Family First...

A Chinese police official has been arrested for stealing another girl's exam results and passing it off as his daughter's to ensure her a place in college, a newspaper said on Wednesday.

Competition for college places is fierce in China where stories of cheating surface every year. Students pay for leaked exam papers, smuggle in mobile phones and electronic dictionaries, or pay others to take the exam for them. (http://www.reuters.com/article/oddlyEnoughNews/idUSTRE54C4VP20090513)

Just a thought, but wouldn't it be more productive to put that kind of effort into their work so that they'd actually know the subject matter and thus get the grades for real?

And if wishes were horses, even beggars would ride.

More productive is one thing and a thing that cuts into your precious personal time, and if Daddy can just get the results for you, hey, why not? It's only a problem when Daddy gets caught at it.

It's not that simple. Especially in Asian cultures, doing well is not just seen as a personal matter, it's a family duty. To fail in school is to (literally) fail at life. Being unsuccessful means disgracing your entire family. Consider also the competition that exists in China for those jobs: everyone is trying to get those jobs and the motivation is more than just personal. Cheating, or helping your children cheat, may mean the difference between being competent but passed over because of a mistake or two and being hired for that high-paying, non-disgraceful job.

I wouldn't be surprised if, like still happens in a lot of continental European exams, your grade is relative to the scores of everyone else in your class - ie the top 10% get As (for example). As such, it may not be enough to just study hard, it's also reliant on you being better than everyone else... adds another dimension to the whole thing

And now the guy is a famous felon that did something terrible to a girl in a Chinese prison.

If I were the girl, I'd smile. And tell my opponent that her daddy is, likely, being raped right now.

Because of her.

Y'know, I guess I'm pretty skilled at mind rape (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MindRape).

China's examination hell is the product of thousands of years of exams, it's the same in Japan and Korea where EVERYTHING is tied into what college you attend.

As much as people knock the US system, it at leads allows you a chance to change your mind and go back and get an education and a new job later on and while going to an ivy league school looks good, it's not a make or break for a career. The system in East Asian allows for none of that.

Wherever and whenever there is competition for limited resources or a fear of not reaching expectations this kind of behaviour or worse will happen. Remove these kinds of social pressures and we will begin to be free to reach our full personal potentials. Exams are a testiment to a system in which reward does not accurately reflect effort and success is at the expense of failure.
