"Cyberdyne, a Japanese company founded Professor Sankai, creator of the "Robot Suit", has developed a real life Iron Man exoskeleton called HAL."

Seriously? Cyberdyne, HAL and Ironman, all in one product? Someone watches too much Sci Fi.

How long until the armies of power-armored Space Marines?

I know the Japanese have a different relationship with robots, that they're seen as friends and allies rather than foes ... but c'mon! Cyberdyne? HAL? "Friends and allies" is one thing, "toaster-loving species traitors" is another!

Seriously, if they release a helmet for it with a blinking red bar, I'm going Luddite on their arses.

Let's not jump to such sinister motives. Japan has a tradition of armored superheroes that go way beyond Power Rangers and this is clearly an attempt to modernize the force.

Cool. They are way overdue producing Skynet. I had stock and everything. Robots are right up there with Ninjas and pirates.

Interested in having your own HAL? The Post Chronicle reports that the HAL is going into production and will be available soon in Japan for around $4,200 while the Scientific American claims that the HAL exoskeleton is already available but only for rent in Japan for around $1,300 a month.

sweetness. If I could get one for $4,200 that would be pretty bitchin'. Its alot cheaper than I would have expected, actually I'd probably wait for a better version of it.

Ugh...

HAL is so past old. Like, this was news a year ago. I'm surprised this article was only posted today and not... oh, I don't know, at the time Iron Man actually came out months ago. To make it actually relevant.

It could be because the article is dated April 13th 2009, but I wouldn't want to jump to any unreasonable conclusions.

A.) Time zones. It was posted within the past 24 hours, at any rate.

B.) Iron Man was released May of 2008. As I stated, this article is a little late to invoke its imagery. By, like, a full year.

I'm really looking forward to this. In another 25-30 years I may need one. I'm going to start saving for it now.

The source was posted here in the last 24 hours, because the source has only existed for a little longer.

Are you suggesting that they should have somehow expo'd the technology... before it was built, so the name of the product would tie in with a movie release?

If you are - I'm sure you're aware that the Ironman is a movie franchise, not a one-off... and is hardly a new innovation, being based on a comic book that dates back decades.

Welp.

You miss my point, I'm not saying that they should have called it "Iron Man Suit". Hybrid Assistive Limb works fine. My gripe is the fact that this article, published within the last week:rolleyes: is touting this suit as a "Real-Life Iron Man" a year after the movie's release and more than two years after the suit's public release (by this, I mean press release, not actual release for service).

My main point, and what I think you fail to realize: to deny that the thread's topic article wasn't written to tie in to the Iron Man movie would be to deny that nice CG Iron Man pic straight from the movie promos on the topic news article's page.

They referenced the movie, of course... how would they not?

Of course, if you had to pick a movie parallel for the technology, Aliens and Matrix Trilogy would both actually be better models.

By the Huffington Post not being literally years late in publishing this story, obviously.
