The politician Jack Kemp has died aged 73 (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/03/us/03kemp.html?_r=1&hp). He is probably most famous for his sponsorship of the 1981 ERTA and general advocacy of tax cutting. Before his political career he was a professional American Football player.

I had no idea he was sick. I'd seen him on talking-head shows as recently as February, and he always appeared perfectly healthy!

It was so goofy watching him campaign in black inner cities during the '96 campaign, as though Dole had any chance of winning votes there. And media commentators' not-the-least-ironic remarks that the 61-year-old Kemp had ingested "youth and vigor" into the fossil-esque Dole campaign were also mildly amusing. As was a Newsweek sidebar that featured all the nasty things Dole and Kemp used to say about each other before they were runningmates. The one I can remember off-hand:

"In a recent fire, Bob Dole's library burned down. Both books were lost, and he hadn't even finished coloring one of them yet!" --Jack Kemp (sometime during the '80s)

A pity. We really should have had him as president in 1988.

I think that when we look back, we can consider this the final nail in the coffin of Reagan conservatism.
