You're correct about the Iowas being from the 1940s, but the fact is, for shore bombardment, there's nothing better. 16 inch shells falling on a hostile shore would've been fantastic. As a side note, I visited the USS New Jersey (second of the Iowas) back in 1988. :D

What about the "but"? BUT, the Iowas were too expensive, I think about two THOUSAND crew were needed to keep them going and they weren't always used. They were placed in reserve, sadly.....

The old Iowa class, sure, but try the new ones in my warships thread, come with all the missiles and mod cons to defend themselves, and the new harpoon etc can't get through old armour, they came in after armour was retired and the old AS missiles that could penetreate armour are no longer in service, only the Russians have a few older ones they couldn't afford to buy replacements for. and even then a modern SAM system can stop those old high speed but unintelligent missiles, they were made for the days when AA was still 40mm and 5" guns, or just the old seacat or tartar systems. a RIM-118, ESSM, SM-1 or Vulcan cannon CIWS is a whole shitload more effective than those old SAMs.
