I've been Stimulated!

I'm so excited!!! And I put it straight into the bank. Just like we were told not to. I'm looking to use it for holidays and such like.

So Aussies of the NSG world! Have you received your distract...I mean stimulus money yet? What are your plans? Was it a good idea? Or a bad one? Why?

I tend to think that it was about as good an idea as the last one. Alcohol-related violence in Tennant Creek increased exponentially the weekend of the last stimulus payment, pokie use increased markedly, among other things. They would have been far better off spending the money on job creation, and support for business. But I'm no economist.

I have got my first stimulus for being a student.

Yet to get my second stimulus for being a taxpayer.

Just spent the first $950 on bills and going out and having a good time. Basically just spent it on normal stuff, the next lot will more than likely be the same.

I never got the last stimulus package because being a student meant I was not subject to inflation (for some twisted reason by the government) but one of the lots my parents got they brought me a LCD TV and since I brought it at cost the entire amount went overseas. Japan liked getting some money from the Australian government.

so how much money did you get?

$950 for all people on government benefits (except those on the dole)

$950 for people earning between $6,000 and about $50,000

$500 for those earning between $50,001 and $80,000

$250 for those earning $80,001 and $99,999

$950 Recipients of Family Tax Benefit Part A with a child aged 4-18 years old that is per child and those who receive carer payment or disability payment.

$950 for farmers who have been deemed to be suffering hardship

$900 for families receiving tax benefit B

I think the largest amount a total family will receive is just under $6,000 dollars all tax free.

That's pretty amazing (I'll have to look up the exchange rate to see how it would affect me if I lived there)

Are we to expect a lot of drunken posting from Aussie NSGers now:)

lol quite possibly, some will save it some will throw it in the pokies others will drink it away.

The place mentioned in the OP is primarily an aboriginal community where drinking and other drug abuse is a problem with this extra money they decided to get maggoted.

It didn't work twice in the US.

Hell, the first $300 I got, I spent in Victoria, BC, Canada. My way of saying "thanks for nothing". All $300 did was remind me of how fucked I was.

Well this is the second time it is happening here in Australia, with the possibility of a third.

Of course there are other ways to encourage spending but they don't get nearly as much poll support.

I didn't get the last stimulus because I actually worked instead of being a leech on the economy. And I wouldn't have been eligible, even if I were studying because my parents earnt too much for me or them to get government benefits.

I think it sucks that taxpayers constantly are forking out to welfare bludgers and those already receiving our money. Seriously, wouldn't it have been sensible to give it to those working and earning above a certain amount that can therefore use the money as KRudd intended? On the economy.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. A leech on the economy that is a good one, never mind the fact that I to also work and have to pay tax not only on my earnings from work plus returns from my investments as well as other taxes around the place such as the GST.

Oh and the last stimulus was for people who worked I don't know how you didn't qualify but no people on students allowances or Ausstudy received it either.

Besides the last package while it was paid when this whole mess started it was paid because people had to deal with rising costs and the government wanted to help people out. However, according to the government you and me didn't have to deal with rising costs.

My parents earnt far to much to but because I worked for a couple years and paid more in tax then I have received back in a student allowance I became eligible for it.

Yes they already did give it to those earning a certain amount $6000 was the minimum you had to earn before getting anymore.

There are a few problems with it myself but that is Krudds fault for not thinking it through not the people receiving the money.

See I didn't work until after uni, so I wasn't considered independant for ages. Ergo, no Government benefits.

Yeah last year. Well yeah for some reason the government thinks people earning more than $100,000 a year is rich and don't lose out when prices go up. But it is more to do with the old class warfare mentality that still remains within the ALP.

Indeed. Gotta love the Government.

Just really goes to show how in touch they are and how much they only care about winning the votes.

Pretty shit considering your parents don't even have to be earning much something like $60,000 a year before you aren't independent and that you are dependent on your parents till you are 21.

Yeah I'm not sure of what the requirements were but you obviously weren't in the voting bloc the government was trying to target.

This time around they not only have a larger voting target but also hope that giving almost everyone money will do something anything for the economy.

As Krudd say it is this or sit back and do nothing, which is absolute bogus but it makes opposition quiet (a common trick by this government) and also shows they haven't done any real research into how to help the economy.

Next week's budget is going to be interesting, I suspect a large rise on taxes (not income which will mean they will break an election promise, maybe the top one but then that will hardly surprise me as it just means another election promise broken) but an increase in taxes nevertheless, as well as a continuation of the class warfare mentality that runs wild in the ALP.

Or more.

Yeah it is pretty shit but we will see if they really care about Australians and the economy or themselves and their votes this tuesday.

Actually SJIV I got it wrong it is only $900 for people earning betweeen $6,000 and about $50,000 last tax year.

And that is for all taxpayers as a mate's 17 year old brother told me the other day it is the most money any government has ever given him.

I didn't get it. Didn't earn enough to pay tax at all in either of my last jobs, so the government wouldn't let me lodge a tax return, and then apparently mum earns too much for me to get youth allowance. Which is fucked. I don't understand why they don't just give it to all students when they KNOW that students will spend it on the things the government wants: local business and retail. But no, I missed out, because I'm unemployed I don't get the money. That's some twisted logic right there.

If during those jobs in the 07/08 financial year you had to pay tax which comes out of your pay (PAYG) then you need to lodge a tax return in order to get that money back especially if you earned less than $6,000.

And yes it is pretty fucked especially this youth allowance, independence thing.

Hell you can move out of home even to another city but if you haven't earned enough, and your parents earn to much (which I don't think is even that much something like $60,000 then you are still dependent on them. I think it is up to the age of 21.

Funny how you can drink, join the army, drive a car and vote before you are 21 (basically legally an adult) but if you parents earn a just over a measly sum then you are still dependent on them even if you need to move 500km away just to get some job training.

nope

if its purpose is stimulus the best people to give it to are the poor. they will spend it right away and always inside the country (as opposed to me spending mine in spain last year) and usually in the local community.

I only worked one small shift a week, so I definately earned less than 6k, but it also meant that if I worked that amount every week for the entire year I would have earned less than 6k, so the tax office never took any tax at all. I paid zero tax in the first place.

But yeah, the rules for youth allowance are absurd, especially if you move away. I want to move up to Canberra next year, but I don't think I'll be able to afford it because mum earns too much. Buwah? Stupidity, say I.

All you have to do is get your parents to sign a piece of paper saying that you are an ungrateful sod and they kicked you out of home due to irreconcilable differences. Simple, and not intrusive or inappropriate at all.

As SJIV says you can try and convince Centrelink that you have fallen out with your parents or (and I don't mean to be rude here) get a job that pays well and earn $17,000.

Yes the rules are stupid and the payment amount is pitiful for some reason the government thinks paying $370 a fortnight can cover all expenses. Sure there is rent assistance but I only receive $70 a fortnight to help me pay my $240 a fortnight rent.

The government doesn't actually want students to succeed. They set us up for failure by paying us miniscule amounts for tertiary students and then wonder why education is not seen as important or valuable in this country. I hate it. :(
