What are your thoughts on dating sites?

I used to use them, then I realized it wasn't worth it. :p

All they do is take your money, and give you matches that are at best, 70% matching to you, even the free ones.

I just check 'em to see if anyone I know is desperate enough to actually be using one. I'm a twisted soul. :p

If you're going to use a dating site, then unless you're super model handsome, don't put your picture up. Because no one will contact you if you're less than handsome.

Problem 1. People see you.

Problem 2: If you're going to use a dating site, then unless you're super model handsome, don't put your picture up. Because no one will contact you if you're less than handsome.

:(
90% of people will never get a page view. the other 10% will get several billion, jsut because people do judge off picture.

Problem 3: Choose 2 of these: Attractive, Intelligent, friendly. That is what anyone you find will be.

At one point, I thought about using dating sites. Changed my mind, haven't looked back. I'm fairly ambiguous to the whole proposition.

Only about 50% of them are. Not much different from real life when you get down to it. I've met some pretty nice guys on dating services. I've met some jerks too, of course. While I wouldn't have expected it, I did meet my partner on one. This year marks three years that we've been together. So they can work. You just have to have realistic expectations. Too many expect too much.

Met my BF on one, and we're getting married in September now.
I like them, although only the free ones. I think most of the pay sites are plain rip-off.

Not true.

I would never have replied to ANYONE without a picture up.
And I wouldn't call myself pretty, but I got more than enough contacts.

I got bored and took eHarmony's little free personality quiz because, as I said, I was bored and am vain and like having automated internet services tell me good things about myself.

It was all good and fun until I started getting repeated emails from them about this and that. I dunno, I don't open them and I'm not sure why I used my student email rather than my spam-account but they're easy enough to delete.

It is kind of hard to seperate people who just stuck up pictures from people who post real pictures of themselves.

I inadvertently signed up for OKCupid. Now, at least three times a month, I get a list of pictures of men (and the occasional woman!) in what they laughingly refer to as the Colorado Springs area (this includes Texas, Utah, Oklahoma, New Mexico). They range in age from 50 to 70. None of them appears to have more than a passing acquaintance with any language (let alone English). It's, at best, funny, at worst, pathetic.

My view of dating sites.
There was a guy who moved down here from Vermont, because he was going to marry a girl. and they were together for 6 months and got engaged.
Then the woman told him I just can't do it anymore. I gave away the ring(really sold), and oh yeah i have been sleeping with someone else and by the way I likely have syphilis.

Ok, but in this case, my BF still got lucky. So it does work for some ;)

Eh, my expectations aren't that high, I just want someone who is weird and interesting. :D

I tried Eharmony, and I took their little test, and apparently they couldn't find a match for me. I'm also not alone in that.

I have heard tales of this. Mostly from the magic talking picture box that resides in my living room, but elsewhere, as well. I've come to the conclusion that fastest and in possession of the largest range dating services are old (or just middle-aged, even) Jewish mothers; but this only works if you intend to have a horde of jewbabies, as that is their, uh, modus operandi, I guess. Catch-phrase, "Oy, I know the perfect Jewish girl for a handsome mensch like you."

I've never used them, but I know people that have. It's helpful in that you can meet a high volume of people and sift through them relatively quickly. I've known folks who are flat out hideous that have had success with dating sites. Perhaps it's a regional thing?

Well, he;s got a nose... ;)
And he's got a round belly, which I just adore. That was one of the reasons I sent him a message... that and the fact that he has long, dark hair, and was holding a cat in his arms on his pic.

I used a free swedish one that worked quite good. Have found two gf there, on relationship lasted 2 years and the other one is in its 5th year and still going. Compare that to relationship I have had in other ways (bars and trough friends) it works much better.

You get the chance to learn about the person before you meet her/him so your first impression is not based on the looks (unless they have a picture on their page). However, I don't think I would pay for the service.
