Just about everything.

Actually, though some things do offend me, the list isn't long.

Overuse of profanity. Profanity is not language, it's punctuation and should be used sparingly to make a point. People who can't say one short sentence without loading it with scatology have seriously deficient vocabularies and, possibly, deficient intelligence.

Jokes about rape and sexual abuse. Offensive, unpleasant, disgusting and just not funny. This is right up there with crude sexual comments disguised as jokes. I like a bawdy joke as much as anyone, sexual situations are frequently hilarious, but using humor as an excuse for making crude comments is just ... crude.

Poor hygiene. If you can't keep yourself clean for some reason (like that poor woman with the allergy to water or someone who has limited or no access to soap and water) it's excusable. But I have a hard time tolerating people who choose to be filthy.

People who can't disagree with someone about politics, religion, gender or anything else without resorting to name calling and threats.

People who think they know everything really offend those of us who do know everything.

What offends me:

Stupidity. Wilful stupidity, that and wilful ignorance.

Noisy, obnoxious children; children who run amok in restaurants, airplanes, or the like, and their ignorant parents who refuse to rectify the situation. After all, the only time one notices children like this is not when it's in an appropriate location, but it's where the children should logically be expected to behave to a degree.

Preachy religious folks. You're entitled to believe whatever makes you happy, just don't expect me to. Of course, there are hose who practice but you never hear a peep; they keep to themselves; which is fair for both sides. Basically the variety that try to impose their 'morality' on those who don't share their views or beliefs. Adding to this: being told I'm sinning and blaspheming when I don't even believe in that horse manure.

Inequality.

Sexism.

Racism.

Bigotry.

Harmful deception and lies. Strangely, harmless lying doesn't offend me. After all, there are times when lies are necessary for maintaining civil relations and preventing greater harm.

It just so happens that, sadly, Christians are the group who most commonly carry this attitude.

Muslims got it right when they described Jews, Christians, and Muslims as "children of the book". Anybody with any biblical foundation or influence upon their faith is going to perhaps have some difficulties with the concept of man on man sex being acceptable. Some people from these faiths have no problem with it. Some do. It certainly is nothing to hold against someone. I do not pick on people for their beliefs. It is definitely an uncool cake with plenty of fascist icing upon it to think that way.

That's the spirit! More Biblical Euphemisms...
Muslims got it right when they described Jews, Christians, and Muslims as "children of the book". Anybody with any biblical foundation or influence upon their faith is going to perhaps have some difficulties with the concept of man on man sex being acceptable.
I don't. And I have Biblical Foundations for my faith.
Some people from these faiths have no problem with it. Some do. It certainly is nothing to hold against someone.
As someone who is anti-anti-tolerance, I disagree.
I do not pick on people for their beliefs. It is definitely an uncool cake with plenty of fascist icing upon it to think that way.
Fascist Icing? Criticism is Fascism? What world are you living in?

Homophobia.

Gendered thinking and behavior--not acting oneself in accordance with one or another sex stereotype, but believing that everyone else should and/or does, and thinking of human relations in those exclusive terms.

The conviction that one knows and understands everything, when it is accompanied by stupidity and/or ignorance.

Posturing at profundity and wisdom. This is oftentimes annoying even when there is actually profundity and wisdom, though obviously it is more so when the person believes (and propagates) nonsense that merely sounds profound and wise.

Blasphemy is not a cool thing to do. If we forget about the most important aspect of it (your relationship with God) and even just look at it in terms of what a rude thing it is to say around believers, it is still unacceptable. The name of the Lord is the most sacred thing to believers in God. Even invoking his title ("God") is something that should be done respectfully.

It is rather similar to burning the flag. If you were to burn the American flag respectfully it is all good and everyone is cool with that because old damaged irreperable flags are supposed to be respectfully burned. But if you burn the flag disrespectfully you will probably get beat up because that is the most offensive thing you can do around an American.

God has no flag or symbols. In fact he commands that there be no graven images or likenesses of God as part of the prohibition against idolatry. Crosses, Stars of David, and Crescents are symbols of faith and are not symbols of God. You probably would not make a lot of friends if you desecrated these symbols either. Instead of a symbol or a flag, God has is name and in a scared-lite manner his title of "God". Please do not desecrate that with blasphemy. It is so uncool and it offends me a lot not that that matters to anybody.

You have the right to free speech. Firstly, I have no relation with any god. I do NOT believe in any god because it's just so ludicrous to me.

Secondly, you now make me remember why I was completely and irrevocably turned off Christianity. It was this kind of non-sense that did it for me. Once again, it does not apply to me. I am an Atheist. I do not buy into that of the Biblical nonsense. It makes no difference to me if it was written in some ancient document. If someone asks you to not swear or "blaspheme" in his presence, it would be rude to not try to stop while they are still there. It's not a matter of taking the Second (or is it the Third?) I think overly cheap people piss me off the most -especially when they're a lot richer than me.

Examples

Non-Cheap guy buys a proper sleeping bag, Cheap guy continually bitches about his bag being forty dollars cheaper, bought at a flee market and is wow, meant for -5 c. which translates in reality to about 10 c. Non-Cheap guy has to put up with Cheap Guy yacking about how he uses a piece of pink insulation foam to sleep on because it was cheaper than an air mattress and wildly available after his neighbour had a renovation project last summer. While Non-Cheap guy pumps up his mattress, Cheap guy stands and laughs at how he has to pump something up. Non-Cheap guys go to sleep, and would have had a fine sleep if Cheap guy would stop complaining about his mattress making him itchy. Non-Cheap guy is forced to give Cheap Guy his extra blanket because Non-Cheap guy can no longer get any sleep whatsoever because of Cheap Guy's constant shivering and wining.

I consider myself to be somewhat nationalistic but I don't have any feelings for the flag (or any other symbol for that matter). To me freedom of speech and expression is one of the most sacred things there is. If you hate the president or the state itself, go ahead and burn a flag or make a cartoon or whatever. Same goes for neo-nazi idiots. If you want to monger hate by having a demonstration, you have the right to do it even if the majority doesn't agree with your views (as long as you don't break any laws, that's it).

So you think people using their freedom of speech is an acceptable excuse for assault?

Well, if anybody tries to attack me for what I say, they better be prepared for me to defend myself. Will I win?(Well, as much as it is possible to "win" a fight... in my view, if things actually come to blows, I've failed.) It's impossible to say for sure. But I'll sure as hell make sure they think twice about trying it in the future.

Yeah. One of my friends (ex-military, by the way) explained to me that he was quite strongly considering burning a flag. His reasoning was this: once a flag is dirty and worn, the proper way to dispose of it is by fire. Because our last administration so sullied the flag, he would have no choice but to dispose of it. Besides, better to burn the flag than the Constitution.

Now, I'm not really nationalistic or anything, and I see no rational reason for nationalism-- in fact, I think it does a lot of harm in this world. But that made a lot of sense to me. Essentially, saying "You have so dirtied this flag that it is now my duty to dispose of it."

But...but...we all lie. Some scientists say we do it at least 7 times a day.

Yeah little weird things, particularly in personal stories and things like that which I really don't care about, but when I ask a lab partner in school for example if they did their work, and they come up the next day empty handed and claim they left it at home... I prefer when people just tell me they didn't do the damn work.

But this is actually the place to do that, when the thread title and topic is about that kind of thing. I know what you mean. Blasphemy is not a cool thing to do. If we forget about the most important aspect of it (your relationship with God) and even just look at it in terms of what a rude thing it is to say around believers, it is still unacceptable.
Fuck god.
The name of the Lord is the most sacred thing to believers in God. Even invoking his title ("God") is something that should be done respectfully.
Why?
It is rather similar to burning the flag. If you were to burn the American flag respectfully it is all good and everyone is cool with that because old damaged irreperable flags are supposed to be respectfully burned. But if you burn the flag disrespectfully you will probably get beat up because that is the most offensive thing you can do around an American.
I, for one, don't care if someone burns an American flag.
You're right, it doesn't matter to me, because you're god has no meaning to me.

\/ Pretty much this \/

I remember reading a while back about an officer who was captured by the Viet Cong. While in his prison camp, he was subjected to torture; one day, he was visited by Jane Fonda, who was wearing a necklace made-out of pieces of downed American planes; she spent the whole visit telling him what a horrible person he was.

He was later released, and returned to the United States. He was asked if would like Jane Fonda to be punished for treason, and (to paraphrase him, since it has been a while) he said: "I am an American soldier. My duty is to fight and, if necessary, die for her right to say what she said."

That is my concept of an ideal American. The fact that one can openly hate the United States is one of the reasons this country was considered great upon its founding.
