The origin of your NS nickname.

Nanatsu no Tsuki
11-05-2009, 00:26
Heck, I'm sure this thread's been done before but... I'm bored and Galloism's playing Final Fantasy XII, which, incidentally, lead to the creation of this thread.

My point, I was reading through the game guide, because I had nothing else to do, and I realized that one of the monsters you fight on that game (FF XII) is named... ta ta ta ta!, Ardchoille (I think:confused:) So... since one of our mods seems to be named after said monster, I became curious and decided to ask you, esteemed NSG, what's the meaning behind your nicknames (if they have one) and why did you decide to use them?

I'll start with mine. Nanatsu no Tsuki means Seven Moons or Septimal Moon, and it's the name of a fighter/sacrifice organization in Kouga Yun's manga "Loveless". I liked the name, I liked the way it sounded in Japanese so, I decided to go by it here.
Antilon
11-05-2009, 00:27
Ant-ilon is derived from Ant-lion, and is proof that I need to get my eyeglasses fixed.
The Romulan Republic
11-05-2009, 00:31
I chose mine when I joined a Star Trek RP and decided to create a new nation, since my existing one at the time was modern tech. I chose Romulan Republic because I was playing Romulans, found them more impressive than some other Trek factions, and was interested in the idea of a more democratic Romulan nation (they have a Senate after all, and I played them very democratically).

The name works in the sense that it reflects somewhat both my interests in sci-fi, and my political views.
Dragontide
11-05-2009, 00:31
I was looking into information about Alabama football and global warming. :D
Jordaxia
11-05-2009, 00:32
to essentially cut/paste from the other thread about this on the other general forum...

Jordan is my middle name - It's taken by the real country. X makes everything cooler, so Jordax. but that doesn't sound enough like a country. So Jordaxia. Everything is better. pronounced Jor-Daze-ee-ah.

Mine was just an off-the-cuff bit of silliness designed to sound like it could be a small Pacific island nation or something, only, y'know, not.
NERVUN
11-05-2009, 00:48
I should just write this down somewhere and copy and paste it. NERVUN was ment to be NERV (From Evangelion) but that had already been taken and then NERV-UN, but for some reason the game was having a hissy fit when it came to the hyphen so NERVUN it came to be. Since NERVUN was originally supposed to be the anthisiss of how I would run a nation (Meaning I did everything basakwards) I just never cared about it enough to ask for Mod intervention to get the hyphen until I had already established the name as NERVUN.

Oddly enough, I never ment to start posting with this name either. I wanted to use my main nation, but because of the weird login issue between NS and the forum, I kept forgetting to switch nation names and well... 10,000+ posts later I'm more or less stuck with it.
The Plutonian Empire
11-05-2009, 00:50
I was obsessed with going to Pluto and building an inter-galactic empire.
Big Jim P
11-05-2009, 00:56
An old nickname from the Ween song, and the fact that most of my friends were bigger than me.
Conserative Morality
11-05-2009, 00:57
I was a Conservative at the time (And dark times they were), and I wanted to make a statement about my ignorance, I suppose. Not to say Conservatives are ignorant, but I most certainly was. I was too tired to properly type it up, so I gladly forgot about Nationstates for a bit, and came back a few monthes later, after I say how the Conservatives were really doing. In a mockery of my former idea, I left out the V.

Or I was really tired at the time. I'll never tell which one!

Lunatic Goofballs
11-05-2009, 01:37
'Lunatic Goofballs' is the nearest English pronunciation of a Sanskrit phrase meaning, "He who showers and still finds mud where mud doesn't belong"

Actually, 'Goofball' is one of my longest running and least offensive nicknames.

Well it's all about making a country and such. And I'd thought I'd make a utopia but eh... not a very good one.

It's funny, you know. When I decided to go by my NS name, I didn't take into consideration much that it was to be the name of a country in a forum/game server. I guess some people put more thought into these things than others. And your NS name makes a whole lot more sense to me, as a nation name now, than it did before.
Blouman Empire
11-05-2009, 01:55
I had got back from Germany, and had decided to come back to the game. I wanted to RP a nation that was similar to the Prussian Empire but different.

I came up with my name looking for something like German. The word for flowers in german is Blumen and sounds similar to blooming, I took it from there adding the 'o' and making it 'man' instead of 'men'

Kyronea
11-05-2009, 04:12
Kyronea is one of my many random syllable-strung-together-names I came up with back when I was at the level of George Lucas naming.

I think I'm now up to "names that are at least somewhat inventive/actually sound like names" level.
Ryadn
11-05-2009, 04:13
The Ryadn are a nation of semi-nomads in Shirley Meier's "Fifth Millennium" series.
Gauntleted Fist
11-05-2009, 04:16
My name was thought up while watching Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

When King Arthur was fighting the Black Knight, I just happened to be signing up on the forum, and I saw him cut off the Black Knight's arm.

And, in some corner of my mind, "Gauntleted Fist" popped up as an adequate user name.

Then I got the nickname "GF". (Something abpit some guy messing with his mom talking to his "gf" (Me.) and wanting to stay up later, or something. I forget.)
Heinleinites
11-05-2009, 05:37
Mine came from the fact that Starship Troopers and The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress are two of my all-time favorite books. Plus, a lot of my political/philosophical views run in sync with Heinlein's(among others).

I could make up an interesting story about some strange meaning.

Sorry. *walks away*

Heh, silly people. That's why it's a SILLY name designed to sound like it could be some little island nation. As several folks on here have told me, if they read it quickly and weren't paying close attention, all they really registered was "Polisomethinga" - until one day they actually sounded it out, and got the stupid joke. :p
Cabra West
11-05-2009, 08:45
When I was still in Dublin, I used to live in an area that's called Cabra.
Cabra was already taken as a nick, so I went for Cabra West.

I recently found out that Cabra apparently means goat in Spanish, which highly amused me :D

Wilgrove is the name of the first airport I flew out of.
Holy Cheese and Shoes

Peepelonia
11-05-2009, 12:05
Easy really. I'm a Socialist deep down, so a land ruled by the people for the people, just has to be named Peepelonia. And the misspelling? Well part on porpose, part the dyslexic thing.
German Nightmare
11-05-2009, 12:07
I got mine when I played football with the Falcons in the NCISAA.

"German" because I was the only German on the team (and everybody expected me to know how to play well - yeah, right)
and
"Nightmare" because my coach said I was a nightmare (for him, our team and the opponents).

I guess what he wanted to say was that I didn't play nice(ly) and got the job done.

Hence German Nightmare. Ever been since, will never change. http://www.studip.uni-goettingen.de/pictures/smile/kaffee.gif
Eofaerwic
11-05-2009, 12:16
I wanted Eoforwic, being the Saxon name for York, or Eboracum, being the Roman name. Since both these were taken, I bastardized it into Eofaerwic and thus became the poster with the most unpronounceable name (probably).

Xsyne
11-05-2009, 13:10
I could not think of a name, so I pressed letters on my keyboard at random, or at least as random as I could. Once I reached "Xsy" I thought of a way to turn it into something remotely pronounceable. And so, here I am. I must admit, I do have a slightly more interesting story to tell this time around.

Smunkeeville
11-05-2009, 14:51
Smunkee is my name, well, my nickname, but more people know me as "Smunkee" than they do my real name, basically only my husband and his family call me my first name, everyone else calls me Smunkee. I have a weird cult following around here.*

I added the suffix because I like Powerpuff girls and they live in "townsville" so I thought adding "-ville" to it would make it sound kinda city-like. I have another country that I used to RP with, never posted in General with it, never posted in II with this one, didn't connect them and won't ever.

OMFG! I did something right!!!!!!

Given that the name was mashed up from latin and english, the german pronunciation only has a 1/4 chance of actually being the right one from a simplified perspective. after all, latin did not really influence the germanic languages, only the romance languages, and german was only one of many contributing languages to english. So the odds that this word is best pronounced in german are actually not all that good.

Of course I say this purely on the basis of stupid lols, since it's Eofaerwic who gets to decide how to pronounce her own damn name :D

I've seen you post for too long to assume anything contrary to "very intelligent and well reasoned", sorry.

I pronounced it almost like you said except the "ia" at the end became a short a sound because of my bias.....see many laides in my family has an "ia" at the end of their name but it's a short a.

Lenora in our family is Lanoria, Lisa is Lesia, and so on.

But yes, I believe the name of York changed with successive invasions mostly because the newcomers had difficulty pronouncing the previous version hence Eboracum -> Eoforwic -> Yorvik -> York.
Pirated Corsairs
11-05-2009, 16:10
When I first started NS, I had gotten really into Puzzle Pirates and had been referred to the game by a fellow player, and so wanted a piratey name. So I tried different combinations of different words for pirate until one worked. I only ever thought I'd play for a few days anyway, but I ended up here instead.

South Lorenya
11-05-2009, 17:49
Long, long ago, I needed a bunch of place names for a Zelda fanfic (which, of course, was ruined when Nintendo released ZOOT story details a few months later...), so I mashed letters together until they satisfied me. I happened to especially like Lorenya, so long ago, I created a nation with the name Lorenya. I lost interest, and let it died., I eventually created a new one, but since "Lorenya" was taken (by me), I created South Lorenya.

If anyone cares, the other names from long, long ago were Calasta, Darantol, Tranora, and Torano.

I always thought it was just the old Middle Eastern country Mitanni: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitanni but modern, hence the New.

That's the ultimate origin of the name but not of the reference. In the book, the founders of the country wanted a name that wasn't linked to any political bloc, so they dug deep into ancient history and came up with Mitanni.

I'm not sure the original Mitanni had much to recommend it, but the fictional one certainly does IMO.

I've finally read "Loveless". Rather good.

No chance of that here - the University is a bird sanctuary, the University treats killing one of the birds as worse than killing a fellow students. After all, if you kill a fellow students, once you've served your time, you can re-apply. If you kill one of the birds, then you are expelled for life.
