Alternate Reality Game

So, I was playing around with Stumble! (I am addicted to this thing, it's not helping my ADD at all, lol) and I came across Urban Sleuth (http://urbansleuth.net/splash) which I guess is a cross between one of those shows you go to where you try to solve a mystery while eating, and tour guide. However, I thought it was pretty interesting, however I don't have an IPhone, and I don't feel like finding out how much it'll drain my bank account either.

So I googled "Alternative Reality" and I gotta say, I'm interested, so has anyone else taken part in "Alternative Reality gaming?"

Isn't that what one does when playing World of Warcraft and the like?

Alternate reality games normally require more suspension of disbelief. They try and integrate into the regular world. It's a game that pretends it isn't a game.

I see. I'm not much of a gamer. Save the Final Fantasy games I've played and the Kingdom Hearts and Katamari Damacy, my video game experience isn't that vast.

*nods* I've been gaming for years. You're missing out! :P

On topic, I've never really participated in ARGs (<3 the acronym) much because I'm absolutely awful at puzzles. I don't really enjoy them. I like the whole pretending that the whole thing is real though. I like being able to immerse myself in something fictional like that. It's much better escapism than replaying the same levels in some other game.

Perhaps one of these days I'll give 'em a try.

Royal Rainbow!!!

On topic: I've been considering putting together an ARG online for a while, but I lack the time and technical skill to do it. I've had a couple of ideas I've been mulling around.

If anyone's interested, I think I've got the link for a big ARG forum somewhere. I can fish it up later.

We <3 Katamari is one of my all time favorite games. Especially the two-player co-op mode, which starts out fine and then quickly becomes
"Damnit, we need to go right!"
"No dude, we gotta go left!"
"Argh! Turn around! Turn around!"

After about 30 seconds. :D

I know! I used to play it with my ex and we always ended up fighting over the direction of the katamari.

Cool beans.

Yeah I figure if I ever actually finish writing one of my various projects I might try and put an ARG together to promote it. I think in the past few attempts I've had at brainstorming a game, it doesn't work if there isn't something real to tie it in to.

It's so much worse after you've been drinking. You're bad enough at the controls at this point, and communication goes out the window.

Now, if Katamari Damacy were an ARG, I would totally play it. :p

It'll be a few years in the making, since my writing has sort of taken a back seat at the moment to lab work and GURPS, but if and when I put it together, I'll let y'all know.

Do these ARG take place in your city, or can they take place anywhere and everywhere?

I wrote, organised and programmed an ARG called Disunity about two years ago, that took place over about nine websites. Unfortunately, it became far too large for one person to handle effectively and I had to abandon it before the plot finished :(

Probably the most mainstream attempt at an ARG was Electronic Arts' Majestic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Majestic_(video_game)). Subscribers could arrange to have their work numbers called at certain times to get actual clues pertaining to the game in real time.

Adorable/hilarious/addictive. There's something really charming about chasing down mobs of screaming cartoon Japanese people and squashing them into a ball. :p

Ugg. I like to keep my games and reality sepperate. I play games for stuff I can't get in everyday life, and I don't want my games to have pretensions of real life.

So in answer to the OP question: no, not my thing.
