GCU Finally Complete
Altaran's very first deep-space vessel is finally completed. The 'Mind' of the ship was installed earlier today, and reports no problems found whatsoever. The ship will be undergoing stringent tests to insure integrity - both of the vessel itself, and the AI.
Since the AI of these ships is actually the ship, ships are named by the AIs themselves.
The GCU (General Contact Unit) Semi-Colons are Forever will be launched later today. Weapons systems are classified at this point (OOC: No gridfire ;)), although the testing crew complement will be around 2,000 personnel (battle-ready ship will number around 1,250 crew), and the ship is exactly 987metres long.
The first mission of the ship (once full testing is complete) will be to travel to the outer reaches of the solar system and perform research experiments. It will also aid in the construction of new shipyards somewhere in the Sol system. Should the ship's course interfere with any other nation's shipping/trading routes, we will be happy to divert.

You will find that if you go above 30 mph that you many not exceed 50 mph unless you wish several large bombs to explode in your main propulsion drive. Have a good day... Esamopian Terror Council

(OOC: No gridfire ;)),
Gridfire Impellers have not been seen operating on anything smaller than an Ocean Class GSV (Although the GCU grey area had a models aboard.)
What about CAM, effectors, displacers etc?
Unless it only shares the name, it's a planet killer bub.

I would really like to equip them with the weapons from the books; but it is incredibly likely that some person would scream 'GODMOD!!!1!1!112@one' everytime I used the damn thing.
(Plus, I haven't been able to find an exact description on what these weapons actually DO/are - do you know :?)

Sorry, kids, on principle I have to I.G.N.O.R.E. Cannon anyone claiming to have access to Culture kit or tech of any kind. Have yourself a nice day.

Rightfully so. The logical alternative would be to simply not build it, and develop your own stuff instead.

People can have Star Wars, but I can't have toned down stuff from some books?

Ok. Basic Culture weaponary.
Engines. By decellerating really hard they can actually induce low level energy grid effects, and blast planets to bits.
EM Effectors. Manipulate electromagnetics (Computers, Brains, ets) and take control of them Have ranges of thousands of light years.
CAM. Compressed Anti Matter. You know what anti matter does? Compress it to the point where planets die if you set it off.
Displaced munitions. Other assorted weapons (CAM is displaced as well) that are launched through wormholes.
Add to that the fact that an ROU can make an attack run in 11 microseconds while not even being in real space.
I don't think you understand the power we're talking about here. A damaged culture drone would be more than a mach for most people's fleets.

A GCU would be easily able to destroy the entire Imperial Fleet in a stand up fight in about two seconds, and they wouldn't even detect it.
Yeh, thought so. Oh well, I'll either tone it down considerably (to the point of just having the same name) or use more conventional kit like railguns and the like.
bump
(for the record, this is not a godmod. its just got the same names)

OOC: Jesus H. Christ, what would drive people to develop weapons like that (I thought Dr. Device was bad)? I mean, that makes nukes look tame as a kitten by comparison. Who's the author of the books? I've got to read this stuff.
Iain M. Banks. I read Consider Phlebas first (which I thought was damn good). I'm now going through Excession. You can get them from Amazon if you can't find them anywhere else (which is highly unlikely).

OOC: Jesus H. Christ, what would drive people to develop weapons like that The culture are pacifists. When the Idiran war was over they refitted most of their offensive units into exploration ships. They only use those weapons when they absoloutely have to. Which is once every few centuries. Under most circumstances, threats can simply be effectorised into being nice, productive members of society (It may be an invasion of free will, but it's better than numerous deaths.) Even so, a GCU carries significant armament anyway.
Did I mention that one of his short stories has a handgun that puts out multi kiloton plasma bolts?
Just for reference, the Excession can play with them like toys.
