It was night in the Gurguvii harbor at Viir. The great ships were moored to their docks, gun ports closed. The ships were manned by a skeleton crew, their commanders were at home, their crews asleep. Marines maintained a lax vigil on the larger ships. Most of them forced each other to stay awake. All was quiet save one man. He was a saboteur of the Friendly Neigborhood of Loondbog. In his hand he held a burning slow match. He crept along the lower gun deck, past the iron behemoths of guns and into the armory. He swept the curtain aside and snuck in among the great barrels of powder. He stuck the slow match into a large barrel and turned quickly, jumping over the side. In his haste to get away, his sabre caught among the ropes of one of the guns, and fell to the ground. The saboteur cursed foully, the sabres of Loondbogii saboteurs bore a distinctive mark of Loondbog's flag. There was, however, nothing to be done about it. He fell into the water with a splash and swam quickly away from the doomed ship. Five minutes later, he hauled himself into a small rowboat and sat watching. The explosion ripped the night apart. Fire shot up into the sky in a huge and vicious gout of heat and death. Then came the sound. It rolled over him like a thousand deamons. When the fire died andthe smoke cleared, there was nothing left but a blackened hulk slowly settling in the turbid waters of Viir harbor.

[OOC: Excellent... aw crap... an older wargame. Oh well... no banana bombs I see...]

IC: At around this time, Wormia was known only as the Holy Empire of Anledia. Flying her flag high into the air, Aledian ships raise their sails and prepare their ships-of-the-line for a government/military venture into deep ocean, for purposes solely of exploration. And perhaps a little bit of conversion into the past state religion of Meekomorphism.

Wormian cruisers of the era were:

10-gun corvettes
30-gun destroyers
40-gun frigates
80-gun cruisers
90-gun ships-of-the-line
Fireships (not flaming ships, they use Greek Fire)
Ramships (similar to triremes)

The saboteur rushes through the forested banks of Gurguvungunit. The color of his shoes no longer show through the mud splattered and stained on their leather sides. He comes to a boat tied to a tree on the north end, quickly unties it, and pushes it out into the water. Before he gets in, he looks back. The smoke from the explosion lingers in the air. He know the Gurguvii would begin their search immediately. He needed to get back fast, otherwise people will spot his silhouette against the moonlight. He paddles out across the straight, coming back to his home country.

EDIT: I changed something to make the story go along a little better. You'll see what's coming up.

Captain Lord Charles Pushney kicked at the charred wood of what was once the GMS Imperial. The ship was secured to buoys and inflated animal bladders to keep it afloat. Pushney watched the investigators of the Lords Commissioners of the Navy as they poked through the gutted remains of what would have been his ship. One of the investigators held a twisted piece of metal, banged and smashed out of shape. Pushney stalked over to the man and snatched the metal from him. "It's a sword," He said quietly. Pushney examined the twisted thing and discerned a suggestion of a hilt in the end he held. There was a symbol too. Pushney looked closeley at it. Even twisted and smashed, the symbol was clear. A popsicle and a bomb. Loondbogii Corps of Saboteures.
OOC: I've known Pushney for like, 5 minutes and I already hate him...

Anledian flags flying high, the ships sailed into Gurguvii harbor, at Viir. Taking into account the lack of light speed communications we have today, they hadn't a clue that the Gurguvungunian warship Imperial had almost met death.

Captain Philip Hardman the first flicked his wrist to extend the brass maritime telescope that he had kept since his days as a midshipman.

Peering through it, he viewed the majesty of the Imperial. Or, former majesty, its crispened blackened hulk had been tied to floats of all kinds to keep her up, and it was not long before Hardman could see that the Gurguvungunian navy was prepping for war.

Bad time to arrive... He thought.

General Corry, leader of the Loondbog Saboteurs, sat at his desk. He had recently found out information that a saboteur by the name of Ganit had been reported missing. Corry knew that that the numbers of the Saboteurs had been diminishing, but losing Ganit was hard. Even though Ganit was sort of smarmy in a way, he was a great saboteur.

Corry got up to look out the window. Across the straight he noticed the GMS Imperial's sails that he normally saw were no longer there. Corry asked his assistant what "Where is the ship?"

The assistant replied, "It has been attacked upon."

OOC:Uhh Uh-huh.. Yeah.
IC: Captain Gregory Barcman of the 32 gun ship Majesty took a puff on his cigar and watched the flag of his ship flap in the light breeze. He looked about and smiled in the sun of the Loondboggii Harbor. The loud bustling of a gasping Midshipman startled him from his reverie. "Sir, Sir!" THe young man gasped. "News from Fleet Headquarters sir. Just came in off the semaphore from Giant's Head Rock. It's orders sir." Barcman smiled at the young man indulgently and took the profferred(sp) paper. He opened it and read.
By Decree of The Lords Commissioners,
You are requested and required to leave the territory of Loondbog with all haste.
That's odd, He thought. It is unlike the Lords to order a ship out of port like that. Something must be happening. He stood. "Mr. Quigley," He said. "Bring the senior officers to the wardroom. I shall meet them there. But first, tell First Lieutenant Barnum to make all sale for Viir Harbor."
"Aye aye, Sir!"

The Anledian vessels open their sails and place themselves in the straight, between the Loondboggii harbor and Viir harbor at Gurguvungunit.

The ships are prepared for hostility from either side, and are awaiting further orders from the Anledian Naval High Command.

King Fredrick IV of Gurguvungunit stands before the House of Lords and the Lords Commissioners of the Navy Board.
"Three days ago, The Constitutional Monarchy of Gurguvungunit was summarily and brutally attacked by the Neighborhood of Loondbog. One of our great ships, the pride of our navy, was destroyed in a cowardly assault upon our soil, in which a saboteur caused its explosion. This is an insult we cannot endure. I call upon you, my lords, to ready the fleets and mobilise the army. They will pay for the tears shed by mothers of dead sons, for the blood of young men, for the shattered futures of widowed wives. They will pay."
The lords packing the hall rose in standing ovation as the King departed the speaker's podium.
Lord Deptford, the foreign minister, signed the decleration of war to Loondbog.
As of that morning, the two nations were at war.

General Corry sits at his desk confused. Gurguvungunit moving their ships out of Loondbog's waters... The Imperial attacked... his saboteur missing.... There must be something tieing these things together.

Corry writes onto a peice of paper to Lord Deptford:
My deepest sympathies to the destruction of your ship.
I've noticed as few things going on about here.. Why are your ships leaving our waters?
Please reply as fast as you can, I've a few things to sort out.
-Captain Corry, of the Loondbog saboteurs.
Corry stamped the document with the official seal, and gave the message to his messenger.
"Deliver this as fast as you can."

Lord Deptford scanned the message from the Loondbogian General. He took a piece of parchment and dipped his quill in ink.

General. You have the gall to destroy one of our ships and kill our men, and then to apologise? We are at war. Prepare to defend yourself honourably.
Deptford
He sealed it with the stamp of Gurguvungunit and handed it to an assistant waiting nearby.
"Send it to Loondbog."

Thoughts are racing through General Corry's mind. What to do... what to do...

"You better stop pacing or else you'll wear a hole in the floor," Corry's assistant says.

Corry sits down, sighs, and says, "Get me Luke, leader of the Loondbog Navy, and bring him here as soon as possible."

"I'm on it."

Four tradeships of Loondbog and two smaller sloops cruised in a line across the Veritas Straight between Gurguvungunit and Loondbog. Their sails were full and the wind blew them toward the open ocean to the east. Captain Barcman snapped his telescope shut and shouted to his crew.
"Beat to Quarters! Clear for action and set battle sails!" His crew shortened sail and opened the gunports with customary efficiency. Barcman smiled. The distance was closing with the convoy and the escort sloops were breaking to engage him. Through his glass he could see their names, Swift and Battle Dog. The ships closed to battle, ready and near evenly matched, with the Majesty boasting 32 guns, and the two sloops having 28 guns between them.
OOC: Who wins this one. We can each take turns rping the battles out by deciding who wins the fight first. yay. 8)
