test flight: new propulsion system (space)

14-09-2003, 16:36
The new ship is docked at the colony's spaceport. The test pilot Shubashi is preparing for the last check.
"This is Station 17, mission control. The countdown is at t-5 min, please begin with the final check."
"This is Solar 1, test pilot Shubashi, beginning final check.
Life support, check
batteries, check
conventional propulsion systems, check
fuel, check
unfolding device, check
navigational systems, check
standby systems, check
Final check complete, mission control"
"This is Station 17, mission control, report the status of your crew"
"Crew complete and ready" Shubashi smiles. He is the whole crew.
"We're now at t-120, cutting all supply lines off, opening docking clamps, all connections to the station are cut"
The remaining air in the airlocks pushes the ship gently away from the dock.
"You have the clearance for take off, Solar 1. Good luck!"
"Confirmend mission control. I'm now activating the engines. Estimated time to reach the security perimeter: 80 seconds"
"Mission control, I have reached the the security perimeter. I'm now activating the unfolding device."
Shubashi pushes the button. The sheets open behind the cockpit and through his window he can see how several rods come out and extend quick into the vastness of space. Then slowly a golden foil moves along the rods. The engineers told him it would take about an hour until the sail would reach its full size.
He sits back. Now there would be plenty of time for him. His mission is to fly from the station to mars which is currently only 40.000.000km away. There he would enter a lower orbit, fly several rounds around mars and then return. The mission time is almost 3 months and he is alone.
Shubashi opens his first book. Since he is traveling alone, they allowed him to take 80kg of personal belongings with him. They even alowed him real food and small quantities of alcohol and caffeine. They did their best to ensure that he won't become crazy on this trip.
While reading his book, Shubashi doesn't notice how the ship and the unfolding sail are more and more affected by the photons and rays of the sun which are now taking the ship to mars.

OOC:
This kind of propulsion is going to be used in most of my future ships designs.

So...what is the point of this new ship? :?

it is faster than my current technology and it is cheaper than anything I have seen here
