Background: The Democratic Republic of Nimbata was until 4 years ago a communist state under a stalinist, ruthless dictator. Recent plans for reforming the armed forces, introducing foreign corporations and privatising infratructure have all been met with resistance from a proportion of the populace particulaly in the Northern Provinces.

Now:

Nimbatan State Broadcasting Service

"...following the mass desertions of troops in Kachin province several days ago, we now have reports that provincial government buildings have been stormed and mass shooting has been heard in several towns and cities, the rebel leader who we know only as the 'Red Tiger' says he will give a live statement any minute now. The government in Rangoon has yet to make any comment but sources suggest that international assistance is being sought to quell this rebellion...we now go live to a press confeence from the 'Red Tiger':

"Citizens of Nimbata, today has marked the begining of the end of this disastrous and corrupt government who's only aim is to line their own pockets with the riches of our nation. Our nation must rise up and remove the cancer of capitalism from our lands. The people must not be misled, manipulated and robbed by international companies who see our great country as only a source of money to be plundered and raped. Today has marked the liberation of Kachin State and soon the people's army will bring the great day of liberation to the whole nation. We are assured that our communist comrades all over the world will spare no effort in aiding our struggle, Nimbatans there will be a price, but I am confident our great people will be prepared to pay it."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Official Statement:

The Democratcially elected government of Nimbata, requests assistance from the international community. A minority of our citizens are mounting a rebellion against the reforms that are so neccesary to make Nimbata a viable nation with a free market economy and an asset to the world. These guerillas are fanatical and dangerous but should this threat be tackled with great force and with great haste, this problem will quickly
be resolved.

OOC: Feel free to take either side, this might be a long drawn out RP so beware, herre is a map of Nimbata:

The Sultanate of Kahtan has a long and distinguished history of intervening to protect democratic or royalist regimes from guerillas such as the ones who have rebelled in Nimbata.

Before comitting troops or any other support we are sending some 30 senior officials including military officers amd diplomats to inspect and review the situation.

A 727 aircraft will arrive in Rangoon tommorrow.

Ministry of State.

The Government of Nimbata eagerly awaits the Kahtani inspection team and we hpe your nation will assist us as you have others.
Dra-pol
09-08-2003, 02:12
Dra-pol would love to aid the communists (or the Stalinists, if they're still knocking about), though what we can do would be limited by several facts.

Firstly, we've only just opened up to the world, after fifty years of isolation, secondly, technology hasn't moved much since, and we still use largely WWII Japanese armaments- an AK47 would seem quite the wonder-weapon to our infantry, thirdly the economy is awful, and fourth we're all the way up in North Korea, with no real means of locomotion.

Still, our wandering diplomats, attempting to contact far left regimes, will certainly try to make contacts in Nimbata, and smuggling of small arms and munitions will be arranged, if it is wanted.

(Bolt action rifles, pistols (automatic and revolvers), hand grenades, mines, 'knee-mortars', light machine-guns, and (crappy) sub machine guns will be available to the communists in some quantity. Our people will also be willing to provide training, and demonstrate the many easily constructed traps which litter Dra-pol (and claimed the lives of several westerners who recently landed)), and could be found in conflicts of this type)

Isla de Penguinata has decided to send aid in light of recent events. We will provide the government of Nimbata with 1,000 Stinger Missile Launchers and stinger missiles. (These platforms are carried by personnel.) We will also provide the Nimbatan government with 100 T-90 tanks.

We wish you the best of luck, and to ensure your victory, we are wiring $500 million to you. We will not be performing any combat operations, but we hope the supplies and money will do you good. :D

Artitsa would like to help the Democractic side. As we are a fledgling nation, we can only support one destroyer and one frigate, both have Sparrow Light Heliocoptors. I will also send along 100 Special Operations soldiers. I will see if I can effect anything.

The Commonwealth of Hanshin refuses to intervene militarily in this civil war. We declare our neutrality on this issue and will not tolerate any encroachment by the Democratic Republic of Nimbata or her rebel forces. However, we are not heartless and will supply either side with medical and humanitarian supplies if requested. I, Garin Sota, the Minister of Health, will abide by this promise.

While nearly all of the Kachin state has fallen to the NLA (Nimbata Liberation Army) fighting continues in the most Northern city of Putao, some 4,000 troops are defending the city's administration buidlings but without assistance they will soon be overun.

Following a massive mobilisation of forces from the South including haevy armor and aircraft it has been possible to slow the the insurgence of communist fighters in the South but the jungle areas around the city Kahta are quickly being inflitrated.

OOC: Obviously I am a puppet of Nimbata for the Nimbata Liberation Army.

IC:

The 126th Artillery Regiment that had only deserted from government control a matter of days ago was preparing to unleash hell on the city of Kahta.

Their sixty seven aged but potent China Type 66 152mm howitzers were lined up in a large rice field some fourteen kilometres south of the city center. Troops from the 22nd, 37th and 78th Rifle regiments (12,000 troops in a regiment) combined with 80 T-55 tanks from the 17th Armoured Regiment were a few miles further South ready to pounce on the city while under the cover of the artiery barage. The word finnally came through on the radios and the colonel nodded. a flare was fired and th signal was given.

Nearly simultaneosly every gun already loaded and primed ejected its round sending the shells siling indiscrminatley towards the city. Most were high explosive, some were napalm but allwould do huge damage as many of the buldings were wooden and the narrow alleys would spread fire frighteningly quickly.

Upon hearing the shelling of Katha, the 3rd AW diverted its A-10s along with any availiable A-4 and A-7 of Delta and is now enroute to bomb NLA positions outside the city. The 4th Scout Ranger Division will continue to be dropped to Kahta on the northside. More troops to assist will most likely be needed. Until then support from the air and Bravo Fleet ships cruise missles will have to provide the pressure until reinforcements come. The 14th and 16th Infantry Division , 6th Scout Ranger Division, 8th Army Aviation Division and 9th Armored Division have been called up to also assist in the war.

30 miles south west of Sittwe
The men sat waiting in the bushes, waiting for the right time to attack.
It was obvious large amounts of men were passing by.
They were largely outnumbered, 22 Irkutsk Platoons trapped within half a mile. The men had been airlifted in during 3 in the morning, by chinooks. It was awful waiting in the Jungle. They kept swatting flies the size of birds and if they took their shirts off they're guns would stick to their chests. The government had ordered the men to assist the government. A Ka-52 flew overhead. It made an awful noise, the men looked up in some hope it was their's, yet to no avail, the thick canopy shrouded everything except for the smallest rays of light. They sat, breathlessly. A bomb smashed through the canvas of leaves, soldiers scrambled from the bomb as pigeons scramble if they feel they are near danger. Napalm, the bomb was, scorched the earth and everything surrondening it. The soldiers, however safe from the bomb, had just leaped from the frying pan into the fire. They were surronded by communist supporting rebels. There must have been 2000 rebels armed with Ak-74s right there in comparison to the 880 Irkutsks. One fatal move was all it took to set of a firefight. Many Irkutsks are stubborn and pigheaded. That can be good or bad depending on the situation. So you can image what happened when the rebels ordered the men to set down their firearms. You can't? All right here goes. Nobody cares who shot off the first shot here, it's who fired off the last. 110 men armed with flamethrowers made crisp out of the trees and rebels, backed by 440 of the common infantry soldier, 110 machine guns and 110 shotguns. Only a few hundred rebels could get shots on the men, yet still many were lethal. 7.65 millimeter bullet cases littered the earth, dropped by men who's only care was to survive. An Su-37 flew overhead, a flamethrower sent out wild flames, machineguns sent out bullets that sounded like rumbles in the natural quite of the jungle. Bodies fell, men dead. Of all the rebels suffered the worst. Most of their bodies were unrecognizable crisps, or mutalited by bullets. Irkutsks sat, panting, only a few had died, however the psychological factor screwed up a few of the men, but not permenantly. They called in a Med-evac team to escort the men that had been injured in the fight. A man picked up a radio,
"Sir we've found something your not going to believe. . ."

Having arrived at their destination, One would begin patrolling the area, ready to engage any targets with its rockets, while the other delievered its cargo to the ground, and then alternate. Once the team was set down, the choppers returned home. The Soldiers slipped into the jungle unnoticed as far as any of them knew.

In the basement of Putao city hall

The Commander of the 23rd Rifle Regiment, the mayor of the city and several communication specialists were all huddled in the small claustrophobic room bellow the buidling. Shelling could be heard outside and the earth shaked every now and again but they knew the end was near. Cut off completely and surrounded their 7,000 reamaining men outnumbered and exhausted had been under siege for two days. There original strength had been 12,000. But more than 2,000 had deserted or defected, he knew not which. Over a thousand more had been shot and killed in the process of escaping to the hills.

The door opened and a team of men entered, his men, the officer, a sergeant raised his Makarov handgun to his General, "Its over, you will not stop the liberation."
The man motioned to the Mayor who promptly kneeled down on the floor with his hands in the air. The makarov was rammed into the back of his head, and a shot rang out, the gun turned around and another shot rang out killing the general.

In the Jungle 30 miles South West Of Kahta

The 100 or so soldiers were not from infantry regiments that had defected but they were part of the core of the NLA, previously members of Nimbatas famed guerilla fighting force the 'Red Guard', which had been disbandeed by the capitalists. Once numbering 58,000 men it had struck terror into invaders for centuries and now they were going to strike terror into their own countrymen, They had set up a strategic position covering both sides of the old rail line that was key to carrying supplies around the country. A source in Mandalay had tipped them off about this particular train and they were waiting.

Just before dusk, they heard the chugging of an old black steam locomative similar to every other one on the Nimbatanrailway system, but at the very front of the train there were two crossed swords, telling people that it was military and had priority over everything else. The plan was faultless though and the driver quickly saw the tree that had 'fallen' onto the line, the brakes screeched and the train all ten carriages of it slowly came to a halt. There was some shouting and some soldiers climbed out and proceeded to the front to help move the tree.

Two RPGs streaked out of the trees destroying both machine gun nests, one at the front of the first carriage and the other at the very rear of the last carriage. An indiscrimanate volley of machinegun fire erupted and cut down all twenty troops that had disemabrked, while rifle rounds clattered into the trains passenger compartments killing many others that had remained inside. Once satisfied that all were subdued they ran in andassualted the train, shooting or stabbing the survivors, taking a few casulaties on the way nevertheless. They then came to the cargo compartements and they slid open the heavy wooden doors, unloading all the crates as quickly as possible. Sure enough as they had been told there was several hundred brand new Stinger missiles, grenades and LAWs. They carried what they could then la timed satchel charges before once again disapperaing into the ungle under cover of darkness.

Several miles North of Kahta

The assault on the city was slowing as although a proportion of it was ablaze or flattened by the artillery, the A-10s had inflicted serious casualties wiping out nearly all their howitzers and some tanks. The bombardmrnt had not ceased though as the men resorted to using mortars and smoke rounds to cover the advance of around 16,000 soldiers, which was imminent.

An exceptionally large force of unmarked C-130 aircraft set out from Alvar military installations for Kachin province, bypassing government controlled airspace to avoid detection and landing at rebel controlled airbases. The planes bear a wide variety of cargo to aid the rebel forces; 20 mobile SAM batteries, 50 BRDM-2 armored scout cars (http://www.sovietarmy.com/vehicles/brdm-2.html), and 65 BMP amphibious armoured combat vehicles (http://www.sovietarmy.com/vehicles/bmp.html) provided to help make up for the NLA's lack of effective armor while at the same time concealing Alvarezistan's involvement (they're all readily obtainable Soviet surplus fare). Crates full of weapons arrive as well, over 10,000 AK-74s and variants along with a hundred or so each PKMs, RPGs, and light anti-tank guns. Several dozen tons of ammunition are also provided.

Hours later, another drop is made, this time of men instead of material. Revolutionary Guard paratroopers land at an NLA military installation, dressed similar to NLA soldiers but wearing advanced body armor carrying much more advanced weaponry, primarily heavily modified Alvar copies of the much talked about OICW rifle.

Secret communication to Cirdanistan:

Feel free to choose a meeting place outside of general public view. We're curious as to how you knew it was us who were involved, as we've done much to conceal our aid to the NLA forces.

To Alvarezistan: we suggest an isolated spot in our Northwestern mountains[coordinates included];as for knwoign, well one of our Intelligenc eoperatives was able to closely examine an OICW-type weapon use dby an "NLA" soldier, and was barely able to decypher the hastily scratched-out "made in Alvarezistan" inscription on the metal-he came damn near to gettign caught in the process.
10-08-2003, 21:11
OOC: Our soldiers wouldn't be that incompetant, and the place of manufacture is not engraved onto our weapons. Generally speaking, they'd shoot anyone who saw them out in the open to preserve the secrecy of their operations. But whatever.. it wouldn't be known to anyone else as none of the Guardsmen have yet moved outside of NLA controlled areas.
10-08-2003, 21:22
Major Narov glanced anxiously out the window of his helicopter as the aircraft came within sight of the Cirdanistan mountain base. The weather did not seem to be on his side. A relativly mild storm was whipping across the mountain tops, normally not a great cause for concern. But the chopper was flying at rather high altitudes, and was of civilian rather than military make.

He breathed a sigh of relief as the chopper touched down on the base's helipad and stepped out onto the asphalt surface. Now, all there was to do was wait for the Cirdanistan representatives to arrive.
10-08-2003, 21:23

Also today the Nimbatan armed forces has mounted an embargo of neghbouring Tainesia where ship loads of weapons are being offloaded for transfer across the border to the NLA. He breathed a sigh of relief as the chopper touched down on the base's helipad and stepped out onto the asphalt surface. Now, all there was to do was wait for the Cirdanistan representatives to arrive.
Colonel Ilthiriël stepped forwards as the tail rotor slwoed, and shouted over the reamining roar of the chopper:"Our Vice-Praesident of foreign affairs os over here, follow me..."she turned around and led the way to the discrete mountain lodge.

100 UH-60s take off from there base in government controlled area. They head towards the rebels just bombed by the A-10s from Tradewinds. Flying low over the jungle, they find the designated LZ near the enemy. The enemy fires RPGs are the helicopters. One is instantly crippled by a direct hit. The soldiers get out, jumping into a hail of AK-47 fire. Door guneers on other planes fire back as 1200 soldiers unload. They are men of 2nd and 3rd Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Airborne Division. Their mission is to help destroy the enemy. They will soon be reinforced by other battalions. They establish a defensive perimeter, but loose 24 of their men, who are quickly medevaced by Dust-off helicopters. 1 is killed. The soldiers fire their M-16s into the jungle. They call in airstrikes, and 4 B-52s drop LGBs on the enemy. Meanwhile, suspected communist based are attacked by 10 more B-52s, but it apears that the raids cvreated many civilian casualties.

As of this moment it is my solomn duty to inform you that the continuing violence in your nation has forced me to send a combined air and naval force to contain the violence, any attempt to enforce your embargo will be met with a maximum response as well as any nation attempting to support those ships patroling an illegal embargo will be fired upon. Any hostile actions towards the combined force will be met with a similar response.

I have not set my nation on a course of total war with either faction however if the violence is not resolved measures will be taken to ensure that peace happens weather it be through talks or a total effort to remove both powers as a threat to peace.

Upon hearing the capture of the TAF A-10 pilot, the president demands the release of the captured pilot. The government will work with representatives on the relase of the pilot, in which his name is undisclosed at the moment.

Although one of the AFT's personnel is held as a POW, the Armed Forces will continue all operations on assiting the democratic government.

OOC; Bonstock if you sent a 100 blackhawks in that enviroment youd be lucky to have 20 survive. Not just the MANPADs but also chopper are very susceptible to small arms especially when unloading troops.

IC: The Government of Kahtan sincerely request that any captured prisoners on either side should be treated under POW status according to the geneva convention.

In the early hours of the morning a Nimbatan Mi-17 Helicopter attempted to land troops aboard a freighter in the embargo zone, the ship replied with small arms fire forcing the helicopter to leave the area. Following frequent refusals to stop and be boarded the ship was designated hostile. A Houjian class missile boat roughly eighteen miles away fired two C-801 anti-ship missiles, both of which hit and within the hour the ship had sunk completely. The nationality of the vessel is unknown as it was bearing no flag or ensign, in voilation of te rules of the sea. The ship was estimated as fairly small container ship of 20,000-30,000 tons. Let this be a message to all nations that assist the illegal actions of the NLA, the nation of nimbata will respond with any force necccessary to safeguard the republic.

The Royal Kahtani Air Force has launched its first air strike from its newly setup base at Mandalay's main airport. 12 A-4S Skyhawk aircraft carrying cluster bomb munitions attacked infantry position North of kahta, (coincidental name BTW) hopefully killing or injuring many NLA soldiers. Unfortunately one plane is unaccounted for and the wherabouts of the pilot is unknown although it is believe he ejected over rebel controlled territory.

As the assualt on Kahta stalled as airstrikes and heavy casualties take their toll, and reinforcement have to be brought from Putao, the Red guard begin to inflitrate Sagaing division.

50 kilomteres North East of Tamu, Sagaing Division along the Chindwin River

The 200 Red guard guerillas had been making their way down the river for a few days, inflitrating through the dense jungle. Now they set up in the trees to ambush a town along the river banks. This area was home to a tribe that had a history of being anti-communist resistors even in the days of the regime and now was the time to pay for their disloyalty to the cause. Unlike in other parts of Nimbata they were not here to liberate they were hear to massacre.

An advance group of fifty men were now almost in visual range just a few hundred yards through the trees to the bamboo huts. The distinctive crump of mortars firing was heard behind them and a few explosions could be seen the town. there was screaming as women grabbed their children and ran out of the houses while men grabbed their hunting rifles and shotguns. The advance group snipers were in position though and fired their old but deadly accurate Mosin Nagant bolt action rifles with incredible precision and bodies already started littering the area. The assault force then ran through the jungle the last metres into the clearing, and hit the triggers of their AKs and attached grenade launchers. Within minutes half of the town had been slaughtered and the bamboo huts burned...

Royal Kahtani Army forces have arrived in Mandalay and the first step of their opration is going to be to set up outposts on areas of high grounds mostly in the Sagaing division south east of Tamu. The first 12 outposts will consist of small sandbagged bunkers and trenches consisiting of machine gun nests, a helipad for a chopper up to CH-47 size, a radio relay station complete with signals intelligence collection equipment and accomodation for up to 40 troops including a basic medical facility. The aim of these outposts will be to gather intelligence and interdict guerilla infiltration into Southern Nimbata.

The Sultan of kahtan in a speech to the Kahtani people once again illustrated his firm desire to prevent commmunist expansion. So far the majority of the population are in favor of these deployments, but the longer they last the less support they are likely to recieve.

Two blindfolded pilots in flight suits are shown tied to wooden chairs, they are recognisable as the Kahtani A-4 Pilot and the Tradewinds A-10 pilot.
Uniformed NLA soldiers surround them and an officer addresses the camera. "This is not your war, why do you kill our troops? why do you kill our people? why do you kill our women and our children? You have 24hrs to remove all your forces from Nimbata, or these two murderers will face justice for their crimes."

From General Anton Nacht
To the Nimbata Democratic Republic

We in the nation of Gottgegeben have recently thrown off the shackles of Communism, and would hate to see a now free nation fall under its sway. Having recently become aware of this situation, we are more than willing to aid in the prevention of another such regime taking power. We do hereby declare our support to you, and will begin immediate operations if you accept our assistance. Our army is not as massive as many you'll see, but nearly all our soldiers are veterans of our own revolution and quite skilled in guerilla and non-conventional warfare. Recently re-equipped with more modern weaponry, we feel we're ready to return to the world arena. With your acceptance, I will personally arrive in your country through a secretly selected method and we will be at your service in short order.

They understand vengeance hwoever, their petty leaders think they will somehow be un-manned if they do not avenge in blood their pilot's death;if you offer to free the pilots if they promise not to engage any additional troops, you might succeed in preventing them from reinforcing the government,or maybe get them to lift the blockade;if they see the piltos killed they will want to kill more NLA soldiers and also civillians supporting youre cause.

The soldiers in the LZ consolidate their grounds, defending against waves of communist attackers. Though losing 14 more men, who are also Medevaced by Blackhawks, the soldiers patrol the area to scoure for hidden SAMs and AAA which threaten the Blackhawks. it is obvious that they are not deep in enemy territory, as none are found. The soldiers guess that they have been pulled back to more defended areas. However, this mission has provided valuable insight into Communist tactics. Helicopters soon fly in to take the two battalion back to base to prepare for the next mission.

Meanwhile, at their bases, 20 F-16s prepare for a Search and Destroy SEAD mission. They are going to look for enemy SAMs, and destory them with HARM missiles. They will be helped by helicopter borne soldiers who will fly low into enemy territory, at night as to impede small arms fire. A total of 36 special ops soldiers have volenteered for the mission to search out the SAMs.

A small B-52 raid meanwhile carpet bombed an area of the jungle suspected of being an enemy stronghold. No report on the sucees of the raid with 8 of the B-52s and 8 F-16s escorting, though one SAM managed to damage one B-52 into going home. EDIT: Crap. I just saw Nimbata's pause post just now. Ah well.. this will be the last hostile action taken until he gets back and can respond

The Major continued to follow the colonel to the lodging area. Unlike the officers of most armies might, he did not register any surprise at the fact that she was female; the Alvar army allowed women to serve in combat and to rise to senior ranks in the chain of command. He dispensed with the small talk immediatly and began to discuss matters of business with the colonel on the way to the cabin. "Our forces haven't had a great deal of coordination with each other up until now. I don't suppose you could inform me as to exactly how many agents you have in the field?"

Meanwhile, in the jungles of Nimbata..

The ten Alvar soldiers lay on their stomachs in the underbrush along the side of the narrow paved road leading from Shwebo to the besieged city of Kahta, their 40 NLA charges scattered among their ranks. Their camouflage, both on their uniforms and rifles, was close to perfect; few could have detected their prescence in the bush without practically tripping over them, especially since dusk was rapidly approaching. They could hear the rumble of the Nimbatan Army convoy approaching the besieged city bearing valuable supplies; food, ammunition, fuel. A highly valuable target, especially if most of the equipment could be captured intact.

Leading and ending the convoy were a pair of light armored vehicles, the make indeterminate at this range. Between them were a series of old canvas covered supply trucks bearing their precious cargo. The disciplined special forces soldiers waited patiently for the convoy to pass through the platoon of Guardsmen and NLA troops hiding on both sides of the road. Once the lead and rear vehicles had passed in front of the first and last soldiers, they finally sprang into action.

The soldiers at the front and back of the platoon's line were placed where they were for a good reason; The four were equipped with RPG-7 anti tank weapons. As soon as they had a good shot at the rear of the enemy light armor, two of the HEAT rockets streaked towards each of their targets. The twin streaks of fire penetrated the lighter rear armor of their intended targets, disabling them entirely. Then the rest of the troops made their move. The Alvar soldiers fired the 20mm airburst grenades through the windows and into the cabins of their supply trucks, which exploded inside and tore through the bodies of the driver and passenger inside while the NLA troops sprayed away at the hatches of the armored cars to keep Nimbatan soldiers from exiting in one piece.

One thing was clear; none of the enemy troops were to escape alive. Alvar involvement would have been readily apparent based on the weapons the soldiers were using and their role would be exposed to the world community. On the off chance that any of them managed to escape.. well, the Guard sniper in the tall Mangrove tree with the Dragunov would take care of that minor problem.

With any luck, the other eight convoy raids along Nimbata's roadways would go as well as this one seemed to be initially. In itself, this was only a drop in the bucket.. multiplied by eight, it might be a stining blow to the reactionary government's war effort.

Regarding pilot prisoner:

-Transmision to NLA via back channels-

The government of Kahtan will not surrender to any demands made by the NLA as it is the policy of our government not to negotiate with terrorists irrespective of the circumstances. However it is greatly recomended that the NLA return our combatant who is not being treated as such under the Geneva convention. Failure to do so will result in an escalation of the conflict which will not only entail more NLA casualties to arise but will cause further suffering to the citizens of Northern Nimbata. Kahtanis are nice people but we are a proud people and nobody blackmails us.

Well, if that is completely true, it can only home in on really close targets. You would not see them coming. SAMs sites always have radar in use, even if the missiles are heat-seeking. Otherwise once a target is aquired its gone...

So my HARMs are going after the controlling radars, not the launchers. I could also send in some LGBs if that does not work.

err....bonstock....i don't think you've realised we're talking about a handheld SAM here....yes it is limited to visula range, but that's suffficent to shoot down ground attack aircraft and helicopters, especially if they try to land right in front of your nose. And the big advantage is if youre flying say a balckhawk at low altitud eover the jungle, there's no way you'll know there's a guy with a SA-7 Strela out there until he smokes you right out of the sky.The only defense is to stay high ,or to sweep in as fast as you can, drop flares, and pray.Neither option is available to troop-carrying helicopters(well, they cna drop flares, but they're really way to slwo to hope to survive). And anyway,a guy with an AK-47 can down a blackhawk,so you'd better keep them away from the fighting.

Night falls in the jungle. Flying low as not to be spotted by enemy radar, the 3 Blackhawks fly silently to a small area. 12 troops from each helicopter rappel down into the jungle below. They carry radios and laser finders, in addition to their M-4 rifles. Their mission is to find enemy SAM sites and direct SEAD missions against them. They are under orders to avoid trouble and tread softly, leaving no trace. For this they have been trained for years. They are among the highest trained soldiers in the Bonstocknian military. They know exactly what to do.

Meanwhile, the 6th Airborne guards the base of the 20 B-52s and 60 F-16s, a total of 80 aircraft besides 6th Airborne's helicopters based at the base in government territory. So far all is quiet. Eight F-16s perform CAP over the base. Another eight are on a mission over the jungle, trying to flush out resistance. Soon a mission is planned to coordinate with the Special Forces. Thirty F-16s will be taking part in this operation. Their mission is to destroy the SAM sites located by the Special Forces. Each carry two HARMs and four AAMs, in case of trouble. They also have their guns ready. The pilots are prepared for their mission, which is to take place tommarrow night. Meanwhile, more B-52s will be sent in to carpetbomb areas of the jungle where the enemy is.

The Choppers had dropped the entourage off before even reaching the border of the conflict riddled nation. Even the dignitaries were in covert gear. They rushed forward, moving as quickly as they could to get through to their destination. Having planned ahead, they waited until fighting had broken out nearby to cover their entry.

In the team, a Radio technician sent a message to the capital, encoded of course. They wanted to get the meeting place quickly so they could get the General into relative safety. Of course it wasn't at all obvious who was a political entity within the team, so no one was an obvious target. Finding an easily defendable position, they settled in and waited for the message for where to go.

***Nimbata please read!***

FERRUSSIA - The People's Republic of Ferrussia made a public announcement this morning that it intends to assist the democratic Nimbatian government, possibly with direct military support. Military troops and supplies are at this moment being prepared to be dispatched on RT-S10 transports, and supplimented by EM-90 "Manatee" Strategic Sealift vessels. The exact numbers of ships, supplies, and men is currently classified, but they are expected to arrive at Nimbatian waters in about 1 week.

The full Ferrussian Carrier Group Putin* will be escorting the convoy. The ships are ordered to wait outside of Nimbatian waters in the event that the Nimbatian government has not approved the support upon the convoy's arrival. Government officials are in communication with top Nimbatian government and military leaders, and approval is expected to come through soon.

A large-scale poll shows that a significant majority of the Ferrussian populace is in support of the military assistance, however many hold their reservations about how the war will play out. A costly, casualty-ridden war is definately not what the Ferrussian people are looking to sustain.

Top military manufacturers across the country are shifting into high gear, preparing ammunition, medical supplies, food, and other battlefield necessities.

While the government has assured the populace that Ferrussia is "definately not sending a majority of [the armed forces]", however they "feel we will be making a major contribution to the rightful government in Nimbata."

[OOC - Nimbata, I've left room to ICly cancel the deployment if you feel it would overweight the RP. I'd like to help, though, and I would be especially careful to accurately RP it and keep the war fair at the same time. RPs are never fun when they become a dogpile.

I won't be avilable tomorrow until about 3:30 pm Mountain time (5:30 pm Eastern), so if that's the 1 week it takes my group to get there, it might work out nicely. But I'll play it how it goes.

At any rate, lemme know if it'd be ok for me to join. Thanks a bunch! (PS I might be able to help a bit with maps, organization, etc. of the RP)

Oh, and by the way, don't be concerned about the size of the escorting carrier group. I just want to make especially careful that they aren't attacked on the way. :) ]

This is an official notification from 6th Fleet Command currently operating in international waters near Nimbata.
The government of Nimbata has attempted to enforce its illegal naval embargo on a fellow nation which resulted in the sinking of a vessel, I responded in kind and launched aircraft to seek and destroy. Any further attempt to continue the embargo will be met with similar results, to the Ferrussia naval group I urge you to refrain from supporting the embargo as you will also face similar consqeunces.

Ferrusia: Tone it down a bit,, id rather have lots of smaller contributions.

Okay guys the situation is currently as it was as of the 12th of August.

IC:

This Morning the Nimbatan Navy admitted to the loss of one coastal patrol vessel in the Andaman sea. This constitutes an act of war in international waters and the nation of Nimbata refuses to allow Pirates, Communists and terrorists to stalk the waters off our nation while assisting a rebellion within our nation. This has resulted in an escalation of the embargo and Nimbata's small and ageing submarine fleet has been put to to sea as wel as additional frigates and patrol boats.

In the Capital Rangoon, the parliament has approved the use of the Special Military Poilce (SMP) to arrest, detain or execute any government official or member of the military who is suspected of conspiring, colluding or supporting the NLA without trial, as an emergency and temporary measure to prevent ecommunist espionage.

[OOC - this sort of thing is why we're bringing such a large naval force, it's all primarily for fleet protection. Some of the ships may also be able to help with your patrols on request. However, if you still don't want me to bring the full fleet, lemme know.]

FERRUSSIA - The fleet and transport left dock today, with many families sending off their loved ones in a huge crowd at the Ferrussian Naval Yards. The 3 carriers of the fleet will be able to provide slightly more than 2 wings (a wing is 72 planes) of air cover and support to land forces in the ground fighting and/or aerial protection over the seas. While the number of transports and other major questions of the fleet still remain classified, there are a few rumors going around that Ferrussia may, even in mid-transport, call off some of the troops destined to Nimbata. Once again, though the government claims the amount of troops will not be a large portion of the armed forces, they say they still hope to "make a decent impact for good in Nimbata."

More news when we have it.

Somewhere in Kachin State

This video tape is sent to all nations supporting the capitalists:

Two blindfolded pilots in flight suits are shown tied to wooden chairs, they are recognisable as the Kahtani A-4 Pilot and the Tradewinds A-10 pilot.
Uniformed NLA soldiers surround them and an officer addresses the camera. "You have clearly not seen our resolve, if you not shall allow us to liberate our naion, we shall not allow your men to live. We are not brutal people and we hope this lesson will not have to be repeated."

Two soldiers approach the Kahtani pilot and slash his fastenings with a knife freeing him from the chair, they then kick him on to the floor and when he is kneeling sufficiently a single shot rings out as a bullet from the officer's Makarov penetrates he pilot's skull. The Tradewinds pilot then shouts and he is also unbound, then kicked, then shot.

As the only neutral force in the region wiling to strive for peace I have been instructed by my Commander In Chief to act as a mediator between the opposing government and rebel forces, including each sides numerous international backers. I ask that the naval blockade be halted and that the role of inspecting ships on a course for Nimbata be undertaken by ships and personnel under my command.

To all naval forces operating in the region, I suggest you keep your task force under the strictest rules of engagement, I would hate for nervous patrols to engage causing a heightening in tension, I have given orders not to engage Ferrusian or any other nations military shipping, unless fired upon first.

The nation of Nimbata will under no circumstances negotiate with terrorists or war criminals who threaten the security and integrity of our nation. However serious this uprising may be we are confident that with the assistance of our allies to who we are eternally grateful that we will suceed in crushing the enemy.

Tom Joad: We recommend that your ships do not enter the embargo zone as though we would not intentionally fire upon your vessels it is possible that accidents and mistakes might be made. The Nimbatan Navy will maintain the embargo in order to prevent the rebels from aquiring weaponry and resources that endanger the lives of Nimbatan citizens and allied serviceman. Of his there can be no negotiaition, nor concession.

The Nimbatan governments course of action is most dissapointing, it was my commanders hope that after the regretable sinking of Nimbatan vessel that we could all look to diplomatic solutions to the conflict, your reluctance will be permanently noted and if you are forced to negotiate in the future know that you will recieve no benifit from having snubbed our offer before.

I shall tell you directly that any attempt to engage any ships under my command will not be tolerated in the slightest question will be asked after the offending vessels have been removed as a threat, I suggest you inform your commanders that caution is be used especially in international waters.
Your embargo zone has no legitimacy outside your own territorial waters, as a sign of faith though we will allow you to inspect all shipping in your waters any attempt to do so in international waters however is piracy.

An odd buzz of excitement was over the fleet and its crews. Ferrussia was going to war!

The radar operator practically jumped out of his chair when it beeped at him.

"Admiral, sir, we're reading an unidentified ship a hundred miles away or so."

The captain looked through his high-grade long range binoculars.

"She's sporting the Nambatian flag!" said the captain.

"Comm, contact the ship and request permission to enter Nambatian waters to deploy military support," said the Admiral. "Navigation, we're still outside of Nambatian waters, right?"

"Aye, sir. 37.2 miles out."

"Good." The Admiral allowed himself a weak smile. This was his first command, and he was darn well going to get it right. "Commander Zanichov, bring the fleet to full stop immediately."

"Yessir," came the reply.

The comm officer broadcast over the previously provided radio frequency of the Nambatian navy.

"Unidentified Nambatian Ship, this is the FMS Alexandr Putin, Defiant-class Aircraft carrier and flagship of the Carrier Group Putin of the Navy of the People's Republic of Ferrussia requesting permission for the Carrier Group Putin to enter Nambatian waters as previously arranged. We would appreciate escort to the nearest friendly port or beach."

A stiff silence fell over the bridge as every man awaited the response.

United Elias has been monitoring the situation in Nimbata for a while and while we do not wish to get involved militarily, our goverment has a strong desire to keep the new regime in power due to a considerable business interest in the country. For example Elias National Airlines owns, manages and operates Nimbata's airline which has now obviously suspended operations. Other agreements we have included a large oil export deal and we have an 18 bilion dollar loan that we would like to get paid back.

Certain steps we will be taking are as follows:
-We will be sending 1,200 advisors who will range from military officers to counter intelligance operatives.
-We are sending a small taskgroup of four Manatee sealift ships and two Beluga Frigates. The sealift ships will be configured as hospital ships and will be available to treat victims of the war civilian or military.
-Oli tankers will continue to bring refined fuels to nimbata under escort and payments will be suspended until after the conflict.

United Elias fully supports the embargo and believes it is an entirely legal and neccessary action.

The RT-S10 transports have begun unloading at the Nimbatan port of Rangoon (I'm assuming everything just goes through, to save some time), but due to the sheer number of vehicles and men, nearby (unimproved) beaches are being utilized for vehicle organization and deployment. To avoid distressing citizens (most don't take well to tanks rolling down their roads, friendly or not), they're being moved around via LCAC (hovercraft). Ferrussian forces are on a tight schedule, trying to bring their full avaliable forces to land as soon as possible.

Port of Rangoon

The old trawler had been their cover for the last few weeks and now the 18 men dived over the side one by one as quietly as possible. Using their compasses they swam in formation acorss the muddy and fast moving waters of the Irrawaddy.

When they neared the otherside they could see the looming silhouttes of Navy ships and huge Ferrussian transport vessels. There were a few patrol boats but they were equipped with only a tiny searchlight and posed no real threat.
They came to the first Manatee sealift ship which was a hive of activity as tanks, trucks and armored vehicles rolled off ramps . A few hand signals were exchanged and they split up and swam down the side of the vessel. Attaching timed mines every fifty feet to the hull just below the water line.

Once they had fininshed they proceeded over to one its sisterships and repeated the process before regrouping and swimming back across the Irrawady, they had forty minutes before the mines detonated, hopefully they would be well out the way...

On the FMS Vladimir Putin, 50 miles out from port:

"Copy, Admiral Wilk, I've got Admiral Zarikovsky right here."

"Greetings, Admiral Wilk. This is Admiral Zarikovsky. If this is about our support of Nimbatan troops, I don't believe it will interfere with any of your plans. We will not engage Tom Joadian troops unless fired upon. Now, what was i --"

As Admiral Zarikovsky looked out over the sea, a large fireball rocketed up above the horizon, piercing the dark night like a flaming torch. He was speechless for a few seconds.

"Ensign!" he yelled to the radio operator. "Get me one of those cargo ships on our secure frequency! NOW!" Turning back to the phone in his hands, he addressed the Admiral.

"Admiral Wilk, I'm going to have to go now. There's something going on at the port, an explosion. I... Admiral, if you pan out to be behind this..." He hung up the phone-like reciever. This was NOT how things were supposed to work.

"Sir, I have the Freedom on radio." The ensign handed the Admiral another reciever.

"Freedom, this is Admiral Zarikovsky, what the *@#! is going on down there!?"

"I- I'm sorry sir, it's chaos over here!" The captain was shouting over small explosions in the background. "Two of the Manatees are having trouble, sir... it seems like they've been attacked, but we can't see anyone or anything that could have done it. One of the Manatees is alright, it was carrying some of the Crusaders, though. We had some of them off, but we've lost quite a few. She hit bottom, and the deck is still slightly out of the water, so they're working to get them off through the deck cranes. She's a total loss, however, and some of the Crusaders are too damaged from the blast, or blasts..."

"What about that fireball?" demanded the Admiral.

"Sir, that was another Manatee, it's not good though. She was carrying ammunition and gasoline, for the most part. There's still munitions going off, and the gas fires are out of control. The crew is in the water, and the firefighting teams are losing ground... most of the nearby ships are alright, for now. No major damage. Sir, the dock she was on is going to be out of commission for a while, and the ship is blasted to bits. We're going to need more supplies before we can bring our full force to bear."

"*@#!" said the Admiral. "Captain, I want you to talk to the Nimbatans. Tell them we're coming in to within 10 miles of the port and anchoring there, and if he doesn't like it, he can shove it up my #$@, okay!?"

"Er, yessir," and the captain hung up.

"*@#!" repeated the Admiral.

General Kalishnov has ordered patrols on every dock and around every landing area. Tanks are being sent to every supply depot for protection, and many of the farther out landing areas are being pulled in. Supplies are being reassigned, and a request for additional food and water is being sent to Nimbatan High Command. All the landing areas are now within an 8 mile radius of the command post.

Transport offloading has sped up considerably, and is expected to be done within the hour. As soon as they are done, they will be leaving port and sent home to resupply with ammunition with a small escort from the Carrier Group.

OOC - I'm changing the number of supply trucks to 7,500, but keep in mind this isn't just for 6,500 troops. It's for EVERYTHING, including tanks, the guys in the tanks, artillery, the guys in the artillery, etc. etc.

I'll probably be gone for a while now. I might be able to post for a few minutes in about an hour, hour and a half, but other than that I'll be gone 'till like 7 or 8 EST. See ya.

Nimbatan Naval headquaters building Port of rangoon

Commodore Yan Gui Yung paced up and down, A young officer rushed up to him. "Sir, message from the Putin, they're coming closer to the coast and anchoring."

"I should imagine they're pretty pissed..." An explosion in the background interupts him. Since the mines went off Mi-14s had been depthcharging the harbour continuesly.

"Yes, that ones way of putting it."

"How is it at the dock?"

"Well everythings still on fire seems one of the ships was carrying fuel and ammunition. At least now we've managed to get helicopters in to evacuate the wounded. Lot of bad burns and shrapnel injuries."

"Motherf*****s, we're gonna get em back for this, how many of the casualties are Nimbatan?"

"Quite a lot, dock workers, naval liasons, pretty bad."

The Admiral walks out on to a Veranda over looking the harbor and on the other side of the harbor huge flames illuminate the night sky.
Helicopters are everywhere and gunboats shoot the water at even the slightest ripple of movement. At the entrance to the headquarters compound, extra guards are being brought it on flatbed trucks.

IC: Pier 19, Port Rangoon Naval Yards

As the brave Nimbatan dock firefighters struggled to put out the still raging fire on board the second Manatee, Manatee IV, the rest of the docks were abuzz as the last vehicles and supplies were loaded off of the remaining transports. The sun peeked over the horizon, and over the radio, General Kalishnov organized a moment of silence at 0600 hours for the 127 presumed dead Ferrussian servicemen. Most had simply been ship operators, loadmasters, those who happened to be on the dock, and the brave crew of the FMS Manatee IV. The remembrance service also included the hundreds of Nimbatan dockworkers, firefighters, and other men who gave their lives as well.

Ferrussia would not forget her first casualties.

Our nation would like to express its sympathies to Ferrussia and Nimbata for the loss of their brave serviceman. This incident further strengthens our resolve and proves that our enemies are terrorists who cannot be allowed to overthrow a freedom loving nation of the world. 8 Sea King Helicopters have been dispatched from our fleet which is still several hundred miles away. They will assist in medical evacuation duties and then patrol the area around tbe Port of Rangoon in the hope of preventing further atrocities.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter, and we fail to see the use of any actual terror tactics. The capitalist world's tendancy to call anyone it dislikes a "terrorist" is highly disturbing.

Well how about defending Kahta?

Kahta situation:

The city of kahta is located on the Irrawady river valley about 165 miles North of Mandalay, it has been under siege from the North West for quite a while and has been subjected to nearly contsant artillery and mortar fire from the hillside jungle.
The city is defended by about 9,500 Nimbatan Army regulars and the surrounding areas by about 13,000 local militiamen. Desertion and defection are a real problem. Although the defending troops have been able to repel several NLA assaults re-enforcements have been brought from Bhamo and the NLA air defences ae becoming more organised hampering efforts of Kahtani and Nimbatan Air power near the city.

The loss of the city of kahta would be deeply felt by the Nimbatan Army and would almost certainly lead to a fullscale assault on nearby NamKham (which may happen anyway) and eventually most likely Mandalay, if the second city [Mandalay] fell to the communists it would put the war in a nearly unwinnable position for the democratic goivernment.

(OOC- this will actually happen in an hour or two, I'm just posting it now. Just because I'm posting it from the perspectives that the Ferrussian forces are already in Kahta, doesn't mean they are (yet). This will happen as soon as they get there)

Ferrussian forces are now setting up throughout the city. Buildings of any strategic or defensive value are being used to set up outer defenses. While Ferrussians will be on defense for the time being, the command is preparing for a preemtive strike on the nearby communist forces. They hope to push back the assailants. The defensive positions in the city are there to be fallen back to in the event of a failed attack.

Local Combat HQ will be near the middle of the city, in a vacated warehouse that was found. The commanders are talking to the local Nimbatan forces to see what the status of the area is. If they lack them, Nimbatan AND militia leaders will be given mobile radios and GPS recievers so that they can relay coordinates of enemy positions to Ferrussian Local Combat Headquarters (FLOCOM), who in turn can order in a precision artillery strike by the Crusader artillery positions behind the city.

FLOCOM and the Ferrussian Military hope to achieve optimum cooperation with local Nimbatan/militia forces.

(Similar actions are being taken in NamKham, although on a more defensive plan)

Along the Main Madnalay-Kahta Road

The Red Guard guerilla group was lying near the side of the road, the radio man sending constant messages back to NLA HQ in Myitkina detailing the columns of tanks, trucks and aritlley units rumbling along the track escorted by lines of troops.

Once they had done this, the sixty or so men set up for their ambush, aiming their RPGs at the lightly armoured trucks which would then cause a blockage for the rest. ABout a hundred or so more guerillas were deeper in the jungle and they were working their way South to attack there a little later.

"Attack!." The Officer among them shouted and the trees engulfed in gun fire, rifle grendes popped as they shot towards the trucks and infantry who were being harrased by machinegun fire. The Ferrusians however reacted faster than their Nimbatan Regular Amry counterparts had done and dived for cover while the tanks swivelled their turrets. RPG-7s streaked towards the supply vehicles and there was a fireball about a hundred feet in the air as a fuel truck was hit.

Standard guerilla training dictates that when dealing with tanks close the range so much they would be inefective and thats what they were doing, sprinting forward, bayonets fixed and facing an onlsaught of fire fom the Ferrusian troops. There was an exlposion behind as a round from one of the Merkava V tanks hit the ground spraying hot shards of metal everywhere. Some smoke grenades were tossed and while this helped them storm forward it meant that they were fring madly and blindly.

A young private was the first to reach the road and the first thing he saw when he cleared the smoke was an enemy solider with an M16 pointed at his head. He waited for the fatal shot but all he heard was a 'click' of a jam and in a massive burst of strength he lunged forward plunging his bayonet into the man's chest before being shot with a Burst from elsewhere.

The fight was now chaotic at best and the Ferrusisans were inflicting some damage but the Red Guard could take casualties more easily. Grenades, smoke and FMJ rounds exploded around the road, the tanks were now useless and the shear volume of the Red Guard charge was overwhelming although it was clear few if any would survive the battle....

I have received and read the telex from the Ferussian Admiral and accept its actions, however I still have yet to recieve anything similar from the Nimbatan government. As before I request that Nimbatan naval forces do not stop and search ships in international waters as they will find patrol aircraft paying close attention to them.

It does not have to come to violence it is all up to the Nimbatan government now and to the NLA as I ask both sides to call a ceasefire and meet for peace talks aboard my flagship or other neutral territory acceptable to both parties, the fighting has grown very fierce and many civilians are dieing for lack of anywhere to go.
26-08-2003, 18:36
It does not have to come to violence

Our nation wonders exactly what you term as violence. In our land violence is the use of force with intent to injure or kill. The NLA have shown that they will use any method to destroy order, democracy and freedom in our nation. We will under no circumstances yield our embargo of neigbouring waters and allow weapons to reach our enemies. This foolish action would not make peace but prevent it. The Government and military of Nimbata has a duty to protect our citizens and we are intent on honouring that duty.

Bonstocknian units were now about to get what they had been waiting for. As of now, thier presence was only as a barrier to insurgants. Their helicopters destroyed enemy fighters trying to get through the Bonstocknian bases. But thiese were random terrorists, and most had found better paths to bomb the capital. Now the Bonstocknians were about to ship out on what could be the boggest Bonstocknian operation of the entire war.

The B-52s stood gleaming in the evening sun, glowing red and purple as it set. They were being loaded and feuled for the first time in a long while. They were to form a large scale strike mission - all 60 of them - at the forces besieging Khata. It will be a carpet bombing unlike anyother so far attempted. As the crews were being breifed, 8 F-16s and 1 E-767 AWACS plane took off. The F-16s were to knock out the enemy SAM sites, while the AWACS identified threats to the bombers. All seemed ready as night fell.

At the base of the 6th Infantry Divsion, an unconventional assault would be underway. The helicopters would take them only as far as Mandalay. Then 6 battalions would be droped off in sucessive waves of UH-60s. AH-64s would open the assault at night, unseen by the enemy, right before the B-52s. They had already taken off, right as the first wave of the UH-60s took off. Some of the helicopters had underthem HMMWVS and 5ton trucks, which would be loaded with troops and supplies. Some would later carry the 3 battalions of Divisional Artillary, 18 light guns each. The operation would take all night to complete as the Bonstocknians relocated. Ten waves would be needed to bring all the supplies and troops. Then, at dawn, they would attack on foot and with thier trucks and HMMWVS down the road to Khata to relieve the seige. These were the best trained, best equipped men in the entire Bonstocknian Army, and they were prepared to defeat the enemy. 6,000 of these troops would go that night, then more would follow from support battalions.

The B-52s then prepared for the assault. They slowly bagan to take off and climb. Meanwhile, the AH-64s arrvied in the target area, and opened up with their rockets and missiles at troops concentrations.

Cabinet Office Briefing Room A (Situation Room), Sultanate of Kahtan

The Air Force Chief of Staff stood at the far end of the room addressing the Sultan and senior Ministers, reconnaissance photos of several Nimbatan cities were being shown on a huge flat screen.

“Sir, My staff and I have formulated a plan that we believe would have devastating effects on the NLA and significantly curtail infiltration into Southern Nimbata. Our recon planes have being taking photographs of the city of Myitkina for several days now and intelligence on the ground confirms our suspicions. This city as you know is the Capital of Kachin State and is effectively the very heart of communist Nimbata, it is where the uprising began and the population have always been known to be some of the most pro-communist in the country. Also located in the city are many key infrastructure facilities such as a fuel distribution plant that used to be for storing fuel that arrived from Mandalay before it was distributed to local areas. There are government and administration buildings that we believe NLA commanders are using as command centres and there are countless military targets such as tank parks, barracks, airfields and ammunition warehouses. We have detailed a plan called ‘Night Thunder’ that I will outline: First of all we will attack areas around the city with Anti-Radiation missiles that should knock out most of their limited Surface to Air missile network. We will follow this up with a massive night time raid of the city using nearly all available aircraft we have in Nimbata, missions will be flown at above 16,000ft at all times to minimise the risks of man portable surface to air missiles, of which they have many. We will first of all concentrate on military targets using iron bombs and cluster munitions. Bombing from this altitude gives us limited accuracy but the city is effectively an area target as there are so many targets within it. Following the first night of bombing, we will examine our progress and launch a second such attack on the following night if this should prove necessary.

The Sultan looks around the room and all of his advisors nod approvingly at him, he then looks at the General and nods as well. A document is passed across the table and he carefully signs off on an operation that would mean a huge escalation of the Kahtani part of the war.

The General then goes to the back of the room raises a telephone and says, “Night Thunder is a go.”

OOC: This is not going to happen until for two dys (RL) but I just wanted to let people know so they can join in the operation if they want to.

Main Kahta-Mandalay Road, Nimbata

"Holy crap!" yelled the Commander. He ducked down inside the tank just as a few rounds flew past. "AMBUSH!" he yelled into the radio.

RPG-7s flew into the group of tanks. The two tanks leading the column took over 5 RPGs alone, with one losing significant armor and a track. As it stopped cold in the road, the entire column was forced to come to a stop. Smoke grenades started going off. Infantrymen looked alarmedly around, some dropping to a crouch.

"FIX BAYONNETS!" the Commander yelled, coming back up to a standing position in the turret. "FIX BAYONNETS, DANG IT! AND GET ON THOSE .50 CALS!"

The soldiers paused only for a second to attach the bayonnets, and men came up from the tanks to take control of the .50 caliber machine guns. As the rebels came through they began to fire. The .50 cals and other mounted machine guns opened up on the rebels, but the limited view wasn't helping. The commander cursed the wind as it started to blow right into their faces, bringing the smoke right to them.

"Get some .50 cal Humvees in here, NOW!" called the commander over the radio. They would need all the help they could get.

Some of the infantry started ducking behind the tanks, firing at the oncoming rebels. Suddenly, out of the smoke, another round of RPGs shot out. One smashed into the supply column right in front of them, and a giant fireball pierced through the smoke. The commander could just make out the truck next to it as it was blown over by the blast.

"We need to take out those RPGs! Tanks, fire on their general position!" Not that they could really see where that was through the smoke.

The wind slowly started to change, blowing the smoke behind them. The commander breathed a temporary sigh of relief, until the smoke had cleared enough that he could actually see the enemies still coming at them. Where there had been smoke and a few sporadic bursts of fire seconds before, he could suddenly see over 100 enemy soldiers.

"OPEN FIRE!!!" he screamed, but they were already firing away at the soldiers they could now see. 9 .50 cals started blazing away at the enemy, and infantry, in front of and behind the tanks, began to fire more vigorously now that they could see their enemy.

15 Humvees drove up from somewhere behind them in the column, and began firing at every enemy they could see. The men on the ground were taking pretty bad casualties, and the tanks were of no use with enemy soldiers almost right next to the tanks.

"THE RPGs ARE IN THE TREES!" someone yelled, and sure enough, a few suspicious shadows were hiding in the trees.

"TANKS, FIRE ON THE TREES!" yelled the commander, and the tanks turned to fire over the heads of the rushing enemies, right into the dense grove of trees. A few of the trees took direct hits, and instantly snapped like twigs as their trunks were blown to bits. A several-hundred foot long section of the forest just yards from the tank exploded almost simultaneously in hot metal and dirt. Wooden fragments flew, a few even hitting enemy soldiers. A fine layer of dirt started to rain down on the tanks, with the explosions being so close.

The Humvees and infantry continued to work on the charging soldiers. Sometimes soldiers in the back seats of the Humvees actually got close enough to the enemies to stab them with their bayonnets, but the rest simply fired out of the rolled-down windows. A second volley from the tanks, and more trees and dirt exploded with a tremendous noise, both from the tanks firing and the shells hitting.

The enemy tide began to waver, and the Humvees and infantrymen took their opporitunity. They began charging them, driving the few survivors back into the trees, gunning down those who they saw.

*****

Casualties were more than they should have been. 89 casualties, and 37 of those were deaths. Two of the supply trucks were gone, with a third disabled. 4 tanks took heavy damage, and had to be pushed off the road to make way for the convoy. 5 more took damage, but not irreperable.

Wounded (and bodies of the dead) are being evacuated via the Kahtanian helicoptors. We've requested that they be taken to Ferrussian Combat Headquarters in Mandalay.

Galdanian submarines, which had previously been watching the conflict from along the coast, sent communications to the government of the North.

'The Galdanian government is preparedto launch attacks against targets in the South. Galdanian Naval Command believes that we can sneak into Southern waters undetected and sink enemy ships before the realise the danger they are in. Currently, six Breshlov-class submarines are off the coast, with thirteen more ready to be launched from the naval island of Ulayvov in the South China Sea. The aircraft carrier, the NVG Nanilovsk is ready to sail within range of land-based targets, escourted by eight smaller ships. The two helicopters lifted off from the Ivan Rogov troopship, the men inside them seeming unusually calm for this sort of campaign. It was widely known that the NLA were savage fighters, and when they took prisners, they weren't nice people. The chopper turned out its internal lights, and switched to an eerie glow of red. The troopers each carried TM AK-47 Beita Spetsnaz rifles, they were the elite 4th Regiment. They were the survivalist regiment, dropped into the back yard of an enemy and left to disrupt lines and communications. They carried an updated version of the AK-47 so they could recycle their ammuntion off of those they kill. They were able to live off the environment, especially Nimbatas, its high monkey population would allow for nightly feasts. The EA-24G's swept in low, the sound dampening system working like a charm, the gunners sweeping the Jungle looking for targets. They two choppers dropped down, the rear ramp dropped and the men ran from each compter into prone fighting positions. The choppers lifted off once more and went home. the 36 Elite Soldiers calmly snuck into the jungle.

Road North of Kahta

There was a huge column of vehicles, mostly trucks and UAZs that were heading South to the frontline or at least they had been until the air strikes. Nearly all of them were either damaged or destroyed and the death toll was predicted to be at least 4,000. The NLA would not be defeated that easily though and quietly and carefully they were repositioning. Some 18,000 Reinforcements from Bhamo had been redirected to catch the enemy off guard at Namkham and would attack in the next few days. Meanwhile large groups of infantry had quietly been moving from the Northern areas to surround the city from the East and West. Spreading thinner would also make them less of a target for bomb runs.

Along the Chindwin river valley, Saigaing Division, 50 miles East of Tamu

The Western front had gone more smoothly and the of 4,000 Red Guard (split into ten different groups) had been slowly inflitarting South, occasionally meeting some resistance from local tribesman who were quickly and quietly eliminated. In this area of the Jungle the government had no control anyway, it was simply too remote. They were to bypass the city of Tamu, leaving it for the main force that was following some 50 miles behind them, and proceed South, following the Chinwin river all the way to where it joined the Irrawady near Mandalay. Hopefully by then the Galdanians would have helped them to shore up the Eastern Front which was sadly being fought too conventionally for the likes of the NLA commanders in Myitkina.

The 6th Airborne Division had sucessfully relocated to Mandalay using its many helicopters. Now it was only a matter of time until reinforcements of the suppoert units arrived. The Bonstocknian forces were about to go on a road less travelled by. Instead of going along the heavily ambushed road, they would send light units to follow the railroad to Shwebo (sp?). A few miles north of that town was where the rails intersected the road. Then, they would proceed on to Khata along the conventional road. The infantry would walk before, and in the jungle, to find any of the snipers and ambushers. Once the area was declared secure, the trucks would follow. At the very least, the Bonstocknian drive with other forces would tie down some of the enemy.

Galdania:

You have our authorisation to start supporting our revolution and we suggest that your land forces deploy by air rather than sea as currently the NLA controls no coast whatsoever and there is an exremely large enemy naval presence off Nimbata. On the other hand we have several long runways for heavy transport aircraft principaly at Myitkina and Putao although there are others as well.

The B-52s have now landed at their bases, and rearmed and refueled. The crews have gotten a small amount of sleep until the sun came up. They ate a meal, and then Bonstocknian sattelites found a new target.

"General, we have detected two large enemy airfields in the places around Mytkina and Putao."

"What is their use? Does the enemy have aircraft?"

"Im not sure."

"Well, we must deny this to the enemy. He should not be able to intercept our aircraft. I want all the bombers to get back up and bomb that place, Colonel."

"Yes, sir."

The Colonel walked into the barracks. The base, located near Rangoon, was literally cut out of the jungle; barracks and hangars were prefabricated, and the entire facility was surrounded by forests. The base had one runway and a taxiway with dozens of small concrete-covered areas where the giant Stratofortresses slept as they were prepared by mechanics.

The Colonel saw as the pilots were all playing craps and poker. He walked up just as one of the men won a big hand of poker.

"Lieutenant Granvil, I see you have won something," said the Colonel.

The man instantly leapt up and saluted. The otheres did the same, taken totally off guard by his appearance. The Colonel spoke again. "Gentlemen, we are going on another raid. We are going to bomb two air fields. Briefing is in two hours, you will take off at 6."

The men kept saluting, and the Coolonel exited the room.

"Phew, I though he'd demote me or something."

"Charlie, only Generals can do that. Hes a Colonel."

"He scared me worse then the NLA." Suddnely cracks of bullets were heard. "What the h--l?"

Outside, a guy with an AK-47 had started firing wildy at the base. The MPs fired machineguns at him, and the attack stopped. No one was hurt on the Bonstocknian side.

"God what was that?"

"I dunno, but those MPs made some quick work of him. Personally I think we ought to be on some island, away from this, away from the NLA, and away from this f---ing jungle. These mosquitos are getting me down, and if I have to eat this shlop they call food one more time, Im gonna go insane."

"Erg, likewise."

The Small group of men sat in the jungle abouth three miles from the Bonstock Air Base, they'd seen the BUFFs land and their source inside the base (A Nimbatan cook doing a bit off espionage on his tea break) said they'd be going back out again that night.

They were from the Nimbtatan Revolutionary Workers Movement, a small underground organisation formed just after the communists had been kicked out of power, with the sole intention of returning the regime. They were mostly young and they were all fanatical in their beliefs.

It was time,..They had spent the last few hours aligning their collection of
17 Mortars at the taxiways and hangars and they were just about certain they had ranged them right. The first shells were dropped in the barrels and, one by one they fired, beigng reloaded and fired again and again as quickly as they could, not knowing how long it would take for them to find them. There was a satisfying rumble as it seemed one of the shells might have hit the fuel storage tanks, but the vast height of the trees preventing them from seeing the fireball, if there was one.

"General, we're being shelled!"

"What the heck! GEt those MPs out there."

"They blew up two large feul tanks, and a B-52 is damaged severely!"

"God d--nit! Get those attack helicoters on it. It thought we had destroyed underground groups."

"Obviously not, sir. The helicopters will take off now."

"Good."

The 8 crews enter the 8 AH-64s, and take off. The arrive at the mortars, and saturate the area with rockets and machine guns. After the pass, they zoom back to base to be rearmed. They have enough feul, as it is only a short distance. They take back off, to do the same.

"General, they blew up our feul, and we dont have enough for the bombing!"

"God d--nit! Do we have enough for them to take off?"

"Not that much, sir."

"All right, get Maropian Coast [Bonstock's colony and military base in Taiwan] to send in 4 KC-767s. One of them will land here, fueling the bombers with minimum take off feul. Then each one will get a full refueling from the rest of the tankers. Each tanker will give 20 refuelings. Then we will have to get more cargo planes to fly in more fuel. So how many more bombs do we have?"

"Enough for this raid, but no more."

"Well, get a few cargos in after the raid. The raid is postponed until 9:00. Then we will do this. But remember... next time all feul and ammunition will be stored in underground bunkers."

"Yes sir."

Lemme know if you approve of the ending. Thanks.)

IC:

With defenses firmly established in Kahta, FLOCOM-Kahta is making preparations for an assault on the outlying NLA forces. Word is in from the Bonstockians that bombing raids on their supply lines were largely successful, and FCCH (Ferrussian Central Combat Headquarters) in Mandalay wishes to take full advantage of the situation. A strike will be planned, and 25 EA-24C helicoptors (along with the 1st Airborne Division) will be utilized, recently offloaded from the docks in Rangoon.

The situation in NamKham is looking good, and FLOCOM-NamKham is setting up in a small vacated office building, 3 stories high. Defensive positions are being taken up all over the city, and some scouts have been set up on patrols outside the city. The "Crusader" howitzers have set up towards the middle of the city, as there is no telling where the enemy will come from.

A recent preposition in the Ferrussian government to bring in far more air support than is currently avaliable is looking as if it will pass. A convincing argument has been put forth by the government that additional air support, based in currently existing Nimbatan airfields, would be a tremendous boon to advance intel and air support, an advantage the NLA seems to be low on. If all goes well, the government will approve the deployment of several large groups of close air support, spyplane and AWACS cover, as well as airlift of crutial supplies and reinforcements. In the meantime, Ferrussian diplomatic officials are in negotiation with Nimbata to find out which airfields and how many planes could be used.

For now, the Ferrussian troops are waiting.
29-08-2003, 17:28
The Royal Kahtani Military would like to setup a liason with FLOCOM-Namkham as we have about 1,200 troops stationed at the airfield just South of the city with more troops expected to arrive. They are currently only equipped with Land Rovers as the runway is still being upgraded so larger planes can land with heavier vehicles. Currently the airfield is only capbale of landing a C-130 which makes logisitcs difficult. (We want to avoid the long jungle roads for obvious reasons)

Also we have now established and manned the first twelve 'outposts' in the jungle. They are located at various points between Mandlay and Tamu in the Saigang division.
Here is a reminder of what they are, posted a few weeks back.

The first 12 outposts will consist of small sandbagged bunkers and trenches consisiting of machine gun nests, a helipad for a chopper up to CH-47 size, a radio relay station complete with signals intelligence collection equipment and accomodation for up to 40 troops including a basic medical facility. The aim of these outposts will be to gather intelligence and interdict guerilla infiltration into Southern Nimbata .

At the K1 Airfield outside Mandalay

All day C-5s and C-17s had been landing with personnel and ordnance. Operation 'Night Thunder' had been postponed a day due to the Bonstock base attack. Security was being stepped up with all Nimbatans working on the base being replaced by Kahtani support troops that had to be brought in by plane. At the far end of an airfield four OH-58D helicopters were being unpacked after being unloaded from a C-5, they were going to patrol twenty four hours with thermal imagers, making sure the surrounding jungles were clear and attack if neccessary.

In a Large Concrete Building which housed TACOMM (Tactical Air Command-Mandalay) sand bags were being arranged on the roof and windows were being replaced by covered with steel sheets.

Thank You for your swift action and our mutual co-operation will no doubt lead to a more effective defense of the city, you are of course allowed to operate aircraft from the airstrip but we must remind you it is very short and I have just heard that according to the engineers, that due to the vast amounts of trees , foliage and a small river, lengthening the runway could take months and render the existing one inoperable during that period, buidling a new one parrallel to the old is also not an option. We have however requested the appropriate combat aircraft which will provide a small but capable ground attack and air defence capability in the city of Namkham.

“Well…Navy planes flying from a hole in the jungle, 400 miles room the sea, not crazy about the idea….What does the Admiralty say?”

“They say it’s your decision sir.”

“I guess we don’t really need them down here, so we should probably oblige but how exactly do they get supported? Don’t tell me by the bloody Air Force?”

“Well sir the Air Force will fly in fuel and ordnance but they want some of our deck crews to maintain them. We’ve arranged that we fly the men in choppers to a disused airfield on the coast about twenty or so miles from here, where they transfer to an AF C-130 that takes them up to Namkham just before the Harriers get there.”

“Okay, do it, but try and get replacements sent down on the next replenishment ship headed our way.”

Upon the news that an operational (albeit small) airfield was just outside of Namkham, it was determined that aircraft stationed here would be within striking range of Katha, and that was the final persuasion needed. The air support preposition in the Ferrussian government passed today, and with over 10 EA-80B refuelers, the following aircraft are being flown to Nimbata:

36 Yak-141 VTOL Fighter/Bomber (to land at Namkham airbase)
72 A-14 VSTOL Ground Support Aircraft (to land at Namkham airbase)
50 F-24 "Antares" Interceptor
*classified* U3 High-Altitude Spyplane
*classified* EA-70 Battlefield Recon plane
20 Su-59 Stealth Fighter/Bomber
50 Za-29 "Fiend" Figher/Bomber
25 (more) EA-24C Military Utility/Transport helicopter
10 EA-24G Special Forces helicopter

Those not landing at the Namkham airbase will be landing at the Ferrussians' main airbase in Mandalay and put under the command of FCCH (based in Mandalay). This will soon be accomidating EA-80As, An-124s, and An-225s, bringing in ammunition, fuel, supplies, and (if necessary) reinforcements.

The air support craft landing in the Namkham airfield will be under the joint control of FLOCOM-Namkham and FLOCOM-Katha, but primarily -Namkham.

The shelling stopped, the Bonstocknian Air Base puts out the fires. It is 6:00, the time Bonstocknian planes were supposed to take off. A KC-767 lands at the base, carrying feul. All planes are filed to be able to take off and refeul in flight by more of the KC-767s. At 2100 hours (9:00) The first of the Stratofortresses take off, going to a tanker.

"Strato 1, vector 020 for 5, tanker."

"Roger."

"Strato one, this is tanker, we have visual contact."

"Roger."

"Go Forward.... Up.... Stablilze.... Stabilize.... Connected, showing feul flow.... Fuel transfer complete. Good luck."

The Stratofortress waved off. Behind was another plane in line ot be refueled. A few miles away were two more tankers doing the same thing. In about a half an hour, it was complete. The Stratofortresses formed up around waypoint two, and headed towards the targets. Thirty were to bomb each enemy airfield, destroying as much as they could find. The enemy had no way to shoot down a Stratofortress. They were simply too high for their shoulder fired missiles to reach. The B-52s approached the target area, and dropped their bombs. EAch was fully loaded. The planes quickly got out of there, not seeing the result of their bomb run. They flew back to base.

I am Faraid thatthe atorage of that many aircraft is not possible. The Airfiled ramp area is not huge with very few hangars, we have split the areas into two, one of transport planes which can accomodate up to fourteen C-130 siize aircraft at a time. The other part is to be reserved for V/STOL combat aircraft as it includedes some old Soviet sytyle hangars and a fuel farm.Only 30 such planes can be accomodated so with our fourteen Harriers that leaves room for just fourteen more.

Major General Hasan,

Thank you for the heads-up. We will be storing most of the planes at our headquarters in Mandalay, however we would like to have the 14-16 remaining spaces (if at all possible) for our A-14s. After the A-14s have taken off, this many planes at a time can land, refuel, rearm, and take back of if deployment from Mandalay is necessary.

(Basically, planes would take off from Mandalay, attack, and then land, rearm/refuel at our 14-16 spaces, and take back off again, and they'd take turns.)

Would these arrangements be suitable?

Eastern Hills around Kahta

The NLA had been reduced to fighting with the three weapons they used best: the rifle, the bayonet and the mortar. Sporadic fighting had continued in the North to keep the defenders occupied and now in the East a unit of 3,000 NLA regulars was firing from the hillside on the town with everything they had, mortars were kept firing for hours on end and now the Red Guard further down would make the assault. The enemy air power was taking its toll and now they knew they had to get so close ihey couldnt use it.

There were 1500 of them and as the smoke and explosive rounds obscured the buildings from sight they sprinted down the hill as fast as they could through the trees. Where the treeline ended they charged ahead across a road, people were screaming in the city and tracer rounds zipped over firing, high into the hills and at their comrades.

A young corporal lead his small team through the dense smoke to a small brick structure, suddenly men from the local militia appeared in the wooden doorframe and a volley of AK fire from a Red Guard Private cut through the poorly trained troopers before they could shoot back. It was hard to tell how the battle was going as a cacophony of explosions and gun fire told him nothing as to who was where and the smoke from the mortar shells was too thick to see more than thirty or foty metres.

He ran around the corner of the building across a street to another more pirmitive one which was on fire, then he heard the rumble of a T-55 tank. He shouted an order and two of his fifteen men whipped RPGs to their shoulders and fired down the street at the silhouette whch was approaching. There was an explosion and the tank stopped. Quickly he raised his Mosin-Nagant bolt action to drop a man rnning towards him that he figured was local militia as well.

There was no retreat now, the urban warfare had started and soon the main sassault would follow them...

Eastern edge of Kahta

The Militia commander looked around desperately. Rebel troops were advancing, and word from the front wasn't good. Namely, the fact that the front was less than half a mile away.

As the next messenger came running into the command post, the commander asked him a question. "How long can we hold the area around the command post?"

"About 5 minutes, sir. It's not looking good."

"I need you to run to the other command post and tell them they have until..." he glanced at his watch, "1647 to evacuate his entire front. Got that?"

"Yeah," he said, and suddenly remembered. "Sir."

The commander blew him off, though, and sent his own messengers to tell the lines to pull back in 3 minutes. Then he got on the mobile radio the Ferrussian's had given him.

"MiCOM-4, this is FLOCOM. What do you need, over?" came the reply to his hail.

"Look, guys, I need a complete bombardment of outposts -4 and -3 and the surrounding areas with your heavy artillery. Can you do that at 1648?"

"What does your watch read now, over?"

"1645:14"

"Same. Will do, commander. You guys are being overrun already?"

"No, I'm bombarding our own front," replied the commander sarcastically.

"Dang... the entire east side of the city is caving in. We'll have the artillery strike landing at exactly 1648. I suggest you get yourselves out of there."

"I'm already on it," replied the commander.

Somewhere in Kahta

2 minutes later, 100 of the 155mm Howitzers began their bombardment. The precise telemetry programs of the Crusaders allowed them to land 8 shells near-simultaneously, by changing the vector of each shell. Resupply vehicles were brought to standby, as the artillery would be getting quite the workout today.

Meanwhile, FLOCOM was readying the Ferrussian lines. While the rebels were still not to the Ferrussian line, their mortars were a headache, and spotters were working frantically to calculate the position of each individual mortar. As soon as someone had a fix on a location, the coordinates were sent to FLOCOM and artillery opened fire.

All of the Merkava Vs (urban fighting tanks) were brought to full alert, and told to expect enemy engagements within the hour. It was not looking good from the maps and radios in FLOCOM, and it was looking even worse on the militia's front lines.

*****

MiCOM-3 and -4 outposts

The rebels were advancing, finding little to no resistance. They had forced the enemy into retreat! Still, they advanced cautiously, not wanting to fall into an ambush.

They got to the abandoned outposts at about 1647:45. Finding nothing, they began to push forward. Began being the key word.

Beginning at 1648 exactly, hot metal rained from the sky on what was now the rebel front. In less than 4 seconds, 800 rounds of hot, 155mm metal exploded in the faces and backs of the primary front. Brick buildings crumbled and exploded, the streets were full of shrapnel and impacts, and the entire area was quickly being leveled.

From some of the taller buildings in central Kahta, the fireworks show struck awe in all who saw the bombardment. For four seconds, several blocks of the outlying villiage turned into a single, devastating explosion. The repeated impacts were deafening.

FLOCOM knew that while the strike might temporarily stop the assault, but while it was nice to know they were causing some enemy casualties, the strike was overdone for a single primary reason: to strip the rebels' morale. To see your friend be blown to bits by a land mine or mortar was one thing, but to see the entire front line explode in hot metal and brick was completely different. The front line had probably not seen much of their demise, but those behind them saw entire blocks incinerated.

The militia watched in horror as the rebels charged forward. The Ferrussian line was not far behind them, and many took the wall of advancing soldiers as "incentive" to fall back to the line of friendly men and tanks. Their reception was not welcome, but the Ferrussians would not resort to shooting their own defenders. Instead, they told the militia to get back. They could fall back when they were ordered.

Not many listened.

One of the commanders got on the radio the Ferrussians had provided.

"We've got an enemy charge! They'll be on us in less than a minute! Can we get an artillery strike in before then?"

The operator in FLOCOM immediately told someone to radio the Crusaders and start pointing their guns approximately north, exact coordinates to come.

"Give me the coordinates!" yelled the radio operator. "Where will they be in 25 seconds?"

The commander looked at the GPS. "X-572.5 Gamma Y-24.67"

"The response time of the Crusaders is 15-20 seconds. We'll have your strike. It'll be close to your position, but they're dang accurate. Don't worry about friendly fire, unless your men are charging back."

The commander breathed a sigh of relief and the radio operator relayed the coordinates to the Crusaders, as well as the mortar positions inside the city. Many were occupied firing at the western offensive, but those to the north were awaiting orders.

The commander's men continued firing at the coming offensive from behind walls and chunks of brick wall. Then, they heard a loud, eerie noise, the pitch lowering and lowering. Suddenly, no more than 500 yards in front of them, the men in front of the charge exploded in a cloud of dirt and hot metal. This was different than the previous bombing, however. Shells continued, while in less quantity, constantly. After the front line had been hit, the explosions from above began to move slowly backwards, marching up the rebel offensive.

The thousands of enemy soldiers were spread out in a full charge , and as such, many got through. However, their charge was now riddled by explosions and shrapnel.

The commander went back to the radio. "We need it in closer! They're still coming!"

After about 10 seconds, the shelling stopped only for a moment, then suddenly picked up again, right on the front line of the charge again. Still, enemy soldiers poured through the line of dirt, and while weakened, not dead by any means.

The militia fixed their bayonnets.

Western front of Kahta

The militia continued to fall back, and the Red Guard showed no sign of letting up. The final Militia outposts were giving way, and the commanders controlling them made a final decision.

As instructed, they broadcast over the radio, not only to FLOCOM but to all the militia commanders, "Fallen Tower." After the first milita commander had done this, the others followed suit. The radio operators at FLOCOM were suddenly rushing to make sure that every commander confirmed the Fallen Tower situation. All 6 remaining outposts did.

"You have authorization for Fallen Tower. I repeat, initiate Fallen Tower." There was a pause. "Come on home, guys. You deserve it."

Across the entire western front, the Militia gave way, retreating back to the Ferrussian line of control. There, they helped strenghten the Ferrussian defenses. Darkness was falling, and although FLOCOM expected the Red Guard to take a break for the night, Ferrussian forces were prepared for an attack, whether it was in 15 minutes or 15 hours.

Artillery blasted everything forward of the Ferrussian line. Much of the artillery had been pulled off the Northern front, now that the assault over there was getting close, and support over there was only a constant light bombardment of their streaming offensive.

The Ferrussian forces and their militia counterparts watched.

And waited.

I am now authorised by my leader to issue all naval forces supporting the Nimbatan government to withdraw to Nimbatan waters, failure to do so within the next 24hrs will result in the sinking of any and all of your vessels.
I do this to forcibly show you that pirates will not be tolerated and neither will terror tactics used by the Nimbatan government, call a cease fire very soon or both parties will suffer consequences.

As for now the fighting in and around Kahta must ceace immediatly I will not ask again for a halt to fighting there, the consequences will fall on the heads of those that do not cease military operations.

First Admiral Richard Wilk
Tom Joad Overseas Naval Commander

The People's Republic of Ferrussia has, 8 hours after reciept of the Tom Joadian statement, prepared a response:

While we respect the interests and needs of Tom Joad, we cannot and will not pull out of this defense because you do not agree with it. Ferrussia is not supporting the search of commercial ships outside of Nimbata for weapons or arms, nor would we consider this piracy. To simply make sure that no one is shipping arms to a rogue enemy is completely understandable, and times of war often call for it. There is by no means, from our understanding, a blockade or other detrimental action being taken against anyone except the rebellious forces, and certainly not against Tom Joad. Ferrussian naval reinforcements are expected in 28 hours, and we hope that you will not regard these as in violation of your decree.

The defense of this country against communist rebellion forces is completely justified, as is our support for them. Communist forces are not making themselves avaliable to diplomatic relations, in fact, NO diplomatic channels are avaliable. We cannot stop defending against an enemy who has killed civilians, even entire towns. Defensive forces in Kahta cannot be removed without putting every member's life at risk, and the entire population of the city under ruthless rebels. You cannot retreat forces engaged in battle without expecting a slaughter. We will not pull out of Nimbata at this time.

Our naval forces are protecting our interests and our shipping. You have no justification to attack them, and any attack on them will be a blatant declaration of war against the People's Repubilc of Ferrussia and the Democratic Republic of Nimbata. We urge you to negotiate with us before taking such drastic action. Negotiations will be welcomed on our flagship, the FMS Vladimir Putin, or our secondary flag, the FMS Eric Moore. An envoy would be much appreciated, and great authority will be afforded to the ambassadors on our side.

We urge your nation not to plunge itself into war prematurely. We will let you make your demands, and we will make ours. Thank you for your time.

Signed,

The Senate of the People's Republic of Ferrussia
The House of Representatives of the People's Republic of Ferrussia
Premier Alexandrov Valinski of the People's Republic of Ferrussia

ASW helicoptors are making rounds around the Carrier Group Putin, as are fighters and carrier-adapted AWACS planes, just to be safe. No attack is expected on the Carrier Group, which is well inside Nimbatan waters. However, the fleet is preparing to deploy, in case it is necessary to protect Nimbatan Naval assets.

The airfield was very busy, all day planes were being loaded and fuelled for tommorrow tonight’s long planned ‘Night Thunder’ raid on Myitkina.

Eighteen A-4E Sky Hawks though were already taxiing out, they had been pulled from ‘Night Thunder’ and would instead fly to Kahta to support the defence of the city. Armed with cluster bombs they would fly low over the hills and try to disperse the NLA mortar men and any remaining troops still in the hills, if neccessary they could fly several sorties during the night.

The Sultan has personally authorised that the [i]Prince Rashid Carrier Battle Group, Currently off the coast just West of Rangoon will move closer to the embargo zone near the Ferrussian Fleet. We do not consider the searching of ships in international waters a criminal action and while it may be argued that in peacetime such a move would be viewed with suspicion, we continue to believe that the Nimabtan government has the right to take any measure neccessary to defend its people from a brutal aggressor during this time of all out war. Obviously any attack against Kahtani sipping would place our nations at war as would a similar attack on one of our allies. Ournation is however open to compromise andwe have sent a message to the Nimabatan government asking them to consider allowing other nations such as Ferussia or Kahtan to take control of the embargo in order to allow more neutrality although ensuring that the will of Nimbata is still enforced.

It seems you have ignored and misunderstood what I said, I stated that all naval forces supporting the Nimbatan government where to withdraw to Nimbatan territorial waters, once there they are free to conduct as many searches as they want, my point was that there should be no naval forces engagded in combat sitting in international waters searching ships.

If you still do not understand do these simple things firstly withdraw all your naval assests to Nimbatan territorial waters once there you may do as you wish, secondly keep all naval and aviation assests in Nimbatan territory.

Those are not demands easily misunderstood I hope my position has been made clearer.

"General, we do not have enough bombs or fuel to mount another mass bombing raid."

"And when will we?"

"Maropian Coast is backed up, and we cant get to many C-17s in here for a while."

"How many sorties of C-17s would it take to be able to mount another mass full wing bombing raid?"

"I'll try to find out, sir."

"Also, get me more of those AH-64s. They're perfect against guys firing motar from far away, and can help stop infultration."

"Yes sir. But I think the Army has plans for their UH-60s. That could be a problem."

just outside Mandalay, slightly to the north

Expecting large air support, the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the Bonstocknian 6th Airborne Division starts north along the railroad, going mostly on foot, scouring the jungle for the enemy. They move by night, equiped with night vision goggles, searching for any sign of the enemy. So far not much has happened, but they are only a kiometer or so out of the city, and it is expected that the enemy is planning on attacking soon. Little to their knowledge, the AH-64s they are counting on for air support may be diverted to protecting the bomber base further south. F-16s will be of little help, as fuel and armament priority is going to the B-52s, who are more concerned with bombing strategic targets instead of frontline troop concentrations.

Hills North of Kahta

They had continued firing mortars all day and funnily a supply of shells had come in, just before they ran out. Occasionally they fired illumination rounds to as the NLA didn’t have NVGs but the Ferrussians did. He cold see with his binoculars thou that the battle was progressing and there was no halt in the stream of men chagrin down into the city.

Suddenly he heard a shout, “Quickly Air Defence positions, now.” He dashed over and picked up his Strela SAM launcher and then he heard the Kahtani Sky hawks flying in low. He aimed his tube to the sky and just before he saw the planes above the trees: there was the muted alarm of the missile telling him there was an infrared lock. He fired it and in a terrifying array of flames and smoke the missile streaked skyward. He saw others had fired as well and thought at least one could have been hit. The cluster bombs were then released and their sub munitions terrorised the hill side sending fragments of hot metal flying everywhere. Luckily their position was about a mile south of it but he was sure that many of his comrades had been killed.

Eastern Kahta

The Red Guard Corporal and his team were now in cover behind a truck that had been blown on it side, the assault was continuing but it seemed the militia had retreated. More reinforcements had come down from the hill and although they were not the same calibre as the Red Guard their numbers would be intimidating nonetheless. They had captured a few of the militiamen and they had talked pretty quickly with a minimum of persuasion and now the structure and numbers of the defending forces was well known. A few militiamen had even defected to the NLA, even more being shot in the process.

A few miles south of the city on the main road and railway that leads to Kahta over 800 Red Guard guerrillas were waiting, and the area was being heavily mined with anti-personnel and anti-tank mines that would hopefully seriously disrupt any attempts to relieve the siege.

"All right, sir, I have the logistical calculations."

"Great. But allow me... just a guess, but we will drop something around 3000 bombs per mission with 60 planes, transported by 12 C-17s to the bombers, who are feuled by two KC-767s each mission. Using unguided bombs this would cost Bonstock approximatly 3 million dollars per full wing raid."

"All right sir. Should we get in the planes?"

"My thoughts exactly. Tell them 12 C-17s loaded with Mk-82 unguided bombs, along with a tanker to fuel them, and another tanker to feul the Stratofortresses. They are based in Taiwan, so that will take approximatly... 4 hours for them to get here, and then 4 hours to load, so a total of 8 hours. We will use a further 4 hours to load and feul the Stratofortresses, and that will total 12 hours. It is 8 in the morning now, so we should be taking off at 2000 hours. Now we need a target... bing me some of the sattelite reconaissence photos."

"Here sir. They say there is a large enemy troop buildup in the hills north of Khata. Motars are firing at friendlies. Also, the same is occuring south of the city, and we see here a large buildup of engineer forces in the south, most likely laying mines and explosives along the main roads. And in the east, the NLA is charging at our forces."

"All right. Identify the southern troop concentration areas. Twenty of the Stratofortresses will go after that. Another 20 will carpet bomb the northern troop concentrations, and the remaining 20 will carpet bomb the eastern sector of the city. Tell friendly forces to evacuate it, along with civilians. And put force protection on full alert. Tell the MPs to send partols out to seek out motars. I will not have another attack destroying our feul!"

"Yes, sir."

Bonstock....what bombs are you dropping?hand-grenades?because 1,000 USD per bomb, WTF?if those are Mk82s, i'd guess their price at about 10,000 USD a piece, then there's alot of fuel and maintainance, spare parts could drive the costs up, then you're supposedly using Wild Weasels, AEWs, EWs and fighter escorts.....

www.GlobalSecurity.org says that the cost of a Mk-82 is about 300 USD... and this does not include maintnece. Also, since B-52s operate so high that they are invulnerable to anything the communists have, I see Wild Weasels as unnecissary. In the beginning of the air campaign, I sent a few, but all the missiles the enemy had were handheld ones that I could not target. I haven't seen the communists use any jamming system, and these are unguided bombs anyway. Something guided (a "smart" bomb), like a JDAM, would be very expensive... but this is dumb carpet bombing.

This is all just a summary of the cost of fuel and bombs for a mission. Maintenence is not included.

Bonstock: We have a pilot down North of Khata and are mounting a rescue mission, could you please postpone your bombing raid until this has been concluded one way or another.

K1 Airfield. Near Mandalay

A claxon sounds all around the based followed by the short announcement, “Immediate Flight Ops CSAR, Repeat, Immediate Flight Ops CSAR, all priorities.”
For the flight crews of the alert Combat Search a Rescue helicopter this means only one thing, a plane had gone down. They run from their barracks, their flight suits already on, to their MH-53 Pave Low. They are from the 17th Air Force Helicopter Squadron (AFHS), the famed ‘Thunder Hunters’ have a reputation for daredevil piloting and always being in the thick of the fighting in order to rescue downed pilots. Also they are the only helicopter squadron that has claim to have been in every Kahtani war since 1958 originally operating the Sikorsky S-58, then the HH-3E ‘Jolly Green Giant’ and now the Pave low IV. Normally they would use two choppers on an operation like this, but as they only had 6 MH-53s in Nimbata and couldn’t afford to have two sitting on the tarmac fuelled and ready waiting for something to happen; they would have to do it with only one.

The Pilot Lt. Colonel Warren climbs into the cockpit, while the co-pilot conducts a brief external inspection of the chopper, he switches on his head set.

“TACOMM, this is Groundhog One One, manned and ready to copy mission information.”

“Roger, Groundhog there is an A-4 down North of Kahta, we have confirmed ejection co-ordinates, transferring now.” Sure enough the co-ordinates of the ejector seat mounted emergency beacon appear on the GPS mission map.

“Confirm, have the data,”

The co-pilot climbs in next to him and fifteen Army combat troops after running across the tarmac start to board from the rear ramp. The Crew speaks into the intercom a minute later, as the rear ramp is closing “Sir Cabin is secure. Good do go.”

“Roger.” The Pilot flicks a switch, “TACOMM, Groundhog One One, ready for start up.”

“Affirmative Groundhog, you have permission to start up and depart straight out, good luck.”

“Roger TACOMM, we’ll need it.”

In the cockpit the two men flick switches and watch dials as the two huge turbo shaft engines start to whine to life, a minute later the rotors start to swing slowly gathering speed. When the RPM reaches a certain amount, the co-pilot gives the thumbs up. Lt Colonel Warren then gradually pulls up the collective and lifts the great beast into the air.
31-08-2003, 23:26
Just under fifty minutes later the Pave low is nearing the area West of Kahta trying to avoid the city itself. As they fly over a few missiles streak upward but flares are fired in quick succession to deflect them.

The Pilot reviews the digital mission map again.

“The ejector seat beacon says we’re only about three miles away; look out for the clearing and some wreckage.” It was difficult to see things through the NVGs but at least it was also harder for the enemy to shoot at them.

The co-pilot sees what they are looking for.

“Sir, there it is, three o’ clock, shit…there are some NLA guys approaching it to.”

In quick response to an order the gunners start to blast away on their miniguns, each firing a terrifying 62 rounds a second. The helicopter swings around and descends as tracer rounds light up the sky and bullets are heard ricocheting off the fuselage.

In the back the crew chief issues instructions to the troops who are waiting to jump out into the fray. “Ok guys get ready soon as we hit turf run straight out, obviously avoid moving around the side of the chopper and getting in the firing line of the miniguns, normal drill find the guy get back in, and remember tail rotor’s on the left, I don’t want anyone getting minced before they even get into combat.”

The helicopter’s gunners had managed to get the NLA soldiers to retreat from the area, their targeting lethal with the thermal imagers and NVGs. The aircraft hovers above the clearing for a few seconds and then the pilot lowers it on to the ground quite sharply. The rear ramp drops and twelve soldiers with M4 Carbines rush out into the long grass, there is only sporadic enemy fire and it seemed to be coming from a distance. They fan out some heading towards the ejector seat in the trees, some in another direction to hunt for the pilot.

The pilot sitting helpless in his cockpit, hating this moment more than any other, sitting here on the ground with the enemy everywhere, worse when there wasn’t a second chopper to cover them.

The pilot who was lying hidden under some bushes presents himself to one of the soldiers, his sidearm empty of rounds and his flight suit tattered. The Army guys escort him back to the chopper and the other group promptly returns after destroying the ejector seat, one of them is being carried after a sniper hit him in the shoulder. The moment the last guy reaches the helicopter, it lifts off in a storm of dust and tracer fire, and climbs quickly before turning for Mandalay. Chalking up another successful mission for the ‘Thunder Hunters’

The government of Tom Joad has reached its limit the ongoing killing and massive slaughter on both sides has prompted it to order me to withdraw from the area and return to port.

I cannot properly express my dissapointment in all leaders involved, who having so eagerly engaged in war and proclaimed their right to do so yet have been so obstinate in attempting peace talks, I hope for your sake that this war does not spread not that any of you deserve such a mercy.

Western Front - Katha

1 of Ferrussia's new EA-70 battlefield survailiance planes circled about in the sky, watching the advancing enemies of both fronts. Well away from the conflict, it safely relayed information to one of the recieving vehicles at FLOCOM-Katha. It had been flown in earlier that day, and was finally avaliable to the Ferrussian commanders, generals, and strategists. More importantly, it now negated the need for radio reports of enemy positions for the artillery. They had been going on and off now for the last few hours, and the crucial information on enemy positions was being relayed to FLOCOM-Katha. Already, the most effective areas to strike were being planned out, and the artillery got to work, particularly on enemy mortar positions.

The Ferrussian line waited in silence, crouched in windows and behind tables. All guns were trained down the roads. Somebody tapped the man next to him as he saw something. He saw it too.

An enemy soldier.

Somebody whispered into the radio. "Requesting permission to fire, we have an enemy in sight."

"Granted," came the reply. "Fire at will."

The radio operator nodded to the men. They aimed...

And fired. Several shots rang out, and the man fell to the ground. There would soon be many more.

The incessant rumblings of artillery and mortar continued in the background. Less than a minute after the first man, waves of enemy soldiers began to come down the streets. M16A2s, S1A3, and some mounted machine gun positions opened up on the enemy forces, while mortars lent support against troops further back. The line seemed to be holding well, and any wounded were quickly taken back to one of several hospitals which were set up further inside the city. The few killed were taken into the city, where their bodies were evacuated by helicopter.

15 minutes into the fighting, 13 were wounded and 4 killed. (OOC: Nimbata, please post the approximate number currently assaulting along the western front, so I can more accurately estimate casualties.)

The artillery and mortars weren't the only thing supporting the defense of western and northern Katha, though. A-14s began to make flyovers at a medium altitude - high enough that they didn't have to cross far over to the enemy side to drop their dumb bombs. They each carried 8 CBU-58 (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/cbu-58.htm) incindiary cluster bombs, and dropped them a few blocks back from the line. The bombed-out west end of the city was soon alight with flames as the anti-personnel bombs did their thing. Each A-14 also carried 3 IR flares, making NVGs much more effective.

14 A-14s were initially deployed, bringing to bear 112 CBU-58s. The planes circled over the friendly-controlled areas of the city and struck any time a grouping of enemy soldiers was identified by the EA-70s or ground forces. Some were dropped on areas of uncontrolled Katha where enemies seemed to go through the most, (hopefully) devastating the remainder of the attack force. For the time being, no additonal air support was predicted necessary, and the A-14s headed back to the Namhkan airbase.

Status report for the Northern Katha forces:

Nimbatan militia continues to be slowly but surely driven back by fierce attacks. Enemy soldiers have gained footholds in the outlying areas of the city, however the offensive is being somewhat quelled by the artillery and firebomb (see above) strikes on the open NLA advancement. Ferrussia does not know the extent of militia casualties, but wounded are being brought back to Ferrussian Military hospitals within the city. FLOCOM-Katha is not anticipating that the NLA will reach the Ferrussian lines tonight, unless the offensive continues through the night hours (in which case, defending Ferrussian soldiers will slowly, piece by piece, be replaced by fresh troops from the city. About 2/3 of all Ferrussian soldiers are deployed on the front lines, leaving 1/3 in the city for relief of fatigued/wounded soldiers on both fronts).

OOC: Please RP whether you drive on during the night, or your assault stops until morning (on both fronts). Lets say its... oh, 9:30 pm right now.
02-09-2003, 16:40
OOC:

Numbers attacking approximate: (now not when it started.)

Eastern Front: 1,000 Red Guard
6,500 NLA Regulars
+2,000 reinforcements arriving tonight

Northern Front:
600 Red Guard
3,800 NLA regulars
+ +1,600 reinforcements arriving tonight

IC

Western Front, Katha:

The Firebombs had taken a terrible toll but luckliy the troops at the frontline were simply too far into the city to bomb or shell.
The fighting had been sporadic during the day but tonight they would assault again on both front with a few fresh soldiers also joining the battle. It was clear that as the morale of the militia fell, the fight was getting easier.

During the day buidlings nearer and nearer the Ferrussians had been occupied, operating as firebases for snipers and machinegunners. The Red Guard commanders were also confident that enemy reinforcements woud be near impossible to bring in giveen that the Southern road and rail lines had been mined and guerillas wee waiting. Unfortunately their mortars had been mostly silenced as they were taken out quickly as soon as they fired but finnally a new shipment of RPG-7s and Strela SAMs almost made up for it.

Northern Front

Similarly the Northern front was also preparing for a night assault at 11:20PM, although they had fewer men and were facing more opposition. Their foothold in the city itself was more of a toehold with only a few blocks under NLA control, the hills also were under nearly constant attack and reinforcements had been limited to mainly just infantry. IF they launched teir assault simultanesly though there was a considerable chance that the Ferrussians would be overwhelmed finally.

70 Miles NW of Shwebo, Sagaing Division

The group of Red Guard had been advancing most of the day through the jungle towards Mandalay still many days away. It was when just after dusk one of the forward scouts saw through his binoculars one of the Kahtani outposts on a hill overlooking the jungle that the plan had to change.

A few snipers were to quietly probe forward and gather intelligence while the rest of the team prepared the assault. They divided into two groups one to attack from the North and one to attack from the West. In a typical Red Guard style attack it was going to be supported by mortar fire and involve massive waves that would hopefully break through the enemy lines.
02-09-2003, 18:42
Outpost 3, Sagaing Division

(FYI an outpost is normally manned by 40-50 troops and consists of a few wooden structures covered in Earth and sandbags surrounded by a trench, there are 4 wood pillboxes one on each corner of the trench and there are several rings of barbed wire surrounding it. The hill it is on has been burnt of any trees to allow clear sight for about 120 yards in all directions.)

The four watchmen on the Northern side of the base where not particularly alert that night but the soldier who was manning the 50 calibre on the pillbox was suspicious; he’d not seen or heard anything but he felt nervous. He switched on his radio and called back to the three men who were on watch next to the mortars which were on top of the helipad.
“Hey I need some illumination on the North.”
“Sure thing, coming up.”

A minute or so later one of the mortars fired and a bright white light shot upwards and then drifted down. The soldier saw to his horror the Red Guard just in the tree line preparing to assault the outpost. He quickly hit the alarm which sent a low pitched noise throughout the tiny garrison. Just before he was going to start firing a sniper round struck his forehead.

As the alarm sounded men started appearing from little dugouts that served as sleeping quarters rushed to their assigned defence position grabbing a rifle and ammo on the way out.

In the small command structure the duty officer a sergeant who sat behind a wooden desk surrounded by radios and maps was getting reports in from other parts of the base and called on the radio to another duty officer in Mandalay.

“This is KOP (Kahtani Outpost) 3, under attack require immediate support, heavily outnumbered.”

“Roger KOP 3, standby.” A couple of minutes went by then a very short of breath voice came back on the line: “Okay, TACOMM has five Army slicks are headed your way, ETA less than thirty five minutes, can you hold ‘til then?”

“That’s affirmative we’ll do our best.”

FLOCOM-Katha -- 9:35 pm

FCCH in Mandalay had finally approved the move. It was a risky one, they knew, but hopefully it'd be worth it. Operation Cloak and Operation Dagger were underway.

The 58 Mandalay-based A-14 Warthogs were prepped. They took off from Mandalay as soon as they had the fuel and munitions they would need, and flew (high altitude) to Namhkan airbase. The 14 stationed there took off as well, as the rest landed for a quick refuel. Soon all the A-14s were ready, and the 72 planes flew into Katha from the east.

In the meantime, Ferrussian vehicles in Katha had been readying for the mission as well. Not too many enemy soldiers had attacked directly, most began setting up base as close as they could to the Ferrussian line. Most were a few blocks down, holed up in buildings. The defensive troops had seen which buildings had been commandereed by the NLA, and were busy radioing the exact GPS coordinates of all buildings that contained rebels within about 5 blocks of the line.

*****

At 10:52 pm, FLOCOM initiated Operation Cloak. The 2 EA-70s were busy relaying coordinates for strikes, and the A-14s began to head towards the enemy lines. They would be dropping bombs on all enemy-occupied buildings, as well as major areas of enemy concentration/traffic. Some of the buildings were as close as 2 blocks from the Ferrussian lines, but this did not phaze the pilots: they were fully capable of delivering support literally within yards of friendly forces. Each of the 72 planes carried 12 Mk-82 500lb bombs (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/mk82.htm), 2 IR flares (which would significantly improve Night Vision capabilities on the ground and in the air), and a pod of countermeasure flares.

At precisely 11:00 pm, the massive anti-personnel bombing raid began, with several buildings near the Ferrusian line exploding in firey bursts. They were the first of almost 864 bombs that would be dropped in the next 5-10 minutes.

Operation Dagger was now to begin. As the bombs began to fall deeper into the NLA-controlled section, 175 M113s (carrying 11 men each - 10 w/M16A2s, 1 w/S5A3 Mounted MGs) and 200 Humvees (carrying 3 each w/S1A3 ARs) accompanied by 100 Merkava V Urban-fighting tanks began driving into the bomb-devastated ruins, shooting at anyone that moved. In the dark, they had a significant advantage over the NLA troops - night vision. Often times, they could see (and shoot) the soldiers before they knew that the vehicles were there.

They advanced into the enemy territory, mopping up the occasional soldiers who hadn't been in a bombed building or had survived a hit. Artillery was continually aiming further and further back towards the outskirts of the city, always keeping a good 150-200 meters in front of the advance.

The armed vehicles worked their way back, until they started hitting more resistance. (I'll stop here so you can RP a response)

The A-14s, after dropping their entire load, head back to the Namhkan airbase. They can refuel and reload quite quickly, and FLOCOM is expecting them to begin returning in about 45 min. to an hour.

Northern Front update

Militia forces are currently holding out, still a few miles out from the Ferrussian line. Mortar and some artillery are bombarding the hills and the "toehold" of NLA forces with all they can muster, and over 350 of the 81mm mortars are working on them from behind the Ferrussian defenses. (OOC: You don't know this, but now the northern front has more people in the entrenched defense role than on the Western front, however, the strike team controls enough of the area to prevent a major counter-counter attack into the western side of the city for the time being.)

(BTW, how developed is the area? Paved roads? 3/5-story buildings? Or dirt roads and bamboo shanties? I've been assuming it's moderately developed, with brick buildings, paved (but narrow) roads, and short 3-story buildings.)

Moscow is watching with interest as this battle continues, and the military is rumored to be planning a major reinforcement of the area, depending on how well this battle goes. Reinforcements will be brought to full alert status in the morning, and should be able to be deployed to Nimbata within about 5 hours notice. The military is reviewing the situation, and trying to determine what is needed most at the moment.

What is an A-14? and if you were do drop dumb bombs in such an urban enviroment and near allied troops you would almost certainly have civilian casualties as well as friendly fire incidents.

IC;

Katha

The offensive had more or less ceased, the troops in the West were retreating and the in the North there was a bitter stalemate. After the armoured and aerial attacks a decision had been made to retreat out of the city until reinforcements could be brought down. The new plan was to retreat in the jungle and wait for the Ferrusian counter attack which would almost certainly come as the city was surronded and they would need to break out eventually. This enviroment would suit their guerilla fighting style and give the NLA an advantage it lacked in a conventional urban assault against a far more technologically advanced enemy. The death toll of the NLA assault on the city is being placed at over 7,000 in total.

Surrounding Outpost 3, Sagiang division

(You have to assume that this is happening just after Kahtans last post)

The Red Guard troops were not expecting the Kahtanis to detect them before they were assaulting and it made a crucial difference to the plan. Seeing as they had a number advantage they were going to instead of charging up the hill at the machinegun positions, stay just in the treeline putting down heavy and direct fire on the defending troops. When the defenders were reduced in number they would then charge hopefully swiftly overwhelming them and forcing a surrender.

Outpost 3, Saigang Division

The 5 UH-1N Twin Tueys of the 7th Air Cavalry fly in formation just above the jungle canopy, their M60 Machine guns spewing out tracer rounds. The outpost comes into sight, and one by one the helicopters line up to approach the Landing Pad which is a patch of woden boards in the middle of the base. Metal pings as bullets hit the choppers and the men inside shoot back with their M-16s.

The First 'slick' touches down and 10 men jump out carrying ammo boxes and M203s. Several soldiers rush towards the helciopter and push in a stretcher. The Chopper goes to full power and lifts off. Several more choppers do the same and then the fifth approaches, touches down and lifts off, but seconds after an RPG streaks skyward from a position several hundred yards away and slams into the tail rotor, firstly the helicopter seems unaffected and flies for about half a mile but then the huey starts to spin uncontrolably earthward. It hits the jungle canopy before falling the rest of the way to the ground, the fueselage being ripped to shreds by the trees during the process.

The 50 or so fresh Air Cav troops are immediately directed to the perimeter trench and medics try hard to cope with the casualties that were mounting.

Insicde the Command Office, Outpost 3

The CO was now in the tiny room and discussing options with thet wo other officers.

"How long can we hold out?"

"Sir, the firepower we're recieveing is terrible, its only a matter of time before they assault and we'd be doomed. Theyre simply too many of them, having fifty more troops will help a lot though."

Somembody enters in a hurry, "Sir the last slick just went down in the trees! On its way out."

"Holy shit... But There's no way we can do anything for them, if anyone survived. Somebody get on the horn and get us some Cobras... right now we have to concentrate on staying alive."
03-09-2003, 22:20
Surrounding Outpost 3, Sagaing division

A detachment of Red Guard was now heading through the jungle to the huey crash site, in the hope of capturing any of the crew left alive.

Surrounding the outpost the fight was becoming more bloody as more troops had arrived on both sides. The mortars were now firing smoke rounds to through the enemy into confusion while they prepared to charge forward, over 100 men would lead the charge and if it looked successful more would join it, otherwise they would just stay back providing intensive covering fire with machineguns and rifle grenades.

OOC: The A-14 (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=63504) (scroll down) is basically a moderately upgraded A-10 Thunderbolt II. The A-10 (and the A-14) is speicifically designed for close air support and can fly under 1,000 ft. They have an HUD (heads-up display) that constantly calculates where a dumb bomb will land (giving coordinates, I believe), and the EA-70s were giving them constant coordinates as to where they were bombing and where the nearest friendlies were. So a low speed aircraft, with a system (I believe called a LASTE) that computes where freefall ordinance will land, operating easily under 1,000 ft, and being fed positions of targets and friendlies could easily accomplish the mission, which was bombing enemy buildings that were 2 blocks away.

Sorry for the rant, just wanted to show I didn't pull this out of nowhere. I've got links, if you want, that cite the A-10 as being able to hit targets safely that are within yards of friendly positions.

IC:

Western front, Katha

The M113s and Humvees drove the rebels into the hills, stopping a block or two from the edge of the city. Several of the commanders were honestly suprised that they had accomplished this so quickly, however some of the more experienced commanders knew that they were falling back for the protection of the hills. Guerilla troops in guerilla territory. Just fabulous.

The assault would not be now. In the meantime, however, the Ferrussians began the task of moving their defenses forward to the new perimeter. Some of the APCs were set to this task, and some soldiers even hitched rides on the tanks, which were also moving forward. Supplies were just now starting to get a little low, but there was still enough for the time being. Orders were sent to FCCH to try and get additional supplies, particularly ammunition, in. FCCH said they'd work on it.

It was 11:32 now, and a few stray documents that had not been picked up by fleeing enemy officers brought interesting information: the enemy had been planning an assault at 11:20, just a matter of minutes after the Ferrussian one began. FLOCOM considered themselves lucky, in a way. They had driven some of the attackers into the hills and thwarted the attack, but at the same time taken the battle to their home turf. This wouldn't be easy.

Ferrussian casualties thus far: 187. 42 of those are deaths. Ferrussian defenses are holing in for the night. Shifts will be taken on the guards, with two men for every 10 guarding. They have NVGs, and the EA-70s will be flying round-the clock, also watching for any enemy attack. If one is seen, everyone will be radioed. Half of the Crusaders will continue the artillery bombardment of the hills, with half the crews resting while the other half bombard. FCCH and FLOCOM-Katha are figuring out a schedule for airial bombardments, and the Nimbatan government is being contacted to see if firebombings will be allowed in the forested hills.

-Official Release of the Ministry of Defence, Sultanate of Kahtan-

"The civil war in Nimbata has in the last few days resulted in many casualties for the Nimbatan military and militias, our Ferrussian allies and our very own serviceman.

The attack at Outpost 3 killed 48 members of Royal Kahatni Army and 4 members of the Royal Kahtani Army Air Corps. The outpost has since been evacuated and this tragic event has been a stark warning that the threat of the NLA continues and they are a deadly and fanatical force lacking any sense of morality or honour. The Sultan has today been meeting with senior Ministers and military officials and they have decided upon a course of action, which involves commitment of a much larger force that will hopefully force the NLA onto the defensive.

The Royal kahtani Air Force has had considerable success in operation 'Night Thunder' destroying many targets in and around the city of Myitkina. Sadly seven aircraft were lost in this raid and the fate of the piots is unknown. "

OOC: Sorry for not following up on this war, sorta was preoccupied with other stuff at the moment.

IC: After seeing the gruesome videotape of the execution of the RTAF and Kathani pilot, the Republic of Tradewinds condemns these acts used on POWs and will not pull out of Nimbata until peace between the NLA and government is sought.

The RTAF is calling upon the 3rd Bombardment Wing and its PEA-12 bombers to prepare for possible bombing of targets that belong to the NLA and its allies. The RTSOF (Republic of Tradewinds Special Operations Force) is also calling upon more Scout Rangers Divisions to Nimbata along with regular infantry.

The 26th and 48th Rifle Divisions ex Nimbatan Army had been marching towards the city for days, their total strength over 18,000 and they were going to be backed up by Red Guard and artillery as well.

Spread out and advancing they knew that this was a battle thry could win, in theory the numbers were on their side and this was not going to be a repeat of Kahta, where their comrades were hiding the jungle preparing to defend themselves.

In the jungle North and West of Mandalay some 2,400 troops from 2nd Battallion, 1st Light Infantry Regiment are now probing in small groups in the hope of curtailing the NLA infiltration into the South.
It is hoped with helicopters on constant cal and J-STARS patrolling, they will have an edge over the enemy.

The Royal Kahtani NAvy also wishes to inform the Rangoon port authorities that a task group of three EM-90 Sealift ships, two EM-80 Combat Support Vessels and two Austin class landing ships will be docking tonight escorted by two Type 42 destroyers and four Type 23 Frigates. The Frigates will not however enter Port. It is vital that these ships be able to safely unload their critical supplies of some 1,100 Royal Marine Commandos along with tanks, armored vehicles and additional helicopters.

Port of Rangoon

The 40ft powerboat from the Maritime Security Department patrolled u and down at low speeds protecting one of theType 42 destroyers as it slowly cruised into the Port.

There were four crew, one driveing, one on a pintle mountd MG at the stern and two tpwards the bow wth AKs. There was a strong wind and it was causing quite a swell in the murky, muddy waters of the Irrawady and their searchlight was needed in the moonles night.

One of the crew men dissappeared below into the tiny forward cabin. Of course they werent actually from the MSD but from a fanatical group calling itself the Red Brigade. Getting hold of the boat an uniforms had been easy and now they were going to once again hit the enemy where it hurt.

The man reappeared after checking over the inordinate amounts of TNT that were in the cabin and nodded to the Captain. They then changed course andcrept nearer te Kahtani warship, still preenting friendly intentions. Abou a hundred yards away he shouted and the three other men threw themselves overboard with life preservers and the acptain hit full throttle and prepared to ram the destroyer.

At alomost thirty five knots there was nothing that could be done, obvously somebody had realised and tracer rounds were now zipping across into the water but missing their target...

In the skies behind Namhkam

The tired EA-70 pilot looked at his watch, then the fuel guage.

Is it that late already? We better call it a day, we'll need the plane ready tomorrow morning... He yawned.

"Let's head in, boys," he said.

The radar operator looked over at him, then at his watch. "Just a few more minutes," he said.

The pilot sighed. "Alright. Five minutes, and we're homeward bound."

A minute or so of the awkward pseudo-silence of the JSTARS plane passed, when a small buzzer went off.

The radar operator gazed at the panels. "I've got some in-and-out signals... it's looking like... CRAP! We've got enemy forces less than 12 miles from Namhkam! The jungle was hiding their signatures for a while, and we're too far back from the city to have seen them in the open! Radio FLOCOM-Namhkam and FCCH, we need some U-3s out here!"

The action brought everyone back from the lull of inactivity. The invasion of Namhkam was too close for comfort.

"FCCH this is Starview-2, we're reading sketchy enemy targets in the forest north and west of Namhkam, coordinates X70328, G21403. Suggest deployment of U-3s and more JSTARS. Please contact FLOCOM-Namhkam and let them know they have company!"

The call sent ripples of action through FCCH and FLOCOM-Namhkam. Everyone had seen how Katha could have gone either way, and though they had pulled it off well, supplying two fronts with air cover, ammunition, and supplies was not going to be easy.

The A-14s were brought to standby, and one or two U3 spyplanes made passes over the enemy positions, looking for formations, important targets, and supply lines. The thousands of photos would quickly be analyzed at FCCH, looking for weaknesses in the enemy's invasion.

Forces in Namhkam are still on high alert, and Kahta-based forces haven't changed much. The Militia is holding the northern front.

Port of Rangoon, Bridge of Destroyer Audacity

The Captain and several other crew members were on the floor of the bridge, thick black smoke billowed everywhere and the emergency lighting had failed. There wsas te terrifying sounds of bulkheads breaking and metal tearing and cloud claxons could were barely audible after the explosion had temporariliy deafened them.

The glass had shattered everywhere and the hship seemed to have started to list hard to Port. The Captain hauled himself to his feet ignoring the shards of glass and metal that had showered his body.

The sound powere dphone might work and he groped in the dark for it while trying to breathe, "Conn, Damage Control?"

“Yessir, we have flooding and/or fire in five compartments and we are listing to Starboard, sir we have many dead and wounded and we need to abandon ship. I doubt she’ll sink but we need to evacuate now.”

“Roger.” He hung up the receiver then paused for a second before finding the abandon ship alarms and activating them, they had a lot of nerve to do this and they were going to pay for it…somehow.

Namhkam Airfield

Claxons buzzed and ground crew rushed around, driving fuel trucks or pushing bomb trolleys, the pilots were one by one arriving from their barracks and soon at least twelve of the Navy harriers would be ready to go.

Inside the city soldiers were rushing to their defence stations, manning the machinegun positions on street corners and in windows. Civilians were being told to clear the streets. The Kahtani soldiers had yet to be told the size of the force that was bearing down on them, but hearing of the fate of the Audacity gave them plenty of reasons to want to kill and if possible slaughter.

North West of Namkham

The forward elements of the assault were rapidly approaching the edges of the jungle only five miles from the city and preparations for the assault were complete.
The initial assault would be just before dark and involve some 7,000 soldiers. First of all however was to be the artillery strike which would no doubt escalate the conflict beyond comprehension and hopefully scare the allies and the government into retreat.

The 29 China Type 66 152mm howitzers were lined up on a road about nine miles from the city centre. they had just been pulled into position from the treeline to avoid being seen and attacked by aircraft.

A few old trucks were also on hand and the artilleymen were unloading shells that were painted yellow and marked in crude writing ''Chlorine gas' (http://www.bt.cdc.gov/agent/chlorine/basics/facts.asp) with a chemical warning symbol.

A few minutes later and the soldiers were preparing to fire their rounds, four chemical rounds per gun at the city, some were aimed at the centre and others at the airfield.

None of them were wearing chemical protection gear and provided nothing leaked they'd be safe from it.

Two red flares rose up from the front line, indicating they were ready and the wind wasgoing away from them, the commander gave the order.

One by one the guns fired and men raced to reload and fire again.

“Incoming Artillery, Incoming Artillery, all personnel to defence positions.”
The monotone voice of a sergeant on the public address sent the base into ordered panic. Men rushed to their defence positions, grabbing rifles and helmets. A couple of shells impacted nearby but no earth shaking explosions came. There was muted silence for a second as nobody knew what had happened.

After a minute or so another announcement comes, this time more panicked, “Gas, Gas, Gas.” Although all Kahtani soldiers have NBC kits as standard gear, few of them had it with them. People rushed back to their barracks to retrieve it but a green haze had already started to drift over and the first troops started to be affected. The commanding officer in the officers’ mess had been immediately given a gas mask and he started to contact FLOCOM or Kahtani troops in the city itself, but suddenly realising they were under fire to. He could only imagine the military casualties never mind the civilians who had no chemical training or equipment.

FLOCOM-Namhkam

The first shell hit just as the Firefinder radar reports began to come in of artillery fire. One of the radio operators looked out the window towards the intersection a block away where the shell had hit.

"Someone come here! What the-"

One of the analysts came over. "What? It's just arti-" He froze as he saw the dense greenish-yellow cloud where the shell had hit. "Oh, oh my-... this can't be happening... guys, these shells are chemical!"

Men looked up from their duties, and for a second the place went dead silent. Suddenly, a few of the men, most of whom had been former soldiers before being promoted to command, went for the door.

The analyst stopped them by the door. "What are you guys doing? You can't go out there! The gas will be here in minutes!"

Just then, another shell landed on the building next door.

"We're going to get the chem. suits. They're stored a block north in the supply warehouse," said one of the men. He walked out the double glass doors. The others followed him.

"No, you- you can't! Wait!"

It was no use, they were already running to the supply warehouse just down the street.

The analyst, shaking, looked out the window agian. The greenish gas had begun to seep out the door of the building that had been hit. His mind reeled, and then he remembered.

"It's chlorine gas! We need to get higher! Get upstairs, everybody! NOW!"

They began to run upstairs, leaving the radios unattended. Suddenly, one of the radio operators realized they needed to contact someone. He ran back down, shrugging off yells from his fellow men. Grabbing the nearest radio, he turned to the general channel.

"All units, all units, this is FLOCOM-Namhkam. We are under chemical attack via artillery, chlorine gas. Please get to high ground if you do not have chemical protection. We will have assistance as soon as possible, over."

He changed channels to contact FCCH.

"FCCH, this is FLOCOM-Namhkam, we are under chemical artillery attack, chlorine gas. Repeat, we are under chemical artillery attack! We're going to get hit soon, get those air strikes in NOW! We'll need more chem suits ASAP! Over!"

"Holy- are you serious!? Holy crap..."

The man looked over at the doors, where chlorine gas was seeping under the door. Where are the others?

"No time to chat, just get on it!"

He changed to the artillery.

"We're getting hit with chemical artillery, we need heavy fire at coordinates..." he glanced at the monitor next to him, where the FireFinder radar was triangulating the position of the enemy artillery. Numbers began to appear on the screen. "X73481, G20817. You guys have chemical protection in there, right?"

"Roger, and yes we do. How're things down there?"

"Don't ask. Hit 'em hard."

"Roger that. Sons of a *****, chemical artillery?"

He didn't reply, because he looked out the door through the green haze to see those who had left for the chem suits. Dropping the reciever, he ran to the door. They were all carrying as many chem suits as they could, and occasionally held a mask up to their face to breathe.

He opened the door, calling for others to come down. Dragging the first two in the door and supporting them on either side of him, he couldn't help but ask.

"Why on earth didn't you put on the chem suits?"

"No time," replied one of them. "We had to get enough..." He began hacking, and then the radio operator looked at the man's skin. It was covered in huge blisters and boils.

Some of the others came down, and helped the rest of the brave men inside. Not that it was much use, the whole room was now filled with the greenish haze. They hurried upstairs and began to distribute the chem suits as quickly as possible.

Radio operators ran back downstairs, and began to synchronize chem suit deliveries to the supply truck drivers who hadn't been at the supply warehouse when the artillery hit. Then they would take them to the nearest troops. Others got to work figuring out where else had been hit.

Over one of the radios came the Namhkam Airfield. "Repeat, *cough* this is *cough* Namhkam Airfield, is anyone there? *cough*"

"Copy, this is FLOCOM-Namhkam," said the operator through the chem suit mask, with some difficulty. "You guys are hit, too?"

"Roger," was all the man got off before he began hacking loudly through the radio.

"We're sending medical assistance now, just hold on, okay?" He looked at the whiteboard where medical requests were. It was already unbearably long. He wrote "High priority - Namhkam Airfield" on the bottom of the list, and others came over to write yet more. Reports were flooding in from all over the city, but it would have been worse if the radio operator had not warned everyone to get higher.

The operator collapsed, tormented by the horror of their situation. Before he could sob, one of the others grabbed him and pulled him up.

"We've got work to do."

And so they did.

In the command building the few men with gas masks were manning the radios and hopefully medical help was on the way. A corpsman had appeared a few minutes before and himself coughing and spluttering had reported that over 100 men had so far been seen to be affected and at least two confirmed dead. Apparently NBC gear had been stored in the medical buidling and a few doctors had been treating casualties with oxygen and water but they were short staffed and overwhelmed.

Lucklily some choppers from Mandalay were to bring some chemical gear and medics as well as to evacuate casualties.
The Comander's mind was quickly starting to turn to the battle and knew that something had to be done quick and major since the airbase was out of commission for the moment and if the NLA assaulted them now they would be done for.

He spoke into the radio himself.

"TACOMM, Namkham, standby for mission request." He glanced down at a map and circled an area with red pen.

"Roger.Standing by."

"Special Weapons proword 'Instant Moonlight' co-ordinates X73481, G20817, repeat special Weapons release order 'Instant Moonlight' co-ordinates X73481, G20817."

"Sir! 'instant moonlight'?!"

"Logistics said to bring it to you, because we don't have any more."

Kalishnov swore. "Kid, you got any immediate duties?"

"No sir."

"Then get all the commanders in my tent in five minutes, okay? I want everyone - Air Force, Logistics, Communications, everyone!"

"Yessir! Right away!" The messenger ran out of the tent.

Kalishnov walked over to his personal tent. He cleared off the folding table, set up some chairs, and laid down on his cot. For five minutes, he tried to forget everything. This blasted war, communists, chlorine gas, and the few forces at his command.

It didn't work.

At precisely 1804 hours, the major commanders of every army and air force section deployed in Nimbata arrived in Kalishnov's tent. They took seats around the table, and the General got up from his cot to stand at the head of the table.

As he was about to start, the messenger he had sent out came in, carrying a laptop with a webcam.

"What on earth is that for?" asked Kalishnov.

"Sir, I've got Field Generals Zaibowski and Petranov on streaming video," he replied.

Kalishnov stared at him for a second.

"You said everybody, sir."

"Yes I did," replied Kalishnov. "What's your name?"

"Private First Class Piotr Manaski reporting, sir," he replied with a salute.

"Piotr, tell your CO that you've been promoted to Personal Aide to the General, and that if he has any problems, he can talk to me."

"Yessir," said Manaski, masking a slight smile. He walked out of the tent.

Kalishnov turned his attention to the officers before him. "You're probably wondering why I've called you all here. This command is in chaos right now, and it's time something be done about it. I need to know our current position on everything right now. Air Force!"

The startled commander sat abruptly upright. "Sir, our A-14s and crews are fortunately all intact. The strike came between one group of planes leaving and another landing, so only the ground crews have been affected. All of the planes are now headed back towards the base here in Mandalay. About 56 of the A-14s are already here."

"We need air strikes on the rebel positions NOW," said Kalishnov. "I want you to organize a full-blown air strike on NLA forces outside of Namhkam, and start planning an extensive series of demoralizing surgical strikes on the Katha area. See what a couple Daisy Cutters do for their morale. Also, talk to Moscow and get some more planes here! We need to take full advantage of our arial superiority. Namhkam!"

Field General Zaibowski, via the laptop, began. "Sir, most of our defensive positions have been remanned, and the gas is subsiding. Some of the less important areas of the line are still huddled upstairs for lack of chemical suits, but within an hour or two they should be fine. From the reports we're getting, we're highly outnumbered, but Katha showed that we've got the upper hand in the city. I'm hesitant to order an attack for that very reason, but if they strike all at once, it'll take everything we've got to stop them taking over the city."

Kalishnov thought for a moment. "I'll talk to Moscow and see what we can get in the order of reinforcements. In the mean time, sit tight, but make sure you're ready for a siege or an assault, whatever comes. Katha!"

"We're not experiencing any troubles, sir. Most of the northern attack has been repelled back into the hills, and the rest is secure. However, they're not just going to sit there forever, and in the meantime we're starting to run low on supplies. We need to organize some sort of assault, and soon, or else draw them out into the city."

"We can try and make some airdrops of supplies," said Kalishnov. "Can you guys hold out another day?"

"Yes, we can," came the reply.

"Very well. Logistics!"

"We're doing fine in Namhkam, and if we start instituting airdrops with the C-130s over Katha, they should be fine as well. We need to call in more arial support from back home, though. We've got a lot of tools to use, but none of them are here. The air is soon going to be our only link to both cities, and the rebels are going to give everthing they've got to getting us out of these two cities. If they fall, we'll be getting attacks here in Mandalay in a matter of days, and the whole country could be overrun."

"You know we can't let that happen," said Kalishnov. "Work with the Air Force, get anything and everything you could possibly need over the next week here by tomorrow morning. I want radar suppression, JSTARS, everything possible in Mandalay by tomorrow. Got it? Communications!"

"Everythings fine here, sir. We're keeping open links with everyone, but there's quite a bit of stress on the radio operators."

"Call in more boys from home if you need to, then," said Kalishnov. "Diplomacy!"

"Our liasons with Kahtan are working 'round the clock. They're doing what they can to take out the enemy artillery, but for the time being, the chemical bombardment has stopped."

"Give the Kahtanis everything we've got. Intel, forces, you name it. The surest way to lose this war is to not communicate and coordinate. Tell them our artillery will take care of theirs, so we need both our air forces to combine efforts and bomb the crap out of these rebels. They wouldn't go wasting chemical munitions if they weren't going to strike, so they're going to hit hard, and they're going to hit tonight. We've got to do everything in our power to keep them from doing that. Bombings, mines, you name it. They outnumber us hopelessly right now, and if we stave off the main assault until we get reinforcements in there, we're going to be bringing home a lot of coffins. Logistics! Give the Namhkam soldiers double rations tonight."

Both the officers nodded.

"I believe that's everything. Tell Moscow we need everything we can get, and we need it now. I think," said Kalishnov, "that this is going to decide the war."

With that, the meeting ended, and the General looked at his watch as the officers departed. Two hours to sunset.

Lord help us, he thought.

[OOC: I'll post the extent of the air strikes tomorrow; it's really late right now. But man, this thing is kicking into high gear! :) (Sorry for these dreadfully long posts... I tend to write and get carried away...)]

Just West of Namkham

The MC-130E Special Mission transport plane had taken off forty minutes eariler about an hour after the 'Instant moonlight' request had come in. They flew at about 11,000ft straight toward their target.

"Okay four miles to drop zone, give the signal to prepare."

"Roger Captain."

In the cargo hold the long orange cylinder took up most of the space and there were only two other people on the plane. The red light on a display mounted on the ceiling changed to amber and they made last preparations to the weapon never used by the Kahtani armed forces except in tests.

The crew chief then pulled a lever and the rear ramp started to drop exposing the cabin to the loud droning of the four turboprops. He then pressed a switch and the huge bomb slid rearward to the very back just before the ramp.

The pilot continually checked the GPS display and then radioed.

"TACOMM, Victor Sierra Whiskey, two miles, requesting permission 'Instant Moonlight'."

"Sierra Whiskey, permission granted, good luck."

"Roger TACOMM."

A minute or so later and the GPS bleeped. He hit a switch.

In the light in the cabin then changed from amber to green and emiitted a high pitched alarm. The crew chief then methodically flicked several switches on the control console, the weapon then slid back on its mounting and fell out of the back of the plane.

As the MC-130 ascended shaprly after the oloss in weight the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/affacts/blmoab.htm) munition was on its way to the target and its satellite guidance was going to place it directly on the road where the artillery was destroying everything within a half mile radius and hopefully burining up any remaining chemcial weapons.

Headquarters of the 2nd Liberation Army, Bhamo, Shan State

General Kok Yean Chooi entered as usual his olive unifrom beautfiully pristine , his medals, mostly from the civil war of the 1970s when the communists had crushed a rebellon in Sittwe were also freshly polished.

"You called?" He asked the colonel

"Comrade General we have heard reports of a huge bomb being dropped on back line positions outside Nakham, artillery all destroyed."

"Damn it!" he walked over to the map and spent a few minutes being briefed by the Colonel. "Okay here's what we do,." draiwng lines on the map. "Tonight we swing round to the South and attack the airbase, one because its not as heavily defended and two it will pevent them from brining n supplies or launching air strikes from there if we assault it. I want to hit them with everything we have,."

"yes Comrade General it shall be organised."

We have watched with growing horror the devastating civil war in Nimbata. Through communications with a friendly nation,we have learned that communist rebels are attempting to overthrow the freely elected government. We regret that we were not able to respond sooner, due to a nationwide defense computer network failure that forced us to bring all forces immediately home post haste, lest we be attacked during a time of vulnerability. Now that we have the technical issues straightened out, we are willing to commit naval and land forces of necessary size to support coalition efforts to restore the elected government to power and put down the communist rebellion. We await your reply.

Ministry of Defence Press Briefing Room

“Ladies and Gentleman, unfortunately our forces in Nimbata have taken further casualties following a chlorine gas artillery attack several hours ago on our troops defending the city of Namkham. Currently we have no confirmation at the number of fatalities but we have approximately 700 troops in the city centre and a further 600 stationed at the airfield. The Air Force promptly responded to requests from commanders on the ground and dropped a single Massive Ordnance Air Blast weapon equivalent to around 21,000lb of high explosive obliterating a huge area of jungle where the artillery was thought to have been located.

We have also now confirmed the number of deaths following the attack on the Type 42 destroyer RKV Audacity as 67. The ship itself has partially sunk in the Port of Rangoon but we are currently examining the possibility of refloating and repairing the vessel. Meanwhile the Royal Marines Corps has replaced all Nimbatan personnel in the role of protecting surface ships in the harbour with over 280 Marine Commandos undertaking this task.

While the conflict in Nimbata seems to have escalated in recent days the Sultan and his Ministers would like to emphasise that progress is being made and preventing the cancer of communism is the noblest of callings and one that it is our duty to answer. Thank you very much.”

-To all Allied Forces:

In the next few days starting late tonight at around 11:30PM Monsoon rains wil be affecting a large proportion of the North East including Katha, Namkham and Mandalay.

Following this, due to increaed humidity levels heavy mist can be expected.

Message to Thirtycaliber:

Our nation would be grateful for your assistance and indeed our situation is becoming more desperate by the hour. Your forces are welcome and we hope that with the increasing amount of troops being provided by our allies we can bring the NLA to submission.

With the approval of the Nimbatan government, President of the Republic of Thirtycaliber has signed executive order 734, authorizing the formation of a naval task force to be headed to Nimbata to support the elected government and prevent its overthrow by communist rebels. The task force is expected to be comprised of a bulked-up carrier battle group, 2 amphibious assault groups, and various 'brown water' vessels. The task force is expected to begin steaming towards Nimbata as soon as it can be formed.

OOC: My greatest apologies, but I don't have the time at the moment to post, and I'm going to be gone tomorrow (deadline night for the school newspaper, I'll probably be there 'til midnight). I'll try to make it up to you guys by posting a lot on Saturday. Sorry this is taking so long to play out, but on the other hand, it's a dang good RP. :D

The airstrikes of mine will be occurring around 6:45, provided there are no major changes in the story line. So, if you're desperate, you can RP up until then.

Once again, sorry, and thanks for understanding.

Jungle West of Namhkam Airfield, 18:45

The plan had changed slightly and now 7,000 men were standing by ready to assault the airfield while another 3,600 readied to charge the town in a diversionary attack.

The roar of combat jets could be hard approaching and a few men shouted, some aiming Igla or Strela tubes to their shoulders and waiting for the sharp tone of the lock on alarm.
The planes passed over, Ferrussian probably, missiles were fired skyward and it appeared nothing was being fired back. Suddenly, the trees stated exploding around them, fire balls erupted out of nowhere the ground quaked as bombs and rockets rained down all over the place. Instantly perhaps 400 were killed but still the attack continued.

The troops at the tip of the advance had not time to pause and find cover instead they continued speedily marching forward towards the tree line, many slinging heavy mortars on their backs and others carrying shells. The perimeter fencing of the airfield was in sight and they resolved to set the mortars up here and continue forward leaving other units to fire them. Nobody however could see the green gas haze so perhaps it had cleared for they had no protection against it. The aerial bombardment had ceased apparently as quickly as it had begun, they were probably safe anyway being so close to the Kahtani base.

A message crackled though on the non secure radios, “All forces, to victory and liberation!”

This was the signal that the diversionary units to the North were in position and they could start the attack, just as the daylight faded.

Namhkam, Nimbata - 18:57

It was chaos.

The JSTARS reports had begun coming in just as the bombing run was about to begin, and FLOCOM frantically redirected the A-14s and Yak-141s while at the same time warning ground forces within Nimbata.

Field General Zaibowski looked over the JSTARS reports, and then the extensive notes the analysts had provided. He looked up at the chief analyst, almost skeptical for a second.

"So they're only throwing a fraction of their force at us?" he asked.

"That's right," said the analyst. "Since such a small amount are attacking, it's practically suicide, and what's more, they know it. There's no way it could be an offensive. You don't send a third of your forces to be slaughtered and sit around in the forest with the rest."

"It's sir, and I know very well you don't. My question is, why would they run that kind of diversion if we know their numbers?"

"Sorry, sir. My guess is that they don't know we know. The U3s fly at incredibly high altitudes, and would hardly be noticable when looking up through the trees. If they did see the spyplanes, they'd look like a very distant bird or something."

The general thought on this for a second.

"So, they're probably not going north," said Zaibowski. "That would put the river at their backs. They might be trying to draw us into the forests, but they must know from Katha that if they retreat into the forests, we'll hit them primarily by air, not ground. Could be it, but that doesn't require any immediate action on our part."

The analyst nodded.

Zaibowski continued. "So that leaves the south, or the back. Both of which are strong possibilities, but intel doesn't show any major movements behind the city, and they'd be hard pressed to get supply lines running through the forest. The south side is the airfield, which after their experience in Katha is probably a high priority target."

Once again, the analyst nodded. "That's the conclusion we came to, as well, sir. We think they'd want initiative on their side, so the airfield is our guess."

"We need to mine the southern edge of the city. That could slow them down, and if they cause enough trouble, they could cause them to slow down or stop to clear mines. Still, we're going to need a lot more protection down there then we have currently. Thank you. Dismissed."

The analyst saluted awkwardly. There was still a lot to get used to; war was beginning to become a lot less interesting in his mind.

Zaibowski slouched back into his chair. With little more than 1,500 infantry, inadequate artillery, and spotty air coverage, he was charged with holding the city and the airfield for the night. He closed his eyes, and prayed that no one would come into his room for the next few minutes as he tried to figure out what in the world he would do.

The buzzer on his desk rang. Why? he thought. He pressed the button.

"Sir, it's the air strike. There's been a SAM encounter."

Zaibowski put his hands over his face. "Thank you," he said. It wasn't very convincing.

Earlier, in the skies near Namhkam - 18:48

"We have missiles inbound!" came the call over radio that everyone had been dreading. As the missiles soared into the air, the planes climbed. Some of the missiles must have been Strelas or another low-altitude missile, because they began to drop off as they ran out of fuel. However, the remaining missiles continued on their deadly paths. The more maneuverable Yaks dodged a significant amount of the missiles, and since they had been in front of the formation, not so many missiles had been ready by the time they got over the enemies. One took a minor hit that did insignificant damage to the tail and left wing, but another was hit straight on.

Shards came off first, and the plane began to loose altitude. Then, the weakened left wing came off, and the pilots behind the plane watched in horror as the helpless plane began to spiral downward. The pilot struggled to regain control, and while the plane's VTOL capabilites helped it right itself a bit, the descent could not be stopped.

As the scene played out, missiles continued to streak by the A-14s. A few had already been hit with minor consequences: the A-14 was a very sturdy plane which had been known to fly back on one wing. The rest of the planes made for home, taking note of the coordinates and sending a last radio message of good luck to the pilot of the Yak-141.

Their flight path had taken them through enemy territory, but by now they were well behind the assault. The forest the Yak pilot would be crashing in was not highly inhabited, nor near a road. He ejected, and said a silent prayer as he pulled the ejector seat.

*****

FLOCOM-Namhkam and FCCH immediately began organizing a search for the pilot, however when the JSTARS were unable to locate him in a preliminary search that almost got it downed by additional SAMs, the search was called off until tomorrow. News in Ferrussia got hold of the story, and due to the time differences, it showed up on the 6:00 news. Prayers were said for the as of yet unnamed pilot (out of respect for the family, they would be notified first), and interviews with pilots by war correspondents confirmed that the pilot had ejected. News of the chemical attack had not yet been released: the Ferrussian government didn't want to discourage citizens, but plans were made to announce it tomorrow morning.

40 of the 81mm mortars were dispatched to the airfield, and the rocket artillery, crusaders, and tanks were prepared to strike either front. For defenses, 600 were along the western front, and the remaining ~900 were stationed near the airfield, with APCs and Hummers on standby to take them back to the western front if needed. Nimbatan and militia forces in the area were advised to guard the western front, and supplement the airfield if possible (OOC- let me know how many Nimbatan/militia forces are here, approx. Thanks). The liason with Katha advised their forces to prepare for an attack on the airfield, and to establish any defenses possible in the area.

Something more had to be done, though. FCCH, seeing the desparation of the Namhkam forces, called for a force of about 300 men to be transported via helicopter asap to Namhkam from Mandalay's own defenses, and the army in Ferrussia arranged for the dispatch of 5 Il-86 transports (basically just a high-capacity jet passenger plane, modified for military use, capacity 350) to begin transport of reinforcements of simple infantry to Mandalay, where they would then be relayed to Namhkam, but the ETA on that was over 5 hours.

A few of the tranport planes in Mandalay were retasked, as well. Instead of returning to Ferrussia to bring reinforcements and supplies, 3 An-124s were loaded with 2 BLU-82 "Daisy Cutter" bombs each, which had been sent to Mandalay in case they were needed.

Now they were.

The An-124s, with an escort of 5 F-24 Antares', flew to Namhkam, arriving at 19:32. The SAMs, which analysts had identified as Iglas from pilot descriptions, would not pose a threat, as the planes were ordered to fly at an altitude of 4,000 m, far above the Igla's cieling. The Air Force had made a mistake before, they would not make it again.

About a mile behind the estimated area of the enemy forces, 3 of the "Daisy Cutters" were dropped in a spread. Their purpose was not to kill troops, though intimidation was a benificial side effect of the bombs. Instead, they were clearing Landing Zones in the dense forest of the Nimbatan backcountry. As information came in on the latest positions of enemy advances, the additonal "Daisy Cutters" were dropped near the front lines of the already advancing NLA troops. All went onto the western front, so as not to clue the NLA to the fact that they knew about the offensive to the south.

With their purpose accomplished, the small force headed back to Mandalay. The helo attack from behind would begin shortly.

"...Well thats it then... we have to throw more at the city.... I want 7,000 more men in the city assault making a total of 10,600... and I want another 2000 at the airfielsd for a total of 9,000. Every mortar, artillery piece and RPG is going to have to be used. Get the men into postion!"

"Yes sir, shall we delay the attack for half an hour os then?"

"Yes, but hurry."

The Colonel howver had one cardthat the NLA had yet to play.

Bhamo Military Airport

Along the side of their runway a total of 37 Mig-19 Fighters lined up as their jet engines roared to life. Each armed with three 30mm Cannon and four 500lb bombs they were about to take off, fly to Namkham, release bombs on the airfield then fly south to attack the helicopters. Hopefully some would even return as a few of the NLA pilots had been Mig aces from the 'great patriotic struggle' where the communists had crushed dissidents trying to create a revolution with Amercian aid.

OOC: Militia in Nahkam: about 2000 only in the city centre, half will probably desert or defect.

Nimbatan Regular Army: about 25 T-55s and 300 personnel mostly tasked with protecting the government buildings in what was previously red square (ie: heart of the city).

FLOCOM-Namhkam - 19:38

Reports came in from the JSTARS that about a half-wing of planes were inbound at 19:37, and the strain put on the command structure was reaching a breaking point. The JSTARS were also reporting much larger than anticipated troop formations, and from the initial reports, it appeared the city would be overrun.

Needless to say, the MiGs were bad news.

A call went to FCCH, and 6 F-24 Antares interceptors were scrambled to, if not prevent the MiGs from reaching the city, at least finish them off. FLOCOM anticipated that the Stingers on the ground would take out around half, maybe more, of the fighters before they reached the city to do whatever it was they were doing. The proximity of the fighters' apparent course and the helecopters en route to Namhkam was alarming, and as a precaution the helicopters were ordered to slow down, giving the F-24s (blasting at their full speed of Mach 3.6 for the time being) a chance to pass them and put some air protection between the vulnerable copters and the approaching MiGs.

At roughly 2,500 mph, the F-24s were doing their best to intercept the MiGs, but most knew they would be too late to stop them before they reached the city. What they planned to do there was beyond them, but the F-24s would be able to easily finish off the MiGs with their 200 mi. range Super Phoenix missiles.

On the ground, forces were taking every precaution possible to ensure a sturdy defense, and if neccessary (which it probably would be), a quick fall back as well. Mortars were being set up all over the city, particularly around the airfield, and in utter desperation, A-14s were called in to Namhkam. They would arrive fairly soon, and drop their modified CBU-89s (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/munitions/cbu-89.htm) (Modified in that it's loaded with 94 antipersonell mines instead of the anti-tank/anti-personell mix. It's doable, b/c they're the exact same size, and the anti-personell are lighter). The 14 A-14s dispached would each drop their payload of 6 CBU-89s in front of the airfield, then land at the now semi-functional airfield, load up Mk. 82 bombs, and blow the crap (hopefully) out of the airfield assault.

As the MiGs reached within 5 miles of the city, Stingers were fired (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/ground/images/stinger-dvic462.jpg) all across the western front, a total of 67 reporting firing at the MiGs. FLOCOM was hoping to take out at least half of the MiGs, and with the relatively high success rate of the Stinger, it was more than probable they would do so.

The helos were now ~165 km from Namhkam, and the F-24s passed them and slowed to cruising speed (Mach 1.6) to conserve fuel. Although the F-24s were in range of the MiGs, they were more likely to hit if they fired after the MiGs changed course back to their base or to whatever their second destination was.

The time was now 19:49, and the world seemed to pause to watch the 67 Stingers streak towards their targets.
