As it turns out, I'm a godless commie.

So this evening I was reading up on a blog post that I had been having a discussion with another user about.

We were debating the point, (I was totally winning, obviously) and then suddenly the other user decided that it would be best to let me know that I have been mislead by the godless communistic and leftist media and then proceeds to lump me in with said godless communists.

Now, I've had far more pleasant and rational discussions with actual godless communists while passionately disagreeing with them on a variety of issues, so I had to wonder if maybe the godless commies weren't being unfairly maligned.

But anyway...

I ask you, o great and wise people of the godless communist media of NSG, when have you had an experience of someone being completely and utterly wrong about your beliefs? Was it here? There? Everywhere? Did you ROFL?

Most people are wrong about Wicca as well. These are the sources they consult when it comes to Wicca.

1. Their priest or pastor, who proceeds to tell them that Wicca is a Satan worshiping, black cat/chicken/virgin sacrificing, baby eating cult.

2. TV shows/movies like Charmed or The Craft where apparently I can form fire balls, and actually morph into someone else.

3. Internet, where this one poster totally knows a Wiccan, and then goes on a rant that you really can only find on Alex Jone's website. Of course the Internet is also popular for those "Wiccans turn Christian" stories, where the "former" Wiccans backs up 1 and/or 2 on the list.

4. Finally, at the bottom, very few people would actually consult an actual Wiccan.

I was ROFLMAO some time after the event. I shall brave the catcalls and sneers, and declare that, beneath this towering intellect with a vast library of conservative logical tomes, I'm a relatively sensative guy. :$

Yeah, though now a Christian, I spent a lot of years in the occult community. I know the difference between reality and pop culture regarding Wicca. At this point in space-time, it's not my way. But I don't care to see idiotic persecution, either.

Everytime I call myself a feminist, people assume the wrong things about my beliefs. It's why I use that term. I get to discuss gender equity when people make stupid comments. It's a great 'in'.

Most people think I'm way more serious here on NSG than I am. It's okay. I've gotten used to people claiming I'm virulently anti-USian for example. They can't back it up because my posts don't support that, so I don't care. I always love people telling me I was molested as a child when I bring up my sexual proclivities.

The best lesson I took from my divorce is that it doesn't matter how well someone thinks they know you, and how well they think they have you pegged...you are who you are despite their very flawed view.

I've had it happen here (can you avoid it on NSG?) Way back when, maybe even pre-jolt, another poster insisted that I was really a Christian and only saying I was an atheist to try and make him look foolish.

I'm surprised at the number of people who think I'm a Christian just because I have an ethical and moral center. It seems agnostics, atheists, pagans and all non-Christians (except Jews) are immoral and will murder you, rape you and molest your children because God, through the medium of their pastor, isn't telling them not to.

I've been assumed to be male, on the perfectly obvious grounds that mods are always male. My propensity for Bible quotes has made some think I'm Christian. And using words like "propensity" in conversation makes some IRL people think I'm stuck-up, the ultimate Aussie sin.

I enjoy living up (or possibly down) to all these views as long as I can maintain the fiction.

I had a friend in school who's "mastery" of logic was amazing. One day he informed me that, because I didn't believe in god, I must be a commie.

Friend: You don't believe in God? Then that makes you a commie!

Me: Huh???

"Friend": You don't believe in God. Commies don't believe in God. So you're a commie!

Me: Run that by me again...

"Friend": You don't believe in God. Commies don't believe in God. So you're a commie!

Only once that I can think of somewhat recently.

In a class .. one of my fellow students called me an atheist. I had said something negative about religion at one point .. when they were all jolly talking about it in a class that had absolutely nothing to do with religion. We were there to learn a job skill. Anyway .. it pissed me off.

But I just, after a few seconds told them no .. I wasn't an Atheist .. I believe in God .. I just don't like religion.

I know now .. they totally didn't understand what I was saying. And that I said the exact same thing in response to being called an atheist as what I had said prior to end up being called an atheist.

But what was I to expect .. I was surrounded by blacks, and the whites thought being a republican coincided with being a Christian.

The one guy in the class understood at least somewhat though. He was a former Catholic who switched to Islam and then left that after he went to Iraq.

He did mention to me that he thought the trinity was belief in 3 gods , not 1. I told him it's not (to me , or in general in Christianity) .. but I couldn't explain it to him.

5) Part of the international conspiracy against Muslims

There are many, many more - especially from my experience in politics. Its pathetic but many people would sooner jump onto the 'bashing bandwagon' of sloganism than entering into a discourse where both sides listen and think about each others points before responding to them.

I know someone who is the wife of my college mentor and friend, and she's sometimes incomprehensibly insensitive with her pronouncements about others (and hysterically sensitive whenever someone pronounces some truth about her that's even remotely unflattering). She was talking about a friend of hers who was single and looking to be set up. My age, in my field, smart, attractive -- so I volunteered. But she said that it wouldn't work because the woman is Jewish. When I asked what that had to do with anything, she replied "well, YOU don't believe in ANYthing." This was when I was merely not professing any strong spirituality at all, not declaring myself an atheist. So just because I'd disagreed with some of her earlier Evangelical pronouncements, she assumed that I was utterly devoid of any belief whatsoever, and acted on that belief.

I wanted to tell her how rude that was, and how insensitive, but the woman is married to someone I owe a great deal to with regard to how my career has blossomed. I just nodded and smiled. I get to do that a lot.

Well, to be fair, if Wiccans actually could do awesome magic spells then that would be an excellent reason to join. Willow Rosenberg would just be an added bonus.

Id totally be Wiccan if I could blow shit up with my mind al'a Charmed.

It's more than just doing spells. >.<

Yeah, she's fairly unattractive. I'm sure there are more attractive people than that in the atheist camp - does anyone know what religion Felicia Day adheres to?

Anyway, back on topic now! Let me see ...

A couple of years ago I was asked, in real life, if I was American. Which is kinda weird because I've lived in NZ all my life and do not sound anything like an American.

Once in high school I was told (not asked!) by a friend that I was gay. When I refuted this he said "Oh, I think you are!". I've always wondered about him, after that. :P

Online I often seem to get mistaken for a woman. Which is perhaps understandable given that my avatar until quite recently was Zimmy from Gunnerkrigg Court (now it's Orange Bunny from Bunny, so I shall probably be mistaken for a furry).

I remember someone once informing me that I only felt a certain way because I was a black man, which was more than a little surprising to me.
Someone once told me I only felt a certain way because I was a Christian. This was on a board where I thought my animosity toward Christianity was downright notorious.

The assumption when I was new here was not only that I was male, but that I was in my 40's  (I'm not even 30 yet btw)

People IRL seem to think I'm "extremely liberal"......yeah, seriously.

wow... I thought you were teh oldies too, although I know ur a female type.

I've actually wondered the same thing - especially since the people who tend to fling the furry hate around are... well, at the very least -lurkers- on /b/ and so perverts and proud.

It confuses me.

I find lesbians creepy.

Also, I'm friends with some furries......had no clue until I helped her clean out her closet for a yard sale.....she's a fox.......literally (figuratively also hehe).

I was kinda traumatized, like that time I found my mom's dildo. I got over it.

I've been called
1 godless, because I am liberal
2 america hater, because I was against Bush #2
3 terrorist, because of both of the above.

1 Despite the fact that I am a Christian, for 2 years now, I am called godless, because I like basic tenants of socialism. I mean, its not like the church in acts ever gave up their wealth and shared it with each other or anything:rolleyes:.

2 Okay, so maybe I denounce America for a lot of its history and crap it is doing currently, but I don't hate America as a whole. The concept of America (a free society of mixed
people) is very appealing.

3 And I am not a terrorist. I have a t-shirt that says so.

Oh HotRod, you've been Turned! *breaks out pink champagne*

But it's not easy when you're sober.
O_O

OMG HOLY SEX CHANGE BATMAN!

Whew! Still a woman!

I just have to laugh at the people who think Catholics are still Muslim-slaughtering witch-burning fanatics. Oh, and I forgot, we worship idols and aren't really Christians, either. :P

I've been labeled a Nazi by the sole virtue that I'm (only partially) of German descent, but even then, the German ancestors I have dates for left der deutscher Sprachraum (which was much bigger at the time) at least 200 years before the Nazi era.

I knew it. I knew it all along!
