Communist revolution in Dunyabi!

16-09-2003, 17:33
Dunyabi, a small island nation in the Arabian sea rich in oil and other natural resources, has been gripped by revolutionary violence. The ultra-conservative Sunni muslim government, known for imposing draconic penalties for minor offenses such as amputation for theft and stoning for adultery, has been driven from the capital of Sumnis, a port city of 160,000 on the west coast, by an armed group calling themselves the Patriotic Socialist Front, or PSF. Mullah Hosni Abdul Mohammed and troops loyal to the previous government have retreated and taken to the hills as PSF guerillas stormed Sumnis in the early hours of the morning.

The PSF has been fighting a continuous insurgency since 1968, whn the current line of Mullahs was installed with foreign backing to increase stability in the oil-rich nation, where many foreign companies have hav drilling stations and platforms within its territorial waters. This move is especially worrying to corporations and businesses, as the PSF have promised to nationalize all Dunyabi industries and place them under democratic control by their workers.

PSF troops are lightly armed, wielding mostly antique AK-47s, SKS rifles, RPGs and mortars. The Mullah's troops are equipped with body armor, APCs and tanks, making their loss rather surprising. However, while the PSF enjoys widespread popular support, the Mullah is generally feared and reviled. This is in part due to the country's desperate state of poverty despite its oil wealth and what ordinary citizens see as foreign exploitation of their resources. Many see the Mullah as little more than a foreign puppet. Also explaining the PSF's popularity is the fact that the population at large is not nearly as conservative as the previous government, oweing in large part to frequent Western influence as a colonial state as well as isolation from extremist regimes such as Saudi Arabia.

The PSF preaches a form of Islamic Socialism, arguing that Marxist iedology is not contrary to the Koran or religion in general and encouraging religious belief among their followers. The PSF promises to allow religious freedom for all groups within Dunyabi, including the minority Shiites and the tiny Jewish and Christian communities which have been forced to go underground.

(OOC: If anyone wants to RP as the countries with oil investments there, or the country that installed the Mullah 30 some odd years ago, be my guest. That is, so long as you're not a ridiculously huge space nation that's gonna Ortillery-ify the entire country from orbit.)

We welcome this new Islamic Socialist nation to the world and offer thusly a deal to you so called 'Muslims'. The Dark Lord of the Undead, King Agardeloth offers alliance with you nation. It is hoped that such an alliance would create trade and cooperation and eventually when the Dark Lord is ready, he would be willing to convert your nation into Undead and your Islamic Socialism would last unto the ending and the breaking of this Earth. You would be as eternal in your worship of Allah and your promotion of Socialist principles.
Consider our generous offer for it is a rare one.

We would like to declare our support for the PSF, and a shipment of aid to their troops and the people of the country will be dispatched once their assured victory is secured.

This wasn't the first time in his 19 years of life that private Hakim Guljabar was confused as hell, but it was probably the most confusion hitting him all at once. He read the message, then read it again, then a third time for clarity. Finally, he simply shook his head and passed it to the captain of his small company, currently using an abandoned office building as its headquarters.

The captain put down his assault rifle and scanned over the notice briefly. "The Corpselands.. I've heard of them, but I didn't have any idea they'd get involved in this. I suppose we ought to make a reply. Get Commander Rashid on the phone and tell him what we're dealing with. I'm sure you can handle that on your own.. in the meantime I'll have to see to digging trenches and fortifying some streets and buildings in the shipping district. You can find me there when you're finished."

The private nodded briefly and scampered off, sandals clapping against the dirt of the unpaved road, till he arrived at the Supreme Islamic Council's main government building, which had yet to be renamed after their recent victory and was undergoing repairs due to a tank shell striking the roof. Luckily for him, Commander Rashid was standing right outside the front steps, personally overseeing the repair operations and the sandbagging of nearby structures for defensive purposes. "Commander! I have an important message from the, uh, Corpselands.."

The commander silently raised an eyebrow at the young soldier. "Concerning what, exactly?"

"Err.. trade agreements and 'undeath', whatever that is exactly. Read it for yourself."

This the commander did, taking the message and heading to his office to type out a response.

'Your Majesty King Agardeloth, Lord of the Undead:

It has come to our attention that you propose a trade agreement with our newly liberated country, and we thank you for your generosity. At the moment a large amount of our infrastructure had undergone heavy damage, and power in the major cities is intermitant at best. We are willing to trade oil , silks, spices, copper, and our other resources for the necessary parts to rebuild what has been destroyed as well as food relief for the areas currently in the grips of shortages. We are also in need of military vehicles, replacement parts and ammunition. Your offer of conversion to undeath, however, concerns us slightly more. We ask you to clarify. What is this undeath you speak of, and what does it entail? How can one promise us eternal life when Allah is the only one capable of doing so after we have passed from this earth?'

Several cargo ships carrying several hundred tonnes of food, water and medical supplies, along with a shipment of AK101 battle rifles (Approximately 35,000), have been dispatched to Dunyabi. Clearance for the ships to dock at a port and unload the supplies has been requested.
16-09-2003, 18:15
Clearance is granted immediatly. The ship is greeted by crowds of chearing civilians and soldiers, some of whom discharge rifles into the air. The AKs are quickly dispursed among the lesser armed ranks, with a surplus left over; the PSF soldiers only number about 24,000 in total, the the arms shipment is a significant upgrade to their fighting capabilities. As per PSF doctrine, food goes to civilians in need first and soldiers second, but this isn't as much of a burden as it might be. Merchants and small businessmen supportive of the revolutionaries often give out meals and rations for free or at discount prices, since the PSF has pomised to allow small businessmen to continue to operate independantly. Water, on the other hand, is precious for soldiers on the move and is distributed to troops in areas without running water first.

The Dark Lord of the Undead is not even sure as to his origins but he might have been created by some higher power like your Allah for example.
Undeath is not death in its entirity, the body dies of course but the spirit endures and is either bound to the body as a sentient zombie or as a wraith or ghost who wanders the world seeing creation in its entirity. Undeath is by no means unpleasant for your spirit does not die. The body though it is dead can repair itself if flesh is eaten (Allah created meat -eating?) and Undead Retrovirus's in the body alter genetics within the body to process the meats after dead and convert it into material for survival. You would go on like this for eternity. Your spirit would be one with the world and with the dead. A trully worthwhile experience.

Rbels scored yet another victory against the remaining government troops as over 2000 men stormed a suburb outside of the capital, manned by 600 soldiers loyal to the Mullah. PSF troops met stiff resistance from machine gun emplacements and sniper fire since the Mullah's forces have had time to regroup and fortify their positions, but sandbags and pillboxes were no match for 3 captured T-62 tanks and three recently purchased 120mm AMG-1 self-propelled guns. After four hours of fierce fighting the area was finally taken, driving out the last government troops from within 10 miles of Sumnis. over 345 PSF rebels were killed in the assault, with about 150 on the opposing side. The lower casualty rates, however, were in part owed to mass-scale surrenders when a number of squads were surrounded and captured and many government troops decided to defect. So far, 256 POWs have been taken and 63 defections have occured.

On the other side of the country, the Mullah's troops did manage to orchestrate a counter attack from their stronghold in Gul-Akad, a small city on the eastern part of the island. 1000 men backed up by mortars, armor and Hind helicopters attacked a mountain holdout of rebel forces. RPGs and machine gun emplacements took a horrific tole, killing or wounded almost half the assaulting force and took out two tanks and a single chopper, but eventually the PSF forces withdrew.

(ooc:AaN would be the ideal manner of nation to play the capitalists responsible for installing the old govt' if you haven't any other offers by the time I post this! FBCo.plc, a massive company with fingers in every pie more or less dominates the nation, it's chairman Mr.Eustace Brown is long-term president of the nation. AaN of course lies in the Bay of Bengal, as evident on real world maps.
The nation is of Christian and Muslim majority, though the white Christians dominate the nation often at the expense of Muslims- the Hindu minority is oppressed to a much greater degree, and once attempted rebellion during the Azazian war. [/rambling about the culture]
I'm not sure if you've decided who you want to win, so feel free to post/telegram me to make sure I don't go over-board supporting the government if you want the communists to win or something like that.)

Mr.Giles for a moment feared the imposing Brown was about to strike him, as the president raged.

"Socialists! Again! Dunyabi provides our second highest oil revenues, our primary foreign fuels concern! They're not getting away with it this time!" He boomed, Brown Co Towers seeming to shake even as company shares did. Giles opened his mouth to say "Communists" but the correction never dared pass his lips.

Eustace was remembering the farce that was the defence of the Parmis archipelago, conquered for but a few weeks before liberation by the Beddgelen socialists.

FBCo.plc's domination of the islands was brought to bear within the hour, with the first news broadcasts displaying scenes of a hastily arranged Muslim protest against the attempted Dunyabi coup.
That only ended when a report on the possible economic impact had been drafted, and a report by noted economist Rich Collins whipped the Christian businessmen into a panic to rival the Muslims' rage.

Mr.Giles tried desperately to contact the Mullah for news on his situation. Would Andaman and Nicobar be undertaking a police action with her own troops? Was the Mullah's position strong enough to make do with arms shipments?

While it is against Albananian Policy to intervene in the affairs of other nations, our great dictator couldnt help but sympathize with the PFS, and their struggle. Our dictator would like to state that even though our nation cannot contribute militarily, our IEC* workers stand ready to help the proud men and women of the PFS to rebuild their country once it has been won back from the oppression of religious fundamentalism.
It is the Albananian view that religion can only serve to hurt the people, and that it is the governemts duty to root out any religious thoughts among the populace.

Mullah Hosni Abdul Mohammed fidgetd uncomfortably in the hard wooden chair within the small city building his troops were using as a command HQ in Gul-Akad. Unlike the partly westernized and cosmopolitan Sumnis, Gul-Akad was a tiny provincial city that barely had running water and electricity, let alone accomodations suitable to the Mullah's extravagant tastes. He missed his old palace dearly, with its gardens and wall murals and tiny man-made waterfalls. And he missed the taste of good, well seasoned quail and date. All there was to eat in this accursed backwater was bread, bread and more bread.

But at least the city was theirs, and not in the hands of the godless rebel faction.

Carefully reading over the telegram from Giles, he began to type out a response on the antique typewriter, stroking his beard thoughtfully amd speaking aloud as he did so. "Mr. Giles, I can assure you the situation is under control the rebels have made so much ground because we were unprepared for an attack of this magnitude. Now that we have regrouped and rearmed, our well trained and well armed professional soldiers should make short work of those filthy communist infidels. We currently have 30,000 troops to their 24,000 and outnumber them in tanks by a 3 to 1 advantage. Add to that the fact that they have no air power to speak of, and we seem in a good position to.."

An aid burst into the office, rifle and sheet of paper in hand. "Your excellency, the rebels have mounted rocket and mortar attacks in the hill forts outside Gul-Akad! And those planes we couldn't account for.. well, after four Alpha jets strafed our troops north of the capital, we think we know where they went off to. We managed to shoot one down, but.. we also lost a patrol boat on the west coast to sabotage."

The Mullah's expression never changed, his eyes maintaining their same dark ferocity, the corners of his mouth turned downward in a disapproving frown. "This has gone on long enough. Order a full-out assault on rebel positions outside Gul-Akad. Patrol the city for suspected rebel sympathizers, and have them publically castrated and decapitated to discourage further acts of treachery. And tell the commanders to fortify and hold those damn positions outside Sumnis! Tell them anyone who moves a step back I will personally see executed. Understand?"

The aid nodded and scampered out, and the Mullah began to ammend his message to his benefactors. "However, perhaps a small deployment with air support couldn't hurt our cause, as much as we are capable of handling this on our own.."
17-09-2003, 17:00
To Albanania, from the PSF:

Your generous offer is accepted. Our troops control completely and totally the south end of the island, and attacks there are highly improbable. If you wish to get started before the war is over, there would be a good place. Towns and villages are in need of repairs to plumbing systems, roads and electrical grids.

We must disagree with your position on religion, however. When Marx referred to it as the "opium of the masses", h meant that it can be used as a tool to lull the population into complacency, not that it was evil in an of itself. In our experiance, religion can be used tot he opposite effect: to whip the population into patriotic resistance against a foreign backed oppressor. Aside from which, Dunyabi is too heavily religious for such measures to work.

Galdania is currently involved in numerous troop deployments around the world, but would be willing to send two artillary divisions and sixteen infantry platoons to aid the PSF revolution.

We will also send 400 million tons of grain (we're trying to get rid of it, we have way too much), and construction teams to build automobile manufacturing facilities, which could be used, during wartime situations, to build tanks and other military vehicles.
17-09-2003, 17:12
The response from the anti-communist forces led by the Mullah:

"WHAT? Allow foreign troops in our territory? Who do these people think they are? Do they think we want infidels on our own soil, even if it is to drive the communists back? The people will not stand for it. Tell them we don't need them and that Adaman and Nicobar has already promised us significant aid. If their troops show up here, turn them back. There's nothing to keep whoever these people are from replacing me.. I mean, er, us.. with a puppet government of their own choosing."

The Peoples Republic is worried by this spread of Communism. However we are also concerned by the oppressive nature of the current government. Perhaps if assurances were made to us that there would be reforms after the rebellion has been crushed we could be persuaded to offer support against the rebels.
17-09-2003, 17:18
We demand that Freedom Country withdraws its forces from Dunyabi immediately. This civil war is not of your concern, and the peaceful people pose no threat to your country.

Should you not comply, we will be forced to take action in order to defend Dunyabi from attack.

After a brief consultation with the FBCo board, during which Mr.Giles' correspondance with the Mullah was considered, the president's motion to send the assault ship Prosperous to secure the Mullah's position and provide a secure base from which governmental forces may strike out.

1,400 Nicobarese Marines were embarked, along with four Super Cobra helicopter gunships, twelve CH-46 Sea Knight transport helicopters, and -in storage (they'd have to be unloaded and find an airstrip from which to operate)- eight F4 Phantom, and four F-16.

The gunboat AN-89 would provide escort.

President Brown addressed the nation, stating that this little uprising would not be allowed to threaten the legitimate government of Dunyabi, nor the interests of the AaN islands.

"We've put a lot into this for thirty-five years" he muttered after the address "and I'll be damned if a rabble of pinkos are going to take it away."

"Over a little backwater like this? There's hardly anyone there? Damn communists!" Brown was frustrated. He hadn't expected communist powers to care much for such a tiny state.

"Perhaps, sir, their economies need oil as much as our own, sir." Ventured Giles.

"Well we'll have to blockade the island. Neither communists nor capitalists must get in. This is a company affair, Giles. Everyone but the Mullah ought to know that."

"Uhm, yes sir."

Shortly, ships were being diverted from the west Nicobar oil field. Across the Arabian Sea raced three DDG-1 Destroyers, five GM Frigates, and seven Heavy Coast Guard Cutter Magistrate II Class gunboats.

Deployment of battleships was decided against. "Too much expense, we want to keep people out, not kill everyone inside." insisted Giles as he handed on Brown's orders.

At the moment I'm viewing this as a fairly minor conflict in a puppet state (not puppet in the NS sense- I don't even know the Dunyabi player IRL) requiring of a police action- but we've not had a fight in a long time, so..[shrug]

Albanania transports flying directly into the nation are engaged by fire from the blockade even as the first AaN troops disembark from the assault ship via their LCACs.

President Brown is alarmed, and demands that aggressors stand down, as events begin to spiral out of control.
17-09-2003, 17:56
The contingent of marines attempting to land on Dunyabi does not go entirely unharassed. Fast PSF torpedo boats, mounting no gun larger than a 40mm MG but with two torpedo tubes on the underside, launch a surprise attack from a small cove on the island's eastern shore where they have hidden as soon as the transports get withina mile og Gul-Akad. The three craft do not expect, nor attempt, to do any overall serious damage, simply firing off torpedos at the gunboat and two of the transports and then running for their lives. Their intention is less to seriously cripple the force than to demoralize it by killing troops before any even get ashore.

In response to Alatarn:

The PSF doesn't require assistance against Freedom Country, as AaN boats simply won't let them in to drop their troops. Unfortunatly, we do require assistance against the AaN colonialist thugs who are attempting to land in territory controlled by the Mullah. We only have a few patrol boats, so we can't provide a proper escort.. if you can somehow manage to get troops in, we would be eternally grateful.

To Albanania: We don't think it's necessary for your country to put such an enormous strain on your economy. We are a small country, and three million workers would be greatly overkill. We only have a few major cities, and could probably more than make due with well under a million. Your generosity will not go unrewarded; we remember our allies and friends in this conflict, and after our long struggle is over rest assured we will see Albanania benefit for your efforts.
17-09-2003, 17:56
OOC: Well I figured that since my troops arent actually going to participate in any fighting, they were excepted. Albanania is only protecting its own citizens.

And do you know how many people it takes to rebuild a nation in two years? I figured roughly three million.

OOC: It's not like the whole thing has been leveled by carpet bombing. Most places in the countryside didn't sustain alot of damage, and city reconstruction would be a relativly simple task. Plenty of unemployed Dunyabians are around to do the grunt labor, what they are most in need of is engineers and experts to help them in areas such as electricity restoration and road construction.. as well as teachers and education experts to get schools back up and running.

(sorry if I jumped the gun with sending marines ahead on hover-craft landing craft, Dunyabi, it seemed everyone else had arrived in an instant, and since we were amongst the first to respond, and aren't far away, I supposed we'd be there too.)

In AaN, frigates, destroyers and gunboats put to sea intending to re-enforce the islands and oil-fields, as further frigates and fighter aircraft make for Dunyabi. D/E hunter submarines creep westards to boulster the blockade.
17-09-2003, 18:02
OOC: I'm guessing the PSF are fighting from one side of the country across to the other? Because I was going to land the shipment of armour where the PSF are fighting from (friendly territory - skip round the blockade).

We will send reinforcements to the frontline positions held by PSF forces. Air transports are being prepared, and they will ferry 59 Para to Dunyabi via an erratic route so as to avoid attack and the main elements of the blockade.

59 Para roughly numbers less than 350 men, but they are of the highest training, ability and armament.

Most of the oil platforms are still manned by AaN workers. A handful extremely close to Sumnis have been taken over by PSF troops, who are holding them with machine guns and rocket propelled grenades.

PSF troops made another attempt to dislodge government forces near Gul-Akad, raining down mortar fire, artillery shells and homemade rocket bombs. They made slight advances, taking several of the fortified hills near the city, though still not in sight of Gul-Akad itself. The attack threw the enemy forces into chaos, thwarting their plans for a counterattack on that front.

Near Sumnis, troops loyal to the Mullah launched an armored spearhead against the otuskirts of the city, coming under heavy anti-tank fire. 10 T-55 tanks were forced to withdraw, but created heavy PSF casualties; an estimated 350 guerillas were killed in the attack. The Mullah's propaganda officers play this up as a huge victory, and combined with the new prescence of AaN troops the morale soars among the ranks.

President Brown again states his nation's preparedness to arrange some manner of peace-keeping arrangement.

The government of Dunyabi is threatened through violence, and as a long-time ally of Andaman and Nicobar (by which he means "we installed the Mullah 35 years ago, and run rigs in their oil fields") will not be neglected.

AaN fully intends to protect the nation from foreign manipulation (cough) whilest the government deals with the terrorists aligned against it.

Once right is done, AaN is willing to lead an international police force to see that order is maintained, and justice upheld.

OOC: A brief bit of geography. Gul-Akad in on the eastern coast, Sumnis on the west. The island isn't very large across, and the two cities are only about 50 miles from each other. The northern tip is sparsely inhabited and more traditional, and is controlled by government troops virtually unopposed. They also control about half of the eastern coastline. PSF troops control the majority of the western coast, and all of the southern half of the island. Most of the oil lies off the west coast, with a handful of platforms off of Gul-Akad but many more only a few miles from Sumnis,
17-09-2003, 18:16
OOC: So essentially the marines can land anywhere in the North or the northeastern half entirely unopposed. There are large, flat tracts of desert all around suitable for airstrip construction.

One last thing: Can I ge some specs on those marines? I.E., what's their training like, what are they armed with..?

(ooc:is there a govt controlled airport/airbase remaining? The AaN troops and helicopters will be willing to fight their way through anything preventing them from getting to one.)

Marines are glad to be greated warmly by the people they've been assured they're coming to defend from terror. A disproportionately high number of the soldiers are Muslim, Brown being keen to play on the defence of a faith he doesn't even follow, feeling sure it'll act as a barrier to socialist rebellion in the future.
They begin to unload and dispense Stinger shoulder-launched surface to air missiles, and LAW rockets to government armouries.

The first IEC workers have arrived, and started the rebuilding-process. The process is going smothly, except for one border city which has proven to contain many loyalists. half the Third Elite Infantry, a full 150 men are bottled up in the city, desperately fighting to preserve the peace and allow the work to continue. Without some relief, the work will not be able to go on.

Meanwhile, the Second Elite Infantry has missed its drop-zone by sixty-two kilometers due to a computer glitch, and are trapped behind loyalist lines to the east of the Capitol.

Ah, woops- I was a bit slow there. They'll land on the east, most likely.

They are professionals (if we sent a large force much would be conscripted Hindu grunts, but this small force is quite well trained). Often equipment is of old design. The M16 A1 is the standard infantry rifle, and M14 rifles, M40 sniper rifles, M60 machineguns are widely issued, along with LAW rockets, Stingers, light mortars, grenade launchers (ach..er..M40? Vietnam era-ish). Though much of it is old in design, it is newly manufactured, and so in good condition.

The FN P90 sub machinegun is probably the most modern arm they have.

Soldiers are mostly Muslim, keen to find a cause to fight for, while it may be noticed that most officers are white Christians, usually sons of big businessmen. They can be harsh, and while the men are well trained, the officers may not be flawless in command.

Lions lead by sheep/lambs/goats/donkeys/whatever.
17-09-2003, 18:24
OOC: Note that any attempts to land stuff in PSF territory, friendly or otherwise, are subject to AaN's response before I can use them. As nice as those tanks would be, it's hard to drive them if one of his subs shoots them out of the water. And Albanania.. west of the capital is the sea. Sumnis is on the western coast..
The AaN backed government has one airbase north of Gul-Akad. It's small and not designed for heavy bombers or large commercial jets, but it can handle helicopters and fighters easily.
17-09-2003, 18:26
OOC: Oh, from AaN's posts, I got the impression that the blockade was around the eastern coast (As they were reinforcing the Govt. positions).

If this is not the case then I will retract the statement.
17-09-2003, 18:28
First Outside's 4th Fleet has been dispacthed to the Arabian gulf. to keep an eye on the Dunyabi situation. The 4th Fleet consists of the following ships:

FOS Cotollus, Yatoi-class frigate, flagship
FOS Kaeido, Adler-class frigate
FOS Blue Star, Adler-class frigate
FOS Caronia, Adler-class frigate
FOS Liberty, Freedom-class destroyer
FOS Leon, Touchshriek-class destroyer
FOS Stalker, Dante-class troop transport, carrying 400 elite troopers and six state-of the art tanks.

We do not wish to take these into batlle, but if forces of a CACE member state are attacked, we will not hesitate to use them. We also have the 2nd Fleet (including the aircraft carrier FOS Red Arrow) on standby, in the case hostilities escalate.
17-09-2003, 18:29
OOC: Re-reading it, that's what I'm thinking too.

IC: The armored forces are a huge boon the PSF soldiers. The fact that trainers are coming as well is also fortunate, as there are few who actually know how to drive a tank. Handpicked troops spend all day and night practicing in secured areas outside Sumnis. Major troop movements are occuring, and the besiegers of Gul-Akad number 2500 now rather than 1000, and continue to gradually push back the defenders in the hills.

Marx had barely begun to get used to the idea of getting out of Dunyabi alive when he saw the newly arrived para-troopers. He called out to his men to be alert, and ready to disengage from the helpless trenched soldiers of the Mullahs front forces.

*************************************************************

The Second Elite Infantry suffered light casalties, roughly 60 men. With slightly over 240 men remaining, the Albananian soldiers would have to fight bravely to win.
Most of the men were tired, and some had lost their rifles in the commotion, and were now armed only with the laser-sharpened longswords of the Elite Guard. This was not going to be easy.

The loyalist troops, or the small contingent harassing and encircling the Altaran forces, were taken by surprise as the small group of better armed and better trained Galdanian troops smashed into their rear flank. Dozens of troops were felled before the loyalists could put up anything resembling a defense, but by then it was all over. Surrounded and running out of ammo, over 200 soldiers had no choice but to surrender.

The prescence of Altaran troops bolsters confidence on the front lines. They are greeted by cheering throngs of rebels and civilians, the latter of whom toss the Altaran men bags of food, water bottles, or small bags of qat as gifts.

The resultant intel is worrying. It appears that significant armour has come into rebel hands. This is a serious threat even to the Nicobarese on hand. While they've been confident of their ability to repulse infantry and limited air attacks, their tank busting capacity is limited to a handful of ground-attack ready aircraft, and light anti-tank weapons in the hands of infantry.

The commander on hand asks he highest ranking native he can find if they should mind him calling in armour support from home. He knows that native approval is of little concern to president Brown, but surprisingly enough, he at least wants to appear like he has their interests at heart.

The Elite Guard disengaged the front-line fighters, focusing instead on the newcomers. On Captain Marx command, they took the trenches formerly occupied by the Mullahs soldiers, while the scattered government forces fled to the hills to regroup.
17-09-2003, 19:44
The rebels know that now is their chance to strike before the AaN marines can call in armor support and gain vast ground superiority. The previous troop movements begin to take form into a definite plan of attack. All 250 T-72s and 100 ZSU-23s are assembled into a massive armored force, along with 1000 "mechanized" infantry armed with AK-101s and Stinger missiles, with a handful of RPGs. Which is to say, troops in pickup trucks with heavy machine guns mounted on the back. This mechanized force prepares for a thrust northeast from Sumnis, to assault and overwhelm the AaN garrison at the airbase. A second attack comes directly from the east towards the western flank of Gul-Akad with 1500 soldiers strong, and a third thrust from the south with the 2500 besiegers lobbing some artillery and making a massive charge into the city. From the south, troops are brought up to reinforce the garrison at Sumnis. The aim is to surround and overwhelm the 4500 defenders of Gul-Akad, pinning them in and trapping them against the sea with no avenue of retreat. It doesn't appear as if the Mullah's troops will hold out from the last two attacks; only the ability of the AaN troops to repulse the tank surge will determine whether Gul-Akad is surrounded or the garrison has a chance of driving the invaders back.

The remaining rebel armor is concentrated in the capitol, 4 T-62s and 8 T-72s with 3 AMG-1 assault guns to defend against an armored attack.

The Second Elite has taken heavy casualties by now, having lost nearly a third of thoir numbers to the sudden Altairian assault. Their commander orders them to spread along the edges of the trenches, then flee into the hills to regroup later. The men are ordered to take any supplies they can find, including ammo, vehicles, food and enemy uniforms. Captain Marx hopes that most of what remains of his men will be able to infiltrate the enemy forces this way, and get out of the nation safely.

(ooc:I'm about to pop out, but only for a few minutes. Hopefully we can hold out until I get back. Not that I mind losing; if that happens I'd just rather be here for it :) )

The large movement towards AaN forces does not go unnoticed. Eight F-4 Phantom armed with Maverick AGM missiles join the four Super Cobra in their attack on the advancing units. Hopefully the missiles can be loosed from range beyond that of the gun-mounting ZSUs, but given the involvement of so few aircraft, even an unlikely 100% kill rate would take out just twenty enemy vehicles.

The Nicobarese infantry requested any armour support the government could give, stating that the airstrip was the best chance any of them had for reinforcement or evacuation.

The airstrike is successful to an extent, primarily because many of the tank crews are barely trained. Alpha jets aren't launched because the only purpose they would serve against superior Nicobar air power is as cannon fodder. 13 of the tanks at the front of the spearhead were destroyed or disabled beyond repair, while 3 of the AA guns were totalled. Still the advance presses on all fronts, with infantry attacking the city from the west and south meeting stiff resistance. With only light artillery support, the advance barely makes it to the outskirts before stalling under heavy machine gun and tank fire. the success of the assault will depend on the PSF armor and troops driving AaN marines from their airstrip and thus taking out air support and encircling the city simultaneously.

"We've incited great religious feeling. We can't back out now, not without taking a kick in the aproval rating."

Giles was doing his best to reason with a section of the board. The level of foreign interference was likely to wipe out the detachment already deployed, embarras AaN with another military defeat, and cause voter unrest, especially amongst the angry Muslim population.

Another assault ship would be sent, with frigate escort and fighter cover. This time she'd carry fewer men and helicopters, and more tanks, light, medium, and battle.

Would they make it in time?

Back at the airstrip, it didn't look too good. Blows had been struck against the enemy, but their advance didn't seem to have been halted. Mortars were prepared to break up infantry and light vehicle formations so that snipers and machinegun nest might pick them off, and anti-tank teams dispersed- but in reality they could expect to inflict some damage, and delay the inevitible, rather than halt the large armoured formation.

Dear me!
With impending missile deployments, president Brown's hand has been forced.

B1B Lancer and B2 Spirit bombers are fueled and armed on Car Nicobar ahead of takeoff.

Their targets will be foreign military assest- primarily missile artillery or other high value threats, and not the rebels, which are considered to be too fragmented and light in composition to merit such expensive strikes.

Two Spirits and eight Lancers take on excited crew.

(ooc:they're not meant to arrive in time to stop the assault on the airstrip, probably (unless we hold out better than expected) but should have more than enough time to arrive ahead of further foreign deployments, such as the scuds.)
18-09-2003, 03:40
OOC: Whether you hit the foreign deployments of munitions and the like is up to their players. I won't consider them to have arrived in my possession till they have survived or been destroyed by your attacks.

The armored thrust presses on, T-72 tanks lobbing shells are troop formations and grounded aircraft while the ZSU's pound away at any that try to take off. The ZSUs also seem to be being used in an unconventional fashion, as the gunners use the 23mm machine guns to target groups of infantry when no aircraft are available. They do succeed in damaging the assault group, taking out almost a dozen technicals and jeeps along with a half dozen T-72s and dispering many of the now 'dismounted' infantry fighting the AaN soldiers. Still they surge forward, the armored group being at the tip of the spearhead as the guerillas can't possibly hope to beat the professionally trained Nicobar troops on even ground. The ZSUs also take casualties, their light armor doing little to stop LAWs or any anti-material sniper weapons the enemy may possess.

Meanwhile, the Mullah is trying desperatly to halt the advance into Gul-Akad with marginal success. Streetfighting has begun and several of the loyalist tanks have been taken out, the vehicles losing their mobility advantage in the cities extremely narrow streets. Still, PSF troops are still only fighting on the outskirts. Aids and advisors urge the Mullah to abandon the city and retreat north while there is still time, but he refuses to budge. Retreating and leaving the country's holiest shrine, the Wadi Akad Mosque, in communist hands would be disgraceful in the eyes of Allah, so his thinking goes. Despite their tenacity and often the innaccuracy of their fire, the PSF troops are careful not to damage the Mosque in any way, shape or form.. allowing several hundred loyalist troops to hole up there unopposed.

The ZSU's firing against infantry inflict casualties unseen since the Azazian invasion of east Nicobar. Dozens are killed, scores badly wounded.

Mortar teams prove quite skilled at walking fire around the edges of dug in positions, keeping back light vehicles and infantry, but attracting tank fire for their trouble.

The situation is grim, and the Nicobarese front line is gradually falling back to secondary dug-outs, hoping that the relatively few tank traps and mines they had time to lay will appear a more serious obsticle than they perhaps are. As the assault ship carrying armour sails across the Arabian sea (with its pre-mentioned escorts and air cover), the marine commander begins to fear it won't arrive soon enough.
Thinking ahead he wonders if and when surrender may be realistic.

High above and elsewhere on the island, the Nicobarese stealth and heavy bombers engage what they believe to be Scud transports (maybe our intel is off, I suppose it's up to the chap supplying the Scuds, maybe we got 'em, maybe we just hit a load of our own petrol tankers or something)
18-09-2003, 15:09
59 Para begin the advance on Gul-Akad. They move slowly inside the city, heading straight for the Mullah's main base of operations....

In other news, the 1st Fleet has been dispatched to the area. It will remain off shore and will not engage any vessel or aircraft (unless fired upon first).

The fleet will stand by in case of a serious problem, and if AaN plans to withdraw from the country due to the complete inability of the Mullah to hold onto his country, it will cover their move back to their country to prevent any attack by other nations.

We do not wish for open war; we are simply assuring that The People of Dunyabi can accomplish their goal.

The situation in Gul-Akad is quickly turning into a bloodbath. Vicious street fighting and house to house combat begins to occur, and civilians are often unintentionally caught int he crossfire. Desperate loyalist troops sometimes use non-combatants as human shields, forcing PSF guerillas to either shoot their own countrymen or geteviscerated by sniper fire as they try to make a decision. Several homes have been leveled by shelling, and the loyalists are constructing road blocks and barricades out of scrap metal and destroyed vehicles. More tanks fall to RPGs as the PSF makes its advance.

On the northern front, the tank fore makes one last push to drive out the AaN soldiers. The fierce fighting has left the attackers with only so much ammunition left, and if this advance fails the tanks may need to fall back and wait for supplies to arrive before trying again. The T-72s surge forward with reckless abandon, almost two dozen becoming casualties of tank traps or mines in their haste, pounding AaN front lines with shells and 7.62mm MG fire. Soldiers from within disabled tanks (those alive, anyway) use their shot vehicles as cover to fight from, spraying the enemy soldiers with automatic fire from the covers of their turrets. A few infantrymen seem to have brought grenade launchers, which they use to lob explosive into the trenches and dugouts. No more than 5 or 6, but enough to cause serious confusion and casualties.

59 Para, failing to find and eliminate the Mullah, divert towards the docks. They move quickly and quietly through the darkening city - making for the AaN ships.

The troops head towards the transports...

"Red Friend Leader, This is red guard leader, we have entered Dunyabi airspace, this is as far as we can go. Good luck."
The 12 escorting Sea Foxes pulled away and streaked back towards the waiting Ark Anachy some 300 miles distant. The 28 Sea Vixens clustered around the transports and the formation dropped to sea level and headed for the coast at full speed (590mph - as fast as the Newry can go).

Dunyabi - they are all yours. The Vixens have enough fuel for 4 hours airtime, and the transports enough for 6 should they need to hang around and await a landing slot. The Vixens are armed but mainly for A-A at the mo, A-S stores are on the Newry. Landing - The Vixens are able to use carriers and can land on a straight road if need be. the Newry though big is able to land 'rough' on a flat bit of ground. The VC10 can land on any reasonably intact strip, we may not be able to fly it out again, but we'll deal with that problem later. We have the 45,000 ton carrier Ark Anachy and it's escorting flotilla of destroyers on its way but will not be there for another day at least. PS you can keep the aircraft when this is over, but we want the crews back. (we will train your men to fly them)

The battle for the city raged below as planes circled above, dropping the 9th Luft-Droppov Division down onto strategic locations in Gul-Akad, namely the airport. As the planes fly ever lower, AA weapons fire from out of nowhere, blowing up at least six of the panes before their crew can make the drop. 9 Blue Valkyrie Fighter-Bomber Strike Aircraft (which can travel at Mach 2.8 ) make steep dives towards AA installations, firing missiles at the sites. One of the craft is hit, and blows up in mid-air, sending peices of flaming metal through the air.

To Arrivia the preisdent, after some delay, admits that AaN could do with assistance. Despite his reluctance to share FBCo.plc profits, he realises that all may be lost without assistance, and is willing to accept help with promise of favourable negotiation following a victory.

The marines have now suffered hundreds of casualties killed and wounded, and are defending positions on the very edge of the airstrip itself. All surrounding grounds have been lost in the face of communist armour.

AaN never planned a defence for a situation in which multiple foreign powers joined with a significant domestic force in Dunyabi against the Mullah. An isolated rebellion, meddling by a single foreign power, these things were considered, but.. this situation is a shock.

The nation however has for a long time considered the military a priority -in light largely of the Azazian occupation of eastern islands- and with one of the world's most powerful economies behind him, president Brown decides that enough is quite frankly, enough.

Further sorties are mounted by B1B and B2 bombers flying out of the home islands and friendly centres of operation on the sub continental mainland. Essentially many of AaN's aircraft need only to pass the witdth of Iran before finding their targets. This surely allows a great rate of bombardment and reinforcement than is afforded to the rebels' supporters.

Shortly behind the bombers come Hercules and Galaxy transports. Paras and light artillery guns, as well as general supplies are dropped around the airstrip. Sickeningly, some are bound to fall on enemy lines, and some 76mm guns are likely to end up firing against the marines' positions (yes, we're paradroping some light artillery pieces. It can be done with landrovers and such, we can darn well try it with light guns :) ). Given the prior situation, the trade off is considered worth while.

On the horizon, forces attacking the airstrip may notice the second Nicobarese assault ship and her frigate and destroyer escorts, as the ship's crew struggle to secure tanks to the hovercraft landing craft.
The AaN armour will be outnumbered when it arrives, and this reinforcement far from secures the airstrip's future.

The Arrivian forces have finally arrived to relieve their AaN allies. The Scorpio battle group begins to engage the Straknityokso and its support craft. 24 Ames class torpedoes are launched by the various submarines, and a flurry of gunfire descends upon the enemy ship as the Antares, Graffias, and Dschubba let lose their main guns. 50 Griffon interceptors take off from the carriers to defend against the enemy aircraft. Transports carrying the 8th Armored Division are expected arrive with the Taurus battle group overnight...

Needless to say, AaN planes come under furious AA fire as soon as they get within the ZSU's maximum altitude range. This doesn't stop most of the bmbs form getting through, which wreak havoc on the armored columns front ranks, The handful of men on the ground with Stingers expend most of their missiles trying to take down the supply planes. Meanwhile, a supply convoy with extra shells arrives to relieve the tanks on the rear, which move forward to replace the tanks in front that are quickly running out of ammunition or have been torn apart by airborne ordinance. The freshly resupplied vehicles engage in heavy shelling of the AaN positions. Those 76mm guns that fall into rebel hands are immediatly turned on the pieces that managed to make it to Marine positions, the gunners aiming to kill the artillery crews before they can do significant damage, engaging them in a fierce artillery duel.

The 28 donated Sea Vixens, manned by foreign pilots but under PSF control, streak towards the battlefield where they attempt to strafe the infantry lines with low altitude bombing runs and their heavy 30mm machine guns. Unfortunatly, they most likely won't arrive before AaN reinforcement armor does. Once this furious assault is over, PSF troops advance into the now vacant primary dugouts and fortifications abandoned by AaN troops and attempt to engage them directly.

EDIT: One last thing. Over the din of battle, a large black van with an enormous loudspeaker and audio set bombards the AaN marines with propaganda. "Fellow Muslims! It is not right that Western imperialist have set brother against brother. Cease fighting for your maniacal overlords, and join our cause! Lay down your arms and come out of your trenches, and you will be treated well and released without harm!" This serves more to attempt to intimidate and distract the AaN forces rather than achieve actual defections.

While the bombers are flying far too high for Stinger or 23mm fire from the ground to be even a slight concern, the transports coming in low to drop supplies become vulnerable. Central command back in Nicobar hadn't realised that the rebels possesed Stingers, and a Seaknight helicopter operating from the second assault ship was lost, killing eight men both aboard and on the ground below. Worse still, a Hercules transport strayed too far west after dropping its supplies, and the port wing was raked by ZSU fire, disabling both engines and forcing a very harsh emergency landing almost a mile behind enemy lines. The three surviving crew-men, white Christian FBCo.plc employees, are armed only with M1911 .45 pistols, and the rebels can scarcely have failed to notice the huge aircraft coming down.

Marine commanders attempt to get in contact with loyalist forces, hoping that they may be faring better. Even as they do, several LCAC glide over the horizon, bringing in the first armoured units. Not a moment too soon, as rebel tank guns and captured artillery reduce the marines' own artillery.

The first dozen AN-60A and B tanks ashore attempt to make their way to the airstrip. Eurofighter Typhoons are diverted away from the marines in order to cover the armour.

(The AN-60 early marks are armed with 105mm guns and reactive armour. Our best tanks remain in the home islands.)

The tanks face overwhelming numerical superiority from the PSF forces. However, it's almost certain that their drivers and gunners are far more experianced than the PSF tank crews, so the armored force loses a half dozen of its vehicles before it can sufficiently retaliate. The tanks turn their attention to the enemy armor, distracted enough for the AaN infantry to experiance a momentary lull in shelling, though PSF guerillas continue to engage the marines with rifles and the tanks with what few RPGs are available. The Seavixen pilots aren't much of a match for the Typhoons, and PSF troops are too close for a safe strafing run, so they stick to guarding the armored column from further airborne devastation. Already, several dozen PSF tank hulks litter the battlefield.

The Loyalists report that they are holding the city by a thin margin. PSF fighters have advanced to very near the city center, but at great cost to both sides. Loyalists and socialists both know a full frontal assault on the other is suicide, so the fighting degenerates into sniping and isolated skirmishes. So far, Gul-Akad remains a bloody and unresolved stalemate.

Two squads of technical mounted PSF troops move in to secure the downed AaN air crew. They bark orders to surrender in Arabic, and even if they dont understand the language the gestures are fairly clear. None fire unless fired upon first. Remarkably, in the event of a successful capture the crewmen would be treated fairly well, suffering little more than chafing rope used to tie their hands and the occasional verbal jibe.

(OOC: This prisoner situation seems a good place to do some character RP, since this has been mostly military maneuovers so far. Feel free to start it, if you wish.)

Again Central Command underestimates the enemy. Central Command is over 80% white Christian, and white Christian AaN society tends to almost inately look down on Arabic and Muslim society.

The first wave of 12 medium tanks is about to be joined by 24 light tanks (upgraded M41s) when the enemy armour comes unexpectedly into view.

"Jesus Christ! There's dozens of 'em!"

The AaN crews are quicker to react to the sudden confrontation than are their inexperienced foe, and at reasonably short range their skill shows as they knock out a disproportionate number of hostiles. Confidence grows, and the marines begin to fight back with a new lease on life.
Pushing back the enemy tanks begins to look like a bad idea once they start to regroup. The 125mm guns of the T-72s on hand (you have T-72s, right?) gradually start to show their superiority, and AaN tanks start to drop out of action. When the light tanks arrive the situation is starting to decline once more. Their 90mm guns are completely out-ranged by the enemy armour, and they don't even try to engage.

As in the bloody Azazian war, the light tanks are used in a rather suicidal charge to break unsuspecting infantry. Having convinced the crews that this is a holy war, and considering that the tanks are all but obsolete anyway, the tactic goes down well with command.

24 light tanks with reactive armour (ie.hopefully they can take small arms and grenade hits, but tank rounds or such will go right through them) charge towards the rebel infantry, .30 and .50 cal MG's blazing, and 90mm shells bursting. Most don't really expect to survive the battle, but are incensed by the stories they've been given of rebel brutality against all faithful Muslims..

(ooc:I am going to bed to whimper with a stomach ache, so I shan't try to rush in a character bit now, as I'd probably spoil it in my haste- I will address that to-morrow though, providing no one's come along and nuked the island or anything in my absence. Looking forward to it!)

Escorted by the warships of the Taurus battlegroup, the 7th Armored Division arrives on the northernmost island of Al-Aqbay. Though strategically unimportant, the island contains most of the oil holdings of Arrivia. Al-Agbay is expected to be only lightly defended, which makes it the perfect proving grounds the relatively inexperienced 8th Armored Division.
Meanwhile, the Griffon interceptors, though suffering heavy losses (17 fighters lost), have managed to keep enemy planes away from the Antares. With the enemy assault successfully repulsed, Silver Eagle fighter/bombers move in to strike at the enemy aircraft carrier, while the Graffias launches its long range bombers to help pave hte way for AaN land forces.

Dragging themselves out of the badly damaged Hercules, the three airmen seem in reasonable health. One has perhaps broken his left arm, but his .45 automatic is more comfortable in the right anyway- briefly.

Jack dropped the weapon as soon as the trio spied a pair of approaching trucks carrying armed men. The other two men were less keen to disarm, the co-pilot especially was indignant. "Back off!" he yelled in return to the half-understood Arabic calls for surrender, his pistol thrust forward.

"I dunno Ste, we look pretty far from the airstrip. I don't know if we'd make .." Stephen the co-pilot cut him off, demanding twice that Jack "shut up!".

The pilot was in two minds, weapon still in his hand, but not pointed with any real purpose as Stephen's was. He couldn't think straight. Would it be best to delay? Did that mean fighting? Would anyone be coming? Could they come? What would happen if they gave up? What would happen if they gave up and were released or rescued? Would he loose his job?

The Arrivian troops arrive to find the island mostly deserted. Only a few isolated squads of snipers and machine gunners hinder their progress, and these retreat almost as soon as they come under significant fire. The PSF garrison knows it has no chance of holding the island, but has plans to make it useless to the enemy forces; or at least, costly to repair what has been destroyed. The PSF troops plant explosives on a number of the oil rigs they are supposed to be defending, as well as a small munitions dump where their base of operations on the island is located. Arrivian troops would arrive to find it deserted, save for a few binocular wielding spotters hiding off in the hills. As soon as the enemy soldiers try to move in to secure the area, said spotters would detonate the charges, hoping to catch a good number of Arrivian troops in the blast.

Near the AaN airbase, PSF ground troops have retreated in the face of the enemy light armor, taking refuge in their technicals and keeps behind the line of tanks after being badly chewed up by machine gun fire. Their abscene gives the Sea Vizens another chance to make a strafing run, which they do in earnest with 30mm machine guns and air to ground rockets. As soon as the bombardment relents, the tanks make a massive armored charge against the infantry and light tanks, to close in with and scatter the former and destroy the latter with their main guns. The T-72 crews look at the light tanks as almost secondary priorities, so confident are they in the ability of their armor to block the 90mm shells and of their own guns to take out the enemy vehicles. The tanks proceed on regardless of casualties, their goal to close in at such distances that the AaN marines will have no choice but to retreat.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Sergeant Al-Kud's word, from the two technicals poured two squads of heavily armed PSF soldiers, dressed in irregular uniforms and bearing numerous AK variants. He knew the air crew wouldn't be foolish enough to attempt resistance, not staring down the barrels of 12 assault rifles and a couple of .50 heavy machine guns. Westerners were foolish, he knew, but not stupid or suicidal. He approached the trio calmly with no hint of fear or apprehension, rifle slung over his shoulder and hands clasped behind his back. Luckily for the troops under his command, he had a fairly good grasp of English. "Well, you three have found yourself in something of a situation, hmm? Take a look around you.. you are all but surrounded, and like it or not you are our prisoners. Lay down your arms, and you may have a chance to see your home, your wives, and your families again."

The marines were briefly further heartened as their light tanks dashed through. Most of them had seen dramas and films about the battle in east Nicobar, during which light tanks had so nearly saved the day against improbable odds.

Once again though "nearly" was the word. The rebel counter attack was so much heavier than their own drive had been. Men in places were forced to full retreats, using the surprisingly intact light tanks for cover as they went. Until the enemy aircraft swept in, and began to pick off the armour. Light tanks and infantry were battered by 30mm fire, the marines were exhausted by now.

The Typhoons on the other hand had done next to nothing. Realising that the airstrip was vital not only to the units on the ground, but to their own survival -they couldn't get home on remaining fuel- the Eurofighters, eight of them, keeping their distance, loose AMRAAM (they have four each in this case, and will loose eight first, then eight more.. et cetera, until they either obliterate the enemy aircraft, or run out of missiles) against the Sea Vixens.

Meanwhile, Liberation was begining to realise that the current policy in Dunyabi was frankly pointless. A change would be needed soon.

"For God's sake, Ste.." hissed Jack. The pilot had by now shruged and reluctantly laid down his sidearm, only the firey-eyed co-pilot Stephen remained armed, and he finally was waivering.

Eventually, following the Sgt's words, and the disarming of his comrades, he too gave up, throwing his weapon down with a grunt.

The remaining men of the 59 Para unit head towards the ships that are docked in the harbour of Gul-Akad. They plant explosive charges on three transports, set to detonate in 15 minutes time...

(ooc:I can't stay long enough to make a proper ic post, sorry, but I hope they're not targeting us, 'cause our assault ships are big frickin 20 odd thousand ton efforts several miles out at sea, and hovercraft (LCAC) were sent in to deploy units, before returning to the ships. I hope that was clear before. Anyone trying to get to them would have miles of sea to swim. Sea patrolled by cutters, D/E subs, and so on.)

Oh, I thought you were still offloading troops and equipment.

Well...this thing isn't quite as big as it was before...

OOC: Just a little note... I am only going to put my signiture on communication to other nation type posts, not RP posts like this one... it just makes more sense to me that way.

IC:
The T.N.V. Kang Sheng slipped silently underneath the waves with its caterpiller drive (ooc: I purchased one sub from Unum Veritas of his Seahorse class, which he claims is the silentest sub there is, and has a caterpiller drive. Go with it for the RP, please.). It's mission: to pierce the blockade by going through at its weakest area. It was shipping the 40 Type 54 Artillary Pieces ordered, along with a gift package of:

5 More Type 54
1,000 AKM Assault Rifle
100 Skorpion vz 61 Submachinegun
100 GSh-18
10 Field Kitchens.

(Hey, what can we say, we take care of our allies!)

Also aboard were the 20 Marx-Men, our most elite special forces, numbering only 20.

"Sir, the ship is coming up on the evil capitalist blockade!" said Lt. Illych to the captain of the ship, Captain Ivan Ivanovich. "Our glorious submarine of the glorious United Socialist States of Terepa will slip past their evil capitalist blockade easily, to assist our Glorious Communist Comrades!. Reduce sound emissions to the lowest possible levels. Workers of the World Unite!" he said. The ship continued in silently, hoping to make it to the harbor with the weapons. If it did, it would wait until it had a chance to move out, and then leave to pick up more troops.
28-09-2003, 15:20
OOC: Since no-one responeded, I'm going to assume the ship made it through.

IC: Captain Ivan Ivanovich smiled as the ship went silently through the blockade, the crew communicating through instant messaging software over the submarine's network. Once safely in the harbor, the captain said, "You may now speak." The weapons and the Marx-Men were unloaded, and the captain walked up a gantry to meet a rebel commander. Once another opening in the blockade was open, the submarine would leave to get more troops.

The Sea Vixens take heavy losses from the missile assault and are forced to pull back, half their number shot out of the sky and half the remaining aircraft too heavily damaged to continue fighting. ZSUs sputter flak into the enemy aircraft, or at least attempt to; the battle was likely at high altitude, and out of their firing range. The tanks, now in visual range of the airfield, continue their fight against the embattled AaN marines, raking infantry with machine gun fire and blasting at trench lines with their HE shells. Those not directly engaged in combat with the enemy troops begin firing shells at various airfield buildings, not exactly sure what to destroy but hoping to hit something important on a lucky shot. Given the experiance of the gunnery crew and the ranges involved, not all that many are expected to find their targets.

Meanwhile in Gul-Akad, the Mullah's troops began to organize a counterattack. With what remaining armor and artillery pieces left, Loyalist forces began to batter PSF positions, demolishing buildings in which they had taken up positions with little regard for civilian casualties. The PSF troops reply with RPG fire and homemade rocket attacks, but at this stage of the combat the Loyalist troops better training and armament is beginning to make a diference in the battle for the city.

The guerillas sneered at their battered and unarmed quarry, displaying rows of teeth yellowed by tobacco and general lack of dental hygene. They were a ragged lot, to be sure. Few wore uniforms; the PSF could not afford them, and those men with money to buy them usually opted for new boots or other utilitarian items instead. The only thing setting them apart from the regular citizens of Dunyabi was the occasional camouflage jacket and the red armbands tied onto their sleaves. One stepped forward, rifle raised, ready to strike Jack across the face with the muzzle of the Kalashnikov.

With a cry of pain, the guerilla fell to the ground, a woosh of air escaping his lungs as his legs were tripped out from under him and the wind knocked out of him. Over him stood the Sergeant, weapon pointed at the PSF soldier's face. "Revolutionary discipline, comrades.. we are supposed to be better than the foreign oppressors, are we not?" The soldier on the ground nodded hastily pushing himself to his feet and muttering a series of apologies in Arabic. Al-Kuds paid him no heed. "Collect their guns, and bind their arms and legs. It's only a short drive to the supply camp. Load them into the truck, and don't forget the blindfolds!"

Having fired their missiles both high above, and some distance away from the fighting below, the Typhoons escape the brunt of the relatively short range AA gunfire. One of a pair which ventured a little too close before being ordered back by the wing-leader suffered a single 23mm hit to the port wing, and was the first to land at the besiged airstrip. Damage was light, but it would be well to patch the scrape before returning to the skies.

There wasn't time, the other seven fighters needed to come in for fuel, and ideally re-armament, and the enemy were closing in.

The marines couldn't take much more. If anyone got out to tell the story of the defence, there would be medals to be had for sure. By now the strain of the siege-like conditions were taking a toll on even the most hardened soldiers. In a few areas, where elements did not fall back quite in line with adjacent units, squads were being over-run and forced to surrender. Perhaps two dozen men so far had been cut off and opted to throw down their arms, seeing no immediate prospect for recovery, as allied armour could be seen burning here and there.

Some of the hundreds of remaining men were starting to wonder why they were still fighting. Their officers couldn't stomach the prospect of defeat by a rag-tag bunch of pinkos (not again, anyway, heh), nor the idea that eight of Andaman's top-line fighters might fall into their hands.

A good mile or more from the middle of the fighting, the pilot of the downed Hercules was wondering if maybe he should have torched the plane before giving up.. as it happens, that didn't much matter. The burning engine had spread flames along the wing, and a series of moderate explosions were becoming progressively more violent.

Jack grimaced as a gunman made to tie his hands. Yeah, the arm's definitely broken he thought.

(ooc:To those who don't know, I've been in touch with Dunyabi via telegram and he wants me to take a greater role in the activities of the Mullah's forces, and has given me a run-down on roughly what's where, and what it's doing, if you follow.)

The AaN positions around the airstrip continue to be supplied by airdrops of medical gear and ammunition (for small arms, anti-tank and aircraft weapons, mortars, and so on). The highest ranking officer remaining alive and well is a Lt.Mountbaton, who has assumed command of the besieged marine detachment. It is clearly not possible for the marines to hold out without assistance against such superior numbers and armoured support.

Mountbaton had contacted Liberation, but it would be some time before a serious force could be shipped across the Arabian sea. He had tried to raise the Mullah's main force in Gul-Akad, but their situation appeared little better than that of the marines.

Finally he learned of a few thousand men loyal to the Mullah and positioned north of the airstrip, who are finally combat ready and well placed to attempt relief of the airstrip.

The Lt. is torn. He awaits clear orders from Liberation, but in the absence of a comprehensive reply, he must make some key decisions himself. The largest loyalist force is south in Gul-Akad, and in danger of being over-run and taken out of the war -it might be impossible to win the war as a whole without them. Should his main effort be to reinforce or rescue them?

The key strategic location, in Liberation's estimation, are the oil-fields of the north. These are still loyalist held, and keeping hold of them could cripple the rebels in the long-term. Should their protection be his priority?

Then their were the marines themselves and their airstrip.

The lt. made his decision. The loyalists to the north would commit a portion of their strength to a diversory attack on the rebels surrounding the airstrip. The AaN marines would take everything they could, destroy as much of what they could not, and attempt to break out to the north. Those loyalists remaining in the north would be instructed to dig in, prepare an airstrip to receive the eight Typhoons, and await the approach of the marines and those sent to divert rebel attention. Quite likely the rebels would follow up with a drive against the north.

Liberation was informed of the plan- the next air-drop to the strip would have to be the last -we can't have them supplying the location once it is in rebel hands. The ships on their way to deliver reinforcements would deploy them to the north, and then make south to extract the Mullah and his army, and relocate them to the north.

If we can get the rebels together in one place as they attack the north, perhaps our combined armies can crush them once and for all.. Mountbaton hoped.

The Mullah was told that he had to hold out until the AaN vessels arrived to extract him, and further that he must hold out with a link to the coast, and may have to abandon his heavy equipment. Mountbaton assured him that he was sure Liberation would compensate him in modern armour from AaN reserves (though he really hadn't the authority to make that assurance).

The few Galdanian ships stil around Dunyabi will begin shelling the city at strategic points, but there are more pressing issues for Galdania right now.
09-10-2003, 20:49
The armored assault on the airbase had suddenly run into a problem.

From the north came a stream of Loyalist motorized infantry and light artillery, charging as the PSF force and blazing away with anti-tank missiles and small arms. As most of the Mullah's armor was concentrated in Gul-Akad, they have very little in the realm of armored support, but the assault did much to distract the PSF from its current objective. The tanks had lost almost a third of their numbes, but still outdid their opponents in firepower by a wide margin and seemed determined to fight to the last man. The tank commander gave his orders: half the force would stand their ground and deal with the diversion, while the other would continue the drive towards the airfield.

As the marines attempted their breakout, the divided PSF troops could do little to stop them. The Loyalist forces kept them well distracted lobbing shells at infantry and avoiding anti-tank fire, and those not engaging the Loyalists had neither the fuel nor the ammunition to continue the chase. The PSF men seized what they could from the airfield, scavenging what had not been destroyed for themselves. Radio transmissions informed international forces that the airfield was not theirs and supply drops from friendly governments and organizations could commence.

Having recieved the Lieutenants transmission, the Mullah was sure he could keep up the fight long enough to get his troops out, though his apprehension at giving up his capital city was great. What armor remained in Gul-Akad gave the rebels a fierce pounding, prompting counter attacks with mortars and RPGs that took their tole on the Loyalist defenders.

At last, the PSF had what they came here for. With the abandonment of the airfield, Gul-Akad was surrounded and only a marine extraction could save its garrison.

The retreat from the airfield was as orderly as possible under the circumstances. About 120 able marines manned a series of defences- a few mortar pits on the very edge of the strip itself, walking a wall of fire around a perimiter to ward off infantry while just behind that 'wall' marines made use of almost every anti-tank weapon dropped to them (mostly M-72 LAW), firing at a frantic rate which would deplete their ammunition stocks quickly- it didn't matter much, as they did not plan to stick around anyway.

The eight Typhoons were long gone, restationing in the north. The ISAN (Incorporated States of Andaman and Nicobar) tanks were all disabled by now. of some 1,200 marines who landed early in the war, 724 were well enough to evacuate, while 48 badly wounded men were left on stretchers along the airstrip. Those 48, plus the 3 downed flyers accounted for rought half the captured. Around 370 dead. A terrible monument to Liberation's underestimation of the communists' determination and strength.

Less than five hundred of those fleeing north were in fighting condition, and much of their equipment had to be left. Many M60 machineguns, several 60mm mortars, a few 76mm guns, and some Stinger SAM units. Ammo by the case. As many of the weapons as there was time to consider were disabled, often by taking the firing pin, and many pieces of equipment were hurridly booby-trapped. The last 120 marines left suddenly in a sprint.

Meanwhile the relief fleet was cutting through the Arabian Sea. Fighter cover continued to fly out of friendly bases on mainland India, and seaplanes hunted for ships and subs than might block the advance of two Wasp assault ships, four hurridly converted civilian ships (two merchantmen and two cruiseliners), and their considerable cutter, frigate, and destroyer escort.

Having escaped north towards the loyalist-held oil fields young Lt.Mountbaton was doing his best to make sure of the safe withdrawl of the loyalist force which has provided the diversion. He demanded Liberation's occasional air-strikes (with B-1B and B-2 bombers) be directed in such a way as to cover the loyalist withdrawl.

Withdrawl might not be what the Mullah's northern army wanted, but Mountbaton was doing his level best to convince them to be patient.

"Why walk to Gul-Akad to-day when you can ride there on a tank to-morrow?" He asked.

On the horizon tiny specs of hope gradually were growing-up, becoming shortly the ISAN relief flotilla.

Helicopters from the assault ships and escorts already were flying over the coast, hunting for hostile vessels, surveying the scene on land, and bringing in officers to meet with Mountbaton and the loyalist commanders.

Soon, large Seaknight helicopters were flying in more light artillery and supplies to boost the defences. In coming hours LCAC would begin to glide ashore, bringing more men, equipment, and armour. The number of tanks was reduced somewhat by the presence of heavy machinery brought in to build earthwork defences, and more importantly to make sure of good, large landing strips deep in loyalist territory..

It would be the next day at before the fleet could even consider moving south for the Mullah's forces.
