Stand-Off Missile Delivery

25-06-2003, 05:47
Sleeverian Arms Corporation is proud to offer its latest product . . . .

Currently, modern warplanes are somewhat limited as to the number of cruise missiles they can carry. Warships (both surface combatants and subs) can carry large numbers of these missiles, but resupply can be an issue when they are far from port.

To address these issues, Sleeveria has converted the venerable Boeng 747-400ER cargo airplane into an excellent cruise missile launch platform. These massive aircraft can carry 64 Tomahawk-sized cruise missiles on four rotary launchers (sixteen per launcher). Their impressive range of 7,670 nautical miles at 567 mph give them a tremendous reach; factor in the 1,000 mile cruise missile range and optional tanker support, and you can project force quickly around the globe. To achieve this range, we've cut all unnecessary weight and added several fuel tanks.

The plane is unarmed; its defenses consist of several IR jamming units to defeat heat-seeking missiles and a large supply of chaff / flare dispensers.

The benefits of using the Boeng 747-400ER in this manner are numerous. Most importantly, you'll be able to get large numbers of cruise missiles within range of a target quickly; another important plus is that your naval combatants on station near the target will be able to conserve their missiles for more pressing tactical targets that arise on a moment-by-moment basis. The plane's commander will have the option of reprogramming one or all of the missiles in flight, allowing for last-minute retargeting.

Price: $200 Million per plane / $600,000 per cruise missile

OOC: This idea was explored a decade or so ago, but was not followed through. I've used real weapon weights and payload/range numbers from Boeing's site to make it realistic)

This system interests my air and naval forces very much. I would like to purchase 5 of these planes, totalling $1,000,000,000. I would also like to purchase enough of the missiles to refit the planes 6 times each. That would be 1920 missiles, totalling $1,152,000,000.
Total:
5 planes + 1920 missiles
$2,152,000,000

would you be able to convert an Il96 -300 into a platform to launch AS-15 Cruise missiles?
26-06-2003, 15:37
I will check for you.
26-06-2003, 16:02
Okay, here's what we have so far.

The IL 96-300 could be modified to carry two rotary launchers of 12 missiles each. The Soviet-made cruise missile that you have specified is larger than the Tomahawk, and the plane is significantly smaller than the 747-400ER; therefore, the loadout would be much less.

Estimated cost for the refit: gutting the interior, installing the two rotary launchers, installing launch doors at the bottom of the fuselage, and all other custom work would run approximately $30 million per plane.

Thank You, im assuming the interior is largely empty except for a few systems operators?

We would like to convert four of these aircraft which currently serve with our national airline (rather like Aeroflot, the military can use any of the planes at any time for any purpose).
26-06-2003, 16:31
Yes, the interior will be empty. The cockpit will be extended to allow for 4 weps specialists.

You have clearance to land your planes at Sleeveria One, our large central airport. Refit will take 2 RL days. We request half of the funds up front, and the rest upon completion.

Sleeveria, we're extremely grateful for your large purchase of C-5 Galaxy Transports, and therefore would like to repay some of your generosity.

We thank you for your order. Due to a massive order that we're working on, we will not be able to fulfill your entire order immediately. Would you accept two planes and 2,000 missiles per RL day? If this is acceptable, then we will accept payment in five RL day installments of 20%. We will transport the planes and missiles to your specified location (we will fly the missiles to you instead of the standard sea transport as our way of making up for the chopped-up order delivery schedule).

Upon receipt of the first 20% installment, we will prepare the first shipment.

One must be cautious in making offhanded comments, especially when dealing with weapons systems of this reach and power. Perhaps you were kidding; perhaps you were not. We cannot tell.

It is one thing if one of our customers were to use our weapons systems for a dastardly attack without notifying us beforehand; we would not be culpable. It would be something entirely different for us to conclude a sale to a nation who has stated upfront that their plans for using our systems are diabolical.

We're sure that you understand our position; from a purely business point-of-view, we will not allow you to purchase this system, as it could be bad for business if you were indeed to follow through, and the delivery systems were traced back to us.

Perhaps once you have proven your peaceful nature, we will reconsider our stance.

OOC: Actually, I remembered reading about the concept in a Popular Science mag years ago. That image looks like it might be the same one from the mag. Crap, and I could go with more missiles, too. I worked the capacity out by checking out the payload capability of the plane and the weight of the missiles, estimated weight of launchers and equipment, etc. Looks like I was too conservative. Thanks for the link.

IC: Sleeverian Arms will fill your newest order at the same rate as your previous one, if that is acceptable. We are pleased that you have found them to your satisfaction.

Just out of curiosity - you may have seen the announcement of our Overlord Air Defense platform ( http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=46797&highlight= ). We have no plans to market this at this time; however, were we to consider exporting them, is this something that would interest your defense planners?
Western Asia
01-07-2003, 21:54
OOC: So what is the new capacity for these things? Is it retroactive or just on the latest batch?

I just stumble across that and there were some differences that I thought you might like to see.

We've actually developed some Radio-wave seeking missiles from the HARM platform in an unrelated incident (the mention of such weapons later caught my eye while checking up on G2mil for the new issue). We can provide you with some if you want them...I'm working on making a cruise missile with similar seeking capacity.

IC: That will be well, the full payment is being wired now.

The air-defense version is of less interest since we have a strong set of missile defense grids over WA, but we might buy a couple to add to offensive area defenses....still to be determined.

All orders are filled with the new larger-capacity missile loadouts (as mentioned below). Thanks for your business.

The Never-setting sun: We apologize, but we are not releasing production rights at this time. We will inform you as to when that changes.

Due to Western Asia's research, we are pleased to report that the capacity of the aircraft has increased to 96 missiles. As a bonus, we are sending Western Asia one plane in the new configuration. We will also upgrade their current planes to handle the additional missiles at no extra cost. From this point forward, all planes will have the 96-missile capacity. Previouis customers may request the modification for a minimal cost.

Western Asia: We wouild be interested in evaluating the HARM concept that you've mentioned (if for no other reason than to purchase a number of units). We would like to request 24 for evaluation purposes. Please let us know the price if this is agreeable to you.

OOC: Oooh, Yay! Thanks.

IC: Sleeveria, we would happily provide you with 24 samples for free, a thanks for your extremely generous gifts. We'll be sending them over in a small military transport jet and 2 of the tech/engineers that helped develop the new system will be there to advise you about it.

It would be very powerful to have on a longer-range cruise-type missile (which could also do more to any station thanks to a larger warhead) and we would be happy to pursue a joint development program based on the Tomahawk or Tactical Tomahawk (or other) cruise missiles.

The engineers are veterans of various projects such as the creation of EMP warheads for the Tomahawk.
Western Asia
05-07-2003, 09:35
Hmmm brilliant idea: HARMR but with EMP-warhead instead of the standard. It ensures that not only will the target be disabled but that, unlike with a normal HARM warhead, you'll be able to ensure that NONE of the equipment is used again....one standard HARMR followed by a HARMRE(MP) would knock out first the antenna then the equipment inside (since the second would be able to lock on even once the radio source is gone).
