I would like to put that one mother - that melted a plasic bag around her little son's entire arm to try to get him to confess that he's a witch - in a bag with hissing and biting snakes to get her to confess she's a moron.

Meh. That's right. Meh. The sum total of my feelings on the matter. Mass abuse, torture and murder by the ignorant masses at the behest of their priests/kings/ideology/etc isn't new. If not in Congo, it'll be in Zimbabwe. Or maybe it'll be in China. Hell, it could be your neighbor, or maybe you yourself. It happens anywhere you can think of. In small doses or on the factory scale. Unjust? Horrific? Sure. But the world isn't just or fair, and no amount of hand wringing by anyone is going to change that. Might as well be a universal constant.

Most of you will get up in arms over this today, maybe hold onto it for a week, donate a couple of bucks to some group who purports to help put an end to this mess (though they could just be greedy schmucks out to sucker you). Then some new outrage will pop up and you'll forget all about it.

And why not? Suckers who never use their brains are a dime a million, and so are the sickos and frauds who'd be more than happy to take their money and their hope and turn it into whatever sick scheme they've got festering in the back of their heads. Sure as the sun rises tomorrow, there'll be some new outrage to get up in arms over. You can bet your last dollar on it.

If everyone who deserved to be dead dropped dead right now, there'd be only a fraction of people left alive in the world. Too bad that won't happen anytime soon. Not even a fraction of a fraction of those who deserve to die will ever meet their untimely ends.

Christianity forced on backwater pagan societies always turns into this kind of stuff. No one cares about witches expelled in the name of the animal spirits, but when Christianity gets adapted to it, it's big newsworthy stuff.

That's because Chistians are supposed to be above that. I agree it's bad no matter who does it, though, and i'd give everything to stop it, but it happens everywhere, Africa, America, Europe, Asia...everywhere where there are people who are afriad of the unseen, of invisible powers, and people who will exploits those people's fears for their personal gain, whether it's witch kids, demonic possessions, faith healings, or whatever.

CROWD: A witch! A witch! A witch! We've got a witch! A witch!
VILLAGER #1: We have found a witch, might we burn her?
CROWD: Burn her! Burn!
BEDEMIR: How do you know she is a witch?
VILLAGER #2: She looks like one.
BEDEMIR: Bring her forward.
WITCH: I'm not a witch. I'm not a witch.
BEDEMIR: But you are dressed as one.
WITCH: They dressed me up like this.
CROWD: No, we didn't... no.
WITCH: And this isn't my nose, it's a false one.
BEDEMIR: Well?
VILLAGER #1: Well, we did do the nose.
BEDEMIR: The nose?
VILLAGER #1: And the hat -- but she is a witch!
CROWD: Burn her! Witch! Witch! Burn her!
BEDEMIR: Did you dress her up like this?
CROWD: No, no... no ... yes. Yes, yes, a bit, a bit.
VILLAGER #1: She has got a wart.
BEDEMIR: What makes you think she is a witch?
VILLAGER #3: Well, she turned me into a newt.
BEDEMIR: A newt?
VILLAGER #3: I got better.
VILLAGER #2: Burn her anyway!
CROWD: Burn! Burn her!
BEDEMIR: Quiet, quiet. Quiet! There are ways of telling whether
she is a witch.
CROWD: Are there? What are they?
BEDEMIR: Tell me, what do you do with witches?
VILLAGER #2: Burn!
CROWD: Burn, burn them up!
BEDEMIR: And what do you burn apart from witches?
VILLAGER #1: More witches!
VILLAGER #2: Wood!
BEDEMIR: So, why do witches burn?
[pause]
VILLAGER #3: B--... 'cause they're made of wood...?
BEDEMIR: Good!
CROWD: Oh yeah, yeah...
BEDEMIR: So, how do we tell whether she is made of wood?
VILLAGER #1: Build a bridge out of her.
BEDEMIR: Aah, but can you not also build bridges out of stone?
VILLAGER #2: Oh, yeah.
BEDEMIR: Does wood sink in water?
VILLAGER #1: No, no.
VILLAGER #2: It floats! It floats!
VILLAGER #1: Throw her into the pond!
CROWD: The pond!
BEDEMIR: What also floats in water?
VILLAGER #1: Bread!
VILLAGER #2: Apples!
VILLAGER #3: Very small rocks!
VILLAGER #1: Cider!
VILLAGER #2: Great gravy!
VILLAGER #1: Cherries!
VILLAGER #2: Mud!
VILLAGER #3: Churches -- churches!
VILLAGER #2: Lead -- lead!
ARTHUR: A duck.
CROWD: Oooh.
BEDEMIR: Exactly! So, logically...,
VILLAGER #1: If... she.. weighs the same as a duck, she's made of wood.
BEDEMIR: And therefore--?
VILLAGER #1: A witch!
CROWD: A witch!
BEDEMIR: We shall use my larger scales!
[yelling]
BEDEMIR: Right, remove the supports!
[whop]
[creak]
CROWD: A witch! A witch!
WITCH: It's a fair cop.
CROWD: Burn her! Burn! [yelling]

Yea the money seems to be the main culprit. I mean, a child there is declared a witch if they have big eyes. WTF??

But things like this happen when a religion is based on actual people. (like Jesus or Mohamad)

Yea the money seems to be the main culprit. I mean, a child there is declared a witch if they have big eyes. WTF??

Bolded for truth.^^

It's like any other crime or scam -- follow the money to see what's really behind it all. Even during the European Christian witch crazes, profit motive was never absent from the picture, because the church, the crown, even those who brought accusations against their neighbors, all stood to benefit by the taking of the accused's property and assets. For example, in the last big Christian witch scare, the Salem Witch Trials, every single one of the accused, whether they were convicted and hanged or released later as innocent, all had their assets taken, and the ones who divvied up the loot were the neighbors who accused them, the sheriff who arrested and tortured them, and the judge who tried them.

Follow the money, every single time.

Fear of hexes and "evil sendings" is one of the main weaknesses of the old pagan religions, but lately (meaning the last century or two), I have to say that Christian churches/missionaries have shown a disgusting readiness to exploit that failing for both profit and power.

In the old ways, a shaman/sorcerer could only blame a community's problems on witchcraft up to a point where it did not threaten the peace and stability of the community -- i.e. have them essentially sacrificing their children. At the very least, that potentially horrific flaw came with a safety valve because the authority claiming witchcraft and the power to dispell it was not himself seen as connected to any divine force different than the supposed witches. So he could be kicked out just as readily as an accused witch if he pushed the tolerance of the community too far. Witchcraft accusations definitely fall under a "he who smelt it, dealt it" rule, in which the one who is causing the conflict and creating the threat comes to be seen as the accuser, not the accused.

But these Christian priests/ministers claim a connection to divinity that comes with a massive penalty for resistance. When you are dealing with a congregation superstitious enough already to believe in witches, that is a major problem. There is almost no limit to what such a leader could pressure such people to do.
