The christian nationalist party, or CNP, has announced its decision to oppose militarily the rule of Sultan Muhmad Al-Kurdi and the ITP, or islamic tolerant party. The two parties are at opposite poles of political ideals, the CNP being at the far right-wing, and the ITP left-leaning, and slowly but steadily moving to the middle-left, especially with a good deal of its members delcaring themselves athiests and the Sultan's decision to release all political prisoners and heretics, as well as legalise cloning, abortion, homosexuality, and free and unrestricted internet usage. The military is split, with about 55% going over to the christian side and the rest remaining loyal to the sultan. Most of the airforce and navy has stayed loyal to the sultan, and most of the mechanised elements of the army have stayed loyal. The infantry, however, is almost completlety gone, as well as the marines and a good part of naval aviation, although the christians are not armed with the newer MiG-29Ks but with the MiG-21Ks. A good 50% of the population is behind the CNP or the extremist islamic groups that have allied themselves with the CNP to defeat the ITP.

An ITP howitzer firing on rebel positions in the mountains. Although the militias are highly motivated and dedicated troops, they are far outclassed in terms of training and equipment by the rebels. The army is spread too thin to supply anything more than logistical support to the militias, but the airforce is flying round-the-clock in support of the militias.
