Okay I am a tragic nostalgic at heart, and after an unrelated conversation with a friend about a two decades old movie I was reminded of a show from my childhood. I don’t remember much about it, but I seem to have the impression that it involved a talking armchair, or maybe it was just an armchair that was alive.

The show was kind of freaky (although maybe that was just me), and I think it was about someone who would tell surreal tales (but then maybe that was an entirely different programme). Sorry, this isn’t much to go by. I’m from Australia, so it might have been an ABC/BBC production.

Go on, General, rise to the occasion!

*watches opening theme on youtube*

Um, nope not that...

This armchair (if it was an armchair, and not a chest of drawers or a dressing table) was distinctly old-fashioned, I think.

This is why Pee Wee first came to mind.

Was this program developed in Australia, or in USA?

There's a German show that has a talking suitcase (http://www.tivi.de/fernsehen/siebenstein/start/index.html) and is apparently from 1988, maybe they sold that to Oz as well? Or maybe talking inanimate furniture-like objects is just an international trend in children's television.

Was it that show that also involved the hot water bottle and vaccuum cleaner? It was slightly creepy, if I remember correctly... Johnson and Friends it was called. Can't remember if that had a talking cupboard/chest of drawers/armchair/toybox.

It might help if the OP told us if this was some time in the early 1960's or a few months ago.

That could be it I loved that show, however, the only non-toy that talked was Alfred the water bottle. Just don't touch his banana peel :p

Xirnium when was it shown on TV?

Thank you to all who’ve offered suggestions! Wonderful enthusiasm, even if none of you have quite picked out the one I was thinking of.

This show would probably have been from the early half of the nineties, I imagine. I’m not thinking of an anthropomorphic object in the brightly-coloured, innocent childhood vein of Johnson and Friends, but much more like, say, the spellbook from Hocus Pocus.

Anyway, I’m beginning to suspect I might have been the only person ever to have seen it. Or imagined it.

lol don't fell lighthearted you have me intrigued now as well.

As for your last sentence I had the same feeling over a show from my childhood (coincidentally on the same channel ABC and in the same area) it ended up being Puddlemere lane but this isn't the one you seek.

Was it a cartoon? Or live-action?
