have some more questions!

Feel free to ask me. You can post it here or Telegram me. If I can't
answer it myself, I will get it answered for you. Just ask around and
you'll be fine kid.

I disagree. You have much more money with a Frightning economy than with an Imploded economy IMHO.

This has been an OOC post.

I tried a war with Terepa, but it died (I take it as a victory OOC, but not IC of course).

And I have got a......erm..........cosy naval storefront.

*cough* lima beens *cough*Listend, I'm tired of everyone and their JONOLAND=LIMABEANS!!!!!! crap. Read my Current sticky on role play and ignore. NOW. Besides, the NS world is much different than the real obviously. No more posting your jonoland crap in my thread, it wont make you cool, trust me.

Perhaps a link to the "New to NationStates? View these great threads!" sticky in the NS forum. That one goes more in-depth about money, warfare, etc.

:) I appreciate the mention.

Roleplaying is all about storytelling. To write a interest grabbing, and keeping story you need characters and scenes that evolve and change. The same old GOODvsBAD is stale and tired, but that is all alot of people can think to Roleplay.

I've talked to a few people who have trouble developing believeable characters and scenarios. Alot of them simply can't imagine losing, so they try to make the 'ultimate' nation. While it would be fun, it's not going to happen, and you'll have a much easier, and more interesting Roleplaying experience if you make your scenes believeable.

Defeats can be some of the most fascinating, and can build your character so much. If anyone remembers the glorious landing of my Reavers during the initial attacks on Melkor, this is one of those times. Though I was decimated by my enemies, I had a great time writing it, and after it was done my nation had improved so much more.

Something my characters always have are glaring FLAWS. Besides making your character more believeable, thier flaws can open up entire avenues of roleplaying oppurtunities. Develop a personality, and stick with it. If they're abrasive, all the better. Don't be afraid to piss someone off just because they're bigger than you. Some of my most enjoyable RP experiences have come because my characters are uncouth, asshole Vikings, who don't give a shit what anyone says.

If it's InCharacter for you to enslave races and sell heroin to children, DO IT. Don't let anyone else tell you no. They may try to IC force you to their wishes, but again this only adds more to the NS world. Instead of surrendering, pretend to consent to thier wishes and go 'underground'. Smuggle and steal and connive your way to the top.

Characters like this add alot more depth and flavor to the world we're trying to create here. I don't like characters that are 'good' or 'bad'. That's cheesy, and we've all seen it before. Try somethign new and different.

Just something to think about.

((Sorry for the spelling mistakes. I was going to spell-check but I decided I didn't even care.))

Just wandering, what is one Real Life (RL) day equal to in relation to NationStates? If my airplanes will arrive in one RL day, when can I bring them into my roleplay?

Also, how much of a millitary can I expect to have on my own? Do I have to buy every gun, pack of ammo, tank, airplane, green alien hitman, etc. that I use in a roleplay?

When you make a post, in the bottom left corner under the smilies is the word Options, underneath it is a link to BBCode. Click on said link and browse through it, it'll tell you all sorts of stuff you need to know for italics, bolding, underlining, linking, and posting pictures in posts

The generally accepted idea is that 1 RL day = 1 NS year. You don't have to use that, and you can change it depending on what's happening, but that's the general thing.
