People By Nature Are Universally Optimistic

Despite calamities from economic recessions, wars and famine to a flu epidemic afflicting the Earth, a new study from the University of Kansas and Gallup indicates that humans are by nature optimistic.

That's good news for the new forum: everything will be alright!

There's always a downside to that metal skeleton bit.

Optimists think that this is the best possible universe, and pessimists fear that this is true.

Adamantium does whatever the guys at Marvel decide it has to do.

Eighty-nine percent of individuals worldwide expect the next five years to be as good or better than their current life, and 95 percent of individuals expected their life in five years to be as good or better than their life was five years ago

It is one of the classic plot-dependent Unobtainiums (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Unobtainium?from=Main.Unobtanium) after-all

Generally it does whatever would make Wolverine cooler, with the exception of the time Magneto used it to fuck with him and Ultimate Gambit charged his entire skeleton - but even then those were just set backs to make him seem even more badass when he overcame them.

And this proves that a bunch of people are stupid.

Meh.

And a bunch of pessimists are afraid it's true.

And this proves that the other half are too.

Cute, but false. An optimist would believe that we could do better than this, perhaps despite evidence to the contrary. A pessimist would believe that this was the best possible universe.

Anyway, I don't find humans to be universally optimistic. God knows they're not on this forum. The most common form of "optimism" towards the world as a whole seems to be the belief that one day, after a horrible armaggedon, God will cast the heathens into eternal damnation and take the True Believers or whatever to paradise. Then there's the people who believe we're all going to die (nuclear war or whatever) within our lifetimes. And those who seem to make cynicism a fad.:headbang:

I find that people tend to be either too optimistic or too cynical. Either they lie to themselves and believe that everything's going to turn out fine or at least remain as good as it is because they don't want to face the consequences (ie, "Climate Change is a myth," "If the government was doing it we'd know about it," "The Recession will just blow over"), or they have a fatalistic view that all is doomed and there's nothing we can do about it. Note that either way eliminates much of the pressure to think or act themselves, and both piss me the hell off.
