Me I love it, 'specialy if it comes in an onion gravy with peas, and some mash.

Ohhh kindey, ohh yes! Man steak and klidney pudding!

I never used to eat kidney, I had one of mine out when I was a kid and it always seemed a little odd to me, but I got over that.

Put it through a grinder then maybe and add a lot of spices. Liverwurst is not to bad. Pate. I know it is goose liver but what is the difference? Sausages.

I dunno, I've never cared for the texture of liver, it's less firm than a banana, even. I've had liver and bacon a few times, and it's not like I'll avoid it, but I'll not actively seek it out.

Liver is OK, with onions, carrot & turnip and mashed potatos with loads of butter.

Liver AND bacon? Never heard before. I'll give it a try as I like them both.

Usually I have my liver fried in butter. Or stewed with onions (fegato alla veneziana).

Liver has lots of iron, iron will make you strong like iron.

*random question - has anyone else noticed that the richer someone is, the more random crap they eat, stuff that no sane person would touch. Fish eggs, distended and sick goose liver, mushrooms dug up by pigs, etc.*

A very, very delicate fishy taste, and it's the softest meat I've ever eaten. A texture akin to a raw oyster, maybe. I've tried Greek-style spicy tomato octopus too, and that was a little tougher, the suckers got stuck in my teeth.

It perhaps comes from the history. Offal spoils faster than red meat, so, before refrigeration, it had a higher risk of being spoiled by the time a non-farmer would get it.

Maybe it's also the American preference for grilled and roasted foods, while offal is normally boiled.

Other than that, there is no rational reason to avoid offal. It's not some exotic, special or "edgy" food, once cooked, it looks and feels (this is to people who haven't eaten it) largely like meat, but with better texture and without bones. Actually, if anything, kidneys or hearts would fall much lower on the gross-meter than meat.

I'll see your casu marzu and raise you some balut (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balut_(egg))
I'm not too interested, but I think I could try out the balut. Particularly an earlier-stage one.

Casu Marzu on the other hand is outright insane. It doesn't just look like something that shouldn't be eaten, it actually is toxic and leads to your infestation by these larvae. This is on the top of my list of REALLY gross foods.

The longer that the topic of liver stays alive, the more time for the search engine in the gray matter has to search through old folders and sure enough, it came up with this recollection from Portnoy's Complaint:

Roth is at his wildest here. Using the very singular point of view of Alexander Portnoy, a 33-year-old, sexually obsessed, guilt-ridden, nearly self-hating Jew who wants nothing more than to rid himself of his parents' overbearing influence, Roth channels a thousand different voices and skips back and forth in time to tell us Portnoy's life story. Mostly, we learn about his family life, romantic conquests and sexual proclivities -- which include the hilarious and unfortunate tale of a piece of raw liver!
Which also included a ladies pair of panties. Shudder.

One of the great things about being an alpha male, but not an animal, is that I'm not hard-wired to continously assert my dominance over the pack, so I can forgo eating the body's crapsack to prove my bad-assedness. Just one of the many ways being people is better than being a animal.
