Yes, it's cool. I'm trying it out since several days and I think I will continue using it.

Wow, it's the future that the 80's promised us! Now all they need is a web browser that looks and acts like a flight simulator for some damn reason.

It looks kind of shiny, but I have a feeling that it would get old fast. Desktops are two dimensional because that is the way that people are used to thinking, so a 2D set up is easier to remember/read/take in at a glance.

Sure, try it. If you do not like it, you just can 'quit' the application.

It's not messing up your original desktop.

It looks really cool, but I have a feeling it might be too buggy and slow at this stage.

I'm using it only since a few days and had not one crash.

It's not from Microsoft, so no worries :)

I use it. It's not bad. I find switcher to be much more useful. http://insentient.net/

Pretty cool, but I'm pretty good at keeping my desktop clean. I don't really ever have unnecessary files or folder lying around, unless it's just a temporary one. And as was mentioned in the video comments, it looks as though it would take a bit more processing power than my regular desktop, something of course that may not be a problem with newer or custom built computers.

It looks cool, but I've never been 'overwhelmed' by the concept of folders or a 2D desktop.

how exactly is creating a pile any different from a file?

Oh goody, a memory-intensive way of imagining I'm in Hackers.

I don't want my desktop to be like my desk; my desk is cluttered and covered in documents and books that I should really clean up.

Desktops? What are these 'desktops' of which you speak?

More seriously, I saw it a while back. It looks nifty, but is waaaaaaay too mouse-centric for my tastes. I run ratpoison and conkeror, and I can do everything in my normal browsing and use without ever moving my hands off the keyboard. It's just so much faster.

Over time, I think, computer interfaces will split - the "intuitive" or "easy" model, which will be mouse or touch screen based, shiny and graphical with lots of cool effects, and the "hard" model, which will probably be a tiling, keyboard driven system. Tiling is just so much faster and more effective - it takes the "organising windows and presenting information" job from the user, and passes it over to the computer. When it's implemented well, it's simply incredible to use.

A pile in BumpTop is exactly what it is, a pile of icons. You could use them to group items.

As far as my monitors can see: nothing.

You use the same version to registrate and get access to the enhanced version.

If you forget the graphical representation then it’s indeed comparable to folders.

Both have their advantages. In my opinion, folders are more usable for large selection of files, while a pile feels more usable for few items.

After you created a pile, you can do other stuff, like ‘Fan Out’

Are you stupid? It should be obvious, "F =/= P." By getting rid of the F and replacing it with a P they have made their program 350% more better.

But that is what files already do...group a set of files into one larger file

But you can just open the folder, which is seemingly identical to fanning out a pile...

I just don't see how it is any different is all...

In a way it is. But it is not a bad thing to support different interfaces styles for different users.

In MS Word you can print a document in several ways:

• Using the print icon
• Using the File Menu
• Or by using the ctrl-p shortcut.

Btw, the pile is not the only feature of Bumptop.

How is this not spam?

Since when can't you talk about some nice piece of software?

Why do you take a lot of time to enter threads which are not in your field of interest and constantly disturb these environments with your absurd negative tone?

It seems to look pretty good. I like the idea of having various, quick ways to sort files by entering a search term. Stickies are always a good idea for desktops. The idea of a pile seems a little redundant. Why not just make a pile a folder, but allow previews of the folder that look like the pile's preview. I don't care for any of the widgets mentioned, but presumably that could eventually take off like iPhone apps and facebook apps. However, the actual 3D part of application seems naff.

The only other way I'd like to improve the system is to make all the preview and search tools system wide and not just unique to the desktop. So maybe having stickies within folders.

The pile is not a replacement for folders, it is just a further improvement of the desktop metaphor. On a real desk, you could have piles of documents and to retrieve a single document, you browse through the pile.

The pile metaphor in BumpTop is doing the same. You can create a pile and with the mousewheel you browse through your pile. Like I said before, I find it very useful for small lists of related documents, for large lists I do prefer a folder (just like in the real world).
