Results of general election in; Free Trade government falls

Last Tuesday signaled the end of six years of Parliamentary leadership by the Free Trade Party of Iansisle as it lost nearly one hundred and fifty seats in the Commonwealth Combined Parliament. The Ruling Coalition, formerly under the guidance of Free Trade and now headlined by the Commonwealth Party, also lost the majority but retained a plurality by ninety seven votes over the resurgent Liberty Coalition.

The Commonwealth Party, as the largest member of the ruling coalition, now has to elect a Prime Minister to replace Edward Tarriff. Sir Hubert L. Pith-Mycroft, a businessman from the western Shield, and Hiresh*Dhawan, the son of a Gallagan nobleman educated at Royal Standard University, have emerged as the leading candidates. Former Prime Minister Edward Tarriff, now an un-ranked M.P. for central Gadsan, refused to endorse either candidate, despite rumors of a lucrative position in the Ministry of Education should he support Pith-Mycroft.

Elections within the Commonwealth Party will take place next week, despite concerns that with the delay may be untimely, given the war in Europe and Chaing Mai / Hainan saber rattling in the South China Sea. Government officials have assured the populace that the Ministries will be able to handle any crisis in the meantime.

The Results:

('Free Trade' is just the name of the party, and their coalition is still in power. There shouldn't be any tariffs at all. Now, if the Leftist Opposition Coalition gets into power, I'd watch out :))

"Oh! Oh dea..r..congratulations!" the PM fumbled, surprised to see Tarriff gone, though many observers in lower government and civil service were not so taken aback. If anything, this was perhaps good for the war effort. We've nothing to loose by a stronger Iansisle, if that is indeed what we end up with.

The King of Calarca sits back and thinks hard as the morning political briefer left the room.

...So Tarriff is gone now, hmm... Sir Hardcastle was of the opinion he was well meaning but a bumbling duffer, if not so bad as to be called a fool, I wonder who we will be dealing with now.
I must get the minister of overseas affairs and the minister of enspionage to draw up a report on the other contenders in the running for the PMs seat.
I wonder why the royalists did so poorly...

Sir Hubert L. Pith-Mycroft

A wealth businessman from the Western Shield, where he spent much time in the family business raising cattle, he started Mycroft Motors, which was bought out by Westerton Motor-cars four years ago.

Pith-Mycroft is soft spoken and deliberate in person, but passionate and stirring in front of crowd. In past years, he has been a strong presence on the floor when Tarriff faltered. Almost attended the Golden Agate Conference in Larkinia, but was scratched at the last moment by Grand Admiral Sir Richard Tri.

He was one of the many MPs who came out in strong support of the King's war on Germany. A moderate politically, he was also one of the biggest advocates for a domestic space agency.

(up next: Hiresh*Dhawan!)

(Of course, his support for space programmes has hurt his credability in the eyes of many right-thinking Walmingtonians ;) but we can't possibly have a..Gallagan..think of the chaos in Ceyloba! [shudder!])

Hiresh*Dhawan

Born son and heir to the throne of Hireshia, in the Mouths of the Ganges, Hiresh Dhawan turned his back on the small princely state and Gallaga as a whole. He left for the Commonwealth when he was sixteen, paying for passage by selling some of his father's rare books.

After working to save up money for a time at a Royal Mining and Manufacturing warehouse, Dhawan entered Royal Standard University, graduating in four years with a political science degree. He entered the Iansislean political scene at once, quickly winning a seat in Parliament from a liberal area of the eastern Shield.

Dhawan is also a moderate, and, although not as eloquent as Sir Hubert in person, his oratory skills are ranked among the best in the Commonwealth. Many theorize that he could be the first person since Sir Jeffery Williams to really control the C.C.P.. Dhawan - although he has not been back to Gallaga since leaving - supports granting all Company holdings and Crown Colonies Dominion status, though he believes the integrity of the Commonwealth must be maintained at all costs.

OOC:

Try the son of a prostistute and unknown father, pulled himself up by means of brains and scholourships, and a bit of subtle blackmail of Principals and Head boys, to where he was involved with Student politcs and then national politics, where his blackmailing habits would be useful...

I'd rather have a dirty rascal who can scheme around the enemy's plans and bring them crashing down than a moral upright who just gets steamrollered over the first time a enemy breaks his solemn word, through that type wouldn't last this long in politics.

A rich Native doesn't do it for me, the car dealer would be my bet. but is he dirty enough to outhink political rivals? he's also fairly boring.

(Iansislean politics tend to be fairly forgiving, as you can make MP with only 300,000 votes out of a population of 600,000,000. (oh, and yes, every single member of the Commonwealth is enfranchised, even newlyborns) That's why the Neo-Royalist and Iansislean Communist Parties are still hanging in there.

Also, the Commonwealth Party tends to be a 'goodie-goodie' bunch, with Free Trade being the bumblers, and the Rightests the nefarious ones. (especially the Royalists) I think they're about equal in scheming ability - and floor presence in the C.C.P. is vital - 2,000 members, and the splits even worse than it used to be.

Just some extra info; I'm not bemoaning your choice. I honestly don't know which I want ;))

Suits me, I would rather have had a striaght line across Gallaga rather than the northward bulge, and a strip of unclaimed native land as a buffer zone between me and others on the mainland. Plus all the Islands east of borneo mine, just not PNG itself.

WoS has bits of Africa too.

Seems good tho. wait and see what WoS says about his missing African conquests, lol.

(Well, until everyone else gets their two cents in, at least ;)

I've been thinking - this weekend, when Chaing Mai declares war, it might be kind of fun if he went south, into Malaysia, as well as east and west. We could have a desperate naval battle to try and keep Fort Trade / Fort Manly resupplied as he surrounded them and tried to lay siege.

Just some ideas I've had bouncing around my head.)

Yah, Walmington's African colonies are off the map :)

What thread did I record them in? Maybe it was the news archive. Erm, they are, as it says there, all open to contention, but I penciled in most of Mauritania (big, yes, but ..empty), Togo, Sao Tome & Principe, Zimbabwe, more or less the south/east coastal strip of South Africa (including probably Lesotho and Swaziland) and possssibly Madagascar, though I'm not sure if I've heard someone else mention a vague claim to that, so I'm none too fussed- it is a big island and we can share..or I can get off and take a bit of Mozambique or something. I'm thinking at some point we tried a colonial adventure in the Americas, too, but I see it being a bit of a Scottish affair (their central American colony failed horribly and bankrupt them).

Probably that would have been in Walmington's early history (C16th), and would have explained why we took our time about becoming a power, and missed out on a lot of Asia.
12-09-2003, 08:39
So lethoso/Swaziland would be where my Cruisers docked and refueled after the trip over from Gallaga?
Walmington on Sea
12-09-2003, 09:00
Well, they're just in-land, but presumably at South Africa very close to them, aye. We have nothing else until Sao Tome & Principe, then Mauritania after that. Then you're on to the home islands.
