The Internet and discourse.

Inspired by a Myrmi post in which he figured (rightly) that I'm a lot more personable without a keyboard in front of me (and I answered that the same is likely for him).

Register changes online - and even from person to person. Online someone tends to be at its lowest. With people who might give me money for translating to them, I'm a fucking saint. In here, I call arguing moves, am sarcastic and ironic.

What about you, NSG? What differences in tone and level of formality do you have online to personally? This isn't a "let's hammer on the Great Internet Fuckwad Theory" thread, this is just an attempt to measure such a distance.

I'm exactly the same online as off, except that I also, like Ryadn, curse less in cyberland than in realityville. Unlike Neesika, however, I hear nearly as many bullshit theories about me spoken to my face as posted in this forum (in realityland, they usually come from guys who have just figured out that I'm not going to have sex with them, ever, or from women who have just lost a pissing contest with me). However, in reality, I am more likely to just tell the offender to go fuck themselves and die than I would here -- because in reality there are no mods to tell me that isn't an appropriate response (because it is entirely appropriate).

Im more or less the same online and in person. The difference is, on NSG, I tend to view most people here as faceless ideologies rather then individual, complex people. Therefore, I tend to be a lot more aggressive and antagonistic towards said people.

Once I develop common ground with a poster on things other then politics, however, my reaction towards them completely changes, and Im a lot less inflammitory and more civil in debate (which is how I am when discussing politics in person with my friends).

See Neo Bret and me for a classic example. I view him as a person on the other end of another comp, because we have established non-political common ground, so discussions are more civil then they are when I deal with people such as New Mitanni (not to compare Neo Bret and NM politically, as Neo Bret as...well...nevemind, you know what I mean) whom I have never established common ground with, and probably never will.

The main difference is that online I'll actually say something, rather than sitting in the corner staring blankly out the window in a daze a million miles away from any conversation that happens to be going on.

If anyone does talk to me, my main reaction is to go "eep" and agree with the speaker without actually knowing whats going on, or to reply in a way that indicates that I've fundamentally misheard whatever the other person was on about, leading to acute social embarassment.

If you're south of Hadrian's Wall, then your area was ruled by the romans from ~43 AD to ~400 AD. And, IIRC, Kent is extreme southeast England.

I've noticed this with the limited interaction that you and I have. You do seem to have mellowed somewhat, but then, maybe you're just getting laid a lot and don't have the energy.

The Romans had a habit of letting local rulers remain in power provided they sent money and tribute in to Rome. In return legions might show up to support the ruler if the local populace became unruly. It is similar to the relationship between Qing China and Tibet, OR Qing China and Korea. So to say It is or it wasn't a part of Rome is a bit of a gray area.

That's why I also listed Korea.
Largely whether history views the area as part of the country or not depends on if the successor state exerts control over the region.
The Qing and roman empires both had some similarities the core of their empires were pretty close to modern nation states. But the frontiers were pretty distant from being nation states.
