As the secrets about the CIA's interrogation techniques continue to come out, there's new information about the frequency and severity of their use, contradicting an 2007 ABC News report, and a new focus on two private contractors who were apparently directing the brutal sessions that President Obama calls torture.

Psychologists Bruce Jessen, left, and Jim Mitchell shaped the CIA interrogation program of al Qaeda detainees, including Abu Zubaydah. Both refused to speak to ABC News citing confidentiality agreements with the U.S. government.

According to current and former government officials, the CIA's secret waterboarding program was designed and assured to be safe by two well-paid psychologists now working out of an unmarked office building in Spokane, Washington...

So let me get this straight; we paid people to make sure that nobody got hurt while compromising our principles? That was conscientious of us. :p

To say they "invented" waterboarding is a bit much, given that all you need is a table, some rope, a cloth, and a watering can. It's probably been practiced since Roman times at least. I know that the Khmer Rouge used it, as did the Japanese in WW2 (and both sides in Vietnam). But yes, it is shameful how people will cast aside their morals for money (I say this having not much money to cast aside my morals for, come back with one million and I'll have to think about it).

It really makes me angry how people can somehow wrap their heads around becoming evil while combating evil. It seems that the War on Terror led the supposedly-good-guys to perpetrate terror, and I can't help but think that the climate of fear and hysteria during the Bush years is just what Bin Laden wanted.

Wasn't it, though? :D

I liked "now working out of an unmarked building in Spokane, Washington." You ever stroll down an average city street? Not many are marked with more than the address. I would venture to guess that very, very few sport signs advertising things like, "Home of the US Waterboarding Research & Development Laboratories." ;)

[Oh, and, HK, note the clever use of smilies to denote sarcasm and humor.]

Dammit... stop telling everyone all our secrets! Now how are we going to achieve our world domination for our dark lord and master!

On a more serious note - this unfortunately doesn't surprise me, somehow some psychologists seem to think that the fact that the APA ethics rules are just suggestions.

$1000 a day isn't bad for consultants. We hire consultants that actually know things and they charge upwards of $2000 a day. In fact, our burdened rate for engineers is about $1500 a day, when we charge other companies for their time.

I would rather give 1000 bucks a day to Sara Palin to sit on her front porch and keep the nation safe from Russian and moose invasions!
