Eh? And what are these tea parties I've been hearing about?

The "Tea Parties" are protests which are supposed to invoke the memory of the Boston Tea Party, and you'll hear the teabaggers (yes, they call themselves this) make comments about "no taxation without representation."

It's not clear why the protesters, most of whom are receiving tax cuts under Obama, feel that they aren't being represented by their democratically-elected government. But they're hopping mad anyhow.

Savetherich.com has the background.

[potentially stupid question]What does "astroturf" mean?[/potentially stupid question]
It's a play on "grassroots."

"Grassroots" refers to a natural and spontaneous movement driven by the constituents of a community. In other words, average folks decide that they see a problem and they're going to get together to fix it.

"Astroturf" is the term for when the opposite happens; when a large, existing organization basically fakes it, trying to make it appear that there is a grassroots movement behind what is really just a big corporate effort.

The Tea Parties were directly created and sponsored by a number of right-wing think tanks, including Americans for Prosperity and Freedom Works. The Tea Parties are being actively promoted by Fox News.

(My favorite fun fact: while the teabaggers insist that this movement arose out of people's objections to Obama's actions as president, the domain names for many of the Tea Party sites were registered as early as August of 2008, before Obama had even been elected.)

Still not socialism.

The reason the government is taking control of some industries is really rather simple.

Industry: "Oh no, we're bankrupt. Government, please give us money"
Government: "If you want us to prop you up, you'll have to play by our rules"

Not

Government: "We are going to be taking over these industries to manage them in the public interest"
Industry: "Aiiieeeee!"

Who was Dave Shuster talking to when he said the OP quote? One of their resident analysts who pointed out that, all their "OMG SOCIALIZMZ!!!" crying and yelling, not a single one of these rightwingers has ever or will ever turn down Medicare for themselves or their loved ones. Medicare is a dyed in the wool socialist social program. There is no such thing as an economic monoculture in real life. All strong economies are mixed and even the Holy US Economy already has solid socialist parts in its foundation.

Largely, I view most movements as being astroturf/grassroots on some level or another. Some sort of central organization and planning is inevitably important. Although, in the case of the teabaggers, the general indication is that it's primarily made in a factory.

But, as I've said before, I find protesters contemptible and ineffectual. Even the massive French-style protests tend to get nowhere. How the crap do these nitwits think they can change anything in the slightest. Obama is unquestionably in office for another 3 years and 10 months, and there's no option for a no-confidence vote. The current Congress will be in session for nearly two years, and you can't recall them either. They're going to do whatever the hell they want, and protesting in the streets will achieve nothing.

Especially if you call yourself something as ridiculous as a "teabagger."

Quite, if there was some defineable, non-apocalyptic, specific goal they were focused on achieving--like forcing the federal and state governments to disburse stimulus money with greater care than they currently are, or in a less slapdash fashion--then it would have a greater degree of credibility. I just was like, "/facepalm."

Before she posted the video, I found out her favorite videos on youtube were mainly those with a liberal bent.

I'm not excusing the guy about the tv decoder boxes (That made me laugh, to be honest.)

I'm saying that she was trying to rile the people.

And still no link to a blog, no name, nothing to prove you are not just making this up. Hm. How odd.

Notice how she laughed at the end of the video. That was a "I'm screwing with these people," laugh.
And now we have proof that you actually are making it up. Thanks. It took a while, but I knew you'd provide some sooner or later.

I agree with Muravyets. (Have I ever said that before?) If this woman's a blogger than link us to the blog.

This Dick Armey is gonna be a popular guy...

oh and for your amusement (http://beltwayblips.dailyradar.com/video/schuster_if_you_re_planning_tea_bagging_across_the/)...

I love the video caption...

"Teabag Mouthpieces"

One would think his name is pronounced Dick Armey which sounds like Army.

Why wouldn't he go with Richard?

The problem is, I remember her being linked to mainly left-wing sites, yet she just recently deleted all her favorites.

And I remember you being implicated in a Azerbaijani sex-slave smuggling ring, as well as numerous accusations of inappropriate behaviour towards altar boys during your time as a priest in Nicaragua.

Funny what people can remember when they can't be bothered to support their accusations.

Yes it is.

God, I'll never be as good at arguing as you guys. I am just tired of always being on the losing side.

And no, Bush wasn't conservative. Conservatives don't spend the inane amounts he did.

God, give me Clinton. At least under him, we had a surplus.

Well considering the "conservative" congress wrote the spending bills I think your dissatisfaction with the Bush years goes a bit deeper than just him.

Thus the secret of the Clinton years success. Congress was against him, but didn't have enough votes to override him. So nothing got done.

Yep. congress under the GOP blocked social spending which was good.
And Clinton refused to increase defense spending.
Hence the budget surplus.

And it's amazing how easily the Presidency can shake off a salacious scandal. If the office can survive the likes of James Buchanan, Ulysses Grant and Warren Gamaliel Harding, it can certainly survive Bill Clinton, Monica Lewinski and the Blue Dress.
