The ELS-400 is The Elias Army's new Multiple Launch rocket system. Although it can acrry less missiles than current models, irt offers much greater flexibility and mobility due to its lighter vehicle mounting and smaller size.
Mission profile
The ELS-400 provides the commanders an operational fire capability for precision engagement of the enemy throughout the depth of the battlefield beyond the range of currently fielded cannons and rockets. It delays disrupts, neutralizes or destroys high payoff targets such as combat maneuver units, surface to surface missile units, air defense units, command/control/ communications sites and helicopter forward area rearming/refueling points.
Fire Control
ELS-400 is operated by a crew of three - driver, gunner and section chief - but the computer-based fire control system enables a crew of two or even a single soldier to load and unload the system. The fire control system includes video, keyboard control, a vast amount of programme storage and global positioning system. The fire control computer allows firing missions to be carried out in automatic or manual mode.
In a typical mission, a command and control post would transmit the selected target data via a secure data link to the on-board launch computer. The computer then aims the launcher and provides prompt signals to the crew to arm and fire a pre-selected number of rounds. The launcher can aim at a target in just 16 seconds. It is possible for the crew to select preprogrammed multiple mission sequences which have been stored in the computer
Launcher
The ELS-400 has exactly half the weapons carriage of the M270 laucnher, being able to carry a single sixpack launcher for all current 227mm MLRS rounds or one EAW-16 Tactcal Surface to Surface Missile (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=76211)
The system is mounted on a 6x6 all-wheel drive 5t truck which weighs approximately 23,000lb compared to more than 44,000lb for the MLRS M270 launcher.
The entire system is air transportable on C-130/An-12/EA-80 (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=38933)Tactical Transport Planes or as an underlsung load from Ch-53/Mi-26 type heavylift helicopters. This is unique for an MLRS system making the ELS-400 the ideal tyoe for rapid response trrops, parachute units and light infantry.
