Law enforcement sources said David Kellermann, acting chief financial officer of mortgage company Freddie Mac, was found hanging in the basement of his Reston, Va., home, dead from an apparent suicide early this morning.

Let the baseless speculation begin.

What? Someone under huge stress in a very negative situation, in a broader negative environment killed himself. You can color me shocked.

People threw themselves out the windows when the stock market crashed in 1929. 80 years later, they've decided to take the cleaner route and hang themselves. At least it's clear the cause of death.

I do feel bad for the family; even if the person was part of the 'establishment' that brought about the downturn, the person was still human. He's no more or less human than the other humans, dead or alive.

He was still a member of the 'establishment'. Even if he wasn't involved directly, he is now part of it, and he died like that. His death cannot undo that he became a part of it.

I don't know about that. Are we just going to condemn everyone in the system, even the ones who were brought in to save and reform it? How are we ever going to make progress then if even the people who are supposed to be trying to fix our problems are condemned just for being associated with them?

Still... This sudden suicide is actually kind of shocking. I wonder if it will turn out to be related to the work he was doing, or if he had problems that affected the work he was doing.

Of course we have to condemn them! We're here to make wild speculations, so let the wild accusations fly! Woohoo! ;)

Silliness aside; saying he is part of the system is not a a lie, nor it is a condemnation. Saying he is part of the system is not saying he was part of the problem. But he will be remembered as being part of the system, and for some, he may not be seen as an individual..

No one is trying to fix "our problems," at best they're trying to patch up the hull of a ship that's been sinking for decades.

Well, considering that we are still standing on that ship and land is nowhere in sight, I think I'll opt to support their efforts for the time being.

To further extend the metaphor, people are debating whether to keep patching up the ship or whether we should be cannibalizing it to build a raft. I have to concur with both you and Fiddlebottoms, though - the current measures are stopgap, but we need to get things on some kind of even keel before we go making major overhauls. There's no time to repair the mast when the hull is full of holes.

Patch the hull eh. I say that we let the ship sink. The system is too broken to be fixed. Its time we start anew. The only problem I see is with how much the auto industries death would affect everything else.

You do realize that the urban legends and stereotypes of ruined tycoons casting themselves out of highrise windows on Black Tuesday is mostly a myth, right? There were no queues of despondent plutocrats eagerly awaiting a long drop and a sudden stop. That's not to say that there weren't suicides or even a few that fulfilled the myths but it took a little longer than a week for investors to fully grasp what had happened. Even some of the more famous suicides often attributed to the crash of '29 actually happened before the crash or years after.

I know the history you piece together from sugar packets and gum wrappers seems a hell of a lot more interesting but it's about as reliable, accurate and consistant as a wikipedia article.

Add that to the list of Clinton mystery deaths.:p

I swear there will be a movie about all the "suicide deaths" surrounding the Clinton pair in some far off future when everyone is dead and no one can be prosecuted.

not linking this one to Clinton but just musing about the ones that look like they are linked.

See, this is why you shouldn't do pull ups around a noose! Your head could get caught and the next thing you know, you got someone just hanging around in your basement!

But I am fighting back, I am burning the rope section at Home Depot and Lowe's tomorrow! FIGHT THE ROPE, FIGHT THE NOOSE!

If it ain't popular then it's probably vandalized. If it is popular then it's been locked to all but Jimbo's inner circle because the fans can't agree on whether it should be written in American or British english.

It was a nice idea but when you allow anyone to edit it you end up with an article on biochemistry including celebrity references and movie credits.
