About time, Sweden.

A country legalizing gay marriage doesn't mean that there are a lot of gay people in that country. It just means that the majority of citizens of that country are decent human beings.

Wait, they just legalized it? I coulda sworn that since Sweden tends to be quite liberal they would have legalized it already.

Actually it doesn't it just means that enough members of parliament feel that they should be allowed to and that they're aren't enough people in Sweden who are against it. (Not being against something doesn't mean you a for it)

But regardless just because a country allows gay to marry doesn't mean the country is full of decent people.

On a side note: I wonder how the anti-gay-marriage faction will react as more and more parts of the planet catch on that this is the right thing to do -- and -- :eek2: -- the planet does not explode from the pressure of unrepressed gayitude!!!

If I recall correctly that is from Citizen Kane (an excellent movie btw) and the reason he was doing that was because his wife had performed poorly in her play. Is it really the best picture?

Also, Citizen Kane is definitely a movie I must see.

I think the Bible Belt is a little farther south than Iowa. Iowa has traditionally leaned Democratic.

I would have to look again IIRC when it came out in Iowa there was talk of how a redder state was quicker than certain dark blue states. *looks towards Cali*

Casablanca and Barry Lyndon, as Parkus rightly asserts, are fantastic. But I would rank Citizen Kane above them both. Only slightly, but enough.

I'd think it'd be pretty easy for anyone to recognize gay marriage, really. You see two guys in tuxedos holding hands in front of a priest, you're bound to think yep, that's a gay marriage alright. I think it's generally the lack of a bride that tips most people off. That, and the fact that there's not a whole lot of other things it coud be, I mean, you're unlikely to confuse it with a bris or something.
Yeah, it was about time...the problem is that a christian party has been in the alliance that has been ruling Sweden the last years so they have not agreed with it. Finally the rest of the parties said "meh, f*ck you then" (although I guess they used a bit nicer words) and since the minority all where for it they had like 95% that wanted to allow it in the parliament.
But yeah, one would have been expecting us to allow it earlier, and most people have been wanting to allow it for some time.

Now if I remeber rightly, Sweden was one of the countries which brought in civil unions early on, before a lot of places in Europe, let alone the US (ones that are entierly equal in all but name). They are now just quietly cleaning up the legislation to call them both marriages.

So yeah, Sweden took the early lead and just now noticed the rest of us are catching up.

Congratulations, Sweden!
In regards to Iowa's "Red-Statishness", Iowa is a lightly blue state - it will vote Republican about 1/4 of the time. The most recent was, in fact, the 2004 election. While it has swung wildly blue in the last election, so did a lot of other states.
For instance, Iowa has one Democrat Senator (Tom Harkin) and one Republican (Chuck Grassley). Whilst the last two Governors have been Democratic, the two before were Republican, and the margins of election are all over the place. Further, two of Iowa's 5 Congressmen are Republican.
In sum: Iowa is a pale-blue state. It isn't much of a swing state - in decent years, Democrats can count on its vote. However, it isn't a deep-blue state, either.
