That's Not Lung Cancer, That's a Fir Tree!

A young man from the capital of Russia’s Udmurtian Republic was diagnosed with cancer, and had to undergo an operation which revealed the shocking truth – he had no cancer but… a tree growing in his lung.

It sounds like a story from Burger’s Adventures of Baron Munchhausen, when the eccentric Baron shot a cherry stone at a deer and it sprang into a cherry tree on the deer’s head.

For 28-year-old Artyom Sidorkin, though, it was no fun at all.

As Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper found out, he often had chest pains, and was coughing up blood.

An X-Ray showed a new growth in his lung, and doctors were certain it was a cancerous one.

Fortunately, when they dissected Artyom’s chest, it was decided to cut out a small piece first, and to carry out an express biopsy test. The doctor made an incision in the lung and saw… a fir tree.

This was so weird I had to share it.

How the Hell did that happen?

Apparently he breathed in a seed from a pine cone and it germinated in his lungs without light? Perhaps it got the glucose it needs to survive from his own bloodstream so it didn't need light for photosynthesis?
Perhaps there is a new breed of parasitic evergreen tree that erupt from the hapless hosts chests like a creature from alien!

AFAIK it was preserved along with the lung tissue. And they theorized that he inhaled a bud.

Eh, one beaver. He can't live forever. Just make sure you don't swallow a breeding pair, and drink lots of water for a few decades.

A bit of constipation is certainly preferable to trying to swallow a fur hunter with his shotgun, a park ranger, half a dozen greenies, and the television media in a helicopter.

Yeh. I used to eat the full apple (pips and stalk and all) until I heard that! And then there's that living tree guy. What's the story with that? What'll happen next, we'll find the Easter bunny and tinkerbell are really homeless and living under a tree stump!

cm. fir tree removed from patient’s lung
13 Apr, 11:35 PM

A five-centimeter fir tree has been found in the lung of a man who complained he had a strong pain in his chest and was coughing blood.

The 28-year-old patient, Artyom Sidorkin, came to a hospital in the city of Izhevsk in Central Russia last week, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily reports.

Doctors x-rayed his chest and found a tumor in one of the lungs. Suspecting cancer, they made a decision to perform biopsy, but when they cut the tissue, they were amazed to see green needles in the cut.

“I blinked three times, and thought I was seeing things. Then I called the assistant to have a look,” says Vladimir Kamashev, doctor at the Udmurtian Cancer Center.

The five-centimeter branch was removed from the patient’s body.

“They told me my coughing blood was not caused by any disease,” Sidorkin says.

“It was the needles poking the capillaries. It really hurt a lot. But I never felt like I had an alien object inside of me.”

It is obvious that a five-centimeter branch is too large to be inhaled or swallowed, doctors say. They suggest that the patient might have inhaled a small bud, which then started to grow inside his body.

Meanwhile, the piece of lung with the little fir tree has been preserved for further study.

I kinda agree with one comment... were are the roots?

Um, the first pic IS gross, and being "gory" is against the TOS.
