Unleash the Dragon

<Restricted Area Gamma-9, McLeod03>

The small StealthHawk UCAV swept out to the western side of the restricted airspace, its body contorting itself in order to turn, using active surfaces rather than ailerons to turn and elevators to change angle of attack.

Its radar sought out its target, then found it. Exactly 67 miles away was a modified 747 passenger aircraft, flying due north. It achieved radar lock, then transmitted its findings back to the 'pilot', Patrick Elliot.

<Dreamland Secret Base, McLeod03>

Elliot saw the light next to the LOCK tag turn on, and picked up the headset in front of him. "Time to party" he said, to no one in particular.

As soon as the headset was on, its recievers detected Elliot's neural inputs, and he began to fly the UCAV directly. The technology was brand new, and highly-experimental. Te 747 was controlled by another member of Elliot's test center unit, known as the Dreamlanders, using the same modified technology.

For the purposes of the mission, the 747 was carrying the entire Royal Family, and heads of state of many other nations, all on their way to a summit being held in McLeodia.

Elliot concentrated, forcing the StealthHawk to speed up, before adopting a position behind the 747, ready for a missiles launch. At 55 miles, he recieved a missile lock signal, and committed both MAMRAAM missiles to launch.

Beneath the UCAV, two bomb bay doors opened, and the missiles dropped into the slip-stream before igniting and streaking off towards the target.

<Onboard the Al-52 Dragon "Lucky Lady">

'deedledeedledeedle missile launch, missile launch' filled the cabin as the ultar-sensitive LADAR and MMR arrays on the body of the modified B-52 detected the launch of both missiles from over 140 miles east of the 747.

Bradley Masters turned back to his console, and used the radar arrays to lock the forward camera onto the front most missile. Below and in front of him, he heard a grinding noise as gears turned the large forward turret into position.

"Launch commit Dragon, target 3" he said to the computer. He heard a rumbling starting from near the rear-most bomb bay, and it suddenly rushed past him, then was gone.

There was no noise beynd that low rumbling, no flash of red or green light, nothing to tell that the largest laser built in McLeod03 was firing. Its targetting arrays and focusing mirrors reflected the beam, narrowed it, focused it, and aimed it with enough precision to be able to focus on individual parts of an aircraft frame.

140 miles away, the first missile disintegrated. Seconds later, the second missile followed.

"Test complete" Masters said, "all units stand down." Then to himself he muttered "Thats a real quiet way to spend $100,000"

$100,000 - thats pretty cheap...what exactly is the $100,000 for....the maintenance per 2 shots or the missiles?

Maintenance per two shots. Not the missiles.

k...in that case its not that bad...sounds like a piece of tech i wouldnt half mind getting my hands on...

Well its more than $1,000,000,000 per AL-52, and NOT for sale.

Well i try. No, seriously its really cool tech. Especially since the next level is to try fitting it to larger aicraft. (Thinks of entire B-1 ground attack with escorts, AWACS and re-fuelling all flown from the ground hundreds of miles away)

A Transdynamics Consortium representative, also a Colonel in the Federation Aerospace Forces, at the ground monitoring station congratulated the McLeodian team on their accomplishment.

Colonel David Wright, brother of Secretary-General Ian Wright, then turned to the McLeodian general overseeing the activities. "General, Transdynamics is very pleased to see how far along your nation is progressing. We believe that the lifting-body bomber under development on Titan right now could be an ideal platform for this system. What do you think?"

If you meant the laser:

Certainly, lifting body technology would be an advancement from the B-52 airframe currently used, but the systems is very sensitive and custom built for a B-52. Modifications would be extremely expensive.

If you meant ANTARES/active surfaces:

Certainly lifting body technology coupled with this technology would be a wise step indeed, and would allow for greater payloads, speeds, and manouevres.

OOC: Very cool pic

IC: If you fell that the ANTARES system could be linked up to this bomber, we would happily lend you both hte technology, and the engineers to make this feat possible. In return, we ask for production rights to the finished bomber.

OOC: It's amazing what you can find when you look for concept designs that were never built. =)

IC: From our own research into sapient AI development and neural computing, we believe that an ANTARES linkup is entirely possible for the bomber. While we could build our own system from the ground up... we don't see any point in reinventing the wheel if you already have a system that works. In return for ANTARES technology, Transdynamics Consortium is willing to provide McLeod one full squadron of the new bombers. The Federation will also provide two Earth-Titan transport vehicles, preferential rates on liquefied gases refined from Saturn, and civilian spaceport access in the Commonwealth.

Other than the introduction of BERP, it sucked. I really wanna bring BERP out into NS, but it'll just be called godmodding, so unfortunately no Tin Men for Mcleod03.

Transdynamics Consortium, in its classified annual report to the governments of McLeod and FACS, reports that the Advanced Lifting-Body Bomber development is underway as planned. 'Virtual' flight tests with a training ANTARES unit and the planned test pilots have been stellar thus far... given that the YB-9 is the first bomber-type airframe designed specifically to incorporate neural controls. The 'Dragon' Mk II airborne laser program is also progressing as planned, if somewhat slowly because of the inability to test the laser in Titan's thick, hydrocarbon atmosphere. Verification tests are being conducted in special pressurized air chambers at low power.

Even so, its not all that future tech. Not as much as a forward swept wing Mach 4 fighter.
