More important that what side of the stable they sit on, they are also moving toawrds sovereignty and recognising the local inuit tongue as the official language.

A whole Inuit nation sitting there, with untapped resources and imminent global warming. I wonder if they're white enough to avoid beeing invaded.

I'm glad to see someone else finally realizes that Democrat = Communist. I've been saying that for years.

(N.B. Before someone wastes their time writing a long boring post about how their not the same, and I'm an idiot for equating the two, and anyways the GOP are all Nazis, let me point out that it's a joke, i.e. not to be taken seriously.)

I wonder what the government of Greenland actually does. Given that they're apparently more left-leaning than the social democrats, they probably want to do a bunch of "left-wing" things. But what is there to do in Greenland? A lot of people live a more or less nomadic lifestyle, so it's hard to make them beneficiaries of any government cash handouts. Indigenous rights is an obvious thing, but that seems to be a done deal anyways, given that the majority of the population is Inuit of some form. There's not a whole lot of industry other than finishing (and whaling...), and I can't imagine that state control of that would fit the cultural values up there.

So really, there's nothing to nationalise, and basically only one city to build things in. People don't earn enough to run the government as it is, so more taxes aren't going to do anything (plus I can't imagine there being huge income inequality in Greenland anyways).

So...commies without a cause then?

Don't be ridiculous -- everyone knows that the republicans are fascists, not nazis. :p

Nothing to do with them being an opposition party. Its because they're leftists.

The Republicans haven't been about keeping the government out of people's lives in like...ever. Back when Barry Goldwater was moved out of the limelight and replaced by evangelicals and anti-communists (or their merger: the neo-conservatives), the GOP made a choice and pinned their colours to one particular political movement.

Let's face it, any attachment to them by anyone who cares about civil liberties, or even economic freedom for that matter, is just silly.

None of which is relevant to the election victory, in response to a corrupt government, of a left-wing party in Greenland. As I pointed out, there's not a whole lot this government is likely to do which is different to what previous Greenlandic have done.

In Communist Greenland, seals seal YOU!

Yes. Any country that doesn't vote in favour of becoming a colony of the USA is clearly unfree. :p

Maybe just that, actually, expecially between the Inuit majority and some Danes.

Still, I think that the main reasons for this left-turn would be:
1.reaction to current right-wing Danish cabinet
2.environmental issues
3.social services - many Greenlanders live in poverty and are afflicted by alcohol addiction.

While there may not be a lot to do right now, it would be nice to see a state that had the people in mind when developing the resources that will be made available through global warming. Even as just a port between Europe and the Northwest passage, it will bring in a lot of cash and a boost to the economy.

This way, some of that money will go to the local community, instead of all of it going to multinational CEOs, a few local politicians, and (if they're lucky) the stockholders of said multinational companies.
