7 weeks. :S

In roughly 7 weeks I take my last History A level exam, EdExcel unit 6, the Nazi regime.

Then I am no longer required to be in school.

Other than a massive party on the night of June 11th (everyone seems to have their last exam either on the 10th or 11th) I have absolutely nothing planned until Sept 2010 where hopefully I go to the University of Kent.

Here in lies the problem. In 7 weeks, the British government stops paying me money to attend school, as I am no longer required to attend. I want to work, but in my rather small town pretty much in the middle of nowhere there are no job vacancies. I could get a train up to London and be there within the hour, but it will break my bank doing it. Buses are not an option. The few that journey to my town only really go to Maidstone, a large town pretty far from me. More distance, means a greater fare.

I may be sounding silly here, but I've arrived and the conclusion, and so have my parents (who are unable to fund me in any way, credit crunch hit us hard, and wouldn't really if they had the cash anyway :p), that...

Basically, I need to drive to get a job in my local area.

I need a job to drive.

What can I do?

Edit, currently I am unable to legally drive. I never really had the money to pass :(

I thought about the army or airforce, I mean I'm qualified enough. But I only have the 1 year, minimum service is 3 years, in some cases 6.

I'm still considering the TA.

Do they still do University Cadet bullshit? (Of course all the real soldiers will laugh at you for being a swot, and you will have to be an officer type which also isn't very good).

I believe so, however uni isn't until late 2010.

How is being an officer bad? I need to be one if I was to do what I wanted in the RAF after uni :P

Basically, in this gap year, I want to stop myself being bored, and earn. Work is the solution! :p But I am unable to do as discussed above. I wanted to earn enough to go to Hungary for a few weeks in summer 2010. Before uni. And to help me pay for uni. There are a wide range of grants and loans, but unfortunately it doesn't quite cover the cost. And of course, they need to be paid back.

internet business or other internet work (or phone)? there's probably work out there for someone who can't travel

a friend of a friend makes quite good money to supplement his uni loan by working for some porn site (collecting & submitting links, gets commission on each link clicked, apparently)

alternatively, do you have any friends you can crash at who live closer to work? maybe you could stay with them the days you're working or something. again, another friend of mine did that before he got his car

then there's always the moped option. they're cheap (compared to cars) and it seems you can ride them on your own as a learner. you'd just have to put up with driving something that sounds and drives like a lawnmower :P

Depending if where I can actually get a job, I could crash at a friends I guess. Its worth looking into. Thanks for that point.

As for the moped, its a good idea which I have looked into. Financial strain scuppers it again.

What they don't have some sort of reserve units?

Go to the south of France and pick up a vineyard job, they always need extra hands in the Summer,

Gets your traveling paid for, there's loads of temporary Summer jobs, you just need to hunt around,

Other options are cruise ship staff, NGO work where'll they'll at least pay your expenses, general farm work...

Go out on the nearest road to London and hold your hand out, fist closed with thumb pointing up. Within say, two days, someone will give you a lift.

I'm still considering the TA.

er...yeah I guess it can work I just wouldn't put all my hopes and dreams on the pay

best bet is to apply asap so you can get on a training camp with your regiment which is mucho-grande easy and a good way of getting a wad of cash in the pocket quick

I'm all for a little bad advice but lets not ruin the boys life now.

do this, OTC is full of gash and its basically cadets with more firepower at their disposal

You get paid to go to school?

the government hangs the promise of £30 a week to get the layabouts to go to school then wonders why its apprenticeship schemes start lacking in employers

20 mins from Tonbridge, and about 30 from Maidstone.

And anything that pays fairly decently.

thats the spirit! OP should go on the dole :p

Is that even possible for me?

And I don't think I could cope with the shaaame.

Loss of dignity is being reserved for Uni :p

you can only get that, as i understand it, if your family earns under a certain level.

So you get paid to go to highschool?

Why the fuck did you leave the year between College and Highschool anyway? It sounds like you were planning on earning some money to pay for college, but without any kind of job lined up. "those who fail to plan plan to fail"

At any rate, I'm sure you can find a job some (undoubtedly Polish) immigrant from the mainland would normally be doing, right? Just come with your best fake accent, and be willing to work for cheap.

Or, those who can divest enough of their capital in other sources to claim said level if income. Of all Labour's shiny new benefits, this pisses me off more than most; manifestly unfair that wealthy farmers, or those with sufficient earnings to retire early, should qualify.

Can you get to Chatham easily?

Call centre work is a bludge and fairly good pay (where I am from). I worked for a Private Health Insurer between teaching jobs in a call centre. Best time of my life.
