I know the US state dept. is warning Americans not to travel to Mexico and everyone I talk to about going south brings up the drug killings along the border. You should all listen to them. Stay home.

That way it stays cheap and peaceful for me. The Lost Planet just returned from a short vacation to Baja. We actually drove down. Stayed in Rosarito Beach and made day trips down to Ensenada and Puerto Nuevo. Sometimes felt like we were the only Americans there. Had a blast. Can't wait to go back.

But Tijuana is not "Baja", Tijuana is one major city right on the border near San Diego while Baja, in general, is huge and largely un-developed.

oh i wouldnt drive through tijuana any more than id drive through juarez.

But Tijuana is not "Baja", Tijuana is one major city right on the border near San Diego while Baja, in general, is huge and largely un-developed.TJ is where we crossed.

Unfortunately, Americans have a tendency not to listen to good advice. :(

I told a friend of mine that joining the army during the bush administration would be a bad idea, but he did so anyway; naturally, bush invaded Iraq was the next month, so he got sent there at least five times. Fortunately he wasn't hurt, but...

Yeah, that's like the main official crossing point if you're coming from San Diego. I've been there too, but that's not like hanging out in the city, that's just crossing over the border.

Yeah I wouldn't hang out In TJ, but if you stay on the toll road just head for Ensenada it's no problem. On the way back I got off course and ended up in Tecate and had to go through the center of Tijuana back to the border crossing. It wasn't any real problem but since my spanish sucks I wouldn't really want to do more than pass through.

I wouldn't drive through Tijuana any more than I'd drive through Detroit...

Mexico was just as dangerous in my opinion before the latest drug wars. It always has been. Would that stop me from going? No, not at all. Probably wouldn't take young kids there however I would travel there.

Mexico, Mexico... I went to Guadalajara a few years ago. Gorgeous. Mexicali and Tijuana depressed me. I don't want to go back there.
