Do You Know What Your Sin Is?

"Do you know what your sin is?" That's a great line from the science-fiction / space-western "Serenity".

I sometimes think folks on the left would be more understanding of Christians if we called ourselves, "Sinners Anonymous".

Anyway, this is just a poll / topic for talking about those things we have problems with. Some folk like to think in terms of "The Seven Deadly Sins". I tend to think some of the Seven are aspects of one another.

The last "foaming at the mouth" preacher I heard was Rev. Wright, the President's old pastor. Of course, there is that one guy who thinks soldiers are being killed in Iraq because of society's more relaxed views on homosexuality.

Liberal Christians, I'm certain, are sincere in their faith. Conservative Christians tend to wonder where they draw the line at regarding sins. Fundamentalist Christians? I may know some, but I think they've toned down some.

Flaws and sins of course.

Ones I find most dangerous - Pride, Wrath, Envy and Greed..

But envy and greed can be recognized immediately or you can learn to recognize them and do whatever you need to resolve it.

Pride on the other hand can go unnoticed for long periods and have disastrous consequences. A prideful person will be downright oblivious to their actions.

Wrath .. can be similar to pride and again make the person oblivious.

As a kid I reckon I exhibited many of those qualities. Probably wrath most and lust least. I'm not sure I've lusted after anyone in my entire life. Some psychologist might say that it's because my parents had a messy divorce and that as a result I have little desire to form relationships with other people. None of those 'sins' seem all that bad when taken in moderation. I suppose some of it preclude moderation, but I believe the implication would be to generally strike them down as being bad. Gluttony? Food is huge part of my life, I love taste, I love the experience of eating. I may be overweight and starting to shift that, but that's where exercise, not denial, comes in. Sloth? How do we even determine this? Isn't that entirely subjective? I mean someone who works a part time job, studies at university and volunteers for something might consider someone who just has a part time job to have a lot of 'idle' time but who are either of them to judge as to what is slothful?

Wrath gives me the giggles. Not only for the hypocrisy of it being a sin, but because anybody who considers wrath a bad idea is someone who hasn't had cause to need it as an ally. You ask any oppressed peoples whether wrath is a bad thing and let me hear your answer.

At the end of the day, we must go forward with hope and not backward by fear and division.

The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians

Well, I'm not certain I agree with all of that Robertson stuff, like witchcraft, but the guy really isn't far off. When's the last time you saw N.O.W. effectively standing up for women? Did they stand up for Paula Jones, Anita Broderick or Kathleen Willey? No. Did they stand up for the victims of O.J. Simpson, Ron Brown and Nicole Simpson? No. The one woman who did, former Los Angeles N.O.W. chapter president, Tammy Bruce, was railed and screamed at because National N.O.W. was sucking up to the greater liberal agenda.

But, yeah, Robertson was dead on in describing the modern liberal feminist agenda as politically socialist, not concerned with starting or maintaining families and pro-abortion.

Oh... I'm just so very crushed. That was such a biting retort to the truths that I presented. How will I ever recover?

Are you such a coward that you can't use my entire quote and keep everything in context? Seems like it.

What "truths that you presented"? You just argued that the only real problem you have with the statement, "The feminist agenda is not about equal rights for women. It is about a socialist, anti-family political movement that encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians" is the WITCHCRAFT. That's just so colossally silly that it's hard to see any merit in debating you. It would be like arguing with someone who has seriously just alleged that the stated agenda of the Republican party is to destroy all human life. What can you really say to that beyond, "Um....no...it's not"?

But hey, you can totally point to where N.O.W. has said, "Hey women! Go murder your toddlers, make out with a chick, and stop buying things, RIGHT NOW!" and prove me wrong, if you like.

Phelps, mentioned. Pat Robertson & James Dobson, a little kooky at times but foaming?!?!?

[Planned Parenthood] "is teaching kids to fornicate, teaching people to have adultery, every kind of bestiality, homosexuality, lesbianism – everything that the Bible condemns." --Pat Robertson

"You say you're supposed to be nice to the Episcopalians and the Presbyterians and the Methodists and this, that, and the other thing. Nonsense, I don't have to be nice to the spirit of the Antichrist." --Pat Robertson

"The Islamic people, the Arabs, were the ones who captured Africans, put them in slavery, and sent them to America as slaves. Why would the people in America want to embrace the religion of slavers." --Pat Robertson

"Homosexuals are not monogamous. They want to destroy the institution of marriage. It will destroy marriage. It will destroy the Earth." --James Dobson

Jerry Falwell, dead for two years. Paul Weyrich, dead.

Yes, eventually people do die. Are they then no longer part of your history? Because if so, you're going to want to strike "Christ" off that list.

Pat Buchanon, not a preacher.

I never mentioned preachers. I side "our side" has fewer foaming-at-the-mouth fundamentalists. YOU introduced the word "preacher". If you want to admit to shifting your goalposts now, feel free.

When's the last time you saw N.O.W. effectively standing up for women?

Right now, yesterday, a year ago, five years ago... how far back do you want to go? They lobby for family planning, reproductive rights, rights of lesbians, Title IX... honestly, was that supposed to be a tough question?

Did they stand up for Paula Jones, Anita Broderick or Kathleen Willey? No. Did they stand up for the victims of O.J. Simpson, Ron Brown and Nicole Simpson? No.

Source, source and source. Source, source and source.

But, yeah, Robertson was dead on in describing the modern liberal feminist agenda as politically socialist

Buzzword alert! We're not sure what socialist is, but it's bad and feminists are it!

not concerned with starting or maintaining families and pro-abortion.

Which is why they do so much lobbying for family planning, why they're RIGHT NOW lobbying for more parental leave from jobs. Because they're not concerned with families.

I know it's a scary place, but try looking around at the world, just every once in awhile.

Let's see

Greed not so much I am pretty content.
Envy not so much I am pretty content.
Lust at one time maybe but not so much anymore
Gluttony mostly in the drink category, again I am never sure where the line is?
Sloth either spiritual apathy or laziness, again I am never sure where the line is?
Wrath I am pretty even keel and patient, in fact I try to avoid conflict for the most part
Pride/hubris I think I am pretty down to earth but I may be deluded

I could say I am not a sinner anymore because I believe in Jesus and have asked for forgiveness but you may imply from that that I did not sin in the first place or that I am denying that I am a sinner, in which case I am a sinner and have sinned.

I went with I am not sure which I need the most help with because i would need help in this regard.

Front runner is probably sloth.
