Okay, I have recently become a hockey fan thanks to some of my friends. First, I must get this outta the way:

Go Penguins! Crosby, Malkin, Sykora, Fleury, FTW! And screw the Flyers!

Now that that is out of the way, are there any other hockey fans here, and who are you rooting for? Also, do you think you have a decent shot. I know the Pengs do.

I'm definitely rooting for the Pens over the Flyers, but my team is San Jose (check my location, bitchez). I've been watching hockey for more than a decade and I'm still like a kid on Christmas when playoffs start!

Five score and sixteen years ago Lord Stanley brought forth on this continent a new trophy, concieved in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all hockey teams are created equal.

Now we are engaged in a great playoff war...

You bite your tongue with that failures talk.

Though, most of my rage towards the team stems from the years after the team left, when the Courant would dedicate front page headlines to the Canes, but ignore the Islanders, Bruins, Rangers, and Devils, all with a larger fan base and several hundred miles in their favor.

And yes, the habs should be destroyed. Eviscerated, even.

That is an easy one, because the Bruins stink. Check out the number of Stanley Cups the Habs have. Do you know how many times the Bruins have lost in the post-seaon?

The Bruins won't go away easily, but with 11 first-time playoff performers, go away they will. Canadiens in six.

In what has become a rite of spring, the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens will face off for the 32nd time when their first round playoff series opens on Thursday. The Canadiens hold a distinct advantage in the series at 24-7. Montreal has also defeated Boston seven times in the Stanley Cup final - the Bruins have never beaten the Canadiens to capture the Cup.

The Original Six rivals have had a colourful playoff history and have treated fans to some very memorable battles through the years.

-- 1971: Ken Who? --

Bobby Orr and the high-scoring Bruins won 57 games in the regular season and were the top team heading into playoffs. They drew Montreal in the opening round and faced off against a largely unknown goaltender named Ken Dryden. The former Cornell University netminder spent most of that season in the American Hockey League with the Montreal Voyageurs. He played only six games for the Canadiens before the playoffs started, but he helped Montreal to a 4-3 series win and eventually the Stanley Cup championship. Dryden was rewarded with the Conn Smythe Trophy.

-- 1979: Too Many Men --

The Bruins were up 4-3 in the dying minutes of Game 7 of their semifinal series before disaster struck. Don Cherry's club was assessed a penalty for too many men on the ice, opening the door for some Guy Lafleur magic on the ensuing power play. The flashy forward darted down the wing and blasted a shot past Gilles Gilbert to send the game to overtime. Yvon Lambert then scored the winner in OT as the Canadiens would eventually go on to face the Rangers in the final and win the Cup.

-- 1984: Another Mystery Goalie --

Like Dryden in 1971, Steve Penney spent most of the year in the American Hockey League, was brought up late in the season and got the starting assignment against the Bruins. Boston had a monster season, amassing 104 points compared to the Canadiens' 75, but Penney limited the Bruins to only two goals as the Canadiens swept the series in three games.

-- 1988 to 1994: Revenge of the Bruins --

The Bruins had the upper hand against the Canadiens in the late 1980's and early 1990's, taking playoff meetings in 1988, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1994. Andy Moog and Cam Neely were a force. Moog held the Canadiens to just 10 goals in a 4-1 series win for the Bruins in their Adams Division showdown during the 1988 playoffs and advanced to the Stanley Cup final, eventually losing to the Edmonton Oilers. The Bruins again got past the Canadiens 4-1 in 1990 and once again lost in the Stanley Cup final to the Oilers. The Bruins won the 1991 and 1994 series in seven games, but swept the Canadiens in 1992. In 1991, Neely scored a remarkable goal, blasting one from the blue line and beating star goaltender Patrick Roy over his shoulder.

-- 2002: The Turning Point --

The Bruins and Canadiens faced off in the opening round. Montreal was up 2-1 in the series and the rivalry took another heated turn when defenceman Kyle McLaren laid out Canadiens forward Richard Zednik (8 points in the series) with an elbow to the face. Zednik was out for the rest of the playoffs with a severe concussion, broken nose, bruised throat and cut under the right eye. The Bruins took Game 4, but the Canadiens rallied without one of their top forwards and won the series in six.

-- 2004: Where's Joe? --

The two teams met again in 2004 with a similar set-up to past match-ups. The Bruins had a solid campaign, picking up 104 points and nailing down the second seed in the Eastern Conference. Montreal was seeded seventh and the two rivals met in the opening round. Boston got out to a 3-1 series lead and appeared to have things all wrapped up after an embarrassing incident in Game 4. In overtime, Canadiens forward Alex Kovalev took a slash by Bruins centre Travis Green, dropping his stick immediately and colliding with teammate Sheldon Souray. That allowed Glen Murray to pick up the loose puck and score the winning goal. In spite of the Game 4 miscue, the Canadiens won the final three games behind solid goaltending from Jose Theodore. Bruins captain Joe Thornton was not a factor in the series due to a rib injury and did not register a point.

-- 2008: Almost Squandered --

The Canadiens came into the playoff series as the heavy favourite after claiming the top seed in the East. They took on the eighth seeded Bruins and jumped out to a 3-1 series lead. Boston battled back to even the series, but in Game 7 Carey Price stopped all 25 shots he faced and the Canadiens crushed the Bruins 5-0.

Much of that has to do with the original 6 era and monopolistic practices on the part of certain owners (Norris owned the Blackhawks, Rangers, and had significant influence over the Bruins), and labor rules that gave teams exclusive rights to players within a 50 mile radius of the city (big disadvantage at the time for Boston, New York, and Chicago), and a simplistic playoff situation (only two teams eliminated), resulting in Montreal being in the playoffs every year, and Toronto and Detroit only missing 3 times each.

That was some of the most intense and skillful hockey I have ever seen. As the commercials state, the Garden was truly vibrating with noise.

That said, B's in 6. Possibly 7. But I don't see Montreal pulling the upset. Bruins know what they need to do, and know that they need to maintain their discipline. Time to leave the rage of the last game against Montreal on the bench, and play the style of hockey that earned the B's the conference.

I would agree and they can't get penalties. Montreal has one of the best power plays in the league. Get ready for a grinding series. I like the Leafs and the Rangers but Montreal does have a really good team. They do seem to have more than their fair share of goons this year.

Goons are those players who sole purpose is to beat people up.

Wow...when will the leafs fans wake up and smell the roses? The Leafs are all about making money. Not winning games. Those they got a pretty huge rivalrie with the Canadiens also. What with both team being two of first six teams in the NHL. One that used to be Cathlico and the other Protestant. Not to forget one came from a French part of Canada. The other an English in a country where the two different languages have always been opposed to each other.

But frankly for me. I'm rooting for the Flames and the Canucks. Flames are my favortie. But I don't either team is gonna win this year. :(

Bruins also have a much weaker game if their numbers are reduced, even if it is 4 on 4...their style of play just collapses. I'll give that the Habs are a strong team this year, but just not as strong as they could be.

I prefer the teams with the least pronouncable names on the roster - whether Czech or Russian or whatever else, those are the likely winners.

You know what? SCREW THE CAPITALS.

Yeah, I said it.

I've been an avid Caps fan for 20 fraking years. I've rooted for the Caps when they won. I rooted for them when they lost. I rooted for them in the pre, regular and post seasons for 20 damn years.

In '98 they had an actual shot at the Stanley Cup. (Mainly because they managed to avoid the &*%(!# Penguins in the playoffs that year.) They went all the way to playing the Red Wings for the cup.

Announcers, analysts and sports talking heads all seemed to agree that the Caps didn't deserve to be there. That it was a fluke and that the Caps had no business playing for the Cup. Nevermind they'd beaten the Islanders, the Bruins, the Sabres... no that didn't matter all that mattered was they were gonna get creamed by Detroit.

And they did. They got swept in the series 4-0 and yet we, the fans, still loved 'em and felt they deserved the chance, at least.

The Caps didn't manage to make it past the first round of the playoffs again until THIS YEAR. So maybe the talking heads were right, eh?

So they meet the Penguins after a miraculous comeback against the Rangers and I thought to myself "Here we go. They always lose to the Penguins in the playoffs. Always." But I dared to hope that this year might be different.

So here we were, tonight, game 7, and I'm thinking to myself "You know, even if they lose, I'll still be proud of them because they fought for it and made a real series of it."

But, my god... I had no idea they'd do what they did tonight. Oh my god.

All I can think of is that there must be a rule somewhere that if you buy tickets to a game and the team doesn't show up, you get a refund. Well the Caps sure didn't fraking show up tonight. I don't know who the hell those guys on the ice were in the Caps jerseys but they looked like a bunch of narcoleptic morons who couldn't have won a game against a 5th grade junior hockey team with a 3 goal head start. By the midpoint of the 2nd period they were LOSING 5-0 for god's sake! What the HELL? Did they not care? Did somebody slip them each a check for a couple hundred large to throw the game? Where was the team that had rallied from a 3 game deficit to beat the Rangers? Where was the team that had rallied from a 3-2 deficit against the Penguins? my god, did they even know where they were?

I can only imagine what it must have been like to pay out all the money to be there tonight only to be given this farce of a performance. I once went to a playoff game (Caps vs Pens, ironically) and I paid $117 for a so-so seat. (Caps won that game) I mean damn... You go to a game with no guarantee they'll win but the least they could do is put up a FIGHT and pretend for 60 minutes that they're a professional major league hockey team.

Just sayin'.

If I were at that game I'd be howling for a refund. You can't assume they'll win but I think it's reasonable to assume they'll put for some fraking EFFORT. I can't even blame the Pittsburgh native referees for this one. The Caps just didn't give a shit tonight. That's the only explanation I can think of. They didn't care. Final score: 6-2. At least they managed to avoid a shutout. Woo go Ovechkin. If I were him I'd bitch slap the goalie, all the defensemen and then commit seppuku just for good measure...

...after he gets finished pulling the hockey stick with the Penguins logo out of his rectum.

Gotta Go with the Wings :D

I made the mistake of going to see Sheffield v. Cardiff the day after Sheffield had just (mathematically) won the league. Needless to say, the rather below par performance was later attributed to late nights and champagne.

Well, the Bruins lost. Unlike the previous rant, I will say that the Bruins played great. They had their mistakes, and should never have been forced to a game 7, but their game tonight was pretty good. I'm not happy that they lost, but I am satisfied with how their game went. Tonight, the Bruins played well. If nothing else, I think that the team has a shot for the next few years. I wish we had the win tonight, of course, but they didn't roll over a die. The players worked hard, hit hard, and fought for the puck. I wish we had the W, and will go so far as to say they were the more deserving team, but the loss will be taken in stride.

Could be worse. You could have been already waiting for next season when the regular season ended like I have been. Stupid injuries and Avery move. *grumbles in the corner wearing his Stars sweater*

Your team made the right move by damning Avery to the AHL, where he belongs. As much as I hate to damn a talented player, Avery has no place being in the NHL. I don't care how desperate a team is for their playoff spot.

No, I am talking about even bringing him on to the team in the first place. It's clear he was a cancer on the team, as we immediately got better once he was removed. Even with Morrow out for the year, and Jere and Sergei out significant amount of time, we were still in there. Then Richards gets injured, that just broke our backs. Alas, there where the bright spots in Brunnstrom, Neal, and Loui, and we'll have a high draft pick for the first time in awhile.

I do have to say, as much as I HATE every team south of the Mason-Dixon line, I do have something of a soft spot for Dallas...I hate it, but I kinda like them.

I shall now go kill myself for admitting this. Blame it on the beer and the loss.

Wow, I missed this thread. I'm a Red Wings fan. What a goal tonight :D Go Cleary! I don't get all the anti-Datsuyk comments. He's placed into tough spots and manages to still have a +3 rating. He killed the penatly with Lidstrom and Rafalski, the Ducks' 5-3 penatly for 70 seconds! He's a defensive forward, he doesn't score often, but when he's on the ice, do the Wings ever get scored on?

The reason that Datsuyk-Zetterberg line works so damn well, is that they're both equally good, but Henrik is offensive and Pavel is defensive. (That's the Detroit HERO line for all you smart asses saying "but they don't play on the same line!")

Also, for the remaining teams, I'll say a repeat of the last year, Wings vs. Pens and Wings win. Even though I wanted to see a Detroit-Washington match up.

Since we're on hockey, I gotta a very nice line for Russia for Vancuver: Frolov-Datsuyk-Ovechkin and Malking with Kovalchuk on defense. Anyone want to stop that line? What players would you stop it with?
