I think that the old Jolt forums are through. No one posts as often, the threads die off quickly, and the spam and flaming we all knew and loved is gone. I think it's time to switch over. Have you? Will you? Or are you going to wait until the last minute?

I just plain don't like the new forums. They're harder to read, there's a lack of nice, clear borders, it asks you to wait after you posted before it takes you back to the thread - basically all the things that piss me off about pretty much all the other forums on the web.

Some of us have made it, but the majority are still lingering here. Make the jump, get into the new place, find old faces, and make it a home. NSG has survived one move intact already, it can survive a second. But the longer you leave it, the less of the old culture you'll be able to bring with you.

i find its harder to see who's posted what - the names are too small. and the names in quotes are way too small as well. plus the little green arrow to take you back to the quoted post is gone, which was an epic feature if reading a long thread backwards (is it just me who does that? :P)

i've pretty much made the switch already. i didn't want to, but this place has been so quiet lately its not worth checking nearly as much as either a) i used to, or b) the new forum

Beyond that I remember when I first started playing here the older countries basically ruled the forums. I was told many times that I couldn't do this, that or the other by older countries. Now it seems that since I have become an older country that I am hated just because I am older. We used to determine the max number of ships by the countries population. I still use this method, however now I see new countries claiming to have as many or more ships then I do. Then when I say something about it I am suddenly considered the bad guy. I didn't like being told what to do by the older countries either when I was new. But I did seem to have a choice, now it seems that I'm expected to take orders from whoever decides they are in change regardless of the time in game, population, etc. Guys I just want to run my country they way I wish to like is advertised and write storylines about the happenstance in my empire. As well as being free to state my opinions on the forums just like others do even if everyone doesn't agree with my opinions. I have to tell you that I don't agree with some other opinions I've seen either, but I still agree that everyone should have the right to express them regardless.

I refuse to go to the new forums, so this is probably the last you'll see of me.

Why, out of interest?

Maybe I've just been here too long, but I can remember the last move. The move that brought us here in the first place. We may have lost the occasional person, but it worked remarkably well. What's so impossible about doing it again, about moving back into a place we actually control for ourself.

Does anyone remember when Jolt added the word filtering? We complained. The mods complained. Every-fucking-body complained. The result? Nothing, not a peep, and certainly no help from their admins. Sure, the new place has its issues -- some of them are just learning one's way around a new system, or issues with the theme. But the new place also has responsive admins and mods, working bloody hard to make it better. You can raise an issue with them, and it will be fixed in a day or two.

The new forums are owned by us*, run by us, and the admins actually listen and work for us. New features, bug fixes, tweaks and improvements are coming in literally daily. And the whole thing, every word you say, every post you make, every discussion you might want to have, is no longer here solely at the whim of Jolt's admins, who are known for shutting down discussion.

Well, we're* still here from the courtesy of Jolt, and there's no telling how long that will last. So you can use this place, but it could very well disappear with no warning. On the other hand, the new forums are ours*, basically, and a pretty secure place to set up. Things are going to change, but NSG can survive this sort of upheaval, if people are willing to put in a bit of effort.

I really don't get the hate for the new place. The theme isn't the best, I'll admit that, but I remember the same whining about this theme when we arrived first. Yes, you lose your postcount. Doesn't matter, you keep your join date, which was always the best yardstick, and it's active enough you can quickly rebuild lost posts anyway. And it's now run by NS, for NS. It's not run by some massive faceless parent company, concerned only with profit. It's run by the admins, many of whom are players. And its run by the players themselves, because the admins now actually listen. What it really needs is you guys: experienced players, experienced debaters, people to carry the NSG culture we all know over to a new home, to be flagbearers for a new generation of posters. I shall see you over there.

To paraphrase a great character, the new forums sucks golf balls through a garden hose. Pity that it doesn't seem to matter to the mods pushing us over there.

I've said it before, but as long as both forums remain open, I'll be posting on both.

I don't understand the dislike of the new forums, though. Sure the colors are a bit unpleasant (green on white), but a forum ultimately succeeds or fails on the quality of its users, not on its exact design or format. Its functional, and not unbearably ugly, and that's good enough for me.

Sadly, it would appear that the "new" forum is a throwback to the one prior to Jolt.

I didn't say the new one was perfect. I do say that it's improving, and that the admins are busy adding new features and fixing up issues as fast as they can.

I'm going to try out the new forums again. Jordi was on them earlier, and from observing the debate quality seems to have gone up somewhat as old posters are diluting the cesspit of putrid n00bs it was when I dropped in a while back.

Colour schemes, lack of some features from Jolt etc are something I can get used to, so thats not too big an issue for me. I'd rather people would have stayed here, but, well, they haven't.

I don't think I will follow you on the new forum, guys. It's not different as any other forum while this Jolt forum was. I guess I'm back a member of the unserved audience.

It's not only the interface, which is a pain in the ass, it are the people. While arriving here isn't that difficult, many people are not prepared to do the effort. In a way, it's cutting the weed. On the new forum you don't have that kind of 'filter'.

The quantity will increase, but I doubt that the quality will go in the same direction.

Oh come on. How is the Jolt forum so unique in a way that the other one isn't? Ok, the other one has more right wingers maybe, but that'll balance out somewhat if all the left wingers here come over. And maybe the other one has a slightly higher spam level, but not by much. Jolt was not so special and unique, in my experience at least.

If you're using Firefox, the temporary fix to this is to look in the "View" menu, under "Page Style", and select "No Style". It isn't the prettiest, but it does get rid of all the colours and things.

The more advanced fix is to use the Stylish extension to retheme the forums, which I'll play about with a bit. However, that does take some getting used to.

The final option is to wait a little for [violet] to hack together another theme for it, which isn't the highest entry on the priority list right at the moment. Ey's looking at it though.

Edit: Okay, have toyed with Stylish a little. There isn't a nice user-provided theme for the forums yet, although I may tweak one to see if I can put something together. However, there are several global themes which will reset the colours to something different quite easily, and most of these deal with the green issue. Here's one example (http://b.armory.com/~xyzzy/nsgdark.png)*. While that particular scheme might not be quite up your street, they aren't too much work to tweak. Yes, this is definitely sub-optimal -- the ideal is a better theme -- but it (or similar) might serve to tide you over.

*Theme is called PitchDark Companion I. This is global, which means it affects all sites -- I can tell you how to limit the effects to just NSG if you want.
