Nuclear Orbital attack aftermath.

We have the numbers for casualties in the recent attack (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=70110&highlight=)(read the whole thread, please) against a DarkSithian Battlecruiser in Earth orbit by a submarine belonging to the nation of Seversky. At least ten nuclear missiles were detected too late for the ship to take any evasive manouver and impacted against it. Fortunately, the ship's shields were active, taking the brunt of the attack. Nonetheless, the ship was heavily damaged and, even though it came back on her own power, will go to Tersanctus' Shipyards (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46137&highlight=) for a replacement of the FTL drive. Crew casualties are high, with 3417 deaths and 2204 injured. Over fifty percent of the 12000 crewmen have been exposed to varying degrees of radiation, which leads to the conclusion that the casualty list will grow in months, may be years, to come.

As a result of the orbital nuclear explosion, a significant number of satellites, belonging to thousands of nations, private corporations and scientific foundations have been destroyed or damaged, either by the shock wave or the ElectroMagnetic Pulse. Also, high speed particles, result of the nuclear blast , have been raining over the planet.

It is expected that nations will come to Seversky's door to request the corresponding reparations.

The only comment from the Emperor has been: "My empire won't go to war over a mouse. Even if attacked with nuclear weapons."

In a more amusing note, the cause of this attack, Moistee the mouse, is quite well, and it seems to have found the mate the Emperor brought to its liking, as the happy couple are still... attached to each other and with no signs of exhaustion. We wonder what kind of telemetry will be receiving the nation of SmartSpace.

When the missiles impacted, the men BUMPed all over the ship. Even the Admiral.

Right now, the deads list from the attack has raised to 3912. Also, previously reported as able crewmen have developed cases of cancer due to the radiation exposure. The radioactive rain didn't reach DarkSith and the prevailing winds seem to send any particle towards other nations.

OOC:

1: No shockwave in the vacuum of space.
2: Radiation (both EM and particle) decreases by the square of the distance. Even if in LEO (Low Earth Orbit), the devices would be 200+ miles away.
3: EMP effects are only prevalent in space detonations that take place in one of the two van-allen belts, radiation belts. Was your ship sitting inside a belt of particle radiation? (who parks in a place like that anyway?)
4: NS Earth is HUGE. There are a lot of nations with satelites, but a lot of space for those satelites. While it is possible (but unlikely) thousands of satelites were destroyed, it is unlikely that more then a few from any one nation or corporation were.

It would not be in everyone's interest to go to war over this, though perhaps take other actions. Then again, perhaps the nuclear attack was deserved, we can't know without reading the thread...and don't expect everyone to read it.

(OOC:

I am:

1) giving nations the chance to grab some cash from this incident, specially the younger, but space-capable, ones.

2) trying to show that Diplomacy is better RP than War, (and so far failing miserably)

3) NOT going to war over a mouse. Just the 4000 deaths is too much.

Of course where there is no air, there is no air-displacement shockwave, but there is indeed a shockwave.

Low speed particles you are right, but that doesn't apply to the high speed (v=c) ones.

AFAIK LEO=under van allen=EMP=ouch. I might be wrong. It has happened before. I think. Sometime. :)

As for the size of NS Earth, you are right. But with, say, 500 sats per nation, that is a lot of sats in different orbits and of different purposes. Several thousands of satellites affected (not destroyed, but affected) isn't that impossible. I agree that really destroyed satellites would be very few. Tens, may be.

Back to IC:)

Again, DarkSith states that will not ask for reparations, even though we recommend any affected nation to do so. We advise against going to war, even admitting that the usage of nuclear devices in Earth orbit is a reckless tactic that should be met with the general repulse of all nations.
