Naiad unloading tanks onto a hostile beach during testing
http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/zubr/images/zubr6.jpg
PURPOSE
The mission of the ship is to carry out rapid sea-lift and beach landing of assault troops and combat material on territory held by hostile forces. The ship also provides fire support for the troop operations on shore. The ship is capable of laying active minefields.
DESIGN
The square-shaped pontoon structure of the hull provides a rugged, stable and seaworthy design. The pontoon's superstructure is divided by two longitudinal bulkheads into three functional sections. The middle section accommodates the compartment for armoured vehicles to be landed with taxi tracks and loading and unloading ramps. The two outer sections house the main and auxiliary power plants, the troop compartments, crew living quarters, and life support and NBC (nuclear, biological, chemical) protection. Ventilation, air-conditioning and heating systems are installed in the amphibious troops compartments and in the crew living quarters. These areas are also fitted with thermal and sound insulation coatings and vibration isolation structures.
The ship is fitted with light armour plating to provide a degree of protection to the crew and the troops against ammunition and blast fragments. The Naiad can carry up to 130t of cargo: three medium battle tanks, eight infantry combat vehicles, ten armoured personnel carriers, or 360 fully equipped amphibious landing troops. The ship has a bow and a stern ramp for fast landing of troops and combat material.
WEAPON SYSTEMS
The ship is equipped with two stabilised multiple rocket launchers, four Igla-1M portable air defence missile systems, and two AK-630 30mm automatic gun mounts. The AK-630 artillery system provides defence against manned and unmanned air attack, including incoming sea- skimming anti-ship missiles, small sea targets, lightly armoured coastal targets and floating mines. The six-barrel automatic gun, model AO-18 has a firing rate of 5,000 rounds/min.
NAVIGATION
The Naiad is equipped with a navigation suite comprising two navigation radars, gyrocompass, magnetic compass, drift log, satellite navigation receiver, Decca receiver, radio direction finder, master gyroscope and day and night vision drift sight.
PROPULSION
Three upright ring shrouds, housing the air propellers and standing upright at the back of the ship, give the Naiad its distinctive appearance. The four bladed propellers which are provide the ship with a top speed of 60 knots. High-temperature gas turbine engines provide the power to drive the air-cushion blowers and the air propellers. The craft has four blowers model NO-10, fitted with axial operating wheels of 2.5m diameter, to generate the air cushion. The air thrust for movement is powered by three four-bladed, reversible, variable-pitch air propellers, 5.5m in diameter. The air propellers are mounted inside ring shrouds. The Naiad is equipped with two electric power plants. Each power plant has two gas turbine generators, each rated at 100kW. Control of the ship and systems is carried out from a main control station, a central control room and through various remote control panels.

What would happen if, say, someone were to shoot a blade off of one of the fans? Because I am fairly sure that the loss of balance would cause the fan to tear itself to pieces, causing damage to the rest of the ship. Is the material used to build the fans strong enough to withstand continual fire for as long as it takes to unload?

AO:
Very nice, something to replace the aging LCAC, but still useful.
I would like to order just 1 for engineering remodification to fit into the current LSD/LPD/LHA for overseas transport and reproduction. From the looks of the design, ship not capable of open seas independent maneuvers greater than 5 days in length (ship too small to support crew and troops for extended periods). Will pay extra for consultation, negotiations, and international rights.
Offer 1 billion.
Austrin Ontis,
I'll take 10. Is there any discount for a fellow GDODAD member?
Whatever your answer is, the appropriate amount is being wired through the GDODAD bank to you.
We await Austrin-Ontis' confirmation of our order, so that we update our Military Table of Equipment :)

The fans have been strengthened as much as possible, but obviously they are still a vulnerability because they have to be exposed to allow the Naiad to get to the speeds it does. There is an automatic failsafe system in place that will attempt to compensate with the other fans if one goes out of action or failing that reduce power to prevent structural damage. The light armour plating that covers the Naiad is actually twice as thick on the fan supports and standard thickness on the fan frame.

The single Naiad for modification has now been delivered, along with full blueprints and a few personnel to make clear any issues that would be difficult to ascertain from the blueprints. We are currently looking over your proposed changes, and it looks very good. Our engineers have a number of issues to raise based on their experience working with the Naiad which should make modification less troublesome. Generally they are small alterations however.

Apparently I now have $500 million extra in my foreign purchasing budget, so I'd like to order three. Awaiting confirmation. http://www.sc3000.com/forums/images/face1.GIF
Have you considered adding self-raising heavy metal shields in front of the fans for protection during assaults? High speeds shouldn't be necessary then... by the way, how well does the air cushion stand up to enemy fire? http://www.sc3000.com/forums/images/face1.GIF

That's a damn good idea about metal shields for the fans that deploy as they hit the worst of the enemy fire. At that stage you could cope with a loss of maneuverability in exchange for a significantly increased survival rate. We'll put together a conversion package over the next couple of days and do some tests. If it works we'll put a price up here so that they can be purchased. We'll do yours for free though, as payment for the idea.
The air cushion is actually fairly robust to small arms fire, since it is self sealing. You really have to hit it with a 120mm shell and up to do sufficient damage to truly cause problems. Missiles obviously work too, but the countermeasures go a long way towards stopping that.
We would like to thank AO for the transaction. Nice doing business.

Thank you... according to the calculator, I can spend $1.5 billion per year each on domestic military spending and foreign purchases, but I don't know how often I should do that. I guess keeping it under one billion per week should be acceptable. http://www.sc3000.com/forums/images/face1.GIF

That sounds pretty reasonable. One day per month doesn't really work because that still means you are getting several million new citizens a month, but anything higher than that and your leaders just keep dying from old age every few weeks or so.

Modification under construction; lower engine mounts to be flush with deck of superstructure; collapsable mast to the starboard side; duel exhaust, single stack; and a narrowing of the hull, to compensate for loss of storage, the floors of the troop quarters were made of mesh aluminum and hallow for placement of small arms and munitions.
The new dimentions makes the new product able to now fit into LHD/A class amphibious assault ships. Too many modifications were necessary to able LSD/LPD to carry due to low flight decks and clearance problems.
R&D proposal to roll off line tomorrow. LHD 1 Macedon to arrive for exercises.

The New Naiad, renamed the PLAC, was a huge success in the Naval Amphibious Operations that took place over the weekend. The engine reconfiguration reduced drag by 10%, increased max speed by 5 knots, and increased fuel efficiency by 15%. Corcyra Naval Shipyards will conduct immediate mass production of the units for local military use and for sale abroad. The new price for the R&D design will be $62,000,000.
OOC: AO due to cooperation and design implementation, gets the second unit produced for free and shared technology for design and replication.

do they have the structural support for us to add a heli pad on each of them?
I believe so. You would obviously have to put the helicopter pad at the front away from the fans, and that would necessitate either the removal of one or more weapon systems or a small reduction in carrying capacity. We'd recommend you use support craft to launch helicopters though, it tends to be cheaper and you can keep them further back, out of the range of enemy direct fire weapons.
do you happen to have these crafts

How went the testing on the self-raising shields? http://www.sc3000.com/forums/images/face1.GIF
Prototype is complete, but we are currently in a period of increased naval tension that will likely result in regional war in the next few days, which isn't the best situation to begin testing.
Congratulations Ao.It's certainly much better than ours <looking at the Gradenk's LCACs and comparing it with Ao's,green with envy >
Can we trade few of our LCACs with yours?
I don't see why not, we are interested in studying numerous different implementations of LCAC design to help us in future projects along these lines. How does three for three sound?
Sorry for the late reply. Yes why not, Our three LCACs are heading towards your nation
Below are the specs:
- The landing craft air cushion (LCAC) is a high-speed, over-the-beach fully amphibious landing craft capable of carrying a 60-75 ton payload.
- Capable of operating from existing and planned well deck ships,
- it is used to transport weapons systems, equipment, cargo and personnel from ship to shore and across the beach.
The advantages of air-cushion landing craft are numerous.
- can carry heavy payloads, such as an M-1 tank, at high speeds.
- Their payload and speed mean more forces reach the shore in a shorter time, with shorter intervals between trips.
The LCAC is capable of carrying a 60 ton payload (up to 75 tons in an overload condition) at speeds over 40 knots.
Fuel capacity is 5000 gallons.( average of 1000 gallons per hour ) Maneuvering considerations: 500 yards or more to stop and 2000 yards or more turning radius.
How it works:
The LCAC, like all hovercraft, rides on a cushion of air. The air is supplied to the cushion by four centrifugal fans driven by the craft's gas turbine engines. The air is enclosed by a flexible skirt system manufactured of rubberized canvas. Unlike the Surface Effect Ship (SES), no portion of the LCAC hull structure penetrates the water surface; the entire hull rides approximately four feet above the surface.
Where can it operate ?
LCAC operates in waters regardless of depth, underwater obstacles, shallows or adverse tides. It can proceed inland on its air cushion, clearing obstacles up to four feet, regardless of terrain or topography), including mud flats, sand dunes, ditches, marshlands, riverbanks, wet snow, or slippery and icy shorelines. Equipment, such as trucks and track vehicles, can disembark via ramps located both forward and aft, there by shortening critical off load time.
How is it good as an amphibious assault craft?
LCAC is a dramatic innovation in modern amphibious warfare technology. It provides the capability to launch amphibious assaults from points over the horizon, thereby decreasing risk to ships and personnel and generating greater uncertainty in the enemy's mind as to the location and timing of an assault, thereby maximizing its prospects of success. It is also important to point out the LCAC propulsion system makes it less susceptible to mines than other assault craft or vehicles

Very nice indeed. It is likely that a vehicle of this type will fill a niche where the armament of the Naiad would be excessive and expensive, but the speed and versatility of a LCAC is still required. When we consider the waters around our nation safe enough to conduct military exercises we'll put all the landing craft we have built or acquired through their paces and see how they all fit into a battleplan for naval assault.

The Corporate High Council would like to express its satisfaction about the purchased vessels. Also, we would like to announce that Austrin Ontis has made it to our list of "preferred arms dealers"

Okay Thanks. I'll take delivery of your three hovercrafts in exchange for the three of Gradenk's own LCACs. We would test them and would purchase more if we're pleased with the performance.

Prototype is complete, but we are currently in a period of increased naval tension that will likely result in regional war in the next few days, which isn't the best situation to begin testing.
Thanks. With that, I'd like to order 16 more Naiads. Awaiting confirmation. http://www.sc3000.com/forums/images/face1.GIF
While we are happy to fulfill your orders, the war has now begun, and we are afarid it will be most difficult to deliver the Naiad until we have secured a path through our enemies naval defences. We shall begin manufacture of all of your orders, and contact you each via telegram, as well as making an official announcement on this thread, when we are able to make the delivery.

The Most Serene Republic of Mon Copain would be interested in purchasing 2 to 3 of these landing craft. However, we find the price of $50 million to be outrageous, even for a prototype craft. We shall not pay a cent over $40 million a piece.

I'm afraid that 50 million is the minimum price we can sell the Naiad for, and for that you are getting the most heavily armed and armoured landing craft out there today (as far as we have seen), as well as one of the fastest and most versatile. We would urge you to reconsider and consider buying at the set price, we are sure you will not be disappointed. However, should you not wish to, the best we can offer is an unarmed variant for 45 million a piece.

AO, one of our allies recently combat tested these during a "cleansing" mission in my country. They were quite effective at laying down covering fire and shutting down enemy defenses.
We'd like to purchase 280. 14 billion will be wired upon confirmation.
Thank You,

Although this thread is over 1 month old, we'd like to continue it by purchasing 200, at a total cost of $10 billion. OOC: (Ancient and Holy Terra, thanks for the link from the n00b thread, heh, we have been looking for alternative methods, besides ships and heavy aircraft to transport troops.)
We are still currently unable to deliver, given the war we are involved in, but it finally appears to be nearing some manner of ceasefire, so perhaps the end is not far off. Until then, delivery will be delayed, though we will inform you when we are able to supply your orders.

Made it within NS.
One could always go out, develop, and intro it...but there has to be some realism to things and not every country can produce, would produce all types and makes of weapons (as many people as there are selling every modern MBT side-by-side.
Sorry about the later reply. Blockade has now been removed, all current processed orders have been delivered and unprocessed orders will be handled later today.
Thank you all for your patience
Firstly, I’d like to apologise for the delay in dealing with the orders that were made in the last few weeks, I was tied up with other business and simply forgot to keep checking for interest. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Western Asia for bringing to my attention that thee was some interest I had not responded to. As mentioned previously, if you have already had an order confirmed it has now been delivered since the war is now over. I am still planning to send telegrams to those who are due to receive units that were delayed due to the war.
With that out of the way, here is the order confirmation details

Neues Sibirien
Order confirmed for 500 Naiad class landing craft
Payment of 25 billion expected by wire
Delivery will take place in 18 months (6 RL days)
Production rights applications
To all those interested in acquiring the rights for the Naiad, these are our terms, though they are subject to negotiation.
Payment of 1 billion dollars and agreement to not modify the design without prior consent (which will generally be given, generally in exchange for a copy of the plans of the proposed modification for our own use)
If this is acceptable, or you wish to negotiate, please get in touch either on this medium or via telegram.
Whose design is it anyway?
As Echelon pointed out, the Naiad is the Zubr landing craft, as produced by Russia. However, we concur with Western Asia in this, we developed it first, and it didn’t previously exist in the NS world, so it’s ours. However, we do accept that other countries would be in their rights to ‘think up’ the same design, because of where it is taken from. We’d prefer if people bought the rights off us though, obviously...

We find these terms acceptable. We are sending you a payment of 1 billion dollars now.
We will not modify the design as it is for now (I simply don't have the time), but we might look towards replacing some of the weaponry or possibly adding some of my own systems to the craft. Any modifications, however, will be made in accordance with the required notification and sharing of information.
Thank you for this opportunity.
OOC: No problem, AO. Thanks for the rights!
