The Rifle is available with 30 round and 42 round magazines. The magazines are made from clear plastic which enable the shooter to be able to see how many they have remaining.
The ejection port of many bullpup configuration rifles in on the right side and prevents the use of the weapon by left handed individuals due to the fact that rounds would eject onto the shooters face. The AUG can be converted for a left handed shooter by inserting a left handed bolt and moving the ejection port cover to the right side. The cooking handle remains on the left hand side but the weapon is still much easier for left handed shooters to use than most bullpup rifles.
All barrels for the Steyr AUG are hammer-forged from high-grade steel and feature chrome-plated bores. The combat rifle is available with multiple barrels for different roles and barrels are interchangeable. There is a 621 mm heavy barrel to act as a light support weapon, a 508 mm barrel as a combat rifle, a 407 mm barrel to act as carbine, and a 350 mm barrel for commando purposes.
The rifle can easily be converted into a 9mm submachinegun with the help of a conversion kit or can be purchased in a 9 mm configuration. The conversion kit includes barrel, bolt group, and magazine adapter for special 9mm magazines. The Steyr AUG in 9 mm fires using the blowback principle, and it does not utilize a rotating bolt like the standard configuration AUG.
