Thunderstorms

Inspired by an almost-thunderstorm (In other words: A thunderstorm you hear in the distance but passes right by you :() that we had today, what do you think of thunderstorms? Like them or hate them? I can see why some people dislike them, but I can get very gloomy without them. I love just standing out in a rain jacket during a particularly strong thunderstorm, feeling the patter of rain on my face, the blow of the wind against me, the flash of the lightning and the roar of the thunder... *sigh* Even just watching a thunderstorm approach would be nice.

So, opinion?

I like thunderstorms as long as they don't knock out my power.

I generally ignore them; the exception is the really big ones, in which case I unplug to avoid the risk of having my electronics fried.

It all depends on where you live... If I lived in one of the tornado-prone areas, I'd hate them.

So far I like to watch one out of the window, but not actually be under it outside.

I love them, and I live on the highest floor of my apartment (technically it's 13, but officially it's PH). I really like the big *BOOM* of the thunder that comes before the lightning... or is it the other way around...?

Hmmm... I thought something was wrong when I kept thinking about Lightning McQueen and that "Everyone knows lightning comes before the thunder."

EDIT: Anyway, I just like the *BOOM* sound.

Light travels at 186,282.397 miles pers second and sound travels at a relatively slow speed of one mile in five seconds.

Flash then boom. :)

It used to be nice to watch a T-Storm with a Pink Floyd record playing and a splash of amaretto in my coffee till this (http://www.noaanews.noaa.gov/stories2008/20080619_climatereport.html) became a factor.

I feel so sorry for you. *hugs*

I love thunderstorms, the crack of lightning, the roll of thunder the ticking of the seconds to see how far away the lightning was, and the continuation of that after each deep boom to see if it is getting closer of further away.

It is enjoyable to sit outside on the front veranda and see the rain pelt down, the trees flail every which way as the wind pulls them to and fro. To await with anticipation a lightning bolt that screams look at me while I dance across the sky. At night you await the lightning to break open the dark and allow you to see a glimpse of your surroundings.

And after the last drop has fallen and the sun once again gives us the light, and the birds begin to sing to the heavens, it is just as beautiful. To step outside and walk across wet grass and breathe in clean fresh air that the storm has provided though the dowsing of our pollutants and to know that in a few weeks our flowers will be blooming a grass will be lush, green and thick and you sit back down and you know that you have just experienced the awesomeness of mother nature.

Mmmm, that needs a bit of work but you get my point.

Eh, for one, I don't like the aftermath. It seems so... So... Anticlimactic, and ugly. The beauty of the actual storm, the feeling of the rain against your face... So much better.

Oh of course of course the actual storm is excellent and to be in one is simply awesome especially sitting on the front veranda watching it happen (better than any TV show), however, I was just pointing out the entire experience and the next day how the outside world feels is different and makes me feel good inside.

Besides I was going for something poetic  :)

I'm a big fan of thunderstorms. I find them invigorating and inspiring. All that electricity. Gets my brain revved.

On the other hand, I've just spent two weeks complaining how much I hate the rain in Massachusetts. We haven't had a good banging thunderstorm in ages around here. What we get instead is nature just being evil. There's no such thing as a quiet rainy day in this accursed state. If it's raining, no matter how lightly, then it's also blowing gale force winds in chaotic, swirling gusts, defeating any attempt to remain even partially dry and somehow managing to spit in your face no matter which way you're facing. I suppose the sky beings think they're being fucking funny or something. The bastards.

There are also precious few really good thunderstorms, with lots of flash and bang and drama -- the kinds of storms you could use to animate a sewn-together monster. Nope, what we get are nor-easters, which is New England speak for Biblically shitty weather. Two to three days of continuously...well, basically, getting pissed and shat on from the sky. That's basically it. No thunder, no gorgeous and thrilling arcs and flashes. Just drenching, drowning rain and that horrible, horrible, relentless, unending wind.

Oh, and in my neighborhood, every time there is lightning, it sets a house on fire.

I miss the storms in NYC, where my neighborhood got struck by lightning all the time becuase of the terrain, but as long as you were not on the phone or your computer, you were fairly safe because the buildings were properly grounded. And the storms in the Vermont mountains which were Hollywood-esque, they were so perfect and violent.

Depends on where I am. I generally love a good thunderstorm (My wife is terrified by them though); however, when I'm home in Nevada, I fear them. They bring the wildfires.

LG/Nanatsu/Myrth/Waffles. This option mystified me. (Though I know all but one of the people/things/concepts/ideas/whatevers contained within it.)

I like to go riding around during thunderstorms. Especially on a dirt-bike. (Talk about all the crazy shit you can do while the mud is fresh/still getting wet. <.<)

Until they bring tornadoes. Then I get slightly...nervous. xD

T-storms are indeed awesome. However they're sadly rare here in the land of Wa - geography's not right to get them often enough.

As for me, I love Thunderstorms. I want my house to have a screen in porch so that I can watch the thunderstorms roll by.

I like them as long as I'm not having to drive/cycle/walk through them. Being under cover and watching is great fun. Quite rare here, just drizzle instead.

Heh. I've posted on NSG during thunderstorms before. Had to stop because the shelter I choose was less than effective and my laptop got rained on.

Love thunderstorms, indeed most storms just something about the pure untamed violence of the weather - shame what we usually get is just typical damp, windy and miserable British weather.

I think the only exception however to my love of storms is when they happen if I'm a LARP event - because you can never get anything dry. I was LARPing during the massive storms a couple of years ago (when everything flooded), that was not pleasant I can tell you.
