INTERCEPTOR (IN)
Most often the smallest and lightest craft, interceptors -- as their name suggests -- are meant for quick take-offs from their mothership to intercept incoming enemies attackers. Interceptors are meant to launch before scrambling fighters and get to the incoming enemy by the time fighters are launched.
SPEEDS: just less than 1000mph on the average. Faster is better due to their task
$ 100,000
SCOUT (SS)
Scouts are light and fast craft, weakly armed but meant mainly for distance observations of the surrounding area. Scouts are also classed as Light Fighters.
SPEEDS: 800-1000mph, and usually have afterburners
$ 100,000
FIGHTER (FC)
The Fighter craft is for dogfighting enemy fighters, and group attacking targets. They are classified in 3 varieties: Light, Medium, and Heavy. This is based on mass, which is usually based on size and armor mass. Medium Fighters are about the size of a 20th century Terran F-14 aircraft; Light Fighters are that size or smaller (generally), and Heavy Fighters are that size or larger. The heavier the fighter, the slower its speed. Heavy Fighters are generally around 20 feet in length.
SPEEDS:
Light: 800mph as average, some 1000mph, most have afterburners
Medium: 700-900mph, some have afterburners
Heavy: 500-800mph, average at 650mph, few have afterburners
$ 130,000
BOMBER (BM)
This is a Heavy Fighter-sized craft which is outfitted to attack large ships efficiently. This usually means having "Ship Killer" Torpedoes and larger weapon types. They are noticeably slower than Medium Fighters, and slower than Heavy Fighters. Bombers are also classed in Light, Medium, and Heavy based on size, armor, and weapons.
SPEEDS: in the 5000mph range
$200,000
CORVETTE (CV)
http://artships.com/1998/bigblue.jpg
This is a very large fighter, much larger than a Heavy Fighter. Corvettes are known for their ability to take out fighters, group attack a Capital Ship, and there are different versions of Corvettes specialized for certain tasks (repair, refuel, etc). They are the only craft (unless specially enhanced) that can have automated turrets -- that is, unmanned turrets which rely on ultra-effective computers to automatically target and eliminate enemy fighters. Corvettes are 3 to 4 times bigger than a fighter, around 200 feet (or 66 meters) in length, but can be shorter if they are especially bulkly. They are crewed with more than just a single pilot, and can also have crewed turrets. They have large and very effective engines to support their "fast" speeds.
SPEEDS: 5000-6000mph
$ 200,000
ATTACKER (AS)
http://artships.com/1998/spune_front.jpg
Also nick-named Assault Ships, these ships are larger, more equipt bombers. They range in size from just bigger than a Heavy Bomber to about half-a-mile or so.
SPEEDS: depends on size; bomber-sized ones are around bomber speeds, larger are around their larger cousins (like capships' speeds)
$250,000
EXPLORER (ES)
Explorer ships are rather rare to see in combat, mainly because they are not meant for it. They are meant to be sent into newly discovered star systems and mapping out new sectors.
SPEEDS: dependant upon size like Attackers
$ 500,000
TRANSPORT (TS)
http://www.space.com/images/h_antimatter_062000_03.jpg
These craft range in size from very small (size of fighters) to very large (a mile or more). They are simply meant for shipping various things (cargo) from one location to another. They are either unarmed or lightly armed, and require escorts to protect them. Very small transports often carry cargo such as commodies for interplanetary trading, while larger transports carry anything from minerals to troop-backup to carrier supplies.
SPEEDS: also dependant upon size, but slower because of the mass of their cargos
$ 100,000,000
CRUISER (same as Capital Ship)
http://www.napa.ufl.edu/graphics/spacegrantthum.jpg
Cruisers are smaller and less armed Capital Ships (see below). Crusiers are meant for traveling between locations doing various tasks, and often are used to patrol the common "space lanes" to deter piracy and crime. They are also nick-named "Destroyers" but do not complete the analogy with their sea-based counterparts. Space Destroyers are usually Cruisers with a larger weapon compliment.
SPEEDS: 4000 to 5000mph
$ 100,000,000
CAPITAL SHIP (CS)
http://artships.com/1998/lander_front.jpg
The Capital Ship is a multi-leveled, large-crewed craft meant as a platform for larger guns than any fighter could ever wish to mount. Most -- if not all -- capships have hangars holding anywhere from 50 to 150 fighters (a "full compliment" is 100 fighters and with bombers mixed in). They range from as small as one-third-of-a-mile long to one mile or so.
SPEEDS: around 3000 to 4000mph, slower for bigger ones
$200,000,000
SPACECRAFT CARRIER (SC)
http://artships.com/1998/carrier_s.jpg
Also known as a carrier, these are capital ships with larger hangars that can support more fighters (usualy only up to 200 though), and include vast repair abilities and ammunition & ordnance storage for those fighters. Can range larger than capships.
SPEEDS: around 2000mph or so, for a mile long carrier
$200,000,000
BATTLESHIP (BS)
This is a larger and more deadly Attacker ship. Battleships sport large weapons, fit only for ships of their size, and these weapons are much more powerful than any smaller-scale variant. Battleships are known for taking out a number of capital ships before going down itself in fleet-to-fleet engagements. Size from around half-a-mile to a mile: the size of a capship, but have much more firepower and don't have hangars as frequently as capships do.
SPEEDS: 2000-4000 mph based on size and propulsion type
$130,000,000
DREADNAUGHT (DN)
http://www.cool-to-be-evil.de/pics/ships/Ship26_2.jpg
The fear invoked by the sight of a Dreadnaught cannot be described. Dreadnaughts are larger Battleships, incredibly armored and with great weapons and usually large hangars. Dreadnaughts decimate whole fleets by themselves, and with capship and/or battleship escort they are purely devestating.
SPEEDS: around 2000mph with a decent propulsion type
$ 150,000,000
