Aerial Carrier design leaks to Allies.

28-09-2003, 04:38
Engineers at Focke-Wulf and Junkers produced designs for a zeppelin-pattern aircraft carrier for the Luftwaffe and OKW. The design accomodates 30 Bf-109T fighters (or 24 Me-110 night fighters), and 12 Ju-87 dive bombers. The craft also carries fuel and munitions to support its aircraft for extended operations. The design has yet to meet with any official response from the War Ministry.

This carrier is bigger than a comparably equipped WWII aircraft carrier. Besides, this is a preliminary design; there won't even be a prototype for at least another year. I'm sure that will come with all the usual changes and refinements that prototypes bring.

Air Marshal William Pertwee and First Minister For Defence General Sir Jack Jones looked from the report to each other's faces, each as much a picture as the other. Presently both gazes were turned towards Special Operations Wing Commandant Clive Dunn, from who's department the data had come.

"Are you mad?" Inquired the Defence Minister

"I assure you I am not! This intelligence is quite sound! This project is in the works of the Nazi machine as we speak!"

"What absolute twaddle..." "..The could hit Bombay and get home again without stopping!" Objected Pertwee, interrupting the Defence Minister's slight.

"Don't Panic.." Continued Sir Jack, in a panic. "Now..now..don't panic, please, gentlemen.."

"If they hit somewhere we know they otherwise couldn't, this devil would have to be behind it.. then we could get it. It couldn't possibly run without abandoning its airwing. We could get it. It would be a bigger loss to them than the attack would be for us, I'm sure."

"But the fact of surprise attacks almost anywhere in the world remains."

"How much damage can one airwing like that do before the loss of the carrier calls the whole silly affair to a close?"

At this point the SOW director butted in- "Excuse me, sir, who says there'll only be one of them?"

More turning of eyes from faces to papers and papers to faces.

More recent intelligence from British SOE operatives in Berlin indicate that the project, codenamed Juggernaut, is tied up with both the War Ministry and the Luftwaffe, who are unconvinced of the usefullness of such a craft (much like strategic bombers were in RL). The project has also taken a large step up in size; new design drawings are for a 380x90 meter zeppelin, carrying 85 aircraft and mounting 24 weapons stations. The new design would have a somewhat lessened endurance and speed, but much greater striking power. The mission of the Juggernaut has also been more clearly defined; the carrier is intended to provide close air support for fast moving ground forces, and to strike distant and difficult to reach targets independantly of any other force. Such a design indicates a plan to mount a significant offensive against someone besides Britain or WoS, since aircraft from France or one of the Kriegsmarine's aircraft carriers can strike them already. Exactly who this target is now becomes the matter of heated debate amongst the Allies.

OOC:
I rip off the Hitchhikers guide tot he universe books/movie and use an Improbability Ignority bomb. all those N00bie nukes turn into whales and petunias in flight... lol. I'm not sure what is does to the posters? probably whatever they turn into has a few extra brain cells, even if it's only a dead snail...

Calarcian Military Headquarters.
"Hmm... to damage that thing will need blowing large holes int he gasbags, have the tech boffins investigate phosphorous bombs, one of those spraying cinders all over that thing will make holes, if it doesn't just burn up in the first place... what a pity they're not using Hydrogen like the old Hindenburg, now that would have simpl;ified things."

[ooc:sorry, no time for long post]
This new weapon of Germany's has got the Imperial Military Council in a very good mood. The opinions are divided between those who hope it'll be used to strike Calarca and those who hope it will hit Iansisle.

SOE agents have obtained and provided additional information about the Juggernaut.
1) The carrier, at this point in its design, MUST be traveling at least 70 mph to retrieve its aircraft.
2) Estimates are that it takes 10 minutes from the time of launch to ready another aircraft. Conversely, it is believed to take 30 minutes to retrieve an aircraft.
3) The gas bags are intended to be made from a new puncture and flame resistant material, which is still under development.

The newest word from the SOE is that the Air Marshall Goering has decided to personally champion the Juggernaut project; being the Deputy Minister under the Four Year Plan, his personal influence is expected to produce a functional prototype within a year. Many in the Air Ministry see the project as being the answer to many nagging problems with providing a fast-moving mechanized army with close air support.
