My baby's back!

Last year I posted a thread asking how to clean a computer, given someone'd spilt Coke on it and, despite your helpful answers, seems I didn't clean it thoroughly enough, that and the fact that Coke is a slow-burning dose of hydrochloric acid, eating through plastic and metal alike, bastard Coke!

It died a couple of weeks ago but it was still under warranty to I took it in for repairs, and just got it back.

Now call me a fool, and I put my hands up to this one, I hadn't backed it up so I was left without, essentially, half my brain. It's amazing how much my brain just transferred my memory to the computer's memory - dates, numbers, access to information, remainders etc.,

The brain is very good at forming patterns that cause it to rely on certain assumptions and tools, even relationships (it's thought that part of the pain of leaving a long-ish term relationship is the brain having to adapt to roles it had seconded to others - who pays the bills, who buys milk, who remembers keys etc.,).

So what are you most dependent on, to what or whom have your given up a large portion of personal responsibility to?

I'm just glad I got my baby back :)

*Myself or My brain do not count, it has to be something outside yourself.

I currently am the only person I really depend on...

The 'most', one could say that you depend on NSG to some extent, in terms of a community you belong to, it's something you 'depend' on,

Could be anything, could be that your preferred team wins at the weekend, just the 'most'.

Of course not. Firstly, the fact that I post on this forum does not make me "belong" to any "community" you think there is behind it, secondly, if it dies tomorrow, I wouldn't give a fapping hoot about it.
That means I don't "depend" on it at all, it's just nice to have around.

But you forgot the most important one: my house!

Don't get defensive, I was just providing a trite example,

Sure, your house is one, I've lived in the same place for nearly 3 years and, especially in the kitchen, I just know where things are, I am capable of immense multitasking.

Not defensive, just invalidating your example, however trite, hackneyed or worn down to whatever examples use for bone. :p

I've lived in my house for 11 years now, but even if I had it for only a day or two, I would depend on my house being there when I get home, having a roof against rain 'n'stuff, a bed to sleep in, some food to eat, those kinda things.

I had jet-lag that was clearly cured by getting home, I suspect the body relaxes in such a known, comfortable environment, getting to bed, aiya, I fell straight to sleep.

Life is a system of intricate dependencies, some more important than others.

I am dependent on my mobile for phone numbers one of the reasons why when the battery is dead and I need to call someone (as in it is an emergency or I locked myself out) I can't and have in the past had to borrow the battery of someone's phone in order to call them.

family for some stuff (largely cos i still live with them, but not for long), but mostly computer. it knows everything... and as a result, i keep all the important/sensitive information on a fingerprint-secured memory stick and backup fingerprint-secured HDD. that way even if somebody nicks my computer, hopefully they won't get the most important stuff
edit: ah yeah, and mobile for phonebook

Hmm, myself, really (even if that's not an allowed option http://generalitemafia.ipbfree.com/html/emoticons/tongue.gif).

I don't keep any kind of important dates, calender-wise, on my computer. Nor phone numbers etc.

I do however depend on it (besides mindless entertainment) for online banking (even though that could be done from any other computer) and email, which are all stored on my computer, not on the web. So there'd be some important things in there, like e-tickets for a flight and stuff. Hm, now that I mention it, I really should print those out... *paranoid*
