For 20/4 I sat around criticising other people for having grown up with alternate dating systems.

But, let's be fair, those dating systems are really stupid. :(

Err.... I kinda regret this thread because people don't know about the date 4/20 that much.

If you're a pessimist, it's Hitler's birthday and the anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre. Therefore to some it is a sad day.

On the other hand, it is cannabis day to many people in the Cannabis culture.... So, I hope that this kinda helped.

4/20? I didn't realise it was the fourth of venticember.

Yes. We get it. The US uses a different system of stating the date. We know. Really.

4/20 this year is Patriots Day in MA/ME, and Marathon Monday in Boston...one of our two major drunkfest holidays. So I'm going to be doing a kegs and eggs thing soon, then proceed down to Kenmore Square to drink lots and cheer on all the marathon runners, followed by a BBQ and bonfire at a friends house tonight

Since the celebration was started on the number 4-20, not 20-4, we US types will ignore the European snobbery today.

I really want to celebrate properly today, but I have been unable to obtain the appropriate supplies. Sigh...

Veneration of 4/20 annoys me a bit, even though it's not as big a thing here as in the US. It just seems like an excuse for people who have no interest in cannabis culture 364 days of the year to suddenly put on Legend and feel like they're really rebelling against the system. It's like people who only go to church at Christmas and yet proclaim themselves proud Christians, or people who say they're ravers because they once went to a student union event with glowsticks.

Which I appreciate is complete bollocks, because I'm basically saying "no, only authorised people may be part of an alternative culture", but meh.

No money=no weed=an unhappy 420 for the nameless one.

Especially since this is the first time since graduating college that I haven't worked on a 420 and I really could spend it blazed out or going to a festival or something. bah.

Sadly I have exams tomorrow, so celebrating 420 in my usual style would be a bad move. I'm convinced that the damn crafty college admin did this on purpose, as ruining other peoples lives is the only joy left for the soulless decrepit walking corpses that staff that place.

I agree with you quite a bit. 4/20 strikes me as a hipster holiday. Yay, you smoke weed, wooo. But I guess it's the same as Saint Patty's Day. But for some reason the latter strikes as having a degree of legitimacy while 4/20 is just...a very manufactured thing.

Wait, you're saying a holiday specifically centered around the pop culture celebration of a specific drug is manufactured? The devil you say...

The real pain in the ass about something like this crawling from the underground too much isn't so much the 'amateur' hour aspect as much as the people who then become 'too cool' for it.

Relax. It's weed, it's almost the point, really.

See, I'd disagree. I think the real pain in the ass is the people that celebrate it like it's the most amazing thing in the world. That seems as counter to a day dedicated to getting your devil-eyes on as relaxing seems to fit right in.

this sorta.

I miss wasting whole weeks smoking pot in peoples bedrooms and eating tons of junk food (baww regular drug testing that probabaly would let me off)

people who say they're ravers because they once went to a student union event with glowsticks.

okay thats rather embarrassing to watch isn't it, also glowsticks are a squaddie thing and you should point that out :p

Yeah, I can see how people having a good time can be a drag. People bein' too cool for school, that's where it's at, that's fun.

There's always that "It was better last year, before you knew about it" crowd, some sort of flailing about to establish bona fides or something, "I was here first!" I've been recognizing the day for a while now and the only thing I'd regret is the unavoidable letting the squares know (not the casual smokers, the not at all smokers).

I don't see it as important. I don't see anyone celebrating it in any way that takes away anything from me, and I live in Northern California. The only way it could be more 'in my face' would be Amsterdam.

Obviously you're not a veteran of 420, otherwise you'd know that part of the day's events means smoking at 4:20 - typically in the PM, unless you've got nothing better to do and want to experience that odd feeling of deja vu and do so in the AM and in the PM.

I should have been clear. I will be using my Dutch bong to smoke. Not that that's different than usual. What makes it spiritual is... ok, screw it, I can't deal with this deep stuff now, I just wrote two final exams today.

I don't take marijuana, but I do like to observe it 420. Today, I'll be watching Half Baked and Super High Me. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_High_Me) Since it's illegal to smoke marijuana in NY, as well as my not being fully aware of the health risks of marijuana, I don't intend to smoke marijuana in the near future. I have tried it once, but I decided to wait until I mature and able to do legally.

So, can anyone else recommend me some (legal) ways to commemorate 420/marjiuana culture?

Support any efforts to legalize cannabis, perhaps by writing to your congressperson or donating to pro-legalization organisations.

It's the U.S. It's not fair to group the other nations on the same continent with the U.S. And yeah, I'm a U.S. citizen. Honestly, though, I'm not sure if marijuana will ever be legalized... In New York, we're pretty liberal compared to most of the country and the attitudes I see aren't that friendly towards marijuana.

Without having any idea of the date or its significance, my friends and I got drunk and stoned in the park (wearing my shorts for the first time this year) then made a silly amount of sticky toffee pudding and sat around playing games feeling chonged and bloated.

Which, I suppose, is a perfect way to celebrate cannabis culture.

I have to say, 420 Day has become much more fun, for Europeans at least, since the discovery of cannabis. Just imagine how it was centuries ago:

Lucius: Hey, it's 420 Day!
St. Stephen: What does that mean?
Saul: It means we all go out and get stoned!
St. Stephen: Oh, okay. Let's go then.
Others pick up rocks, proceed to martyr Stephen
St. Stephen: Ow, my head! Dies
Saul: Eww, that doesn't look fun at all. Who came up with this stupid holiday?
Lucius: Celts?

Out of curiosity, why?

I mean, I'm not a huge stoner or anything, but I much prefer the culture to, say, drinking culture. A much bigger emphasis on sharing, and a lot less elitism. You just don't see that much of "hah, I am able to smoke more than you are, so therefore I am a 'better' smoker than you!" the way you see "Hah, I can drink you under the table, you wimp." If somebody's had enough, then that's cool. After all, you're doing it for your own enjoyment, not to prove anything to anybody else.

*shrugs*
But to each his own, admittedly your experiences may be different.

Oh, and even still... are you seriously saying that being a bit obnoxious is worse than murdering millions of people?
